Anatomy education and clinical practice: students' views.

This study aimed to evaluate students' perspectives on the relevance of anatomy education to clinical practice throughout their studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje. The study was designed as a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based investigation and took place at the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje at the University of "Ss Cyril and Methodius", R. North Macedonia. The questionnaire form included demographics, five-point Likert items, and open-ended questions. Questionnaire data were collected from volunteer students participants, currently and not currently involved in anatomy education, consisting of 134 first-year and 87 fourth- and fifth-year students during March and April 2024. Junior students agreed that their anatomy education helped them achieve some important goals for clinical practice, such as adopting and applying medical terminology and the ability to visualize a three-dimensional human body map. Senior students were less convinced that the structures and concepts acquired during anatomy education were relevant to clinical practice, helped them acquire clinical knowledge and skills effectively, and understand the principles of evidence-based medicine. Both junior students and their senior colleagues disagreed that anatomy education succeeded in developing their self-confidence, teamwork, and communication skills. Both groups of students had similar preferences and suggestions for redesigning anatomy courses to focus on essential elements that are functionally and clinically relevant. This can be achieved through traditional and modern teaching methods, small group work, and the establishment of learning outcomes within clinically relevant contexts.

Clinical Success of Pulpotomies Using Intermediate Restorations and Preformed Metal Crowns in the Context of a Developing Country: A Retrospective Questionnaire-Based Investigation.

Background: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent dental illnesses in children. Untreated severe caries can damage teeth, requiring pulpotomy to save them. Objective: To evaluate the clinical success rate of treatments involving pulpotomies + IRM (Intermediate Restorative Material, composed of reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol polymers) + preformed metal crowns (PMCs) in primary teeth of children treated at a public university in Mexico. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional ambispective study was conducted on children aged 10 years or younger, treated at a public university in Mexico. A total of 1281 medical records from February 2018 to June 2023 were reviewed, yielding a sample of 199 children treated with pulpotomy + IRM + PMC. Information was collected via telephone interviews with parents/caregivers to inquire about any symptoms following the pulpotomy and metal crown treatments. Success was defined as the absence of pain, inflammation, or infection. Results: During the study period, the number of teeth treated with pulpotomy + IRM + PMC was 414, with follow-ups ranging from 6 to 69 months. Most participants were girls (54.3%), while 45.7% were boys. Out of the 167 pulpotomy + IRM + PMC treatments included in the study, the clinical success rate was 98.2%. Conclusions: The clinical success rate of primary teeth treated with pulpotomy + IRM + PMCs was high, close to 100%, based on evidence and symptom reports from parents/caregivers. It would be beneficial to implement its use in public health institutions in countries such as Mexico.

Understanding the Relationship between Sleep Quality and Physical Activity: Implications for Healthy Aging.

Understanding the general health and well-being of the aged population requires an understanding of several factors, among which the interplay between physical activity and sleep quality are the most efficient determinants. There is still much to learn about the precise ways that different components of sleep quality affect different kinds of physical activity in older persons, accordingly, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between these variables. An online questionnaire-based investigation was conducted between August and September 2023. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 1,437 participants aged 50 to 89 years. The questionnaire evaluated levels of physical activity, sleep satisfaction, and demographic data. We used cluster analysis, regression analysis, and factor analysis to investigate the connections between these variables. Factor analysis revealed a single factor that accounted for 51.95% of the variance in all variables linked to sleep, and this factor represented overall quality of sleep. Regression analysis revealed that gender significantly predicted sleep quality, with females reporting lower sleep satisfaction. While strenuous exercise did not significantly affect sleep quality, moderate exercise was a positive predictor of sleep quality that neared statistical significance. Furthermore, cluster analysis revealed that those who engaged in more physical activity had higher-quality sleep. These results highlight the significance of encouraging physical activity to improve older adults' sleep quality. Specific programs that promote moderate exercise may enhance this population's general health and sleep quality. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to create causality and modify intervention strategies aimed at promoting healthy aging.

