The Biomechanics of Musculoskeletal Tissues during Activities of Daily Living: Dynamic Assessment Using Quantitative Transmission-Mode Ultrasound Techniques.

The measurement of musculoskeletal tissue properties and loading patterns during physical activity is important for understanding the adaptation mechanisms of tissues such as bone, tendon, and muscle tissues, particularly with injury and repair. Although the properties and loading of these connective tissues have been quantified using direct measurement techniques, these methods are highly invasive and often prevent or interfere with normal activity patterns. Indirect biomechanical methods, such as estimates based on electromyography, ultrasound, and inverse dynamics, are used more widely but are known to yield different parameter values than direct measurements. Through a series of literature searches of electronic databases, including Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and IEEE Explore, this paper reviews current methods used for the in vivo measurement of human musculoskeletal tissue and describes the operating principals, application, and emerging research findings gained from the use of quantitative transmission-mode ultrasound measurement techniques to non-invasively characterize human bone, tendon, and muscle properties at rest and during activities of daily living. In contrast to standard ultrasound imaging approaches, these techniques assess the interaction between ultrasound compression waves and connective tissues to provide quantifiable parameters associated with the structure, instantaneous elastic modulus, and density of tissues. By taking advantage of the physical relationship between the axial velocity of ultrasound compression waves and the instantaneous modulus of the propagation material, these techniques can also be used to estimate the in vivo loading environment of relatively superficial soft connective tissues during sports and activities of daily living. This paper highlights key findings from clinical studies in which quantitative transmission-mode ultrasound has been used to measure the properties and loading of bone, tendon, and muscle tissue during common physical activities in healthy and pathological populations.

Methodology exploration and reproducibility evaluation of TAI and TSI for quantitative ultrasound assessment of hepatic steatosis

Background and aimNew quantitative ultrasound techniques can be used to quantify hepatic steatosis, including tissue attenuation imaging (TAI), tissue scatter -distribution imaging (TSI), and the hepatorenal index (HRI). However, the measurement norms and the effects of fasting on these measurements remain unclear. The present study performed a methodological exploration and investigated the reliability of these measurements. MethodsIn total, 103 participants were prospectively recruited for ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. For the TAI and TSI data, the upper (2 cm), middle (4 cm) and lower (6 cm) areas determined according to the depth of the region of interest from the liver capsule, were sampled three times. Correlation analyses were performed to compare the measurements of TAI, TSI, and HRI with the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) or MRI-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF). Intra- and inter-operator repeatability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients. The effects of fasting on these measurements were then compared. ResultsThe TAI and TSI measurements obtained from the upper and middle depths exhibited stronger correlations with the CAP measurements than those obtained from the lower depth. Specifically, the mean TAI had a significant positive correlation with MRI-PDFF (r = 0.753, P < 0.0001). TAI and TSI measurements exhibited excellent intra- (0.933 and 0.925, respectively) and inter- (0.896 and 0.766, respectively) examiner reliability. However, the correlation between HRI and CAP measurements was only 0.281, with no significant correlation with MRI-PDFF, and intra- and inter-examiner reproducibility of 0.458 and 0.343, respectively. Fasting did not affect these measurements. ConclusionsTAI and TSI measurements demonstrated good intra- and interobserver reliability and correlated well with CAP and MRI-PDFF measurements. However, in practice-based clinical applications, the sampling depth should be controlled within 2–4 cm of the hepatic capsule; no fasting is required before the examination.

Multimodality quantitative ultrasound envelope statistics imaging based support vector machines for characterizing tissue scatterer distribution patterns: Methods and application in detecting microwave-induced thermal lesions

