High-performance CuInS2 quantum dot sensitized solar cells through I-/MPA dual-ligands passivation.

High-efficiency quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) can be received by increasing quantum dot (QD) loading and mitigating QD surface trap states. Herein, the surface state of CuInS2 QDs is optimized through an I-/MPA dual-ligands passivation strategy. The steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion between QDs can be effectively reduced, thereby enabling an increased QD loading capacity. Meanwhile, the I-/MPA dual-ligands passivation strategy can further lower the surface trap density, leading to substantially enhanced charge transfer efficiency of the solar cells. Interestingly, various iodized salts, including TBAI, MAI, and KI, are proved to possess comparable property, underscoring the versatility and broad applicability of this I-/MPA dual-ligands passivation strategy. Eventually, CuInS2 QDSSCs based on the NH4I/MPA dual-ligands exhibit a noteworthy enhancement in photovoltaic conversion efficiency, surpassing the benchmark of 5.71% to reach 7.03%.

Exchange of Thiol Ligands on CuInS2 Quantum Dots in High Boiling Solvents.

As-prepared quantum dots are covered with long-chain ligands to prevent aggregation. When quantum dots are used in optoelectronic devices such as solar cells and QD-LED, ligand exchange is necessary to replace long-chain ligands with short-chain ones to increase the efficiency of charge transfer from the quantum dots to the electrode. In this study, we successfully exchanged 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) ligands on CuInS2 quantum dots with mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) ligands by using a two-phase system of high-boiling hydrophilic and hydrophobic solvents. The ligand exchange to MPA was achieved by using diethylene glycol (DEG) or ethylene glycol (EG) as the hydrophilic phase and tetradecane as the hydrophobic phase. The ligand exchange rate increased with increasing ligand exchange temperature. When quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) were fabricated using the ligand-exchanged quantum dots, a positive correlation was observed between the progress of ligand exchange and short-circuit current density. This is because charge transfer efficiency from the quantum dots to the TiO2 electrode was improved by the ligand exchange. This work has shown that QDs synthesized using DDT can be applied to optoelectronic devices.

Design strategy of TiO2/AgInSe/CdS/CdSe/ZnS photoanode and optimization of CdSe nanoparticles layer for increasing the efficiency of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells

In this study, ternary AgInSe (AISe) quantum dots compound were synthesized using a novel chemical precipitation method followed by a controlled hydrothermal treatment. The as-prepared particles were deposited onto a mesoporous TiO2 substrate to be applied as the photoelectrode of quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). Two configurations of multilayer photoanodes i.e. the TiO2 NCs/AgInSe/CdS/ZnS and TiO2 NCs/AgInSe/CdS/CdSe/ZnS were fabricated and employed for higher photovoltaic performance. The co-sensitizing CdS and CdSe nanocrystals layers were synthesized and deposited through successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and chemical bath deposition (CBD) techniques, respectively. The results revealed that the QDSSCs with TiO2 NCs/AgInSe/ZnS photoanode initially showed an efficiency of 0.45 %. Incorporating CdS NCs as a quasi-shell film increased the efficiency to 3.9 % in the optimized TiO2/AgInSe/CdS(3 cycle)/ZnS configuration. Adding CdSe nanocrystals over-layer did not improve the efficiency of corresponding cells due to the increased thickness and resistance. Instead, the TiO2/AgInSe/CdS(2 cycle)/CdSe(12 min)/ZnS photoanode resulted in the efficiency of 4.10 % with 34 % improvement. Using the sub-micron size TiO2 hollow spheres (HSs) as the light scattering layer created further light absorption and enhanced performance. It was shown that the photovoltaic parameters were increased to short circuit current density (Jsc) of 23.25 mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 512 mV and overall efficiency equal to 4.55 %

Nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon combined with carbon nanotubes as counter electrode catalysts for quantum dot sensitized solar cells with record efficiency

The fabrication of a counter electrode possessing elevated catalytic efficiency and steadfast stability is a crucial prerequisite for the high-performance quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). Mesoporous carbon (MC) has been adopted as the desired CE material in the past years, but the disadvantage of its poor conductivity has limited further development of the performance of QDSCs. In this study, we present a straightforward approach for producing highly effective counter electrodes through the integration of nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (N-MC) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), forming a composite material that is deposited onto a titanium mesh substrate. The counter electrode (CE) based on composite materials shows excellent electrocatalytic performance, synergistically benefiting from large specific areas of N-MC and high conductivity of CNTs. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the optimal CEs exhibit excellent catalytic reduction activity as well as high electron mobility. Consequently, the corresponding QDSCs show a record power conversion efficiency of 16.68 %.

