Choosing Qualitative Data Analysis Software: Atlas/ti and Nudist Compared

Choosing between Nudist and Atlas/ti, the main qualitative data analysis software packages can be difficult. To assist researchers in making this choice, I have conceptualised their differences along two dimensions, related to the qualities of the software and of the research project. The software dimension is structural design, and the project dimension is complexity. Software structure is dichotomised between structured, sequential, verbal versus visual, spatial, interconnected modes of operation. Projects are dichotomised between homogeneous sample, short timeframe, single data-type, single data analyst; versus multiple samples, longitudinal data, multiple data types and team data analysis. First I review the CAQDAS literature. Then I outline the different personalities and strengths of Atlas/ti and Nudist, and show how they match these dimensions. I offer suggestions as to how to choose, and whether to use in tandem with complementary conceptual network software.

The Creation of Theory: A Recent Application of the Grounded Theory Method

This paper outlines a particular approach to building theory that was employed in a recent doctoral research project (Pandit, 1995). Three aspects used in conjunction indicate the project's novelty: firstly, the systematic and rigorous application of the grounded theory method; secondly, the use of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data; and, thirdly, the use of a qualitative data analysis software package to aid the process of grounded theory building.

Researchers on the pier: Academics’ use of a local internet gateway

This paper describes the establishment of an Internet gateway local to the University of Sussex, firstly as a Gopher and more recently as a World Wide Web server. There follows an account of a project currently underway to assess the practical value of Internet resources to research and the consequential training and support requirements. This assessment is planned to determine the value of a local gateway to academic researchers at Sussex and the roles specific to a local gateway that such comprehensive resources as Yahoo and BUBL cannot fulfil. The project is using an interview‐based methodology to gain an understanding of researchers’ views of Internet resource provision, and these interviews are being analysed with the help of the NUD*IST qualitative data analysis software package. The account is of research in progress, and hence does not conclude with the set of pragmatic policy proposals that forms its key objective. Instead, some indication is given of the broad early findings of the project