Ultrasound envelope statistics imaging, including ultrasound Nakagami imaging, homodyned-K imaging, and information entropy imaging, is an important group of quantitative ultrasound techniques for characterizing tissue scatterer distribution patterns, such as scatterer concentrations and arrangements. In this study, we proposed a machine learning approach to integrate the strength of multimodality quantitative ultrasound envelope statistics imaging techniques and applied it to detecting microwave ablation induced thermal lesions in porcine liver ex vivo. The quantitative ultrasound parameters included were homodyned-K α which is a scatterer clustering parameter related to the effective scatterer number per resolution cell, Nakagami m which is a shape parameter of the envelope probability density function, and Shannon entropy which is a measure of signal uncertainty or complexity. Specifically, the homodyned-K log10(α), Nakagami-m, and horizontally normalized Shannon entropy parameters were combined as input features to train a support vector machine (SVM) model to classify thermal lesions with higher scatterer concentrations from normal tissues with lower scatterer concentrations. Through heterogeneous phantom simulations based on Field II, the proposed SVM model showed a classification accuracy above 0.90; the area accuracy and Dice score of higher-scatterer-concentration zone identification exceeded 83% and 0.86, respectively, with the Hausdorff distance <26. Microwave ablation experiments of porcine liver ex vivo at 60–80 W, 1–3 min showed that the SVM model achieved a classification accuracy of 0.85; compared with single log10(α),m, or hNSE parametric imaging, the SVM model achieved the highest area accuracy (89.1%) and Dice score (0.77) as well as the smallest Hausdorff distance (46.38) of coagulation zone identification. We concluded that the proposed multimodality quantitative ultrasound envelope statistics imaging based SVM approach can enhance the capability to characterize tissue scatterer distribution patterns and has the potential to detect the thermal lesions induced by microwave ablation.

Quantitative ultrasound techniques and biochemical markers to assess liver steatosis and fibrosis in newly diagnosed acromegaly.

The liver is known to be protected from steatosis under the influence of high GH/IGF-1. Cytokeratin 18 (CK18) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) increase in liver steatosis and fibrosis. The aim of this study was to use quantitative ultrasound techniques and biochemical markers to assess liver steatosis and liver fibrosis in newly diagnosed acromegaly. This single-center, cross-sectional study included 23 patients with newly diagnosed acromegaly and 46 age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)-matched controls. Liver steatosis was assessed using tissue attenuation imaging (TAI), and stiffness, indicative of fibrosis, was assessed by shear wave elastography (SWE). Serum IGFBP7 and CK18 were studied by ELISA. The acromegaly group had significantly lower liver steatosis (p = 0.006) and higher liver stiffness (p = 0.004), serum IGFBP7 (p = 0.048) and CK18 (p = 0.005) levels than the control group. The presence of fibrosis (p = 0.012) was significantly higher in the acromegaly group than in the control group. Moreover, CK18 was positively correlated with liver stiffness, WC, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, and triglyceride. In the acromegaly group, liver steatosis was negatively correlated with GH level. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis revealed that BMI (p = 0.008) and CK18 (p = 0.015) were independent risk factors for increased liver stiffness. This study showed that there was an increased presence of liver fibrosis independent of liver steatosis in newly diagnosed acromegaly. Serum CK18 appears to be a potential marker of increased liver fibrosis in acromegaly.

Effects of Size Polydispersity and Dense Media on Quantitative Ultrasound Estimates.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques based on the backscatter coefficient (BSC) aim to characterize the scattering properties of biological tissues. A scattering model is fit to the measured BSC, and the fitted QUS parameters can provide local tissue microstructure, namely, scatterer size and acoustic concentration. However, these techniques may fail to provide a correct description of tissue microstructure when the medium is polydisperse and/or dense. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of scatterer size polydispersity in sparse or dense media on the QUS estimates. Four scattering models (i.e., the monodisperse and polydisperse sparse models, and the monodisperse and polydisperse concentrated models based on the structure factor) are compared to assess their accuracy and reliability in quantifying the QUS estimates. Simulations are conducted with different scatterer size distributions for sparse, moderately dense, and dense media (volume fractions of 1%, 20%, and 73%, respectively). The QUS parameters are estimated by using model-based inverse methods at different center frequencies between 8 and 50 MHz. Experimental data are also analyzed using colon adenocarcinoma HT29 cell pellet biophantoms to further validate the results obtained from simulations at the volume fraction of 73%. Our findings reveal that the choice of scattering model has a significant impact on the accuracy of QUS estimates. For sufficiently high frequencies and dense media, the polydisperse concentrated model outperforms the other models and enables more accurate quantification. Furthermore, our results contribute to advancing our understanding of the complexities associated with scatterer size polydispersity and dense media in spectral-based QUS techniques.