Constructing a stable and high-performance counter electrode for QDSSCs by modifying Co3S4 hollow nanocages with CuCo–B alloy-nanosheets

Counter electrode (CE) is a key part of enhancing power conversion efficiency (PCE) and strengthening cyclic stability in quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). Consequently, searching for alternative and high-quality CE materials has far-reaching consequences for extending the lifetime, increasing utilization and even further achieving commercialization of QDSSCs. Herein, we put forward an idea that the Co3S4 hollow nanocages were coated with CuCo–B alloy-nanosheets, and efficient Co3S4@CuCo–B composite CE was prepared by in-situ reduction method, and applied to QDSSCs. Because of its three-dimensional hollow structure, the Co3S4@CuCo–B composite has a higher specific surface area, encourages electrolyte diffusion, and enhances QDSSC stability. Alternatively, the work function analysis shows that Co3S4 modified by CuCo–B enhances the driving force of interfacial electric field and promotes electron transfer. The photovoltaic performance of QDSSC assembled with Co3S4@CuCo–B composite CE has demonstrated competitive ability via implementing a PCE up to 8.27 %, Jsc = 26.45 mA cm−2, Voc = 0.683 V and FF = 0.46. Among them, the PCE of Co3S4@CuCo–B composite CE respectively has ∼14.4 % and 29.6 % enhancements in comparison with pure CuCo–B and Co3S4 CEs. And Co3S4@CuCo–B composite CE displays stable current density after 200 cycle tests, demonstrating excellent cyclic stability. This work suggests that Co3S4@CuCo–B composite lays the theoretical foundation for becoming a high-performance CE.

Recent Progresses in Quantum‐Dot‐Sensitized Solar Cells: The Role of Counter Electrodes

Energy demand, global warming, environmental impacts, sustainability, and energy sources are some of the concerns faced by humanity. Quantum‐dot‐sensitized solar cells (QDSSC) are an alternative solution to addressing some of these issues, in addition to reducing the costs of producing electrical energy. However, QDSSCs present stability problems and low efficiency, less than 16%. In light of this challenge, this review aims to present the main strategies adopted to reduce energy losses that occur in each component of the solar cell, with a focus on one key component: the counter electrode (CE). The CE plays a crucial role in collecting electrons and regenerating the electrolyte, thus impacting the lifespan and efficiency of QDSSCs. As such, this review discusses the main advancements in CEs based on key materials such as metal sulfides, carbonaceous materials, and composites. The efforts related to the synthesis and application of different counter electrodes for QDSSCs are explored.

Improving the Conversion Ratio of QDSCs via the Passivation Effects of NiS.

To revolutionize the photochemical efficiency of quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) devices, herein, a passivation of the cells with multilayer material has been developed for heterojunctions TiO2/NiS/MnS/HI-30/Pt devices. In this study, NiS and MnS were deposited on a photoanode for the first time as passivated photon absorbers at room temperature. The adoption of NiS as a passisvative layer could tailor the active surface area and improve the photochemical properties of the newly modified cells. The vibrational shifts obtained from the Raman spectra imply that the energy change is influenced by the surface effect, giving rise to better electronic conductivity. The electrochemical stability and durability test for the N/M-3 device slows down and remains at 8.88% of its initial current after 3500 s, as compared to the N/M-1 device at 7.20%. The disparity in charge recombination implies that both the outer and inner parts of the nanoporous material are involved in the photogeneration reaction. The hybridized N/M-3 cell device reveals the highest current density with a low potential onset, indicating that power conversion occurs more easily because photons tend to be adsorbed easily on the surface of the MnS. The Nyquist plot for N/M-1 and N/M-3 promotes the faster transport of electrolytic ions across the TiO2/NiS/MnS, providing a good interaction for the electrolyte. The I-J Value of 9.94% shows that the passivation with the NiS layer promotes electron transport and enhances the performance of the modified cells. The passivation of the TiO2 layer with NiS attains a better power conversion efficiency among the scant studies so far on the surface passivation of QDSCs.

