Automated characterisation and operational insights of superconducting travelling wave parametric amplifiers: unveiling novel behaviours and enhancing tunability

Superconducting travelling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) exhibit great promise across various applications, owing to their broadband nature, quantum-limited noise performance, and high-gain operation. Whilst their construction is relatively simple, particularly for thin-film-based TWPAs, challenges such as the requirement for an extremely long transmission line, current fabrication limitations, and their sensitivity to fabrication tolerances, mean that their optimal operating conditions often differ from those anticipated during the design stage. As a result, manual fine-tuning of numerous operational parameters becomes necessary to recover optimal performance; a process that is both labour-intensive and time-consuming. This paper introduces an automated methodology designed to significantly accelerate the characterisation of a TWPA by several orders of magnitude without requiring human intervention. Additionally, we have developed metrics to condense the multitude of measured frequency responses of the TWPA, obtained in data cube form, into an easily-understandable format for further scientific interpretation. To demonstrate the efficacy and speed of our methodology, we utilise an existing NbTiN (niobium titanium nitride) TWPA as an example. This showcases the capability of our approach to unveil both broad- and fine-scale behaviours of the device, highlighting the importance of an automated experimental setup for the in-depth investigation of TWPAs for future developments.

A 4–8 GHz kinetic inductance traveling-wave parametric amplifier using four-wave mixing with near quantum-limited noise performance

Kinetic inductance traveling-wave parametric amplifiers (KI-TWPAs) have a wide instantaneous bandwidth with a near quantum-limited noise performance and a relatively high dynamic range. Because of this, they are suitable readout devices for cryogenic detectors and superconducting qubits and have a variety of applications in quantum sensing. This work discusses the design, fabrication, and performance of a KI-TWPA based on four-wave mixing in a NbTiN microstrip transmission line. This device amplifies a signal band from 4 to 8 GHz without contamination from image tones, which are produced in a separate higher frequency band. The 4–8 GHz band is commonly used to read out cryogenic detectors, such as microwave kinetic inductance detectors and Josephson junction-based qubits. We report a measured maximum gain of over 20 dB using four-wave mixing with a 1 dB gain compression point of −58 dBm at 15 dB of gain over that band. The bandwidth and peak gain are tunable by adjusting the pump-tone frequency and power. Using a Y-factor method, we measure an amplifier-added noise of 0.5 ≤ Nadded ≤ 1.5 photons from 4.5 to 8 GHz.

Fiber-interferometric second harmonic generator with dual-color standard quantum-limited noise performance.

We present a novel fiber-interferometric device that achieves dual functionality: simultaneous amplification of the pulsed input signal and generation of its second harmonic while effectively suppressing the intensity noise in both modes, reaching the standard quantum-limit. The underlaying mechanism is based on phase-biased nonlinear polarization rotation coupled with type-I phase-matched second harmonic generation, a concept that is both theoretically investigated and experimentally verified. In the experiment, a fiber-optic system is constructed capable of generating 42 MHz ultra-low noise sub-150 fs output pulse trains simultaneously at 1030 nm and 515 nm, with average powers of 165 mW and 50 mW, respectively. Systematic frequency-resolved intensity noise measurements confirm dual wavelength, quantum-limited noise suppression beyond 100 kHz offset-frequency, with suppression levels up to 14 dB, showing correlation with local maxima in average power in both fundamental and second harmonic mode.

Non-degenerate-pump four-wave mixing kinetic inductance travelling-wave parametric amplifiers

