Provenance constraints on the Late Triassic ejecta layer from Churchwood Quarry, SW England: An impactite suite from Manicouagan

AbstractIn situ LA‐ICP‐MS/MS U‐Pb and Rb‐Sr geochronology combined with geochemical analysis and electron microscopy have been performed on ejecta components sampled from the Mid‐to‐Late Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group at Churchwood Quarry, SW England. The layer comprises altered impact spherules, melt‐rich and fragment‐rich accreted grain clusters (AGCs), along with shocked mineral phases. Late Triassic ages are obtained: a U‐Pb age of 219 ± 72 Ma from variably shock‐metamorphosed apatite and a Rb‐Sr age of 213 ± 31 Ma from melt‐rich AGCs. A post‐depositional U‐Pb age of 200 ± 7.5 Ma obtained from the carbonate host matrix correlates with an early Jurassic dolomitization event associated with regional marine transgression. Several links to the Manicouagan impact structure, Canada, are identified that complement previous provenance studies: (1) rare earth element compositions of impact spherules and melt‐rich AGCs match those of the Manicouagan impact melt sheet; (2) the preservation of Archean and Paleo‐ to Neoproterozoic target rock U‐Pb ages in zircon and apatite match those recorded within Manicouagan basement lithologies; and (3) impact spherules and melt‐rich AGCs record initial 87Sr/86Sr compositions that overlap with those of the Manicouagan impact melt sheet and the target rocks involved in their generation.

Rare Earth Elements in Shells of Black Sea Molluscs: Anomalies and Biogeochemical Implications

Rare earth elements (REE) are a class of increasingly used high-tech product components and new emerging environmental pollutants, which are accumulated, in particular, in marine biota. In this study, REE contents were estimated in shells of several molluscs common in the Black Sea. The summed REE contents in mollusc shells decreased in the following order of species: Magallana gigas = Anadara kagoshimensis > Flexopecten glaber ponticus ≥ Rapana venosa > Mytilus galloprovincialis, ranging from 0.46 to 1.9 mg·kg−1. Canonical analysis of principal coordinates allowed for the correct identification of species based on the REE composition in no fewer than 67% of the samples. The mollusc shells were anomalously enriched in Sc, Y, La, Eu and Tb, most likely due to anthropogenic contamination. The Y/Ho ratios in all samples were represented by two fit values: 23.2 (chondritic) and 67.6 (superchondritic, mainly associated with A. kagoshimensis). A new universal relationship linking the contents of three light and heavy REE in Black Sea mollusc shells was proposed: Ce0.3 Er0.7/Yb = 2.00 ± 0.46 (mean ± standard deviation).

East Asian monsoon and westerly jet driven changes in climate and surface conditions in the NE drylands of China since the Late Pleistocene

The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is a major component of the global climate yet, the causes for the past spatiotemporal variability of EASM rainfall, its interactions and impacts remain unresolved. Here we use the Sr–Nd isotopes and rare earth elements composition of dust in a peat record from northeast (NE) China to investigate the relationship between aeolian dust, the East Asian monsoon and Westerly Jet (WJ) over East Asia since the Late Pleistocene (14 cal ka BP). The NE drylands of China dominate the dust fraction (Hunshandake, Horqin; 44–88%) with a contribution from the deserts of NW China (Badain Jaran, Tengger, Taklamakan; 10–44%), suggesting an influence of the WJ. Dust deposition varied during the Holocene, displaying a minimum between 8.0 and 6.0 cal ka BP and two peaks at 5.8–3.8 and 1.7–0.3 cal ka BP. Changes in dust flux are opposite to the East Asian winter monsoon intensity profile, suggesting a limited influence of the winter monsoon. The EASM appears to have played a more significant role in the dust cycle, with increasing dust fluxes corresponding with lower EASM precipitation. Variations in dust flux from NE drylands display shifts reflecting changes in EASM precipitations and dune activity along the EASM margin, where the dust originates from. To account for the influence of the WJ, we propose that the meridional position and intensity of the WJ also affected dust emission in the drylands’ region. A more northward position of the WJ allows the EASM front further north, generating more precipitations over the NE drylands, reducing the extent of arid areas, and resulting in less dust emission from dune activity, while the opposite occurs with a strong, more southerly WJ. Anthropogenic activities are likely to have had an increasing impact on the dust cycle over the late Holocene. Nevertheless, the presence of inconsistencies in records, coupled with a simultaneous decline in climatic conditions (mainly precipitations) during the same timeframe, hinders the precise assessment of the influence of human activities on dust emissions in the region.