Dairy consumption, bone turnover biomarkers, and osteo sono assessment index in Japanese adults: A cross-sectional analysis of data from the Iwaki Health Promotion Project

PurposeDairy foods are nutritional sources of calcium, phosphorus, protein, and other nutrients that improve bone health. However, the effects of dairy consumption on bone biomarkers in the Japanese population remain unclear. This study explored the association between dairy consumption and bone biomarkers in Japanese adults. MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted as part of the Iwaki Health Promotion Project in Aomori, Japan. In total, 1063 adults were included in the analysis. Bone turnover marker levels were measured in local citizens during their annual medical checkups. The calcaneus osteo sono assessment index (OSI) was calculated using a quantitative ultrasound technique. The dietary intake of foods and nutrients was estimated using a food frequency questionnaire. Linear regression models were established using dairy consumption and bone biomarkers with adjustments. Statistic significance was considered by P < 0.05. ResultsIn multivariate models, the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b and parathyroid hormone concentrations were inversely associated with dietary dairy consumption after adjusting for age and sex. The undercarboxylated osteocalcin, a procollagen type I N-terminal peptide to bone alkaline phosphatase ratio, and OSI were the directly associated with dairy consumption in multivariate models with adjustment. ConclusionsDairy consumption is partially associated with bone turnover biomarkers and OSI in adult Japanese participants. Habitual consumption of dairy foods may contribute to the nutritional supplementation for maintaining bone health, including turnover and structure. Parametric imaging based on horizontally normalized weight-adjustable Shannon entropy for tissue characterization

Ultrasonic B-mode imaging provides real-time and non-invasive imaging for soft tissue diagnosis in clinical use, but its limited contrast leads to the challenge of detection accuracy. Quantitative ultrasound techniques have been proposed as a promising method for soft tissue characterization and reflecting the microstructure of lesions. This study proposed a novel entropy called horizontally normalized weight-adjustable Shannon entropy (hNWASE). An adjustable weight factor was added to this entropy, so that the entropy value can be changed and the imaging performance can be adjusted to lesions according to different positions and acoustic characteristics. The relationship between the adjustable parameter n and the imaging performance was explored. Moreover, the performance of the proposed hNWASE imaging was compared with weighted Shannon entropy (WSE) imaging, and horizontally normalized Shannon entropy (hNSE) imaging by both simulations and clinical data. hNSE imaging obtained a Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.68 ± 0.11 in the thyroid nodule diagnostic tests, which underestimated the periphery of the nodule. WSE imaging got the largest area difference of 3.70 ± 1.4 mm2 between the ground truth and predicted area, which indicated that the delineation of the nodule boundary by the WSE was too large. hNWASE imaging got superior lesion area prediction with the MCC of 0.81 ± 0.06, F1 score of 0.81 ± 0.07, and generalized contrast-to-noise ratio of 0.98 ± 0.03. These findings suggested that hNWASE imaging could improve image quality and be a promising technique for tissue characterization.

Can carbonation depth be measured in a nondestructive way? High-frequency quantitative ultrasound imaging for cement paste

Determining the carbonation depth is of paramount importance in assessing the durability of cementitious materials as the carbonation process alters their near-surface physicochemical properties. This paper introduces a novel quantitative ultrasound (QUS) technique capable of nondestructively identifying the carbonation depth, regardless of the tortuosity of the carbonation front. A 2.5 MHz phased array transducer was employed to construct beamformed radio frequency images and measure two microstructure-dependent parameters – spectral slope (SS) and spectral intercept (SI) – based on backscatter and attenuation coefficients. The change in obtained SS and SI were then visualized as QUS images, which displayed the geometry of the carbonation front, correlating with images constructed using a phenolphthalein solution (1.6 mm difference in depth). Mineral compositions and porosities were analyzed to account for microstructural changes in each layer. This study opens an opportunity for nondestructive detection of carbonation depth, overcoming the limitations in conventional methods or regression-based approaches.

Characterization of the invivo transient responses of the femoral cartilage by means of quantitative ultrasound imaging techniques.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques are new diagnostic tools able to identify changes in structural and material properties of the investigated tissue. For the first time, we evaluated the capability of QUS techniques in determining the invivo transient changes in knee joint cartilage after a stressful task. An ultrasound scanner collecting B-mode and radiofrequency data simultaneously was used to collect data from the femoral cartilage of the right knee in 15 participants. Cartilage thickness (CTK), ultrasound roughness index (URI), average magnitude ratio (AMR), and Nakagami parameters (NA) were evaluated before, immediately after and every 5 min up to 45 min a stressful task (30 min of running on a treadmill with a negative slope of 5%). CTK was affected by time (main effect: p < 0.001). Post hoc test showed significant differences with CTK at rest, which were observed up to 30 min after the run. AMR and NA were affected by time (p < 0.01 for both variables), while URI was unaffected by it. For AMR, post hoc test showed significant differences with rest values in the first 35 min of recovery, while NA was increased compared to rest values in all time points. Data suggest that a single running trial is not able to modify the integrity of the femoral cartilage, as reported by URI data. Invivo evaluation of QUS parameters of the femoral cartilage (NA, AMR, and URI) are able to characterize changes in cartilage properties over time.