Kinetic inductance travelling-wave parametric amplifiers (KITWPAs) have been demonstrated to achieve high gain over broad bandwidths whilst achieving near quantum-limited noise performance, properties which are extremely important for many ultra-sensitive experiments. In early KITWPA designs, the requirement for phase-matching lead to the creation of a large zero-gain gap in the centre of the gain profile where the peak gain is, which also slightly narrows down the operational bandwidth of the device. This has been mitigated in more recent designs by introducing a DC bias to the KITWPA device, which allows the gap to be tuned away from the amplification band. However, the added DC biasing requires a more complicated experimental setup and potentially leads to unwanted heat leak in the cryogenic environment. Additionally, operation with a DC bias also become challenging at higher frequencies beyond the microwave regime. In this paper, we present the concept of a KITWPA operating in a non-degenerate-pump four-wave mixing (NP-4WM) regime, whereby the injection of two pump tones along with a weak signal results in a broad, flat gain profile that removes the zero-gain gap as well as eliminates the need for a DC bias and the complexities associated with it. We demonstrate how a NP-4WM KITWPA is feasible to achieve broadband amplification at a range of frequencies, first in the microwave range where most KITWPAs reported to-date have been successfully experimentally characterised. We then extend the designs to several millimetre (mm) bands to illustrate how we can use this technique to design a broadband front-end pre-amplifier that covers several Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) Bands.

Engineering the thin film characteristics for optimal performance of superconducting kinetic inductance amplifiers using a rigorous modelling technique.

Background: Kinetic Inductance Travelling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (KITWPAs) are a variant of superconducting amplifier that can potentially achieve high gain with quantum-limited noise performance over broad bandwidth, which is important for many ultra-sensitive experiments. In this paper, we present a novel modelling technique that can better capture the electromagnetic behaviour of a KITWPA without the translation symmetry assumption, allowing us to flexibly explore the use of more complex transmission line structures and better predict their performance. Methods: In order to design a KITWPA with optimal performance, we investigate the use of different superconducting thin film materials, and compare their pros and cons in forming a high-gain low-loss medium feasible for amplification. We establish that if the film thickness can be controlled precisely, the material used has less impact on the performance of the device, as long as it is topologically defect-free and operating within its superconducting regime. With this insight, we propose the use of Titanium Nitride (TiN) film for our KITWPA as its critical temperature can be easily altered to suit our applications. We further investigate the topological effect of different commonly used superconducting transmission line structures with the TiN film, including the effect of various non-conducting materials required to form the amplifier. Results: Both of these comprehensive studies led us to two configurations of the KITWPA: 1) A low-loss 100 nm thick TiN coplanar waveguide amplifier, and 2) A compact 50 nm TiN inverted microstrip amplifier. We utilise the novel modelling technique described in the first part of the paper to explore and investigate the optimal design and operational setup required to achieve high gain with the broadest bandwidth for both KITWPAs, including the effect of loss. Conclusions: Finally, we conclude the paper with the actual layout and the predicted gain-bandwidth product of our KITWPAs.

Wideband Direct Detection Constraints on Hidden Photon Dark Matter with the QUALIPHIDE Experiment.

We report direction detection constraints on the presence of hidden photon dark matter with masses between 20-30 μeV c^{-2}, using a cryogenic emitter-receiver-amplifier spectroscopy setup designed as the first iteration of QUALIPHIDE (quantum limited photons in the dark experiment). A metallic dish sources conversion photons, from hidden photon kinetic mixing, onto a horn antenna which is coupled to a C band kinetic inductance traveling wave parametric amplifier, providing for near quantum-limited noise performance. We demonstrate a first probing of the kinetic mixing parameter χ to the 10^{-12} level for the majority of hidden photon masses in this region. These results not only represent stringent constraints on new dark matter parameter space, but are also the first demonstrated use of wideband quantum-limited amplification for astroparticle applications.

Broadband SNAIL parametric amplifier with microstrip impedance transformer

Josephson parametric amplifiers are an important part of a modern superconducting quantum computing platform and squeezed quantum states generation devices. Traveling wave and impedance-matched parametric amplifiers provide broad bandwidth for high-fidelity single-shot readout of multiple qubit superconducting circuits. Here, we present a quantum-limited 3-wave-mixing parametric amplifier based on superconducting nonlinear asymmetric inductive elements (SNAILs), whose useful bandwidth is enhanced with an on-chip two-section impedance-matching circuit based on microstrip transmission lines. The amplifier dynamic range is increased using an array of 67 SNAILs with 268 Josephson junctions, forming a nonlinear quarter-wave resonator. Operating in a current-pumped mode, we experimentally demonstrate an average gain of 17 dB across 300 MHz bandwidth, along with an average saturation power of –100 dBm, which can go as high as −97 dBm with quantum-limited noise performance. Moreover, the amplifier can be fabricated using a simple technology with just one e-beam lithography step.