Retentiveness of rare earth elements in garnet with implications for garnet Lu‐Hf chronology

AbstractIncorporation of rare earth elements (REE) in garnet enables garnet chronology (Sm‐Nd, Lu‐Hf), and imparts a garnet‐stable signature on cogenetic phases, which allows petrochronology and general petrogenetic tracing of garnet stability in minerals and melts. Constraints on the uptake and redistribution mechanisms, as well as on the diffusive behaviour of REE in garnet are required for allowing accurate interpretation of REE signatures and ages. Garnet REE profiles are often measured to gain insight into the nature and cause of REE zoning. Interpretation of such profiles is nevertheless complicated by poor constraints on the extent of diffusive relaxation. This is especially relevant for Lu, which, according to experiments, has a relatively high diffusivity and thus may re‐equilibrate with possible consequences for Lu‐Hf chronology. To provide new insight into the REE systematics of garnet, we applied quantitative trace‐element mapping of garnet grains from metamorphic rocks that record peak temperatures above 750°C and cooling rates as low as 1.5°C Ma−1. Garnet in all samples preserves Rayleigh‐type or oscillatory growth zoning with sharply defined interfacial angles that match the garnet habit. Re‐equilibration of REE compositions appears restricted to domains with nebulous and patchy zoning, which likely form by interface‐coupled dissolution and re‐precipitation reactions mediated by fluids or melts, rather than REE volume diffusion. The possible effect of Lu diffusion in the analysed grains was investigated by comparing the observations to the results from 2D numerical modelling using Lu diffusivities from recent diffusion experiments. This test indicates that Lu diffuses significantly slower in natural garnet than experiments predict. The retentiveness of REE in garnet demonstrates the reliability of REE signatures in magmatic tracing and petrochronology and establishes Lu‐Hf chronology as a robust means of dating garnet growth and recrystallization in metamorphic rocks, including those that underwent high‐ or ultrahigh‐temperature conditions.

Rare earth element systematics of chimney anhydrite from seafloor hydrothermal vents

Comparative studies of sulphide chemistry have been conducted over the past few decades to characterise seafloor hydrothermal mineralisation, but few studies have been carried out on sulphate minerals. Here we report on a systematic study of the S isotopic composition and rare earth element (REE) chemistry of chimney anhydrite from various types of seafloor hydrothermal vent fields in the Central Indian Ridge, North Fiji Basin, and Tonga intra-oceanic arc. Our results show that sulphate δ34S values of anhydrite cluster around that of seawater sulphate, indicating a significant role for fluid–seawater mixing during anhydrite precipitation. However, some anhydrite has δ34S values lower than that of seawater. This likely reflects sulphate derived from magmatic SO2 disproportionation. Chondrite-normalised REE patterns of the anhydrite are not uniform on the scale of individual grains and/or between each type of hydrothermal vent field. The REE compositions of the anhydrite do not have a clear relationship with the REE compositions of the primary host rocks with which the hydrothermal fluids interacted. This indicates that the REEs are not sensitive indicators of the host rock compositions, even though the host rocks are the dominant source of REEs in the seafloor hydrothermal fluids. In contrast, anhydrite REE concentrations and Eu anomalies are correlated with δ34S values and the redox state of the hydrothermal fluids, respectively. We suggest that relatively REE-enriched anhydrite is formed by efficient leaching of REEs from host rocks by acidic magmatic fluids (i.e., a low pH), whereas a low redox potential of the hydrothermal fluids is the most important factor controlling Eu mobility. The original concentrations of REEs supplied to the hydrothermal fluids can also be modified by fluid boiling and fluid–seawater mixing. The former produces light REE-depleted anhydrite because the availability of chloride ligands decreases in low-density vapor-dominated boiled fluids. In situ geochemical analysis of anhydrite on the intra-grain scale shows that high degrees of fluid–seawater mixing contribute to the relatively low REE concentrations and positive Eu anomalies. As such, our results indicate that the REE systematics of anhydrite are mainly controlled by the combined effects of fluid conditions (i.e., redox state, pH, and Cl concentrations) and sub-seafloor geochemical processes (i.e., magmatic input, fluid boiling, and seawater mixing) rather than the nature of the source materials. In situ analysis of anhydrite grains is a useful tool for constraining variable hydrothermal mineralisation conditions during chimney growth, which cannot be solely inferred from geochemical studies of sulphide minerals, particularly in inactive and relict systems where the hydrothermal fluids cannot be sampled.