Multiple ultrasonic parametric imaging for the detection and monitoring of high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation

Numerous quantitative ultrasound imaging techniques have demonstrated superior monitoring performance for thermal ablation when compared to conventional ultrasonic B-mode imaging. However, the absence of comparative studies involving various quantitative ultrasound imaging techniques hinders further clinical exploration. In this study, we simultaneously reconstructed ultrasonic Nakagami imaging, ultrasonic horizontally normalized Shannon entropy (hNSE) imaging, and ultrasonic differential attenuation coefficient intercept (DACI) imaging from ultrasound backscattered envelope data collected during high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation treatment. We comprehensively investigated their performance differences through qualitative and quantitative analyses, including the calculation of contrast-to-noise ratios (CNR) for ultrasonic images, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis with corresponding indicators, the analysis of lesion area fitting relationships, and computational time consumption comparison. The mean CNR of hNSE imaging was 10.98 ± 4.48 dB, significantly surpassing the 3.82 ± 1.40 dB (p < 0.001, statistically significant) of Nakagami imaging and the 2.45 ± 0.74 dB (p < 0.001, statistically significant) of DACI imaging. This substantial difference underscores that hNSE imaging offers the highest contrast resolution for lesion recognition. Furthermore, we evaluated the ability of multiple ultrasonic parametric imaging to detect thermal ablation lesions using ROC curves. The area under the curve (AUC) for hNSE was 0.874, exceeding the values of 0.848 for Nakagami imaging and 0.832 for DACI imaging. Additionally, hNSE imaging exhibited the strongest linear correlation coefficient (R = 0.92) in the comparison of lesion area fitting, outperforming Nakagami imaging (R = 0.87) and DACI imaging (R = 0.85). hNSE imaging also performs best in real-time monitoring with each frame taking 6.38 s among multiple ultrasonic parametric imaging. Our findings unequivocally demonstrate that hNSE imaging excels in monitoring HIFU ablation treatment and holds the greatest potential for further clinical exploration.

Spectral-based Quantitative Ultrasound Imaging Processing Techniques: Comparisons of RF Versus IQ Approaches.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is an imaging technique which includes spectral-based parameterization. Typical spectral-based parameters include the backscatter coefficient (BSC) and attenuation coefficient slope (ACS). Traditionally, spectral-based QUS relies on the radio frequency (RF) signal to calculate the spectral-based parameters. Many clinical and research scanners only provide the in-phase and quadrature (IQ) signal. To acquire the RF data, the common approach is to convert IQ signal back into RF signal via mixing with a carrier frequency. In this study, we hypothesize that the performance, that is, accuracy and precision, of spectral-based parameters calculated directly from IQ data is as good as or better than using converted RF data. To test this hypothesis, estimation of the BSC and ACS using RF and IQ data from software, physical phantoms and in vivo rabbit data were analyzed and compared. The results indicated that there were only small differences in estimates of the BSC between when using the original RF, the IQ derived from the original RF and the RF reconverted from the IQ, that is, root mean square errors (RMSEs) were less than 0.04. Furthermore, the structural similarity index measure (SSIM) was calculated for ACS maps with a value greater than 0.96 for maps created using the original RF, IQ data and reconverted RF. On the other hand, the processing time using the IQ data compared to RF data were substantially less, that is, reduced by more than a factor of two. Therefore, this study confirms two things: (1) there is no need to convert IQ data back to RF data for conducting spectral-based QUS analysis, because the conversion from IQ back into RF data can introduce artifacts. (2) For the implementation of real-time QUS, there is an advantage to convert the original RF data into IQ data to conduct spectral-based QUS analysis because IQ data-based QUS can improve processing speed.

