A Machine Learning-Based Tropospheric Prediction Approach for High-Precision Real-Time GNSS Positioning.

For high-precision positioning applications, various GNSS errors need to be mitigated, including the tropospheric error, which remains a significant error source as it can reach up to a few meters. Although some commercial GNSS correction data providers, such as the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) Centimeter Level Augmentation Service (CLAS), have developed real-time precise regional troposphere products, the service is available only in limited regional areas. The International GNSS Service (IGS) has provided precise troposphere correction data in TRO format post-mission, but its long latency of 1 to 2 weeks makes it unable to support real-time applications. In this work, a real-time troposphere prediction method based on the IGS post-processing products was developed using machine learning techniques to eliminate the long latency problem. The test results from tropospheric predictions over a year using the proposed method indicate that the new method can achieve a prediction accuracy (RMSE) of 2 cm, making it suitable for real-time applications.

Performance comparison of orbit and clock augmentation corrections from PPP-B2b, HAS and CLAS

Precise Point Positioning (PPP) augmentation corrections can enhance the accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning. Three prominent PPP augmentation services: the third generation of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3) PPP-B2b, Europe's Galileo High Accuracy Service (HAS) and Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) Centimeter Level Augmentation Service (CLAS), are evaluated and compared, contributing to the optimal utilization of these services. Based on a 25-day dataset in March 2023, all the three services have made significant improvements in GPS orbit accuracy compared to the broadcast ephemeris. Galileo HAS achieved the highest three-dimension (3D) orbit accuracy for both GPS and Galileo (10.5 and 10.4 cm), followed by CLAS (48.1 and 16.3 cm) and PPP-B2b (GPS: 73.0 cm, BDS-3: 44.6 cm). This distinct performance of PPP-B2b orbits is found for the first time to be related to the large constellation rotation errors, which accounts for roughly half of the orbit errors of along and cross components. Regarding clock errors, PPP-B2b and HAS enhanced GPS clock accuracy to 0.20 ns (70 %) and 0.17 ns (74 %), respectively, over the broadcast clock (0.66 ns), while CLAS shows a much smaller improvement. Moderate correlations of 0.3–0.8 between orbit and clock errors are observed for the three augmentation corrections. For signal in space ranging error (SISRE), HAS (GPS:5.5 cm, Galileo:4.9 cm) outperforms PPP-B2b (GPS:14.3 cm, BDS-3:8.9 cm) and CLAS (GPS:23.6 cm, Galileo:13.7 cm). The 2-hourly kinematic positioning results with an accuracy of better than 20 cm (95th percentile) for the horizontal and vertical component, could be achieved for both PPP-B2b and HAS within 20 min within their service area. It is not recommended rely solely on the orbit/clock/code bias of CLAS for precise positioning, as the positioning accuracy is influenced by the SISRE. PPP-RTK of CLAS achieves horizontal 10 cm (95th percentile) and rapid convergence of mostly less than a minute by incorporating phase bias and atmospheric corrections.

Some new LDPC-coded orthogonal modulation schemes for high data rate transmissions in navigation satellite systems

In this paper, we design some new LDPC-coded orthogonal modulation (OM) schemes for high data rate transmissions (HDRT) in the navigation satellite systems. We analyze their error-performance utilizing soft-decision bit metrics and compare them with those of L61 and L62 signals in the quasi-zenith satellite system (QZSS) for centimeter-level augmentation services (CLAS). Compare to the L62 signals of QZSS, both schemes have higher data rates (14.6% increase) and essentially the better error performance at high SNR region. At the region where frame error rate (FER) =10−3, one of the proposed schemes has better error performance of 1.4 dB in terms of carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N0).

Assessment of Radio Frequency Compatibility for New Radio Navigation Satellite Service Signal Design in the L6-Band

The L- and S-bands are becoming increasingly congested with the modernization of radio navigation satellite service (RNSS) systems and the development of a new satellite navigation system. In order to solve the problem of frequency band congestion, compatibility performance assessment is essential when designing a new RNSS signal. This paper proposes a three-step compatibility assessment methodology for the design of new RNSS signals and evaluates the compatibility performance of L6-band signals based on the proposed methodology. The open signals of Galileo, the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), and the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), as well as the three candidate signals of the new RNSS, are considered for the compatibility assessment. Based on the assessment results, this paper shows that the interference caused by the introduction of a new RNSS signal in the L6-band is tolerable.

