Distribution of blood flow in the dog kidney. II. Saturation rates of inert diffusible tracers versus uptake of 15 mu microspheres during vasodilation and vasoconstriction.

While 15 mu microspheres (Ms) in principle provide a measure of glomerular flow, uptake rate of inert diffusible tracers indicates "effective" or "nutrient" flow, i.e. essentially postglomerular capillary flow. Paired measurements of glomerular and postglomerular flow were made in tissue samples from outer, middle and inner cortex (C1, C2, C3) and medullary zones. After a control Ms injection, renal vascular conductance (RVC) was altered in one kidney whereupon a second Ms injection was made, immediately followed by infusion of the 125I-iodoantipyrine and tritiated water. RVC was increased maximally by i.a. infusion of acetylcholine with and without reduced renal arterial pressure, whereas moderate vasodilation was produced by lowering renal arterial or rising ureteral pressure. RVC was reduced by i.a. or i.v. infusion of angiotensin II. Within a mean RVC range of 50 to 180% of control the fractional distribution of zonal postglomerular flow remained unaltered, in agreement with previous results obtained from local H2 gas desaturation rate. Glomerular flow was about 20% higher in C1, equal in C2 and 40% lower in C3 as compared to postglomerular flow in control kidneys. This disparity nearly disappeared during maximal vasodilation and tended to increase during vasoconstriction. The results might suggest a variable net postglomerular effective flow in radial direction through the renal cortex. Alternatively, the fractional redistribution of Ms might reflect a variable degree of Ms skimming at the afferent arteriolar inlets along the interlobular arteries.

Saturated‐Unsaturated Flow in Radial Directions Generated by an Injection Well

AbstractThe paper investigates water movement under saturated‐unsaturated flow conditions. The flows result from a vertically placed line source that injects water at a constant rate into radial directions in space. Soil water diffusivity is assumed to vary as a positive, arbitrary power of water saturation. Singular perturbation methods are applied to derive an analytical form of the solution as a power series in the perturbation parameter. The solution so concentrated is freed from singularities and breakdowns, and is therefore uniformly valid at all points of space and time. Explicit formulae are derived for the location of the wetting front as well as for the transition face between saturated and unsaturated flow regimes. Several cases of the diffusion function and injection rates are illustrated in the form of graphs. Relevance of the analysis to problems of flushing out dissolved salts from soils is briefly commented on.

Flow of a water jet into vacuum

At certain intervals excess water has to be dumped into space overboard of the Spacelab cabin. For the development of a useful nozzle the behaviour of a water jet flowing into vacuum was investigated experimentally and theoretical interpretations of the flow phenomena which were found are given. The influence of parameters like the shape of the nozzle, the temperature and the gas content of water were studied. At certain test conditions, the jet leaves the nozzle exit in bundled form and ends abruptly bursting into droplets and ice-particles. The “bursting”-mechanism is explained by a sudden boiling of the water in the jet causing the growth of vapor bubbles decomposing the jet. The formation of vapor bubbles is initiated by a superheating of the water of the jet caused by a sudden pressure drop and a cooling at the surface of the jet. The expansion of vapor bubbles in the jet is retarded by surface tension forces which results in a relaxation time for the bursting of the jet. The vapor flow in radial directions of the jet is approximately described by a plane radial source flow. The measurement of the pitot-pressure radially to the jet proves that the vapor flow is supersonic.

Virus concentration using hollow fiber membranes

A cellulose acetate hollow fiber membrane permeator was used to concentrate polio-l virus from 51. of water. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of several independent variables—radial flow direction, feed flow rate. feed concentration. cell type and effectiveness of backwashing—on process performance. The average virus recovery was 85° for a 50-fold dehydration in about 1 h. It is envisioned that the hollow fiber permeator. because of its compactness. low water hold-up. light weight and low cost. will be used as the first step of a system to concentrate and quantify viruses in contaminated waters.

Flow of second-order fluids over an enclosed rotating disc

This paper is devoted to a study of the flow of a second-order fluid (flowing with a small mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow m, taken negative for a net radial inflow) over a finite rotating disc enclosed within a coaxial cylinderical casing. The effects of the second-order terms are observed to depend upon two dimensionless parameters τ1 and τ2. Maximum values ξ1 and ξ2 of the dimensionless radial distances at which there is no recirculation, for the cases of net radial outflow (m>0) and net radial inflow (m<0) respectively, decrease with an increase in the second-order effects [represented by T(=τ1+τ2)]. The velocities at ξ1 and ξ2 as well as at some other fixed radii have been calculated for different T and the associated phenomena of no-recirculation/recirculation discussed. The change in flow phenomena due to a reversal of the direction of net radial flow has also been studied. The moment on the rotating disc increases with T.