Protocol of quantitative ultrasound techniques for noninvasive assessing of hepatic steatosis after bariatric surgery.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery can effectively improve steatosis, necroinflammatory activity, and hepatic fibrosis in individuals diagnosed with morbid obesity or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Common methods such as body mass index (BMI) to evaluate the postoperative effect of clinical bariatric surgery cannot differentiate subcutaneous fats from visceral fats and muscles. Several Quantitative ultrasound (QUS)-based approaches have been developed to quantify hepatic steatosis. QUS techniques (tissue attenuation imaging (TAI), tissue scatter distribution imaging (TSI)) from radio frequency (RF) data analysis as a means for the detection and grading of hepatic steatosis has been posited as an objective and noninvasive approach. The implementation and standardization of QUS techniques (TAI, TSI) in assessing hepatic steatosis quantitatively after bariatric surgery is of high-priority. Our study is aimed to assess hepatic steatosis with QUS techniques (TAI, TSI) in morbidly obese individuals before and after bariatric surgery, and to compare with anthropometric measurements, laboratory assessments and other imaging methods. The present investigation, a self-discipline examination of navigational capacity devoid of visual cues, is designed as a single-site, forward-looking evaluation of efficacy with the imprimatur of the institutional review board. The duration of the study has been provisionally determined to span from 1 January 2023 through 31 December 2025. Our cohort shall encompass one hundred participants, who was scheduled to undergo Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) at Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. All patients will undergo anthropometric measurements, blood-based biochemical analyses, ultrasonic examination and magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF). The primary endpoint is the analysis of evaluating the efficacy of QUS techniques assessing hepatic steatosis compared to other methods before and after bariatric surgery. Prior to the fomal study, we recruited 21 obese Chinese participants who received ultrasonic examination (TAI, TSI) and MRI-PDFF. AC-TAI showed moderate correlations with MRI-PDFF (adjusted r = 0.632; P < 0.05). For MRI-PDFF ≥10%, SC-TSI showed moderate correlations with MRI-PDFF (adjusted r = 0.677; P < 0.05). Our pre-experiment results signified that using QUS techniques for postoperative evaluation of bariatric surgery is promising. QUS techniques will be signed a widespread availability, real-time functionality, and low-cost approach for assessing hepatic steatosis before and after bariatric surgery in obese individuals, thus is capable for subsequent scale-up liver fat quantification. The present research endeavor has been bestowed with the imprimatur of the Ethics Committee of the Hospital, as indicated by its Approval Number: 2023-KY-015. In due course, upon completion of the study, we intend to disseminate our findings by publishing them in a suitable academic journal, thereby facilitating their widespread utilization. The trial is duly registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, and with a unique Trial Registration Number, ChiCTR2300069892, approved on March 28, 2023.

The role of shear wave elastography in predicting endometrial cancer in patients presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) is an objective quantitative ultrasound elastography technique that can demonstrate the stiffness of anatomical structures to aid in their detection and characterization. We aimed to evaluate the role of shear wave elastography in differentiating endometrial carcinoma from benign uterine pathologies in women with abnormal uterine bleeding. This prospective study was conducted at our institution from January 2020 to April 2020. A hundred patients with endometrial sampling planned and SWE due to abnormal uterine bleeding were included in the study. According to the histopathological results of the patients, those with normal and atrophic endometrium results were defined as group I (control group), those with benign results such as polyps and endometrial hyperplasia were defined as group II, and those with endometrial cancers were defined as group III. After adjustment for age, a statistically significant difference was found in Emean (mean and adjusted mean) value between the study groups (F2.96=86.37, p<.001, η2=0.64). The post-hoc analysis was performed with a Bonferroni adjustment. The mean Emean value was found to be statistically significantly higher in group III (17.14±0.40) compared to group I (10.39±0.26) and group II (11.49±0.32) (p<0.001). In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between the benign and normal groups. As a new diagnostic technique in gynecology, elastography appears to be a valuable tool in differentiating malign endometrial pathologies from normal or benign endometrial pathologies in females with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Identification of Myofascial Trigger Point Using the Combination of Texture Analysis in B-Mode Ultrasound with Machine Learning Classifiers.

Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder characterized by myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). Quantitative ultrasound (US) techniques can be used to discriminate MTrPs from healthy muscle. In this study, 90 B-mode US images of upper trapezius muscles were collected from 63 participants (left and/or right side(s)). Four texture feature approaches (individually and a combination of them) were employed that focused on identifying spots, and edges were used to explore the discrimination between the three groups: active MTrPs (n = 30), latent MTrPs (n = 30), and healthy muscle (n = 30). Machine learning (ML) and one-way analysis of variance were used to investigate the discrimination ability of the different approaches. Statistically significant results were seen in almost all examined features for each texture feature approach, but, in contrast, ML techniques struggled to produce robust discrimination. The ML techniques showed that two texture features (i.e., correlation and mean) within the combination of texture features were most important in classifying the three groups. This discrepancy between traditional statistical analysis and ML techniques prompts the need for further investigation of texture-based approaches in US for the discrimination of MTrPs.