Evaluation of L6 augmentation signal reception characteristics and positioning accuracy of compact and lightweight GNSS antennas

Applications requiring outdoor position estimation, such as unmanned construction and delivery automation, focus on receiving global navigation satellite system (GNSS) correction information from satellites for high-precision positioning. In particular, the delivery of correction information for the Galileo high-accuracy service (HAS) and quasi-zenith satellite system (QZSS) centimeter-level augmentation service (CLAS) is based on a new frequency band called L6. The L6 signal is a new type of GNSS signal, and a GNSS antenna corresponding to the frequency of the L6 signal (1275.46 MHz) is required to receive and decode the correction messages. The reception characteristics of the L6 signal are important for receiving correction information. However, the reception performance of antennas supporting the new L6 signal has not been evaluated. Therefore, in this study, we evaluate the reception characteristics of the L6 signal of a compact and lightweight L6-compatible antenna, and the multipath characteristics, which are the fundamental performance of the antenna that affects high-precision positioning. In a 24-hour static test, each antenna’s signal reception performance and multipath characteristics were evaluated, and significant differences were found in performance among the antennas capable of receiving the L6 signal. Furthermore, in a kinematic test, we evaluated high-accuracy positioning using QZSS CLAS with multiple antennas and showed that centimeter-level positioning using L6 augmentation signals is possible even with compact and lightweight GNSS antennas. These evaluations provide guidelines for antenna selection when high-precision positioning using L6 signals is employed in various applications.

Evaluation of Spire GNSS-R reflectivity from multiple GNSS constellations for soil moisture estimation

ABSTRACT Spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has emerged as a pivotal tool with different land applications, prominently encompassing soil moisture estimation. In contrast to conventional radiometer satellites commonly used for this purpose, GNSS-R offers higher spatiotemporal coverage while maintaining cost-effectiveness. The potential of using Global Positioning System (GPS) reflections measured by the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission to retrieve soil moisture has been previously demonstrated. In 2019, Spire Global Inc. launched their first GNSS-R satellites, which now comprise a constellation of four CubeSats. These satellites track reflections from multi-constellation, encompassing GPS, Galileo, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), and Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS). In this study, an analysis and validation of Spire GNSS-R L1B surface reflectivity for soil moisture retrieval within east Australia during an eight-month period in 2021 is presented. A comparison of the estimated Spire surface reflectivity to that of CYGNSS is performed, unveiling analogous behavioural patterns and biases across both missions. Soil moisture is estimated using observations from Spire GPS-only, Spire multi-constellation, and CYGNSS. The Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) retrievals are used as the reference, presuming a linear relationship between changes in soil moisture and changes in reflectivity. Our results indicate that the Spire GNSS-R mission can detect variations in soil moisture with a performance comparable to that of CYGNSS. A median unbiased root-mean-square difference (ubRMSD) of 0.062 m3.m−3 is found for both Spire GPS and multi-constellation when using 9-km products and SMAP as the reference.

GNSS/RNSS Integrated PPP Time Transfer: Performance with Almost Fully Deployed Multiple Constellations and a Priori ISB Constraints Considering Satellite Clock Datums

Currently, the space segment of all the five satellite systems capable of providing precise time transfer services, namely BDS (including BDS-3 and BDS-2), GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), has almost been fully deployed, which will definitely benefit the precise time transfer with satellite-based precise point positioning (PPP) technology. This study focuses on the latest performance of the BDS/GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/QZSS five-system combined PPP time transfer. The time transfer accuracy of the five-system integrated PPP was 0.061 ns, and the frequency stability was 1.24 × 10−13, 2.28 × 10−14, and 8.74 × 10−15 at an average time of 102, 103, and 104 s, respectively, which significantly outperforms the single-system cases. We also verified the outstanding time transfer performance of the five-system integrated PPP at locations with limited sky view. In addition, a method is proposed to mitigate the day-boundary jumps of inter-system bias (ISB) estimates by considering the difference in the satellite clock datums between two adjacent days. After applying a priori ISB constraints, the time transfer accuracy of the five-system integrated PPP can be improved by 37.9–51.6%, and the frequency stability can be improved by 14.8–21.6%, 5.3–7.6% and 20.0–29.6% at the three average times, respectively.

