“I didn't know what to expect or What to do”: Impacts of a severe winter storm on residents of subsidized housing in Texas

Residents of public or subsidized housing experience social and environmental disadvantages and are therefore particularly vulnerable to disasters. Although research has highlighted risks associated with common disasters, such as floods and heatwaves, to date little is known about the impacts of infrequent disasters, such as a winter storm in a subtropical climate with mild winter weather. Even less is known about factors related to disaster preparation by and coping strategies of these disadvantaged residents. The present study aimed to examine the impacts of the 2021 Winter Storm Uri on subsided housing residents and the factors that enabled or hindered their effective adaptation. We conducted semi-structured interviews two to four months post-disaster with residents from eleven subsidized housing sites in College Station, Texas. A total of 33 participants aged between 24 and 90 completed the interviews. Guided by relevant theories such as the Protective Motivation Theory (PMT), a combination of inductive and deductive coding was carried out using MaxQDA qualitative data analysis software, and codes, themes, and categories were identified reiteratively. The results demonstrated the process involving cognitive appraisal, preparation intention, and behavioral adaptation and the roles played by environmental stressors and infrastructural modifiers in subsidized housing. Specifically, we found: 1) insufficient risk communication and the digital divide hindered formation of accurate hazard appraisal, 2) high perceived costs of preparation contributed to low coping appraisal, 3) Differences in physical infrastructure conditions were linked to varying adaptation capacities and behaviors, and 4) overall social isolation was partly remedied by clustered social ties formed within neighborhoods that were homophily. The implications for future disaster policy and planning are discussed.

Local pharmaceutical research and development capacity in a developing country: a qualitative exploration of perspectives from key stakeholders in Ethiopia

PurposeDespite its importance in ensuring sustainable healthcare, there are huge challenges with pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) especially for developing countries mainly due to the high investment costs naturally associated with such activities. In this regard, the pharmaceutical sector in Ethiopia, the most populous nation in East Africa, faces numerous challenges. The current study aimed at assessing the R&D capacity of the local pharmaceutical manufacturers from the perspectives of key informants working in the companies and supporting government offices and education institutions.MethodsA qualitative study design employing in-depth interviews using semi-structured interview guides with flexible probing techniques was used for data collection. The study involved purposively selected participants who represented major stakeholders such as managers in the R&D departments of pharmaceutical manufacturers, officers and leaders in concerned government agencies and researchers in a local university. All transcribed interviews were subjected to thematic analysis and the Qualitative Data Analysis software in family R (RQDA) was used for data analysis.ResultsA total of 14 participants were involved in the study and three major themes were identified from the interviews. Current R&D capacity, opportunities and challenges for involvement in R&D were the major themes. Under current R&D capacity, the weak R&D status of local pharmaceutical plants and minimal university–industry linkage were identified. The challenges of pharmaceutical R&D in Ethiopia included weak governmental and managerial support; difficult procurement processes for R&D input; and the high cost of R&D. Availability of trainable human power and planned government incentives were identified as the opportunities.ConclusionOverall, there is a low level of R&D capacity in local pharmaceutical industries and timely interventional strategies should be implemented through collaboration of academia, research institutions and pharmaceutical industries.

Distributed interpretation – teaching reconstructive methods in the social sciences supported by artificial intelligence

This article highlights teaching and learning in reconstructive research supported by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine interpretation in particular. The focus is whether the traditional teaching of methodological competence through research workshops can be supplemented with artificial intelligence (natural language processing, NLP) implemented in computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). A case study shows that AI models can be trained to interpret texts. Thus, distributed interpretation by humans and AI becomes possible, opening up new possibilities for teaching qualitative methods. How people deal with these new possibilities is presented based on an explorative evaluation of a group discussion with young researchers. Finally, this contribution discusses the possibilities and limits of this new form of interpretation together with a machine.