Nurses' Perspectives on Risk Factors and Strategies to Control Workplace Violence: A National Survey in Vietnam.

We aimed to describe nurses' perspectives on risk factors and strategies to control workplace violence. To accomplish the study objectives, an online cross-sectional questionnaire-based investigation was conducted. The scales were developed in accordance with the guidelines provided by reputable organizations such as the International Labour Office (ILO), International Council of Nurses (ICN), WHO, and Public Services International (PSI), as well as previous scholarly works. Prior to implementation, the validity and reliability of the Likert scales were rigorously tested. The survey, conducted from March to May 2022, encompassed 163 public hospitals in Vietnam and was completed by 2,280 nurses employed in these institutions. According to nurses' perceptions, several key risk factors contribute to workplace violence (WPV). These include low socio-cultural awareness among patients and their family members, overcrowding in hospitals, non-compliance with hospital regulations, unrealistic expectations regarding treatment outcomes, communication issues among staff members. To effectively control WPV, nurses propose a range of strategies. These include enhancing the quality of hospital services and the hospital environment, fostering a positive workplace culture, establishing a comprehensive system for reporting and responding to incidents of WPV and developing patient care protocols. These strategies are believed to mitigate the occurrence and impact of WPV, ensuring a safer and more secure work environment for nurses. Workplace violence in healthcare settings is influenced by organizational, clinical, and environmental risk factors. Nurses adopt a multi-component approach to manage workplace violence. This study provides valuable insights for developing effective strategies to combat workplace violence in Vietnam.

The relationship between future orientation and academic anxiety: the mediating role of achievement goal orientation and sex difference

ABSTRACT Due to the prevalence of academic anxiety among primary school students and its long-term effect on the physical and mental health, researchers have carried out a lot of research on it. According to the control-value theory of achievement emotions, this cross-sectional study sought to explore the relationship between students’ future orientation and academic anxiety, to reveal the mediating effect of achievement goal orientations, and to test gender difference. A total of 5,330 students in grades 4–6 from 8 primary schools in China were included in the questionnaire-based investigation. The results showed that (1) girls’ academic anxiety, master-avoidance, and performance-avoidance goal orientations were significantly higher than those of boys, while performance-approach goal orientation was significantly lower than those of boys; (2) future orientation significantly positively predicted academic anxiety; (3) achievement goal orientation played a mediating role between future orientation and academic anxiety; and (4) there was a significant gender difference in this mediating effect. The four areas of achievement goal orientations have a complete mediating effect on academic anxiety for boys, but the master-approach and master-avoidance goal orientations play a partial mediating role between future orientation and academic anxiety for girls. This study contributes to deep understanding of academic anxiety among Chinese pupils, and implications for academic emotions research and educational practice.

Implementing exercise recommendations into clinical practice-new findings from mental health professionals' and patients' perspectives in a university psychiatric setting.

To date, concrete recommendations for physical activity in psychiatric treatments are limited. Thus, we evaluated knowledge, barriers and beliefs associated with exercise prescription of mental health professionals (MHP) to people with mental illnesses. We aimed to identify patients' barriers to exercise participation and to work out options addressing these barriers. In our cross-sectional and questionnaire-based investigation, we recruited medical, nursing and therapeutic staff and patients of a psychiatric clinic by email and personal contact. Questionnaires contained the German versions of The Exercise in Mental Illness Questionnaire (EMIQ-G) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). We included 100 MHP and 100 patients. MHP had significantly more knowledge regarding positive effects of exercise on general health than patients. Exercise was prescribed mostly (48.4%) or always (37.9%) by MHP. The data showed missing education in exercise prescriptions and different recommendation behavior. Male patients seemed to experience exercise more often as a positive distraction and had lower physical health barriers than females. Physical activity needs to be more integrated in psychiatric treatments. Some strategies as educating MHP and patients regarding potential benefits of exercise via psychoeducative brochures and adapting recommendations to individual symptoms could improve exercise behavior in psychiatric patients.