Signal-in-Space Range Error of the Global BeiDou Navigation Satellite System and Comparison with GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS

Based on the standard of precise multisystem orbit and clock offset, the evaluation methods of satellite orbit, satellite clock offset and the signal-in-space range error (SISRE) from broadcast ephemeris were given in this study. The SISRE was used as a key performance index to compare the global BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS-3) with the regional navigation satellite system (BDS-2), Global Positioning System (GPS), Galileo, Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS), and Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS). Through the combination of domestic tracking stations and inter satellite links, the orbit determination accuracy of BDS-3 has been significantly improved. The radial (R), tangential (T) and normal (N) direction orbit accuracies of BDS-3 medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites were 0.08, 0.37, and 0.34 m, respectively, which were considerably better than those of other satellite navigation systems. The R-, T-, and N-direction orbit accuracies of BDS-3 inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) satellites were 0.17, 0.59, and 0.56 m, respectively, which were better than those of QZSS IGSO satellites. The R-, T-, and N-direction orbit accuracies of BDS-3 geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites were 0.27, 3.42, and 1.29 m, respectively, revealing considerable accuracy advantages in the R and N directions compared with QZSS GEO, although performance in the T direction was inferior. For the clock offset, the BDS-3 MEO satellites had an accuracy of 1.83 ns, which was noticeably superior, similar, slightly inferior, and superior to those of BDS-2, GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS. The clock offset accuracies of BDS-3 IGSO and GEO satellites were 3.13 and 3.17 ns, respectively, which were slightly better than those of QZSS IGSO and GEO satellites but did not have an obvious advantage over BDS-2. The primary reason could be that the launch time of the two types of BDS-3 satellites was close to the analysis period, and therefore, the clocks may be still in the aging process. Considering only orbit error, the average SISRE (orb) of BDS-3 MEO, Galileo, GPS, and GLONASS was 0.10, 0.28, 0.57, and 1.03 m, respectively. The SISRE (orb) of BDS-3 IGSO was 0.19 m, which was marginally greater than that of BDS-3 MEO but smaller than those of the other systems and considerably smaller than that (0.90 m) of QZSS IGSO. The SISRE (orb) of BDS-3 GEO was 0.60 m, which was comparable to that of GPS (0.59 m) and considerably smaller than that of QZSS GEO (0.91 m) satellites. Considering both orbit and clock offset error, the SISRE of BDS-3 MEO satellites was 0.52 m, which was slightly greater than that of Galileo (0.40 m), marginally smaller than that of GPS (0.59 m), and considerably smaller than that of GLONASS (2.33 m). The BDS-3 IGSO satellites had a SISRE of 0.90 m, which was greater than those of GPS and Galileo but comparable to that of QZSS IGSO (0.92 m). The average SISRE of BDS-3 GEO satellites was 1.15 m, which was greater than those of GPS and Galileo and slightly greater than that of QZSS0.95 m GEO satellites, but smaller than that of GLONASS.

GNSS PPP with added QZSS: Positioning and time-frequency transfer

Regional navigation system Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) play an important role in positioning, time and frequency transfer for the Asia-Pacific region under high cut-off angle. This paper combines QZSS and the major navigation systems for Precise Point Positioning (PPP) positioning and time–frequency transfer. The time–frequency transfer experimental results show that with the addition of QZSS, the clock difference accuracy and the frequency stability of the corresponding time link are significantly improved for the case of cut-off above 15°. The corresponding range is between 5% and 30% of accuracy, and between 1% and 90% of frequency stability.