Emergency Department Experience and the Use of Non-Pharmacologic Treatment for Acute Pain Among Patients with Sickle Disease

Background: Appropriate management for patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with acute pain from vaso-occlusive episodes (VOE) primarily includes treatment with parenteral opioid and non-opioid analgesia and fluids if the episode is uncomplicated. Non-pharmacological strategies that significantly affect non-physical aspects of behavioral, social, and cultural life, have been studied for pain treatment in sickle cell patients; however, the data on the effectiveness of these methods are limited. Objectives: This work aims to assess the overall ED experience among patients seeking care for acute VOE. We also aim to assess any effective alternative pain management strategies used by patients to treat their acute pain symptoms. Methods: We conducted ED follow up assessments for patients who sought care in the ED for acute pain from vaso-occlusive episodes from January 1, 2022- July 15, 2022. These were brief individual phone interviews. The semi-structured interview guide was created using a hospital specific patient experience questionnaire in addition to questions pertaining to pain management in the acute and day-to-day settings, demographic data including, age, sex, emergency department visit characteristics (length of stay (LOS), emergency severity index assignment (ESI), time to first opioid). The interviews were analyzed using a framework matrix analysis. This qualitative data reduction technique was used to review, summarize, and classify the interview data. NVivo 20 qualitative data analysis software includes a framework matrix tool used to manage data and facilitate this analysis in which participant comments about key content were aggregated and entered for review. Results: Overview: Among the 21 patients who met study criteria, eight participants are included in this analysis. Six participants identified as male, and two participants identified as female. ED Experience: Patients rated their ED care from a 3/10 to a 10/10 (avg 6.4, +/- 2.6). Common themes included prolonged wait times for pain management (6/8 participants). Five of the eight patients interviewed expressed gratitude for the care provided though noted some room for improvement. One participant noted "they could have been nicer to me. It's like they don't talk to each other" (2/8 participants). Patients also expressed frustration when intravenous access issues arise and compounding delays in treatment. Pain management: Three of the eight patients interviewed reported using scheduled opioids (oxycodone-5 patients, and methadone-2 patients) at home every 3-8 hours. One patient declined to answer questions about home opioid use. All patients received hydromorphone for acute management in the ED. Two of the eight patients expressed knowledge of their care coordination pain management plan. Alternative pain management: Five of the eight patients used heat or hot packs as their primary alternative pain management and specifically referenced this as an intervention that they would find helpful in the ED. Two patients prioritized distractions such as video games or other screen time. One patient relied on family support, massages, and meditation. Conclusions: Patients experiencing acute pain from VOE rely on the ED for care. Optimizing that care will not only improve patient's health, but also their well-being. Considering complementary alternatives for acute pain management including heat therapy (packs, blankets) as well as massage (heated chair) or distractions (video games, reading or movies) may provide additional benefits while patients seek care for acute pain crises.

Critical findings of the sixth assessment report (AR6) of working Group I of the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) for global climate change policymaking a summary for policymakers (SPM) analysis

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to assess how intergovernmental panel on climate change’s (IPCC’s) sixth assessment report of Working Group I (WGI), a Summary for Policymakers (SPM), has evaluated the current climate change situation. The author uses the qualitative content analysis (QCA) method (i.e. summative content analysis [SCA]) to identify critical points of the SPM.Design/methodology/approachTo better understand the WGI report and its SPM, the author uses the thematic analysis, often called the QCA method. This study takes more steps and uses one of the main qualitative content analysis approaches (i.e. SCA). Therefore, QCA (SCA) can help the author count the occurrence of certain words using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software that quantifies the words in the data. This process helps the author to understand codes and patterns (e.g. the concept in the results section).FindingsInterestingly, the AR6 says more about adaptation for policy makers in sections C (Climate information for risk assessment) and D (Mitigation of future climate change) than in sections A and D. Finally, this study concludes that the IPCC WGI SPM has addressed evidence on global climate change policymaking for SPMa, SPMd (mitigation-based strategies and mitigation policy [MP]) and SPMb, SPMc (adaptation policy and adaptation-based strategy).Research limitations/implicationsFirst, this study refers only to the contribution of WGI, a SPM. The findings of this study do not necessarily provide a full understanding of what the AR6 WGI SPM says about climate change. It points out that the QDA Miner software and Voyant tool do not include all variables and examples where mitigation and adaptation-based strategies are discussed. The guidance for coding is based on the approved version of IPCC AR6 WGI SPM. The final limitation is that the relatedness of key words (e.g. confidence, high and warming) is sometimes ambiguous; even experts may disagree on how the words are linked to form a concept. Thus, this method works at the keyword level. A more intelligent method would use more meaningful information than keywords.Originality/valueThis study used qualitative data analysis (SCA) to explore what was said about climate change in four sections of the IPCC AR6 WGI SPM, which may influence current and future global climate change policymaking.

Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software to Support Digital Research Workflows

While software packages such as NVivo are typically considered useful for qualitative data analysis, in actuality they are powerful and flexible enough to serve as the central component of a robust digital research workflow. Various features of these packages can be used across the entire research process from reviewing the literature to writing up the study’s findings. This article provides an overview of available qualitative data analysis software (QDAS) packages, including how to: use software tactics to enact research design strategies; select an appropriate QDAS package; report the use of software in the research report; and consider implications of QDAS use for human resource development scholars.

Perceived factors that influence adoption, implementation and sustainability of an evidence-based intervention promoting healthful eating and physical activity in childcare centers in an urban area in the United States serving children from low-income, racially/ethnically diverse families.

Early childcare centers offer optimal settings to provide healthy built environments where preschool age children spend a majority of their week. Many evidence-based interventions (EBIs) promoting healthful eating and physical activity for early childcare settings exist, but there is a limited understanding of how best to support adoption, implementation and sustainability in community settings. This study examined how early childcare teachers and administrators from Chicago-area childcare centers serving children from low-income, racially/ethnically diverse communities viewed an EBI called Hip to Health (H3), and the factors they perceived as relevant for EBI adoption, implementation, and sustainability. A multiple methods study including key informant interviews and a brief survey was conducted. Key informant interviews with teachers and administrators from childcare centers located in Chicago, IL were completed between December 2020 and May 2021. An interview guide and coding guide based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) was developed. Interview transcripts were team coded in MAXQDA Qualitative Data Analysis software. Thematic analysis was used to identify findings specific to adoption, implementation, and sustainability. Participants were also asked to respond to survey measures about the acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness of H3. Overall, teachers (n = 20) and administrators (n = 16) agreed that H3 was acceptable, appropriate, and feasible. Low start-up costs, ease-of-use, adaptability, trialability, compatibility, and leadership engagement were important to EBI adoption. Timely and flexible training was critical to implementation. Participants noted sustainability was tied to low ongoing costs, access to ongoing support, and positive observable benefits for children and positive feedback from parents. These findings suggest that EBIs suitable for adoption, implementation, and sustainment in childcare centers serving racially/ethnically diverse, low-income families should be adaptable, easy to use, and low-cost (initial and ongoing). There is also some evidence from these findings of the heterogeneity that exists among childcare centers serving low-income families in that smaller, less resourced centers are often less aware of EBIs, and the preparation needed to implement EBIs. Future research should examine how to better support EBI dissemination and implementation to these settings.

Pregnancy and sexual related problems among women living on the street in dire Dawa City, Eastern Ethiopia, 2021: qualitative study

BackgroundThe problem of women and youths living on the street is a global phenomenon. It has created countless problems while they lived on the street; such as unwanted pregnancies, sexual exploitation and prostitution. It is a frequent observation to see women begging on the streets of major cities in Ethiopia having one or two babies by their sides. This study will give an in-depth understanding of the distressing and highly challenging problem among women on the street regarding pregnancy and related problems.ObjectiveTo explore pregnancy and sexual-related problems among women living on the street in Dire Dawa city, Eastern Ethiopia 2021.MethodsA community-based phenomenological qualitative study was conducted at Dire Dawa city. Data was collected from homeless women and Key informants through focus group discussion and in-depth interviews using a semi-structured tool aided by a voice recorder. Data were analyzed thematically using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software Atlas.ti7. The thematic analysis with inductive approach goes through 6 steps; Familiarization, Coding, Generating themes, Reviewing themes, Defining and naming themes and Writing up.ResultWomen living on the street are more likely to experience physical abuse, sexual harassment, Sexual transmitted infection, unprotected sex and unwanted pregnancy. As a result, the fate of this pregnancy is abortion leads to high risk of getting health complications as most abortions are made in illegal and unsafe ways.ConclusionTeen pregnancy, STI, rape and unsafe abortion are the major concerns as it accompanied by their homelessness situation and abusive lifestyles. The regional health bureau needs to understand the extent of problem and plan to organize an awareness creation program on STI, risk of pregnancy and SRH services.

Nexus between the invisibility of agricultural extension services and rural livelihoods development: Assertions from rural farming communities

Agricultural extension is one of the essential services that are offered by the South African Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD), to facilitate agricultural development in rural communities. The significance of agricultural extension is that it offers new knowledge to farmers and allows space for growth through various interventions such as agrarian transformation and improving livelihoods through the promotion of agriculture as a vehicle for ‘pro-poor’ economic growth. However, there is a concern that extension services are invisible in resource-restricted and previously marginalised rural communities. The study presented in this paper examined farmer’s experiences with extension practitioners and the impact of a lack of extension services on the development of impoverished rural communities. The researchers adopted a qualitative design wherein six focus group discussions were held to gather data from the farmers. Data were analyzed using ATLAS.ti22, a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). Four themes of extension services that have a direct linkage to livelihood development, namely, the impact on rural livelihoods, production challenges, marketability, and economic impact, and the invisibility of extension services, were the central point of discussion.