Cancer characterization using light backscattering spectroscopy and quantitative ultrasound: an ex vivo study on sarcoma subtypes

Histological analysis is the gold standard method for cancer diagnosis. However, it is prone to subjectivity and sampling bias. In response to these limitations, we introduce a quantitative bimodal approach that aims to provide non-invasive guidance towards suspicious regions. Light backscattering spectroscopy and quantitative ultrasound techniques were combined to characterize two different bone tumor types from animal models: chondrosarcomas and osteosarcomas. Two different cell lines were used to induce osteosarcoma growth. Histological analyses were conducted to serve as references. Three ultrasound parameters and intensities of the light reflectance profiles showed significant differences between chondrosarcomas and osteosarcomas at the 5% level. Likewise, variations in the same biomarkers were reported for the two types of osteosarcoma, despite their similar morphology observed in the histological examinations. These observations show the sensitivity of our techniques in probing fine tissue properties. Secondly, the ultrasound spectral-based technique identified the mean size of chondrosarcoma cells and nuclei with relative errors of about 22% and 9% respectively. The optical equivalent technique correctly extracted scatterer size distributions that encompass nuclei and cells for chondrosarcomas and osteosarcomas (R^2 = 0.80 and R^2 = 0.73 respectively). The optical scattering contributions of nuclei were estimated at 52% for the chondrosarcomas and 69% for the osteosarcomas, probably indicating the abundant and the absent extracellular matrix respectively. Thus, the ultrasound and the optical methods brought complementary parameters. They successfully estimated morphological parameters at the cellular and the nuclear scales, making our bimodal technique promising for tumor characterization.

High-frequency point-of-care quantitative ultrasound to assess myopia-induced microstructural changes in the anterior sclera in vivo

The progression of myopia to advanced stages is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Standard ophthalmic measurements can evaluate myopia level but cannot predict disease progression. Recent evidence suggests the microstructural properties of the anterior sclera may be altered by myopia. We have developed a high-frequency (80MHz) point-of-care (POC) ultrasound device to collect radiofrequency echo data from the anterior sclera and infer the microstructural and mechanical properties using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques and passive elastography (PE), respectively. We hypothesized that QUS parameters derived from measurements of the backscatter coefficient (BSC) and shear-wave speed (SWS) estimated through PE correlate with myopia severity. Both eyes of 85 patients exhibiting varying levels of myopia were scanned with the POC device. Multilinear regression between the QUS parameters with refractive error or axial length demonstrated moderate correlation (p &amp;lt; 0.001). A logistic regression classifier trained using a subset of the QUS parameters to differentiate eyes based on myopia level achieved satisfactory performance as measured by area under the ROC curve (AUROC = 0.7). Results of this study suggest high-frequency QUS can detect myopia-induced microstructural changes of the anterior sclera and may pave the way toward a method to predict myopia progression in vivo.

Assessment of glycerol in biodiesel using an ultrasonic measurement method

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel, biodegradable and alternative to diesel oil consisting chemically of fatty acid alkyl esters and obtained by the transesterification reaction. After transesterification, undesirable components may remain in biodiesel. The presence of these components negatively influences the properties and performance of biodiesel. This research aims to evaluate biodiesel quality, using the quantitative ultrasound technique to determine the presence of the contaminant glycerol in biodiesel samples. The blends used in this study consisted of biodiesel and glycerol varying from 0 % to 0.5 % of glycerol by mass. The measurement uncertainty was evaluated according to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. The speed of sound in biodiesel/glycerol blends was measured by the pulse-echo technique (@ 5 MHz) and was considered equivalent for the different concentrations studied. The maximum measurement uncertainty obtained was 2.2 m·s−1 (0.16 %).

Quantitative ultrasound techniques for assessing thermal ablation: Measurement of the backscatter coefficient from ex vivo human liver.