Addressing early warning challenges using satellites to improve emergency evacuation

Disaster early warning information, if it reaches the communities at-risk with enough lead time, allows individuals to evacuate and subsequently save their lives and livelihoods. However, in many areas of Asia, early warning information does not reach the communities at-risk. Even if it reaches, the warning information is unclear, distorted, or delayed. This paper aims to understand the underlying factors affecting the dissemination of early warning information, and how it hinders community evacuation in the event of a disaster. It specifically looks into the tools and procedures that are adopted in early warning systems (EWS) as well as the challenges that the communities experienced in receiving the warning information. The paper presents three case studies, including the coastal communities in Bangladesh, the Himalayan communities in Bhutan, and the herder communities in Mongolia to investigate the challenges in EWS. In these communities, the ground-based telecommunication systems, internet and cellular network, have limited coverage. Additionally, the communication infrastructures in these areas are vulnerable to disruptions during extreme disaster events. Using satellites to transmit the warning information to communities at-risk will not only augment the existing ground-based EWS but will also improve the evacuation procedures. While this paper builds the case for using the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) to enhance the effectiveness of disseminating early warning information, such effort alone is not enough. Subsequent policy and practical actions must be also undertaken to improve the early warning systems to facilitate effective evacuation.

BDS/QZSS integrated PPPAR time–frequency transfer

Based on BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS), the Quasi-Zenith satellite system (QZSS) was added to assist in studying the precise point positioning (PPP) time and frequency transfer effect. Ambiguity resolution (AR) is the key to the rapid conversion of the PPP method. Therefore, this paper also used the ionospheric-free combination and the observable-specific signal bias (OSB) product of Wuhan University to test the time–frequency transfer effect of BDS ambiguity-fixed. In this way, BDS PPP, BDS + QZSS PPP, BDS PPP-AR, and global positioning system (GPS) PPP methods were formed. Six stations located in Japan and Australia were selected for experiments. Conclusion: BDS can reach the same level as GPS; when the cut-off angle is greater than 15°, adding QZSS could improve the success rate, accuracy, and frequency stability of the solution of time links effectively; the ambiguity fixed strategy can improve the time transfer accuracy but not the short-term frequency stability.

Performance assessment of RTPPP positioning with SSR corrections and PPP-AR positioning with FCB for multi-GNSS from MADOCA products

The state-space representation (SSR) product of satellite orbit and clock is one of the most essential corrections for real-time precise point positioning (RTPPP). When it comes to PPP ambiguity resolution (PPP-AR), the fractional cycle bias (FCB) matters. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has developed a multi-GNSS (i.e., global navigation satellite system) advanced demonstration tool for orbit and clock analysis (MADOCA), providing free and precise orbit and clock products. Because of the shortage of relevant studies on performance evaluation, this paper focuses on the performance assessment of RTPPP and PPP-AR by real-time and offline MADOCA products. To begin with, the real-time MADOCA products are evaluated by comparing orbit and clock with JAXA final products, which gives an objective impression of the correction. Second, PPP tests in static and simulated kinematic mode are conducted to further verify the quality of real-time MADOCA products. Finally, the offline MADOCA products are assessed by PPP and PPP-AR comparisons. The results are as follows: (1) Orbit comparisons produced an average error of about 0.04–0.13 m for the global positioning system (GPS), 0.14–0.16 m for the global navigation satellite system (GLONASS), and 0.07–0.08 m for the quasi-zenith satellite system (QZSS). The G15 satellite had the most accurate orbit, with a difference of 0.04 m between the JAXA orbit products and MADOCA’s counterpart, while the R07 satellite had the least accurate orbit with a difference of 0.16 m. Clock products had an accuracy of 0.4–1.3 ns for GPS, 1.4–1.6 ns for GLONASS, and 0.7–0.8 ns for QZSS in general. The G15 satellite had the most accurate clock with a difference of only 0.40 ns between the JAXA clock products and MADOCA products, and the R07 satellite had the least accurate clock with a difference of 1.55 ns. The orbit and clock products for GLONASS performed worse than those of GPS and QZSS. (2) After convergence, the positioning accuracy was 3.0–8.1 cm for static PPP and 8.1–13.7 cm for kinematic PPP when using multi-GNSS observations and precise orbit and clock products. The PFRR station performed the good performance both in static and kinematic mode with an accuracy of 2.99 cm and 8.08 cm, respectively, whereas the CPNM station produced the worst static performance with an error of 8.09 cm, and the ANMG station produced the worst kinematic performance with a counterpart of 13.69 cm. (3) The PPP-AR solution was superior to the PPP solution, given that, with respect to PPP, post-processing PPP-AR improved the positioning accuracy and convergence time by 13–32 % (3–89 %) in GPS-only mode by 2–15 % (5–60 %) in GPS/QZSS mode. Thus, we conclude that the current MADOCA products can provide SSR corrections and FCB products with positioning accuracy at the decimeter or even centimeter level, which could meet the demands of the RTPPP and PPP-AR solutions.

