MANGANESE AND RADIOACTIVE MANGANESE IN LIVER CELL NUCLEI.

Abstract The turnover of manganese in cell nuclei of rat liver has been investigated using 54 Mn as radiotracer in conjunction with chemical determination of Mn contents. The mean Mn concentrations of nuclei and of liver were 12.4 and 10.9 μg per g dry wt., respectively. The nuclear Mn has been found to turn over more slowly than the Mn of the cytoplasm, and appears to include a component with a half turnover time of about 2 days. The hypothesis is advanced that this component may correspond to a mangano-protein containing non-dissociable Mn. The initial nuclear uptake of tracer 54 Mn is, however, much more rapid than this simple model requires, and suggests that Mn can pass from the blood through the cytoplasm to the nucleus faster than it exchanges with the bulk of the cytoplasmic Mn components.

Radiomanganese studies in pyridoxine deficient rats.

SummaryTissue distribution and excretion of radioactivity following intravenous injection of Mn54Cl2 at 3 different time intervals were studied in rats deficient in pyridoxine and in control animals. The findings indicate that deficiency of pyridoxine is associated with increased uptake of the injected dose by brain and testicles, and with decreased uptake by liver and heart. No differences in Mn54 concentrations were observed in other tissues examined. The tracer content in the gastrointestinal tract and the feces of the pyridoxine deficient rats is significantly higher than in those of their respective controls. However, urinary excretion of radioactive manganese is reduced in pyridoxine deficient groups. These results suggest a role of pyridoxine in the regulation of manganese metabolism.

Radioactive cobalt and manganese in Discoverer 17 stainless steel

Co57 has been measured in the same stainless steel sample in which Fireman, DeFelice, and Tilles have found large amounts of tritium. The amount of Co57 produced in the steel was a factor of 23 less than that expected from in situ production of the tritium by alpha-stripping processes. Upper limits on the activities of Co58, Co80, and Mn54 have been established. Rough upper limits on the proton flux at the stainless-steel battery case are estimated from these values, and the results are compared with the proton flux necessary to produce Co57 by interactions with the Ni58 in the steel.

Szilard-Chalmers Reaction in Lithium Permanganate

THE chemical effects following neutron capture by the manganese atom in solid lithium permanganate have been previously investigated1. In agreement with the results found by Libby2 for potassium permanganate, it appears that most of the radioactive manganese in the solid exists in a chemical form, for example, MnO3+, which reacts with water to form manganese dioxide and with hydroxyl ion to form permanganate. The active species which exists in the solid undergoes rapid reaction when the solid is dissolved in aqueous solutions. It was felt that additional evidence on the behaviour of the active species might be obtained if non-aqueous solvents were used.

EFFECT OF CHANGES IN HYDRATION ON RECOIL FRAGMENTS IN NEUTRON-IRRADIATED PERMANGANATES

Anhydrous and hydrated crystals of sodium and lithium permanganates have been irradiated with neutrons. After irradiation, the crystals were subjected to hydration and dehydration, and the effect of this treatment on the retention of radioactive manganese in the form of the permanganate ion was determined. Hydration of irradiated anhydrous sodium and lithium permanganates decreases the retention observed when the solids are dissolved in basic solutions. Dehydration of the irradiated trihydrate causes little change in the observed retention for sodium permanganate, but a pronounced decrease for lithium permanganate. The significance of the results is discussed.

Radio-Autographs of Manganese in Plants

Flax, peas, cabbage, and tomato plants were grown in nutrient solutio::ls to which radio-active manganese (0.035 mc. of Mn54 ) was added with an excess of non-labelled manganese. The treatments included an excess of molybdenum as ammonium molybdate or sodium molybdate in addition to the excess manganese. With flax and peas a further radio-active treatment was studied in which the total manganese level was normal (0.5 p.p.m.). Radio-autographs and radio-assays of various plant tissues were made.

The Relative Probability for the Loss of Neutrons and Alpha-Particles from an Excited Nucleus

A stack of foils of very pure iron was bombarded with deuterons of energy 10 Mev. Excitation curves are thus obtained for a radioactive manganese of half-life 21 minutes made by a ($D,\ensuremath{\alpha}$) reaction and a radioactive cobalt of half-life 18 hours, made by a ($D,n$) reaction. These radioactive isotopes are both derived from the same parent iron isotope. Hence the radioactive yields reveal the relative probability of the escape of a neutron and the escape of an alpha-particle from the same excited nucleus. As the energy of the incident deuterons is increased the intensity of the 18-hour ($D,n$) cobalt attains a maximum value at about 7.5 Mev. There is a progressive increase with energy in the activity of the 21-minute ($D,\ensuremath{\alpha}$) radioactive manganese. At 10 Mev the escape of a neutron is about three times as probable as the escape of an alpha-particle.

Beta-Ray Spectra of Radioactive Manganese, Arsenic and Indium

The beta-ray spectra of radioactive manganese, arsenic and indium was obtained by measuring tracks produced in a cloud chamber situated in a magnetic field. Manganese and arsenic give spectra which can be resolved into two components. The end points of the two components are: for Mn, 1.2 and 2.9 MEV; for As, 1.09 and 3.4 MEV. The endpoint for In is 1.45 MEV.

Beta Ray Spectra of Artificially Produced Radioactive Elements

WE have investigated a series of ray spectra emitted by radioactive elements obtained by neutron bombardment. The results of the measurements together with those previously published by us in NATURE are given in tho accompanying table. Substances marked with an asterisk were separated by chemical methods analogous to those used by Szilard and Chalmers1. The radioactive manganese was separated from a solution of potassium permanganate, the radioactive P3 2 from carbon disulphide.