Rare earth element geochemistry of reef carbonates in the South China Sea since the Miocene: Insights into paleoclimatic significance

Seawater chemistry critically affects the functioning of ocean ecosystems. However, the evolution of the seawater chemistry in the South China Sea (SCS) since the Miocene is not fully resolved, and its links to tectonic and climate changes remain unclear. In-situ, shallow marine carbonates can provide insights into long-term changes in seawater chemistry and associated environmental processes. In this study, we conducted the rare earth element (REE) analysis of the NK-1 core in the southern SCS since the Miocene. The results reveal poor relationships between siliciclastic/diagenetic indicators (mineralogical, isotopic, and elemental data) and REE proxies, which demonstrate that the REE compositions are insensitive to non-carbonate contaminations and diagenesis. The results exhibit seawater-like REE patterns with LREE depletion, positive La anomaly, superchondritic Y/Ho ratio, and negative Ce anomaly, which demonstrate that this core has preserved a signal of the primary seawater REE composition. The Y/Ho ratios range from 45 to 80 and La anomalies range from 1.0 to 2.3 during ∼23–13 Ma, and they then decrease after ∼13 Ma, with the Y/Ho ratios ranging from 30 to 52 and La anomalies ranging from 0.6 to 1.5. Considering that seawater REE components are mainly sourced from terrigenous sources which exhibit lower La anomalies and Y/Ho ratios, our results indicate an enhanced terrigenous input since ∼13 Ma. We consider that the climate cooling and aridity since ∼13 Ma might be responsible for the phenomenon.

Geochemical characteristics and environmental implication of rare earth elements in sediments from the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

The construction and operation of the Three Gorges Dam occluded sediment transportation in the Yangtze River. However, the sources, transport processes, and environmental impacts of these sediments on the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) remain unclear. Here, we used rare earth elements (REEs) to trace the transport pathways of sediments in the TGR, China. Geochemical characteristics including the chemical composition and fractionation, temporal and spatial distribution, and potential sources of REEs were also evaluated in this study. The individual REEs concentration in the TGR sediments followed the Oddo-Harkins rule, with the mean REEs value of 207.33 μg/g. REEs concentrations in the midstream were higher than those in the upstream and downstream of the TGR. Statistical analysis showed that water impoundment phase had no significant influence on the distribution of REEs. TGR sediments are mainly derived from terrigenous detrital particulates, characterized by a distinctive enrichment in light REEs, with its percentage higher than 90 % of the total REEs. The significant positive correlation among the REEs confirmed that they are co-existed and shared the similar sources. Multiple provenance analysis approaches using discriminant function analyses, provenance indices, and La/Yb-La/Sm-Gd/Yb ternary diagrams further indicated that the REEs in sediments originated from the weathering of mudstone in the basin of TGR. After periodic water level fluctuation for more than six years, the chemical compositions of REEs in TGR sediments slightly differed from those of the Yangtze River sediments before TGR construction, but were similar to those of the downstream of the Yangtze River. Therefore, this study indicated that the construction and operation of the TGR changed the chemical compositions and the origin of the sediments in the Yangtze River, which can provide useful insights into the transport pathways of TGR sediments and their impacts on the fluvial environment.