Research on autonomous driving technology for a robot vehicle in mountainous farmland using the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System

The centimeter-level augmentation service (CLAS) provided by Michibiki (also known as the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS)) can be utilized as a navigation sensor for a robot vehicle in orchards, which are often located in mountainous areas with steep slopes. Buildings, windbreaks, and the inclination of the antenna affected the CLAS less than they did the virtual reference station real-time kinematic (VRS-RTK) method, which is one of the most common navigation sensors for autonomous driving in agriculture. The time to first fix (TTFF) of the CLAS was 60 s earlier near buildings and 90 s earlier in case of a tilted antenna compared to that of the VRS-RTK. Moreover, the CLAS does not depend on an internet signal such as that provided for mobile broadband, since it uses augmentation information from the QZSS. A positioning test in a real vineyard, where grapevines are trained over vertical trellises, revealed that the CLAS could acquire FIX solutions constantly, whereas the VRS-RTK could not because of weak internet signals. The accuracy of the CLAS was less than 6.4 cm for a 95% confidence interval at static positioning and less than 3 cm root mean square (RMS) at dynamic positioning. A robot vehicle navigated by the CLAS autonomously traveled two paths, including a turning maneuver, with less than 9 cm RMS and less than 20 cm MAX. The results showed that the CLAS enabled the robot vehicle to work autonomously without any collisions in an actual vineyard.

Estimation of the effect of GNSS positioning errors on the dose rate calculation concerning aerial radiation monitoring

Four global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers were installed in a helicopter to reduce positioning errors in aerial radiation monitoring. The effect of positioning errors on the conversion of the counting rate of the detector to the ambient dose equivalent rate at the ground level was evaluated. The positioning results obtained by receiving the centimeter-class augmentation signal known as the L-band experiment, which the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System generates on an experimental basis for a limited time, were used as the reference values. A comparison between horizontal and vertical positioning errors among four receivers demonstrated that the vertical errors were larger than the horizontal errors. They did not differ among receivers, whereas the horizontal errors varied according to the characteristics of the receivers, particularly in mountainous areas; the errors tended to be larger when the terrain change at the measurement point was larger. The median effects of the vertical and horizontal errors on the calculated values of the radiation dose rate at the ground level were 3%–6% and 1%–5%, respectively, and the maximum possible effect of the positioning error was 20%–32%. The fact that the receiver with the highest number of available satellites had larger errors than the other receivers indicated that the elevation angles of satellites and the augmentation signals play an important role in improving the positioning accuracy when the number of available satellites reduces in mountainous areas. This study has provided insight into selecting a suitable GNSS receiver for surveying by vehicles such as helicopters, aircraft, and drones, which are required to perform 3D positioning in complex terrains.

Performance of Multi-GNSS in the Asia-Pacific Region: Signal Quality, Broadcast Ephemeris and Precise Point Positioning (PPP)