Parametric Amplifiers Based on Quantum Dots

Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) approaching quantum-limited noise performance have been instrumental in enabling high fidelity readout of superconducting qubits and, recently, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). We propose that the quantum capacitance arising in electronic two-level systems (the dual of Josephson inductance) can provide an alternative dissipationless nonlinear element for parametric amplification. We experimentally demonstrate phase-sensitive parametric amplification using a QD-reservoir electron transition in a CMOS nanowire split-gate transistor embedded in a 1.8GHz superconducting lumped-element microwave cavity, achieving parametric gains of -3 to +3 dB, limited by Sisyphus dissipation. Using a semiclassical model, we find an optimized design within current technological capabilities could achieve gains and bandwidths comparable to JPAs, while providing complementary specifications with respect to integration in semiconductor platforms or operation at higher magnetic fields.

Broadband flux-pumped Josephson parametric amplifier with an on-chip coplanar waveguide impedance transformer

The rapid progress towards scalable quantum processors demands amplifiers with large bandwidths and high saturation powers. For this purpose, we present a broadband flux-pumped Josephson parametric amplifier integrated with an on-chip coplanar waveguide impedance transformer. Our device can be fabricated with simple and straightforward photo-lithography. This device experimentally achieves an operational bandwidth over 600 MHz with a gain above 15 dB, and a high saturation power with quantum-limited noise performance. In addition, the center frequency of this device can be tuned over several hundred megahertz, which in turn broadens the effective operational bandwidth to around 1 GHz.

Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) with nearly quantum-limited noise performance have become indispensable devices for the measurements of superconducting quantum information. We have developed an all-Nb lumped-element flux-driven JPA operating in the three-wave mixing mode. Our Nb-based JPA comprises Nb/Al-AlO x /Nb Josephson junctions, a parallel-plate capacitor with SiO2 dielectric sandwiched between two Nb layers, a bottom coplanar waveguides layer, and a top Nb wiring layer. We experimentally demonstrate a 20 dB gain over a 190 MHz bandwidth, a mean 1 dB compression of –123 dBm, and near quantum-limited noise performance. This fabrication process can be further used to design impedance transformed parametric amplifiers for multiple-qubit readout.

Overlap junctions for superconducting quantum electronics and amplifiers

Due to their unique properties as lossless, nonlinear circuit elements, Josephson junctions lie at the heart of superconducting quantum information processing. Previously, we demonstrated a two-layer, submicrometer-scale overlap junction fabrication process suitable for qubits with long coherence times. Here, we extend the overlap junction fabrication process to micrometer-scale junctions. This allows us to fabricate other superconducting quantum devices. For example, we demonstrate an overlap junction-based Josephson parametric amplifier that uses only two layers. This efficient fabrication process yields frequency-tunable devices with negligible insertion loss, a gain of ∼30 dB, and quantum limited noise performance. Compared to other processes, the overlap junction allows for fabrication with minimal infrastructure, high yield, and state-of-the-art device performance.