Forecasting End-of-Life Wind Turbine Material Flows in Australia under Various Wind Energy Deployment Scenarios

A circular economy involves managing and reducing the environmental and social impacts of products and materials throughout their entire lifecycle, from production to end of life, including clean energy technologies. The remarkable growth of wind turbine (WT) deployment in Australia, as a clean energy source, is promising, with over 10 gigawatts (GW) installed by 2023. Responsible management of wind turbines throughout the entire supply chain, including their end of life, is crucial to prevent potential environmental issues caused by significant waste volumes and to identify opportunities for resource recovery. This study offers a comprehensive overview of current and future WT waste through material flow analysis (MFA) under five national wind energy deployment scenarios, considering various wind turbine technologies. The results indicate that the projected cumulative WT installation capacity will range from 13 to 38 GW by 2041. Consequently, the cumulative WT waste volume is expected to range between 6.69 and 19.76 million tonnes in 2060, depending on the scenario, with the “slow change” scenario producing the least waste and the “step change” scenario generating the most. The estimated waste stream will see a rapid increase from about 2028, encompassing a variety of materials, primarily concrete at 10.20 million tonnes, followed by 3.21 million tonnes of steel and 35.41 kt of copper by 2060. Additionally, valuable materials such as rare earth elements (REEs) and composites, despite their smaller quantities, have significant environmental, economic, and supply chain security implications. This substantial waste material presents an opportunity for resource recovery and underscores the importance of adopting a circular economy approach for wind energy systems.

Alloying effect of rare-earth tritellurides on the charge density wave and magnetic properties

Among many van der Waals materials rare-earth tritellurides (RTe3) allow studying several phenomena like magnetic, superconducting, and charge density wave (CDW). These studies show the effect of cationic alloying of antiferromagnetic RTe3 for fully tunable near room-temperature CDW properties. DyxGd1−xTe3 and DyxTb1−xTe3 alloys were synthesized through a chemical vapor transport technique, and the rare-earth element composition was controlled by changing the ratio of rare-earth metal reagents. The results show that the lattice parameters can be continuously tuned with the composition of the rare-earth cations leading to the variation of the internal chemical pressure. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy and electric transport measurement show that the CDW transition temperature (TCDW) of RTe3 alloys varies with lattice parameters/chemical pressure spanning across 300–380 K. Additional magnetism studies offer the first insights into the magnetic ordering in RTe3 alloys. The emergence of multiple magnetic transitions implies complex magnetic interactions that arise from interactions between different rare-earth elements. Overall findings introduce ways to control the CDW behavior and provide valuable insights into the magnetic ordering in RTe3 alloys, contributing to further investigation and a better understanding of their properties.

Rare Earth Element Variability in Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oils from Abruzzo Region.

Extra virgin olive oil is a food product from the Mediterranean area that is particularly and continuously experiencing to increasing instances of fraudulent geographical labeling. Therefore, origin protection must be improved, mainly based on its intrinsic chemical composition. This study aimed to perform a preliminary chemical characterization of Abruzzo extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) using rare earth elements (REEs). REEs were evaluated in EVOO samples of different varieties produced in different geographical origins within the Abruzzo region (Italy) in three harvest years using ICP-MS chemometric techniques. Principal component, discriminant, and hierarchical cluster analyses were conducted to verify the influence of the variety, origin, and vintage of the REE composition. The results of a three-year study showed a uniform REE pattern and a strong correlation in most EVOOs, in particular for Y, La, Ce, and Nd. However, europium and erbium were also found in some oil samples. Compared with cultivar and origin, only the harvest year slightly influenced the REE composition, highlighting the interactions of the olive system with the climate and soil chemistry that could affect the multielement composition of EVOOs.