Since BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) and Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) have more visible satellites in the Asia-Pacific region, and navigation satellites of Global Positioning System (GPS), Galileo satellite navigation system (Galileo), and GLONASS satellite navigation system (GLONASS) are uniformly distributed globally, the service level of multi-mode Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in the Asia-Pacific region should represent the best service capability. Based on the observation data of 10 Multi-GNSS Experiment (MGEX) stations, broadcast ephemeris and precision ephemeris from 13 to 19 October 2021, this paper comprehensively evaluated the service capability of multi-GNSS in the Asia-Pacific region from three aspects of observation data quality, broadcast ephemeris performance, and precision positioning level. The results show that: (1) the carrier-to-noise-density ratio (C/N0) quality of the GPS and Galileo is the best, followed by BDS and GLONASS, and QZSS is the worst. GPS, BDS-2, GLONASS, and QZSS pseudorange multipath values range from 0 to 0.6 m, while Galileo system and BDS-3 pseudorange multipath values range from 0 to 0.8 m. (2) In terms of broadcast ephemeris accuracy, BDS-3 broadcast ephemeris has the best orbit, and the three-dimensional (3D) Root Mean Square (RMS) is 0.21 m; BDS-2 was the worst, with a 3D RMS of 1.99 m. The broadcast ephemeris orbits of GPS, Galileo, QZSS, and GLONASS have 3D RMS of 0.60 m, 0.62 m, 0.83 m, and 1.27 m, respectively. For broadcast ephemeris clock offset: Galileo has the best performance, 0.61 ns, GLONASS is the worst, standard deviation (STD) is 3.10 ns, GPS, QZSS, BDS-3 and BDS-2 are 0.65 ns, 0.75 ns, and 1.72 ns, respectively. For signal-in-space ranging errors (SISRE), the SISRE results of GPS and Galileo systems are the best, fluctuating in the range of 0 m–2 m, followed by QZSS, BDS-3, Galileo, and BDS-2. (3) GPS, BDS, GLONASS, Galileo, GPS/QZSS, and BDS/QZSS were used for positioning experiments. In static PPP, the convergence time and positioning accuracy of GPS show the best performance. The positioning accuracy of GPS/QZSS and BDS/QZSS is improved compared with that of GPS and BDS. In terms of kinematic PPP, the convergence time and positioning accuracy of GPS/QZSS and BDS/QZSS are improved compared with that of GPS and BDS. In addition to GLONASS and Galileo systems, the other combinations outperformed 3 cm, 3 cm, and 5 cm in the east, north, and up directions.

Instantaneous Best Integer Equivariant Position Estimation Using Google Pixel 4 Smartphones for Single- and Dual-Frequency, Multi-GNSS Short-Baseline RTK.

High-precision global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning and navigation can be achieved with carrier-phase ambiguity resolution when the integer least squares (ILS) success rate (SR) is high. The users typically prefer the float solution under the scenario of having a low SR, and the ILS solution when the SR is high. The best integer equivariant (BIE) estimator is an alternative solution since it minimizes the mean squared errors (MSEs); hence, it will always be superior to both its float and ILS counterparts. There has been a recent development of GNSSs consisting of the Global Positioning System (GPS), Galileo, Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), which has made precise positioning with Android smartphones possible. Since smartphone tracking of GNSS signals is generally of poorer quality than with geodetic grade receivers and antennas, the ILS SR is typically less than one, resulting in the BIE estimator being the preferred carrier phase ambiguity resolution option. Therefore, in this contribution, we compare, for the first time, the BIE estimator to the ILS and float contenders while using GNSS data collected by Google Pixel 4 (GP4) smartphones for short-baseline real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning. It is demonstrated that the BIE estimator will always give a better RTK positioning performance than that of the ILS and float solutions while using both single- and dual-frequency smartphone GNSS observations. Lastly, with the same smartphone data, we show that BIE will always be superior to the float and ILS solutions in terms of the MSEs, regardless of whether the SR is at high, medium, or low levels.

Fault-Free Protection Level Equation for CLAS PPP-RTK and Experimental Evaluations.

Centimeter level augmentation system (CLAS) of the quasi-zenith satellite system (QZSS) is the first precise point positioning-real time kinematic (PPP-RTK) augmentation system of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), which is currently providing services for Japan. CLAS broadcasts the state-space representation of correction messages along with integrity messages regarding satellite faults and the quality index of each correction. In other GNSS augmentation systems, such as the space-based augmentation system (SBAS) of GNSS, the quality indices of correction messages are used to generate fault-free protection levels that represent a position bound containing a true user position with a probability of missed detections. Although the protection level equations are well defined for the SBAS, a protection level equation for the CLAS PPP-RTK service has not been rigorously discussed in the literature. This paper proposes a fault-free protection level equation for the PPP-RTK methods that considers the probability of correct integer ambiguity fixes in the GNSS carrier phase measurements as well as the CLAS correction quality messages. The computed protection levels with position errors were experimentally compared by processing the GNSS measurements from the GNSS Earth Observation Network (GEONET) stations in Japan and the L6 messages from the CLAS broadcast using the virtual reference station-real time kinematic (VRS-RTK) techniques. Our results, based on the GEONET dataset spanning 7 days, showed that the computed protection levels using the proposed equations were larger than the position errors for all epochs. In the dataset, the RMS errors of the CLAS VRS-RTK position were 4.6 and 14 cm in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively, whereas the horizontal protection levels ranged from 25 cm to 2.3 m and the vertical protection levels ranged from 50 cm to 5.2 m based on fault-free integrity risk of .