Dental student’s considerations on complete denture failures. A pilot questionnaire survey

Introduction. Dental students' considerations on the causes of treatment failure is an important issue for the teachers in understanding their medical reasoning. The research analyzed a broad variety of probable causes and contributing factors for complete denture failure that could concern both the patient and the dentist. The method ensured a thorough investigation of the factors that could affect complete denture treatment outcomes. Method. A questionnaire-based investigation was done among 50 dental students in their last year of Dental Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Iuliu Hatieganu” Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The subjects, both males and females, ranged between 24 to 45 years and were all in their final year of study. They were randomly chosen to represent a wide range of subjects. Results. The findings revealed that a vast majority of participants, 72%, believed the patient's psychological profile and mental state were key factors in complete denture failure. Inaccurate determination of the jaw relationships was the most significant factor contributing to complete denture failure regarding challenges associated with the fabrication process, according to the respondents (28%). Conclusions. The majority of respondents thought that patient-related factors, particularly those involving the patient's emotions and psychological profile, were the most important in the failure of complete dentures. Proper assessment of the jaw relations and occlusal deficiencies were the main variables when assessing the reasons for complete denture failures related to the fabrication process.

Promoting Minority Language Use to Foster Revitalisation: Insights From New Speakers of West Frisian

Abstract Language planners are increasingly aware of the importance of new speakers (individuals acquiring a language outside the home, typically later-on in life) for the revitalisation of minority languages. Yet, little is known about new speakers’ activation (the process by which they become active and habitual minority language users). This article presents a questionnaire-based investigation of new speakers’ (n = 264) use of West Frisian in Fryslân, Netherlands—and the role traditional speakers play in new speakers’ activation. Qualitative and quantitative data show that participants use West Frisian only rarely; and when they do use it, it is mainly in the classroom. Minority language interactions outside the classroom, with traditional speakers, consist mostly of a few tokenistic words or phrases. The findings show to what extent different behaviours by traditional speakers discourage and/or encourage new speakers’ minority language use, highlighting how the complex dynamics between the speaker groups are hindering revitalisation efforts. The article discusses the implications of these findings for language planning to promote the activation of new speakers, and thereby the revitalisation of West Frisian.

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among pregnant women in an antenatal clinic in Durban, South Africa.

Mass administration of vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the most efficient intervention against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Recently, vaccinations were shown to be safe and effective during pregnancy. However, vaccination rates are low in low- and middle-income countries, and vaccine hesitancy is a major limiting factor. To investigate the rate of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among pregnant women. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based investigation of 313 unvaccinated pregnant women attending an antenatal clinic in Durban, South Africa (SA). The questionnaire included clinical and socio-demographic data, and reasons for vaccine hesitancy were recorded and evaluated. Of 313 women participating, 126 (40.3%) were vaccinated against COVID-19, 21/313 = 6.7%; for those unvaccinated, 21/187 (13.9%) were planning to be vaccinated. However, most unvaccinated women, 174 of 187 (93%), showed COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. The COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy among pregnant women in Durban, SA, is exceptionally high. This requires urgent attention by the relevant health authorities (both professional health organisations and the SA Department of Health) as many countries experience different waves of the variants of SARS-CoV-2 and herd immunity may not have been achieved. This study showed a high vaccine acceptance hesitancy rate among pregnant women in SA.

A questionnaire-based investigation of the swimming puppy syndrome: 115 dogs.