Understanding the changes occurring in biological tissue during thermal ablation is at the heart of many current challenges in both therapy and medical imagingresearch. The objective of this work is to quantitatively interpret the scattering response of human liver samples, before and after thermal ablation. We report acoustic measurements performed involving n = 21 human liver samples. Thermal ablation is achieved at temperatures between 45 and 80°C and quantification of the irreversible changes in acoustic attenuation and Backscattering Coefficient (BSC) is reported, with a particular attention to thelatter. Both attenuation coefficient and BSCs were measured in the frequency range from 10 to 52 MHz. Scans were performed before heating and after cooling down. Attenuation coefficients were calculated using spectral difference method and BSC estimated using the reference phantommethod. Strong increases of attenuation coefficients and BSCs with heating temperature were observed. Quantitative ultrasonic parameters obtained with the polydisperse structure factor model (poly-SFM)are compared to histological observations and seen to be close to hepatocyte mean diameter (HMD). The results presented in this study provide a description of the impact of thermal ablation in human liver tissue on acoustic attenuation and the BSC. For the first time, quantitative agreement between the Effective Scatterer Diameter (ESD) estimated from BSC and HMD was shown, highlighting the important role of cellular network in the scattering response of the medium. This core result is an important step toward the determination of the nature of scattering sources in biologicaltissues.

Custom-made flow phantoms for quantitative ultrasound microvessel imaging

Morphologically realistic flow phantoms are essential experimental tools for quantitative ultrasound-based microvessel imaging. As new quantitative flow imaging tools are developed, the need for more complex vessel-mimicking phantoms is indisputable. In this article, we propose a method for fabricating phantoms with sub-millimeter channels consisting of branches and curvatures in various shapes and sizes suitable for quantifying vessel morphological features. We used different tissue-mimicking materials (TMMs) compatible with ultrasound imaging as the base and metal wires of different diameters (0.15–1.25 mm) to create wall-less channels. The TMMs used are silicone rubber, plastisol, conventional gelatin, and medical gelatin. Mother channels in these phantoms were made in diameters of 1.25 mm or 0.3 mm and the daughter channels in diameters 0.3 mm or 0.15 mm. Bifurcations were created by soldering wires together at branch points. Quantitative parameters were assessed, and accuracy of measurements from the ground truth were determined. Channel diameters were seen to have increased (76–270%) compared to the initial state in the power Doppler images, partly due to blood mimicking fluid pressure. Amongst the microflow phantoms made from the different TMMs, the medical gelatin phantom was selected as the best option for microflow imaging, fulfilling the objective of being easy to fabricate with high transmittance while having a speed of sound and acoustic attenuation close to human tissue. A flow velocity of 0.85 ± 0.01 mm/s, comparable to physiological flow velocity was observed in the smallest diameter phantom (medical gelatin branch) presented here. We successfully constructed more complex geometries, including tortuous and multibranch channels using the medical gelatin as the TMM. We anticipate this will create new avenues for validating quantitative ultrasound microvessel imaging techniques.

Skeletal Muscle Assessment Using Quantitative Ultrasound: A Narrative Review.

Ultrasound (US) is an important imaging tool for skeletal muscle analysis. The advantages of US include point-of-care access, real-time imaging, cost-effectiveness, and absence of ionizing radiation. However, US can be highly dependent on the operator and/or US system, and a portion of the potentially useful information carried by raw sonographic data is discarded in image formation for routine qualitative US. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) methods provide analysis of the raw or post-processed data, revealing additional information about normal tissue structure and disease status. There are four QUS categories that can be used on muscle and are important to review. First, quantitative data derived from B-mode images can help determine the macrostructural anatomy and microstructural morphology of muscle tissues. Second, US elastography can provide information about muscle elasticity or stiffness through strain elastography or shear wave elastography (SWE). Strain elastography measures the induced tissue strain caused either by internal or external compression by tracking tissue displacement with detectable speckle in B-mode images of the examined tissue. SWE measures the speed of induced shear waves traveling through the tissue to estimate the tissue elasticity. These shear waves may be produced using external mechanical vibrations or internal "push pulse" ultrasound stimuli. Third, raw radiofrequency signal analyses provide estimates of fundamental tissue parameters, such as the speed of sound, attenuation coefficient, and backscatter coefficient, which correspond to information about muscle tissue microstructure and composition. Lastly, envelope statistical analyses apply various probability distributions to estimate the number density of scatterers and quantify coherent to incoherent signals, thus providing information about microstructural properties of muscle tissue. This review will examine these QUS techniques, published results on QUS evaluation of skeletal muscles, and the strengths and limitations of QUS in skeletal muscle analysis.