GNSS NLOS Signal Classification Based on Machine Learning and Pseudorange Residual Check.

Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning has recently garnered attention for autonomous driving, machine control, and construction sites. With the development of low-cost multi-GNSS receivers and the advent of new types of GNSS, such as Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System, the potential of GNSS positioning has increased. New types of GNSS directly increase the number of line-of-sight (LOS) signals in dense urban areas and improve positioning accuracy. However, GNSS receivers can observe both LOS and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) signals in dense urban areas, and more NLOS signals are observed under static conditions than under dynamic conditions. The classification of LOS and NLOS signals is important, and various methods have been proposed, such as C/N0, using three-dimensional maps, fish-eye view, and GNSS/inertial navigation system integration. Multipath detection based on machine learning has also been reported in recent years. In this study, we propose a method for detecting NLOS signals using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier modeled with unique features that are calculated by receiver independent exchange format-based information and GNSS pseudorange residual check. We found that using both the SVM classifier and GNSS pseudorange residual check effectively reduced the error due to NLOS signals. Several static tests were conducted near high-rise buildings that are likely to receive some NLOS signals in downtown Tokyo. For all static tests, the percentage of positioning errors within 10 m in the horizontal positioning error was improved by >80% by detecting and eliminating satellites receiving NLOS signals.

Simulation research on PPP-RTK performance based on BDS GEO satellite

Precise point positioning (PPP) is one of the seven planning public services of the new generation global Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), i.e. BDS-3. Up to now, the PPP service signal has already been broadcast through I channel of PPP-B2b to support decimeter level positioning within 30 min for users over China and the surrounding areas for free. Concerning the potential application of PPP real-time kinematic (PPP-RTK) in the BDS positioning service development, this paper carried out analysis and experiment of the design and evaluation of PPP-RTK through Q channel based on the existing PPP-B2b I channel signal. First, we presented the algorithm of PPP-RTK based on the undifferenced and uncombined model. Then, the format and broadcast strategy of phase delay and atmospheric delay products were discussed in detail. Finally, based on the simulation data, we analyzed the performance of PPP-RTK with different broadcast bandwidths. The results suggested that the positioning accuracy of GPS + BDS + Galileo PPP-RTK under 95% quantile were 2.3 cm and 3.3 cm in horizontal and vertical, respectively. In order to evaluate the BDS PPP-RTK service, we set the convergence thresholds as 6 cm in horizontal and 12 cm in vertical, which is given by Centimeter Level Augmentation Service of Japanese Quasi-Zenith Satellite System, and the time to converge to such thresholds were 0.5 min and 1.0 min in horizontal and vertical, respectively. Finally, the experiment considering ‘correction latency’ suggested that there was only a litter effect on the convergence speed, the positioning accuracy after convergence is roughly the same.

Atmospheric modes excited by the 2021 August eruption of the Fukutoku-Okanoba volcano, Izu\u2013Bonin Arc, observed as harmonic TEC oscillations by QZSS

Continuous Plinian eruptions of volcanoes often excite atmospheric resonant oscillations with several distinct periods of a few minutes. We detected such harmonic oscillations by the 2021 August eruption of the Fukutoku-Okanoba volcano, a submarine volcano in the Izu–Bonin arc, in ionospheric total electron content (TEC) observed from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations deployed on three nearby islands, Chichijima, Hahajima, and Iwojima. Continuous records with the geostationary satellite of Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) presented four frequency peaks of such atmospheric modes.