Swimming Puppy Syndrome (SPS) is a benign reversible condition of unknown etiology in multiple dog breeds. Affected dogs show laterally abducted limbs and are unable to stand and walk on their own. The current knowledge of this condition derives from few case reports or small case series. Therefore, the aim of this study was to collect data on the clinical course from a large cohort of dogs with SPS with an online questionnaire supported by video footage. Potential risk factors were compared between 110 litters with SPS and 103 unaffected litters. SPS was reported in 115 dogs from 48 different breeds comprising a wide range of small, middle, and large breeds. Litters with SPS were significantly smaller than unaffected litters. Cesarean sections were reported more frequently in affected litters, but the overall rate of reported birth complications did not differ significantly from unaffected litters. Most puppies were able to stand and walk at a median age of 4.5 weeks (up to 12 weeks) and clinical signs resolved at a median age of six weeks (up to 12 weeks). Puppies from large breeds showed faster recovery than puppies from medium and small breeds. Occasionally, residual deficits were reported and only three dogs failed to recover. A clustering of SPS occurred in closely related litters in four kennels of four different dog breeds (Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Golden Retriever, Miniature Bull Terrier, Norwich Terrier). The study shows the benign clinical course of SPS in a large cohort of puppies from multiple dog breeds. Potential risk factors including reports on birth complications, size and muscle mass compared to littermates and diet of the dam during pregnany were evaluated and no influence on the occurrence of SPS was identified.

Moreover, relationship between post-RARP orgasmic dysfunction and erectile dysfunction has not been clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of orgasmic dysfunction in patients after RARP and identify the relevance of orgasmic dysfunction to the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). METHODS: We performed a single-center, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based investigation of patients who underwent RARP (n=523). Of the 523 patients, men who received neoadjuvant therapy (n=54), adjuvant therapy (n=46), or died from other causes (n=6) were excluded, leaving 417 patients for analysis. All patients were treated at our institution between 3 and 111 months prior to the start of the study. Six questions on sexual activity, orgasmic function, altered perception of orgasms, dysorgasmia, and climacturia were developed. Questionnaires about orgasmic dysfunction and IIEF were mailed with a letter inviting patients to participate in the study. The primary outcome measure was the prevalence of orgasmic dysfunction. The relationship between orgasmic dysfunction and IIEF domain scores was analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, 259 questionnaires were available for analyses. Among sexually active patients (n=145), 33 (22.8%) reported anorgasmia, 22 (15.1%) reported dysorgasmia, and 44 (30.3%) reported climacturia. The IIEF-erectile function (EF), IIEF-sexual desire (SD), IIEF-intercourse satisfaction (IS), and IIEF-overall satisfaction (OS) scores of the anorgasmia group were significantly lower than those of the non-anorgasmia group (2.33±1.63 versus 7.93±7.94, p<0.001; 3.91±2.05 versus 5.13±1.73, p<0.001; 0.39±1.09 versus 1.92±3.44, p=0.013; 3.73±1.59 versus 5.38±1.78, p<0.001). Also, the IIEF-EF, IIEF-SD, and IIEF-OS scores of the dysorgasmia group were significantly lower than those of the non-dysorgasmia group (4.36±4.86 versus 8.81±8.32, p=0.018; 4.32±1.73 versus 5.32±1.68, p=0.014; 4.46±1.65 versus 5.60±1.75, p=0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Orgasmic dysfunction is a common adverse effect of RARP. Moreover, these results indicate that anorgasmia and dysorgasmia may be associated with erectile function and may affect sexual desire and satisfaction after RARP. Urban Lived experience of Contemporary Iconic Architecture in the Kingdom of Bahrain

Architecture, of all art forms, is bound to influence people's daily lives. The 20th century witnessed brisk urban developments. SKYSCRAPERS have become a new dialect of urbanism, tied to the ideologies of tall buildings, generating a so-called ‘ICON” that stands tall and twisted several times, backed with design principles. This study documents the procedure of conducting a pilot research for a questionnaire-based investigation and fieldwork observation, examining the perception and sensory experience of the people living among the extraordinary superstructure, ‘THE BAHRAIN WORLD TRADE CENTER’ and the factors that leave an impression on their minds and impact their bodily experience, addressing the grandeur, the scale, the place where its located, and the technology or materials that have been used.