Composition of Rare Earth Elements in Fluvial Sediments of the Lesser Zab River Basin, Northeastern Iraq: Implications for Tectonic Setting and Provenance

During the past few decades, rare earth elements (REEs) have gained enormous attention in geochemical studies worldwide as a result of their important role in the manufacturing of high-tech equipment. REEs in river sediment have been widely used for provenance determination and in geochemical studies of continental crust, rock and sediment environments, and anthropogenic pollution. This study aims to elucidate the origin and tectonic setting of Little Zab River Basin (LZRB) sediments by examining 23 fluvial sediment samples of rare earth elements (REEs) collected from both the primary river and the inter-sub-basin regions during the rainy or high-flow season. The ICP-MS method was employed to analyze all samples to identify and assess the compositions of REEs. A fraction of the river sediments, smaller than 2 mm, which is more representative and more homogeneous, was used to carry out geochemical analysis. REE concentrations in the Little Zab River (LZR) and the upper parts of the LZRB were generally higher than those in the lower parts. The concentration of REEs in nearly all samples was lower than that of the North American Shale Composite (NASC), and the Upper Continental Crust (UCC), except for the sub-basin sediment Sbs2, which was higher than these references; also, the sediment sample Zrs4 was slightly higher than NASC. Light rare earth elements (LREEs) display enrichment relative to heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) with a range between 7.15 μg/g and 12.37 μg/g for LZR samples and between 5.95 μg/g and 13.03 μg/g for the sub-basin samples. The REE discrimination diagrams, along with the chondrodite-normalized pattern of the studied sediments, confirm that the sediment is predominantly sourced from the alkaline basaltic unit of the late Cretaceous Walsh group of an arc tectonic affinity.

Geochemistry of dissolved rare earth elements in the Lancang River with cascade dams and implications for anthropogenic impacts

Anthropogenic effects like the construction of cascade dams are increasingly affecting the biogeochemical cycles of rare earth elements (REE) in rivers. However, our understanding on the REE compositions of dissolved loads in rivers under the effect of cascade dams remains limited. In this study, forty-four water samples in the Lancang River were analyzed for REE concentrations to assess the impact of cascade dams. The results showed that total dissolved REE concentrations ranged from 4.0 to 65.7 ng/L, with an average value of 21.8 ng/L. The concentrations in the middle (519.6 ng/L) and lower (331.5 ng/L) reaches were higher than those in the upper reaches (108.1 ng/L). All river samples showed (La/Yb)N values < 1, and the PAAS-normalized REE patterns indicated a substantial enrichment of heavy REE, characterized by negative Ce (0.1–0.9) and positive Eu (1.5–32.1) anomalies. The enrichment of heavy REE can be attributed to their preferential release from minerals during the weathering process and their interaction with inorganic complex anions. The negative Ce anomaly observed is likely the result of redox conditions, while the positive Eu anomaly was inherited from the REE characteristics of the source rocks. Moreover, the Ce anomaly decreased to 0.29 in the Huangdeng reservoir and 0.12 in the Dachaoshan reservoir. The value of Ce anomaly displayed a sharp decline in the middle and lower reaches affected by the cascade reservoirs. The effect of the dams played an important role in Ce anomaly by decreasing the DOC concentrations, and rivers with low DOC concentrations are commonly associated with negative Ce anomaly. This study revealed that cascade dams paly an essential role in the variation of REE in dissolved loads and REE anomaly may have the potential to track anthropogenic activities.

Effect of friction stir processing on mechanical, in vitro degradation, and biocompatibility behaviour of stir casted Mg-Zn-rare earth oxide composites for biodegradable implant applications