Formation of a potential barrier by a ZnSXSe1−X electron-blocking layer to improve the efficiency of CdSe0.3S0.7/CdSe quantum dot sensitized solar cells

We designed and fabricated multilayer quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) with TiO2 NPs/CdSe0.3S0.7/CdSe/ZnSXSe1−X, X = S/S + Se = 0, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, and 1 photoelectrodes to achieve optimum power conversion efficiency (PCE). In the corresponding structure, incoming light is absorbed by the CdSe0.3S0.7 and CdSe quantum dots (QDs), while the ZnSXSe1−X QDs act as an electron blocking layer or passivation layer, forming an energy barrier that restricts electron mobility from the light absorbers to the polysulfide electrolyte. The beneficial effect of the alloyed ZnSXSe1−X layer is the adjustability of its nanoparticle size/bandgap energy proportional to variations in the concentration of anionic precursors X, according to optical results. The PCE value of the reference cell with the TiO2 NPs/CdSe0.3S0.7/CdSe photoanode is 4.15 %. Following the coating of ZnSe, ZnS0.7Se0.3, ZnS0.8Se0.2, ZnS0.9Se0.1, and ZnS QDs via two successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) cycles (2Sc) on the CdSe0.3S0.7/CdSe co-sensitized photoelectrode increasing stability and improving the PCE value to 4.9 %, 5.40 %, 5.70, 5.25 %, and 5.05 %, respectively. Next, by modifying the thickness of the champion cell's passivation layer, the QDSCs with TiO2 NPs/CdSe0.3S0.7/CdSe/ZnS0.8Se0.2 (3Sc) photoelectrode exhibit maximum photovoltaic performance parameters of short circuit current density (JSC) = 26.25 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage (VOC) = 560 mV, fill factor (FF) = 0.42 % and PCE = 6.15 %. This improvement in performance is the result of decreased internal energy loss and recombination of charge carriers at the interface between the electrolyte and photoelectrode, which increases electron collection efficiency and electron injection efficiency in the visible region according to the external and internal quantum efficiency curves.

A review of the emerging technologies in solar cells: Dye-sensitized solar cells and quantum dot-sensitized solar cells

In the current energy crisis, more efficient and clean energy sources are needed to help move the primary energy source away from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and are shown to be unsustainable. Efforts have been made in many fields surrounding renewable energy sources, with wind power, hydropower, and nuclear power being the well-known ones. Solar power is another field that has shown tremendous promise in being a clean, renewable energy source. Dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) and quantum dot-sensitized solar cells(QDSSCs) have significantly advanced over the past 30 years. They are showing great potential as the production cost for DSSCs drops and the efficiency of QDSSCs rises with every passing year. This article shows the primary working mechanism of the two solar cells, compares them, and discusses their prospect of them.

Effect of hydrothermal time on catalyst activity of counter electrode Cu2S-rGO composite to enhance the efficiency of quantum dot solar cells

In this study, a high-efficiency reduced graphene oxide and Cu2S composite counter electrode for quantum dot-sensitized solar cells is investigated via various hydrothermal times (12, 24, and 36 h). Besides, for comparison, Cu2S CE was fabricated by hydrothermal and chemical bath deposition methods. The morphology of the nanocomposites was studied using a field emission scanning electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It confirms the formation of nanoflower-like Cu2S intermixed with rGO sheets. The presence of Cu2S and rGO in rGO/Cu2S composites was identified by X-ray diffraction, selected area electron diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectra. The chemical composition and purity of rGO/Cu2S were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical property of the as-fabricated counter electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry analysis using the sulfide/polysulfide-based electrolyte. The optimum hydrothermal time was 24 h. The power conversion efficiency of 5.187 % for rGO/Cu2S 24-h counter electrode is higher than that of reduced graphene oxide (4.013 %), synthesized chemical bath deposition (3.466 %), and hydrothermal Cu2S (3.112 %) counter electrodes, respectively. The main reason is the Cu2S nanoflower morphology and the conductive reduced graphene oxide network, which provide more catalytically active sites and a rapid electron transport pathway. Overall, the ease of synthesis, low cost, time efficiency, and excellent electrocatalytic characteristics of the rGO/Cu2S composites demonstrated a promising counter electrode.