A questionnaire-based investigation to explore the social and legal implications derived from the use of camera traps for wildlife monitoring and conservation

Camera traps are non-invasive monitoring tools largely used to detect species presence or population dynamics. The use of camera traps for wildlife conservation purposes raises questions about privacy invasion when images of people are taken. Throughout the use of an online questionnaire survey, we assessed the degree of knowledge about social and legal implications derived from the deployment of camera traps. Our results revealed a consistent gap in term of knowledge about legal implications derived by the use of camera traps among respondents. Most of those who were aware of such legislation did not take specific actions to prevent legal consequences, probably to reduce the risk of theft or vandalism. Most respondents declared that images of people were unintentionally collected. Some of them stated that images which may violate privacy issues or showed nefarious activities were stored for internal processing or reported to local authorities. Our research thus confirmed that privacy invasion is a widely poorly treated issue in the wildlife conservation dimension. Furthermore, despite camera traps being used to improve conservation efforts, the detection of individuals engaged in private or illegal activities poses further complications in terms of pursuance of legal actions when an individual is identified by these images. So, appropriate guidelines for images analysis need to be designed, and subsequently followed. Lastly, adopting effective methods to protect cameras from the risk of theft and/or vandalism is of primary concern.

However, orgasmic dysfunction, such as orgasm-associated urinary incontinence (climacturia) and pain (dysorgasmia), anorgasmia, and altered perception of orgasm also occur in this context. The etiology of orgasmic dysfunction is not well understood, and it remains unclear how many and which patients with RP are affected, especially those who had robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the incidence and extent of orgasmic dysfunction in patients after the RARP, and identify the factors that can help predict patients at risk. METHODS: Between October 2010 and November 2019, we performed a single-center, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based investigation of patients who underwent RARP (n = 523). All the patients were treated at our institution between 3 and 111 months prior to beginning the study. Six questions on sexual activity, orgasmic function, altered perception of orgasms, dysorgasmia, and climacturia were developed. The questionnaires were mailed in February 2020, including a letter inviting patients to participate in the study. The primary outcome measure was the prevalence of orgasmic dysfunction. Predictive factors were identified using the logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: A total of 259 questionnaires were available for analysis. Among sexually active patients (n = 145), 33 (22.8%) reported anorgasmia, and 83 (57.2%) reported decreased orgasm intensity after versus before the RARP. Twenty-two (15.1%) patients reported dysorgasmia; among these patients, pain was experienced almost always or always in 13.6%, sometimes in 13.6%, and a few times in 72.8% of the cases. Climacturia was reported in 44 patients (30.3%). Urinary incontinence (odds ratio, 3.13; 95% confidence interval, 1.20−8.15) increased the risk of climacturia after the RARP. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that orgasmic dysfunction after RARP is relatively common and should be considered by clinicians and researchers. It remains difficult to predict which patients are at risk before surgery. However, urinary incontinence can help identify patients who are at risk after RARP. Awareness, Knowledge, and Interest about Prebiotics-A Study among Romanian Consumers.

The consumer awareness towards healthier diets and the impact of nutrition on health has triggered an increase in the production and commercialization of foods with health claims. The scientific literature classifies these food products as functional foods, with a role in promoting health and preventing diseases, and they had a market share of almost 200 million EUR in 2019. Prebiotics are considered functional foods, referring to substrates that are selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit, as defined by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics. Several health benefits are associated with the consumption of prebiotics; however, specific requirements must demonstrate the causality between the specific ingredient and the claimed effect. Health claims associated with food products are assessed in the European Union and need to be supported by rigorous scientific evidence before being authorized and permitted on the market. Consumers’ perception of this topic is influenced by the various stakeholders involved. The current work aimed to study the consumers’ perception and interest and to assess the knowledge on the prebiotic concept in Romania. The consumer interest level was quantified by using the web-based data tool Google Trends, and a questionnaire-based investigation was designed. The collected data were analyzed with the help of the SPSS program, and crosstabulation was used to identify the influence of socio-demographic characteristics on diet choice and awareness of prebiotics. A total of 303 persons answered the online applied questionnaire, grouped as young consumers (15–24 years old) and adults (25–64 years old). Even if most responders were familiar with the term of prebiotics (74% of total responders), some results were contradictory regarding their knowledge. The work emphasized the need to carry out educational campaigns and inform consumers on the relationship between certain food ingredients and health outcomes in a clear way and based on a rigorous assessment of the scientific evidence.