The current work takes the benefit of utilizing a composite approach by reinforcing Mg with Zn, Cerium oxide - a rare earth and bone-friendly ceramic, and bioactive hydroxyapatite to develop magnesium-based MMCs for high structural integrity and low degradation inside the human body via stir casting technique in a protective Ar-SF6 environment. The friction stir processing (FSP) technique was employed to tailor the properties of as-cast Mg composites, resulting in further grain refinement and better dispersion of reinforced materials. Phase and microstructure analysis were analyzed via XRD, FESEM, and optical microscopy. During tensile tests, as-cast Mg-5Zn-1HA-1.5CeO2 improved 68.6% in yield strength and 16.3% in ultimate tensile strength. After FSP, the same composite resulted in an overall improvement of 114.6% in yield strength and 31.9% in ultimate strength compared to as-cast pure Mg. Dispersion of inert bioceramics within the Mg matrix results in higher polarization resistance as per Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). At the same time, a remarkable 81.6% reduction in H2 emission and an 84.4% decrement in corrosion rate were found during the immersion study for Mg-5Zn-1HA-1.5CeO2 composites. All Mg-based composites exhibited no cytotoxicity as cell viability evaluated via MTT assay was found to be greater than 80% for 50% and 25% extract concentrations. The composite’s hemolysis rate was below 5%, indicating acceptable hemocompatibility. This work provides insight into developing rare earth oxide-incorporated Mg composites with better mechanical capabilities and degradation resistance while avoiding the long-term cytotoxicity of rare-earth materials.

Towards deciphering the source of rare earth elements in kerogen: Seawater or diagenetic porewater origin?

The composition of rare earth elements (REEs) in kerogen has long been hypothesized to preserve signatures of shallow seawater, assuming that kerogen primarily originates from biomass inhabiting the shallow photic zone. In this study, we examine the composition of REEs in kerogen samples obtained from the Ediacaran Dongkanshang and Fengtan sections in South China. Through a meticulous screening process, we provide evidence that kerogen samples exhibiting patterns of heavy rare earth element (HREE) enrichment are free from acid-insoluble mineral contamination and preserve unaltered REE signatures. This study reveals that kerogens display low total rare earth element (ΣREE) concentrations. As kerogen samples exhibit higher levels of HREE enrichment, the Ce/Ce*, Eu/Eu*, and Y/Ho ratios show an upward trend. Moreover, all the kerogen samples exhibit chondritic Y/Ho ratios (with an average of 32). These findings imply that REEs in kerogens are of diagenetic origin and influenced by the ambient redox conditions. Our results suggest that the distribution patterns of REEs in kerogens derive from porewater within methanogenic zones, as opposed to the oxic seawater photic zone. Consequently, the formation of kerogen could potentially occur within a similar domain as the methanogenic zones, where kerogens can assimilate REEs from pore fluids and incorporate them into their macromolecular structures.

Prediction of Pr/Nd Element Content Based on One-Dimensional Convolution with Multi-Residual Attention Blocks

Insufficient color feature extraction can lead to poor prediction performance in rare earth element composition estimation. To address this issue, we propose a one-dimensional convolutional method for predicting rare earth element composition. First, images of rare earth element solutions, color space features (HSV and YUV), and spatial texture features are extracted. Because the trend of rare earth element composition is closely related to the extraction stage, we select the corresponding extraction stage of the image as a key feature. A feature selection technique based on Random Forest Recursive Feature Elimination with Cross-Validation (RF-RFECV) is applied to select the most relevant features, with a mixed feature set being obtained. Based on this, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network prediction model with multiple residual attention blocks (MRAB-DNN) is introduced. The proposed model incorporates the Residual Attention Block (RAB) structure, which mitigates the effects of noisy weights, subsequently enhancing both prediction accuracy and the rate of convergence. Experimental assessments on field images utilizing the MRAB-DNN model with an amalgamation of features indicate that our methodology surpasses alternative techniques in thorough image feature extraction. Moreover, it presents dual advantages of speed and precision in predicting the composition of rare earth elements. Such a model holds potential for real-time monitoring of rare earth element composition in extraction production processes.

Development of High-Performance Hot-Deformed Neodymium-Iron-Boron Magnets without Heavy Rare-Earth Elements.

Neodymium-iron-boron magnet is an essential material for the traction motors of green vehicles because it exhibits the highest maximum energy product, (BH)max, out of all permanent-magnet materials. However, heavy rare-earth elements such as dysprosium and terbium, which are scarce resources, are added to these magnets to improve their heat resistance. To address this resource problem, considerable efforts have been made to reduce the composition of heavy rare-earth elements in these magnets without causing a significant reduction in coercivity. Hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets are a category of Nd-Fe-B magnets where precious materials such as heavy rare-earth elements can be eliminated or reduced to maintain high coercivity owing to their fine microstructure. Although they are not often used for the fabrication of high-performance magnets due to their complicated production process and the difficulty in controlling their fine microstructure, after the rare-earth crisis in 2020, these magnets have begun to attract attention as a material that could increase coercivity when controlling their microstructures. This paper provides an overview of hot-deformed magnets and the efforts made to improve their properties by controlling their microstructures.