Interfacial Mass Diagnostics: Quantitative Perspective on Construction and Mechanism Understanding of Dye-Sensitized, Perovskite and Quantum Dots Solar Cells.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted wide attention. DSSCs, QDSSCs and PSCs can be prepared by liquid phase or solid phase, which causes a certain range of interface micro-mass changes during preparation. In addition, the photoelectric conversion process occurring inside the device also inevitably causes interface micro-mass changes. Interpretation of these interface micro-mass changes can help to optimize the cell structure, improve the stability and performance repeatability of the device, as well as directly or indirectly infer, track and predict the internal photoelectric conversion mechanism of the device. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is a powerful tool for studying surface mass changes, extending this technology to the fields of solar cells to directly obtain interface micro-mass changes, which makes the research more in-depth and opens up a new perspective for explaining the basic principles of solar cells. This review summarizes the research progress of QCM application in DSSCs, QDSSCs and PSCs in recent years, and explores the challenges and new opportunities of QCM application in new solar cells in the future.

A comparative analysis of solid-state quantum dot-sensitized solar cells employing various hole transport layers, metal contacts, and a sensitizer comprising PbS/CdS/ZnS quantum dots

Quantum dots, as a sensitizer in quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), hold the promise of revolutionizing solar energy conversion. This research mainly focuses on employing PbS/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as both light harvesters and passivation layers in QDSSCs, which are directly synthesized onto the pre-deposited TiO2 substrate through the Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) technique. Particularly, the sample with a composition of 2 cycles of PbS, 6 cycles of CdS, and 2 cycles of ZnS (2/6/2) exhibited a wide-ranging and intense absorption spectrum, attributed to the reduction in band gap with escalation in number of SILAR cycles. The prepared samples underwent analysis through characterization methods, including SEM and XRD, and the elemental composition was examined using EDX spectroscopy. Subsequently, the 2/6/2 sample was employed as a sensitizer, with P3HT and PEDOT:PSS serving as the hole transport layers (HTL). For the metal contacts, thermally evaporated gold (Au), silver (Ag), and Ag paste were used in the fabrication of six distinct devices. FTO/TiO2/PbS/CdS/ZnS/P3HT/Au shows the best performance demonstrating PCE of 2.17 %, Jsc of 7.9 mA/cm2 Voc of 0.54 V and FF of 0.51. However, overall efficiency dropped significantly for other configurations. Additionally, impedance spectroscopic analysis revealed a notably low series resistance for the P3HT/Au configuration.

Zn-doped CdSSe composite quantum dots synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal ion exchange in sensitized solar cells

Metal ion doping is an effective strategy for enhancing the photoelectric properties of quantum dots (QDs). In this study, Zn-doped CdSSe composite QDs (ZnCdSSe) were synthesized using a two-step hydrothermal ion exchange method. The synthesis process involved the exchange reaction of Cd2+ with Zn2+, followed by the exchange reaction of Se2− with S2−, based on ZnS templates. The morphology, composition and crystalline phase of synthesized QDs were characterized using X-ray and electron-based techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS. The results indicate ZnCdSSe QDs were synthesized while preserving a similar morphology to that of ZnCdS. Performance tests demonstrated that quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) equipped with ZnCdSSe/TiO2 photoanodes achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.61% by optimizing the hydrothermal reaction temperature and time. This efficiency was 33.2% higher than that of CdSSe (2.17%) QDSSCs synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal exchange reaction using CdS templates. The significant enhancement in PCE can be attributed to improvements in light absorption and charge carrier transport. Notably, Zn doping reduced interface charge recombination and prolong electronic lifetime (τn), facilitating more effective charge collection in QDSSCs.

The Role of PbCoS Quantum Dots in Improved Photovoltaic Efficiency

<p>The quest for efficient, sustainable solar energy solutions has propelled the exploration of novel materials with enhanced photovoltaic properties. This study delves into the synthesis, characterization, and photovoltaic application of cobalt-doped lead sulfide (PbCoS) quantum dots (QDs) deposited on titanium dioxide (TiO2) substrates. Employing a hot-injection method, we synthesized PbCoS QDs and characterized their structural, compositional, and optical properties using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. The QDs demonstrated a cubic crystal structure with an average size of 20.12 nm and exhibited a direct band gap of 1.91 eV, indicative of quantum confinement effects and improved absorption in the visible spectrum. The photovoltaic performance of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) incorporating PbCoS QDs was assessed through current density-voltage (J-V) measurements, revealing a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.17%. This efficiency highlights the potential of PbCoS QDs to enhance the performance of QDSSCs, partly attributed to the impact of cobalt doping on the electronic structure and photovoltaic properties of the material. The study identifies gaps in current research, such as the optimization of cobalt doping levels and the exploration of interface engineering between QDs and substrates, pointing towards future directions for enhancing the efficiency and applicability of PbCoS-based photovoltaic devices.</p>

Biosynthesis of Cu-In-S Nanoparticles by a Yeast Isolated from Union Glacier, Antarctica: A Platform for Enhanced Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cells.