Characterizing a novel scintillating glass for application to megavoltage cone-beam computed tomography.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a prototype electric portal imaging device (EPID) with a high detective quantum efficiency (DQE) scintillator, LKH-5. Specifically, image quality in context of both planar and megavoltage (MV) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is analyzed. Planar image quality in terms of modulation transfer function (MTF), noise power spectrum (NPS), and DQE are measured and compared to an existing EPID (AS-1200) using the 6MV beamline for a Varian TrueBeam linac. Imager performance is contextualized for three-dimensional (3D), MV-CBCT performance by measuring imager lag and analyzing the expected degradation of the DQE as a function of dose. Finally, comparisons between reconstructed images of the Catphan phantom in terms of qualitative quality and signal-difference-to-noise ratio (SDNR) are made for 6MV images using both conventional and LKH-5 EPIDs as well as for the kilovoltage (kV) on-board imager (OBI). Analysis of the NPS reveals linearity at all measured doses using the prototype LKH-5 detector. While the first zero of the MTF is much lower for the LKH-5 detector than the conventional EPID (0.6 cycles/mm vs 1.6 cycles/mm), the normalized NPS (NNPS) multiplied by total quanta (qNNPS) of the LKH-5 detector is roughly a factor of seven to eight times lower, yielding a DQE(0) of approximately 8%. First, second, and third frame lag were measured at approximately 23%, 5%, and 1%, respectively, although no noticeable image artifacts were apparent in reconstructed volumes. Analysis of low-dose performance reveals that DQE(0) remains at 80% of its maximum value at a dose as low as 7.5×10-6 MU. For a 400 projection technique, this represents a total scan dose of 0.0030MU, suggesting that if imaging doses are increased to a value typical of kV-CBCT scans (~2.7cGy), the LKH-5 detector will retain quantum noise limited performance. Finally, comparing Catphan scans, the prototype detector exhibits much lower image noise than the conventional EPID, resulting in improved small object representation. Furthermore, SDNR of H2 O and polystyrene cylinders improved from -1.95 and 2.94 to -15 and 18.7, respectively. Imaging performance of the prototype LKH-5 detector was measured and analyzed for both planar and 3D contexts. Improving noise transfer of the detector results in concurrent improvement of DQE(0). For 3D imaging, temporal characteristics were adequate for artifact-free performance and at relevant doses, the detector retained quantum noise limited performance. Although quantitative MTF measurements suggest poorer resolution, small object representation of the prototype imager is qualitatively improved over the conventional detector due to the measured reduction in noise.

Reverse Isolation and Backaction of the SLUG Microwave Amplifier

An ideal preamplifier for qubit measurement must not only provide high gain and near quantum-limited noise performance, but also isolate the delicate quantum circuit from noisy downstream measurement stages while producing negligible backaction. Here we use a Superconducting Low-inductance Undulatory Galvanometer (SLUG) microwave amplifier to read out a superconducting transmon qubit, and we characterize both reverse isolation and measurement backaction of the SLUG. For appropriate dc bias, the SLUG achieves reverse isolation that is better than that of a commercial cryogenic isolator. Moreover, SLUG backaction is dominated by thermal emission from dissipative elements in the device. When the SLUG is operated in pulsed mode, it is possible to characterize the transmon qubit using a measurement chain that is free from cryogenic isolators or circulators with no measurable degradation of qubit performance.

Hysteretic Flux Response and Nondegenerate Gain of Flux-Driven Josephson Parametric Amplifiers

For quantum information processing with superconducting circuits, efficient amplification of weak microwave signals is often required. For this purpose, Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) are commonly used, due to their quantum-limited noise performance. The authors show that flux-driven JPAs exhibit hysteresis, even for negligible screening parameters, and that their amplification properties depend strongly on the resonator characteristics. These phenomena are important for a full understanding of the magnetic field response and parametric amplification in JPAs, and thus their application.

Superconducting microwave parametric amplifier based on a quasi-fractal slow propagation line

Quantum limited amplifiers are sought after for a wide range of applications within quantum technologies and sensing. One promising candidate is the travelling wave parametric amplifier which exploits the non-linear kinetic inductance of a superconducting transmission line. This type of microwave amplifier promises to deliver a high gain, a quantum limited noise performance over several GHz bandwidth, and a high dynamic range. However, practical realizations of this type of device have so far been limited by fabrication defects, since the length of the superconducting transmission line required for achieving substantial parametric gain is on the order of ∼1 m. Here, we report on a design for a microwave traveling wave amplifier based on a slow propagation line comprising a central strip with high kinetic inductance and quasi-fractal line-to-ground capacitors. Due to an enhanced per unit length inductance (73 nH cm−1) and capacitance (15 pF cm−1), the line has a microwave propagation velocity as low as 9.8 × 108 cm s−1. This translates into parametric gain up to 0.5 dB cm−1 and a total gain of 6 dB for just a ∼10 cm long transmission line. Moreover, the flexibility of the presented design allows balancing the line inductance and capacitance in order to keep the characteristic impedance close to 50 Ω and to suppress standing waves, both factors being essential in order to implement a practical parametric amplifier in the microwave domain.