Aspects of Prevention of Urinary Tract Infections Associated with Urinary Bladder Catheterisation and Their Implementation in Nursing Practice.

In the case of the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) related to healthcare provision, high-quality and comprehensively provided nursing care is essential. Implementation of preventive strategies is based on recommended procedures, and the introduction of whole sets of measures has been shown to be effective. The objective of this research is to find out whether the providers of acute bed care have implemented the steps of CAUTI prevention, and specifically which measures leading to improved quality of care in the area of urinary infections are already in place. To determine this, we carried out quantitative research. Data were collected using a questionnaire-based investigation; we used two non-standardised and one standardised questionnaire, and the respondents were general nurses in management positions (n = 186). The results revealed that result-related CAUTI indicators are monitored by only one-third of the respondents, and records of catheterisation indication are not kept by 17.3% of general nurses. The results of the research showed deficiencies in the monitoring of CAUTI outcome and process indicators, and a weakness of the implemented preventive measures is the maintenance of catheterisation documentation. Periodic CAUTI prevention training is not implemented as recommended. It is positive that there are well-working teams of HAI prevention experts in hospitals.

Assessment of knowledge and acceptance to the era of uncertainty (Covid-19) among exposed undergraduate and postgraduate dental students- A Questionnaire-based Investigation

Introduction: Dental students are facing complex problems during the COVID-19. So, it is important to assess their knowledge, risk perception, attitude, vaccination, measures taken for prevention by the dental students. Objective: Assess awareness, attitude and risk perception among dental students, COVID 19 scenario. Methodology: A questionnaire-based survey is drawn in an online form, comprising of 19- variable, structured, multiple choice questions, and respondents are under graduate and post graduate dental students. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20.0. Results: Total 105 responses, 45% under graduate, 55% post graduate students. More than 50% responded, dentists are more exposed than other health professionals, at high risk for infection. 45% are aware of all COVID-19 symptoms. 44.4% worried to return for dental clinical activities.74.7% took preventive measures in clinical. 64% received general information about biosafey measures to COVID-19 without any practice. 50% agreed treating vaccinated patients reduced risk for transmission and 70%, dentists play major role in educating patients. Conclusion: Dental students revealed good knowledge regarding COVID-19, they accepted this uncertainty by taking all the measures to prevent being infected.

Health services utilization of Chinese patients with Huntington\u2019s disease: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundHuntington’s disease (HD) is a hereditary disease which could have a large impact on patients’ quality of life. As the neurodegenerative disorders progress, HD patients are expected to regularly take follow-up medical visits for proper treatment. This study aimed to analyze the general situation of health services utilization of Chinese HD patients and factors associated with their adherence to follow-up medical visits.MethodsWe collected data from a questionnaire-based investigation conducted by the Chinese Huntington’s Disease Association. Data from 232 respondents were included to investigate whether they adhered to regular follow-up medical visits and the influencing factors. Based on Andersen’s behavioral model, the independent variables were categorized into predisposing, enabling and need factors. The variables were analyzed by chi-square test and stepwise logistic regression analysis.ResultsThirty-one point nine percent of the respondents had regular follow-up medical visits over the past year. Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences with 6 factors (P < 0.05), among which, according to logistic regression, 2 enabling factors (reimbursement of health insurance, need for accompanying family members to follow-up visits) and 3 need factors (perceived stage of disease, perceived effectiveness of drugs, self-care ability) were independent influencing factors of follow-up medical behaviors of Chinese HD patients. The predisposing factors investigated here did not play a part in determining patients’ adherence to follow-up visits.ConclusionsPoor adherence to medical visits among Chinese HD patients is derived from multiple factors, including reimbursement of health insurance, perceived stage of disease and effectiveness of drugs, need for accompanying family members and self-care ability. To promote HD patients’ health services utilization, the improvement of the health insurance system, the enhancement of social support and the development of therapeutic approaches still have a long way to go.