In recent years, the utilization of extremophile microorganisms for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, featuring enhanced properties and diverse compositions, has emerged as a sustainable strategy to generate high-quality nanomaterials with unique characteristics. Our study focuses on the biosynthesis of Cu-In-S (CIS) nanoparticles, which has garnered considerable attention in the past decade due to their low toxicity and versatile applications in biomedicine and solar cells. Despite this interest, there is a notable absence of reports on biological methods for CIS nanoparticle synthesis. In this research, three yeast species were isolated from soil samples in an extreme Antarctic environment-Union Glacier, Ellsworth Mountains. Among these isolates, Filobasidium stepposum demonstrated the capability to biosynthesize CIS nanoparticles when exposed to copper sulfate, indium chloride, glutathione, and cysteine. Subsequent purification and spectroscopic characterization confirmed the presence of characteristic absorbance and fluorescence peaks for CIS nanoparticles at 500 and 650 nm, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed the synthesis of monodisperse nanoparticles with a size range of 3-5 nm. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the composition of the nanoparticles, revealing the presence of copper, indium, and sulfur. The copper/indium ratio ranged from 0.15 to 0.27, depending on the reaction time. The biosynthesized CIS nanoparticles showed higher photostability than biomimetic nanoparticles and demonstrated successful application as photosensitizers in quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSC), achieving a conversion efficiency of up to 0.0247%. In summary, this work presents a cost-effective, straightforward, and environmentally friendly method for CIS nanoparticle synthesis. Furthermore, it constitutes the first documented instance of a biological procedure for producing these nanoparticles, opening avenues for the development of environmentally sustainable solar cells.

CdS/CdSe/PbS quantum dots sensitized TiO2 eggshell hollow microspheres photoanode to boost photocurrent and power conversion efficiency of QDSSC

Light harvesting plays crucial role for high photovoltaic performance of quantum dots sensitized solar cell (QDSSC). However, there are still issues need to be tackled, such as enlarging light response range and enhancing light scattering capability. In this work, TiO2 eggshell hollow microspheres (EHMS) were synthesized by carbonaceous microspheres (CMS) template method and co-sensitized by CdS/CdSe/PbS quantum dots (QDs) for application in QDSSC. Compared with QDSSC based on TiO2 nanoparticles (NP) and TiO2 hollow microspheres (HMS), the TiO2 EHMS based QDSSC showed a remarkable increase of short-circuit current density (Jsc) to 24.81 mA cm−2 with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.07 %. Photoelectrochemical analysis of QDSSC indicate that CdS/CdSe/PbS QDs can enlarge the light response range, and the TiO2 EHMS improve the light scattering, leading to the improvement of light harvesting efficiency. Charges dynamics tests results proved that a larger charges recombination resistance at photoanode/electrolyte interface and longer electron lifetime can be achieved with TiO2 EHMS, contributing to the boost of Jsc. The presented study introduces a simple strategy for researchers interested in designing photoanode for various photoelectrochemical applications.

Highly Efficient CdSe Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cells via a Facile SILAR Method: Dependence of the SILAR Cycles on Optical Properties and Photovoltaic Performance

This work emphasizes using CdSe as a sensitizer in quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) due to its beneficial band alignment with TiO2, enhancing effective charge injection. This study presents highly efficient CdSe QDSSCs developed using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The XRD analysis revealed a hexagonal crystal structure for the synthesized CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with an average particle size of 9.2 nm. Increasing the SILAR cycles from 3 to 5 showed a decrease in the energy bandgap, reducing it from 1.79 eV to 1.68 eV, as observed in the investigation of optical properties. The optimal photovoltaic performance of CdSe QDSSCs was achieved at 4 SILAR cycles, yielding a notable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.77% (Jsc = 14.63 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.71 V, FF = 65.2%), which is higher than that of a previous report of SILAR-prepared CdSe QDSSCs.