Fintech lending fraud prevention strategy: A case study

This study aims to determine the strategy of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to prevent people from being trapped in fintech lending fraud. This qualitative research used case study method by employing semi-structured in-depth interview as the technique to collect data from five respondents. The research data were processed with the help of Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS), namely the NVivo 11 software application. The results show that there are three main strategies used by OJK Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia to prevent the public from being scammed by fintech lending: First, massive implementation of financial literacy education in a comprehensive manner to improve public financial literacy; second, use of the Consumer Protection Portal Application (APPK) as a digital complaint service for the public and consumers to report the Financial Services Business Actors (PUJK) who are suspected of committing fintech lending fraud; third, maximizing the role of Regional Investment Alert Task Force (SWID) in publishing a list of legal and illegal financial services, including fintech lending.

How do Muslim-Majority Countries Respond to Islamic Political Parties? Research Trend Studies and Theme Mapping

This study aims to explore Islamic political parties in major Islamic countries. Previous studies have examined Islamic Political Parties with various topics accompanied by different focuses. However, no research has contributed to mapping the extent of the trend in the study of Islamic political parties. The breadth of space to examine the phenomenon of Islamic political parties offers an excellent opportunity for further researchers to re-examine this issue. To bridge this, trend studies and mapping of problems and themes were carried out. This study uses qualitative methods to analyze working texts on publications related to Islamic Political Parties. Research data is mined from the Scopus academic database using a search strategy to generate data relevant to the problem to be studied. In processing the mined data, we use Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) software, Nvivo12 Plus. The results of an in-depth analysis of a collection of academic manuscripts mined from the Scopus academy database for two decades (2001-2021) yielded 171 documents for further study. The data analysis findings show that the intensity of documents in each country is different, which can then be further classified based on the type of document, subject area, author with the highest number of records, and distribution of affiliations and publishers. The level of document intensity in each country has been shown, with Turkey being the country that contributed the most documents, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, and India. The dominant issues and themes of each country have also been identified.

“I don’t care about the money”: A thematic analysis of parenting practices of youth sport

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate practices of raising up young athletes from a sociological perspective. In particular, I looked at how parents enacted their capitals within the contexts of youth sport as a social field. This qualitative study involved 6 participants who had experiences of parenting their children in youth sport for at least five years. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was employed to facilitate inductive analysis toward the construction of themes from the data. A computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS), namely ATLAS.ti 22, was utilized to help the researcher manage complex data set and achieve trustworthiness criteria. Three themes have been constructed through mainly inductive analysis. These were (1) the contextual practices of youth sport as social field, (2) economic, cultural and social capital at play in parenting practices of youth sport, and (3) capital exchange as practices within and beyond youth sport. The current study concludes that sociological thoughts on social field and capitals are advantageous to understand the social complexity of day-to-day parenting practices of youth sport. However, agenda for further studies would need to explore the field of youth sport utilizing other sociological frameworks.

Provider Perspectives: Identification and Follow-up of Infants who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Without timely screening, diagnosis, and intervention, hearing loss can cause significant delays in a child's speech, language, social, and emotional development. In 2019, Texas had nearly twice the average rate of loss to follow-up (LFU) or loss to documentation (LTD; i.e., missing documentation of services received) among infants who did not pass their newborn hearing screening compared to the United States overall (51.1 vs. 27.5%). We aimed to identify factors contributing to LFU/LTD among infants who do not pass their newborn hearing screening in Texas. Data were collected through semistructured qualitative interviews with 56 providers along the hearing care continuum, including hospital newborn hearing screening program staff, audiologists, primary care physicians, and early intervention (EI) program staff located in three rural and urban public health regions in Texas. Following recording and transcription of the interviews, we used qualitative data analysis software to analyze themes using a conventional content analysis approach. Frequently cited barriers included problems with family access to care, difficulty contacting patients, problems with communication between providers and referrals, lack of knowledge among providers and parents, and problems using the online reporting system. Providers in rural areas more often mentioned problems with family access to care and contacting families compared to providers in urban areas. These findings provide insight into strategies that public health professionals and health care providers can use to work together to help further increase the number of children identified early who may benefit from EI services. · Infants with suspected hearing loss may not receive timely diagnosis or early intervention.. · We interviewed healthcare providers in Texas along the hearing care continuum.. · Findings suggest strategies to increase the number of children with hearing loss identified early..

