The Precipitation of Latent Herpes simplex Encephalitis by Anaphylactic Shock.

Summary1. Evidence that virus disease may develop a latent state is reviewed with an account of the reports of successful activations of latent infections.2. Nineteen instances of precipitation of latent herpetic infection in rabbits by anaphylactic shock are presented.3. Recovery of Herpes simplex virus from rabbit central nervous system during periods of (a) quiescence, (b) chronic encephalitis, (c) spontaneous exacerbations, and (d) anaphylactically induced precipitations of encephalitis is reported.

The author had studied the action of eserine, eseroline and urethane on some reflex activity of the central nervous system of rabbit and the result is as follows:1) Injections of eserine in doses of 1mg per kg body weight markedly lengthened the cremasteric reflex time and 0.1-0.25mg per kg body weight shortened the cremasteric reflex time, but at the beginning of the injection the reflex time was temporarily lengthened.2) Injection of eseroline in doses of 0.2-0.5mg per kg body weight had no effect on the cremasteric reflex time and the pharyngeal reflex time, and 1-8mg shortened these reflex times.3) Injections of urethane in doses of 5-50mg lengthened the reflex time. Among these results the initial depression of these reflex activities of eserine may be attributed to the presence of urethane grouping in the molecule of eserine.

MORPHOLOGIC DIFFERENTIATION OF MENNINGO-ENCEPHALITIS OF RABBITS AND EPIDEMIC (LETHARGIC) ENCEPHALITIS

Since my observation 1 that chronic inflammatory processes are commonly found in the central nervous system of rabbits, and that in many cases the condition takes on the form of an epidemic meningoencephalitis, similar findings have been reported from widely separated parts of the world. In England, Twort 2 found many of his laboratory animals affected. Levaditi 3 has found similar conditions in France, and in the eastern part of the United States, Flexner 4 reports the lesions in 50 per cent. of supposedly normal animals. The importance of the condition is obviously in the possibility that these spontaneous lesions in supposedly normal animals may be confused with the result of experimental procedure. It is interesting in this regard to consider some of the experiments which, in the opinion of the investigator concerned, have led to the production of lesions in the central nervous system of the animal.