Characterization of a multimode coplanar waveguide parametric amplifier

We characterize a Josephson parametric amplifier based on a flux-tunable quarter-wavelength resonator. The fundamental resonance frequency is ∼1 GHz, but we use higher modes of the resonator for our measurements. An on-chip tuning line allows for magnetic flux pumping of the amplifier. We investigate and compare degenerate parametric amplification, involving a single mode, and nondegenerate parametric amplification, using a pair of modes. We show that we reach quantum-limited noise performance in both cases.

Characterization and analysis of timing jitter in normal-dispersion mode-locked Er-fiber lasers with intra-cavity filtering.

We characterize and analyze the timing jitter of normal-dispersion mode-locked Er-fiber lasers with intra-cavity filtering. The timing jitter of Er-fiber lasers with 9-nm bandpass filters operating at + 0.0084 ps(2) is measured to be 3.46 fs (rms) when integrated from 10 kHz to 10 MHz offset frequency, which is similar to the jitter level of typical stretched-pulse or soliton Er-fiber lasers. The numerical simulation based on split-step Fourier transform method shows that the measured high-frequency jitter is quantum noise-limited performance. We also develop an analytical model for filtered normal-dispersion fiber lasers by modifying the well-established noise model of stretched-pulse fiber lasers. The analytical modeling reveals that the jitter performance is improved mostly by reducing the chirp parameter by intra-cavity filtering. Both numerical simulation and analytical model fit fairly well with the measured timing jitter result.

Optical scatter of quantum noise filter cavity optics

Optical cavities to filter squeezed light for quantum noise reduction require optics with very low scattering losses. We report on measured light scattering from two super-polished fused silica optics before and after applying highly-reflective ion-beam sputtered dielectric coatings. We used an imaging scatterometer that illuminates the sample with a linearly polarized 1064 nm wavelength laser at a fixed angle of incidence and records images of back scatter for azimuthal angles in the plane of the laser beam. We extract from these images the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of the optics with and without coating and estimate their integrated scatter. We find that application of these coatings led to a more than 50% increase of the integrated wide-angle scatter, to and ppm for the two coated samples. In addition, the BRDF function of the coated optics takes on a pattern of maxima versus azimuthal angle. We compare with a scattering model to show that this is qualitatively consistent with roughness scattering from the coating layer interfaces. These results are part of a broader study to understand and minimize optical loss in quantum noise filter cavities for interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. The scattering measured for these samples is acceptable for the 16 m long filter cavities envisioned for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), though reducing the loss further would improve LIGO’s quantum-noise limited performance.

Development of solid-state avalanche amorphous selenium for medical imaging.

Active matrix flat panel imagers (AMFPI) have limited performance in low dose applications due to the electronic noise of the thin film transistor (TFT) array. A uniform layer of avalanche amorphous selenium (a-Se) called high gain avalanche rushing photoconductor (HARP) allows for signal amplification prior to readout from the TFT array, largely eliminating the effects of the electronic noise. The authors report preliminary avalanche gain measurements from the first HARP structure developed for direct deposition onto a TFT array. The HARP structure is fabricated on a glass substrate in the form of p-i-n, i.e., the electron blocking layer (p) followed by an intrinsic (i) a-Se layer and finally the hole blocking layer (n). All deposition procedures are scalable to large area detectors. Integrated charge is measured from pulsed optical excitation incident on the top electrode (as would in an indirect AMFPI) under continuous high voltage bias. Avalanche gain measurements were obtained from samples fabricated simultaneously at different locations in the evaporator to evaluate performance uniformity across large area. An avalanche gain of up to 80 was obtained, which showed field dependence consistent with previous measurements from n-i-p HARP structures established for vacuum tubes. Measurements from multiple samples demonstrate the spatial uniformity of performance using large area deposition methods. Finally, the results were highly reproducible during the time course of the entire study. We present promising avalanche gain measurement results from a novel HARP structure that can be deposited onto a TFT array. This is a crucial step toward the practical feasibility of AMFPI with avalanche gain, enabling quantum noise limited performance down to a single x-ray photon per pixel.