Dataset of rare earth elements distribution in soils and vegetables

This paper presents a comprehensive data set on rare earth elements (REE) and their distribution in soils and vegetables in an area where the soil background is enriched with these elements. The study examined REE distribution in six vegetables commonly grown in local residents' gardens, including fennel, garlic, lettuce, parsley, onion, and raddichio, and each plant was analyzed for REE composition in its root, stem, and leaf or bulb. In addition to total REE concentrations in soils and plants, the data set includes transfer factors and fractionation indices for REE in soils, as well as normalized curves. This dataset may be useful in the field of soil geochemistry and research on the uptake of lanthanides into plants and the food chain, as well as their potential effects on human health.

Petrology, Age, and Rift Origin of Ultramafic Lamprophyres (Aillikites) at Mount Webb, a New Alkaline Province in Central Australia

AbstractDiamond exploration over the past decade has led to the discovery of a new province of kimberlitic pipes (the Webb Province) in the Gibson Desert of central Australia. The Webb pipes comprise sparse macrocrystic olivine set in a groundmass of olivine, phlogopite, perovskite, spinel, clinopyroxene, titanian‐andradite and carbonate. The pipes resemble ultramafic lamprophyres (notably aillikites) in their mineralogy, major and minor oxide chemistry, and initial 87Sr/86Sr and εNd‐εHf isotopic compositions. Ion probe U‐Pb geochronology on perovskite (806 ± 22 Ma) indicates the eruption of the pipes was co‐eval with plume‐related magmatism within central Australia (Willouran‐Gairdner Volcanic Event) associated with the opening of the Centralian Superbasin and Rodinia supercontinent break‐up. The equilibration pressure and temperature of mantle‐derived garnet and chromian (Cr) diopside xenocrysts range between 17 and 40 kbar and 750–1320°C and define a paleo‐lithospheric thickness of 140 ± 10 km. Chemical variations of xenocrysts define litho‐chemical horizons within the shallow, middle, and deep sub‐continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). The shallow SCLM (50–70 km), which includes garnet‐spinel and spinel lherzolite, contains Cr diopside with weakly refertilized rare earth element compositions and unenriched compositions. The mid‐lithosphere (70–85 km) has lower modal abundances of Cr diopside. This layer corresponds to a seismic mid‐lithosphere discontinuity interpreted as pargasite‐bearing lherzolite. The deep SCLM (&gt;90 km) comprises refertilized garnet lherzolite that was metasomatized by a silicate‐carbonatite melt.

CMAS resistance characteristics of multi-components rare earth phosphate materials at 1250 °C and 1350 °C

Calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) attack is a major challenge for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) during the application. In this work, four rare earth phosphates materials including (La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Eu0.2Gd0.2)PO4, (La0.5Nd0.5)PO4, (La0.5Gd0.5)PO4 and (Nd0.5Gd0.5)PO4 were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation. The resistance behaviors to CMAS of the materials were investigated at 1250 °C and 1350 °C for 5 h, 10 h and 20 h, respectively. Results show that the main corrosion products are the apatite compounds (Ca2+xRe8-x(PO4)x(SiO4)6-xO2) and the Ca3(PO4)2. Increasing the corrosion temperature from 1250 °C to 1350 °C will promote the penetration of the melted CMAS. It would not lead to the more serious corrosion by prolonging the corrosion time at 1250 °C and 1350 °C. The P–Ca layer composed by the Ca3(PO4)2, which relates to the rare earth elements compositions, prevent the CMAS corrosion to the materials effectively. Preparing multi-components rare earth phosphates and optimizing their element compositions will be a new way to improve the resistance to the CMAS for these materials.