Exploring loss and grief during the COVID-19 pandemic: A scoping review of qualitative studies

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about multiple losses to various groups, namely patients, families and healthcare professionals. Grief, which is the reaction to these losses, could cause strain on these individuals' physical and mental health if not identified and managed early. This scoping review analysed loss, grief and how they were managed among these groups during the pandemic. This scoping review utilised the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Statement extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and the Joanna Briggs Institute framework for scoping reviews. Only qualitative studies relating to loss and grief and their management were included. Of 166 studies screened, 69 were included in the study. Qualitative analysis and data coding of each record were conducted through qualitative data analysis software. Losses included the death of family members, patients, colleagues and others. They also included the loss of usual routines, lifestyles and physical health. The grief experienced was multidimensional, affecting mainly the emotional, physical, social and existential realms. Anger, guilt and fear resulted from unsatisfactory farewells, issues with funerals, social isolation, financial strain and stigmatisation. Management strategies could be categorised into 5 themes: communication, finance, counselling, education and spiritual care. Loss and grief identification and management among patients, family members and healthcare professionals are critically important during this COVID-19 pandemic. Current operating guidelines have proven insufficient in managing loss and grief. Innovative strategies are essential to tackle the many dimensions of loss and grief. Nevertheless, further research is necessary to better understand the effectiveness of implemented policies.

Patterns of Psychoactive Substance Misuse in Undergraduate University Students: The Case of Mekelle University, Ethiopia

Background: Substance misuse is a public health concern among University students. Understanding the critical times and places for substance misuse among University students helps to inform effective preventive strategies. However, there is a dearth of studies in Ethiopian Universities on this topic. Here, we aimed to explore the patterns of psychoactive substance misuse, specifically about time and places, among undergraduate students at Mekelle University. Subject and Methods: An explorative qualitative study design was conducted in 2017. Five focus-group discussions among substance user students followed by eleven in-depth interviews with the user and non-user students, proctors, and a bar owners were conducted. In addition, four key informant researchers were involved. Participants were purposefully selected. The data were audio taped, transcribed verbatim and imported into Atlas.ti qualitative data analysis software version 7.5 for coding and analysis. Data were analyzed inductively to capture the emerging themes. Results: Our study showed that students consume alcohol in the evenings, on weekend days, holidays, after exams and at celebrations; smoke cigarettes after waking in the morning and after eating lunch. Concurrent substance use like smoking cigarettes, chewing Khat and drinking alcohol was evident. Khat chewing was reported mainly around noon, in the afternoon and on weekends. Substance use generally peaks at weekends, at the start and end of academic semesters, and when graduation approaches. However, students who become addicted may continue using substances. Students easily accessed and used substances around and inside the gates of the campuses. Conclusion: Event-specific celebrations are linked with substance misuse among University students. The ease with which students can access substances around the campuses increases the likelihood of substance misuse. Proactive interventions that include the provision of alcohol-free recreational alternatives to events on campus, high-risk substance misuse surveillance, tobacco cessation interventions, and promoting plain packaging are recommended.

Empowering students to engage in the design of COVID-19 related gamified applications

COVID-19 related games have recently been developed to combat misinformation and raise awareness of COVID-19 protocols. COVID-19 related games or gamified apps were designed using top-down approaches (from company to players). The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted challenges in their uptake and usage. Strategies such as co-design may be leveraged to address these challenges, particularly for developing new technologies. This in-progress, exploratory mixed-methods study aimed to engage university students in designing gamified applications to address their needs amidst and post-pandemic. Its first step was to empower students to think of design ideas. The study's research questions were: What are students’ goals for designing pandemic-related gamified apps? To what extent do students make use of gamification techniques in their design? A convenience sample of 20 third/fourth-year undergraduates expressed their ideas individually, in an online class, at a time of university closures (May 2021). A second sample of 37 first-year undergraduates engaged in the same activity in a face-to-face class (December 2021). The data were analyzed using a qualitative data analysis software. Thematic analysis was used, data were coded, and themes and sub-themes emerged. Qualitative analysis of all 57 students’ responses revealed two main themes expressed by students as a goal for their app: a) increasing pandemic awareness and following hygiene protocols (24/57, 42.1%) and b) building resilience through different ways to cope with the pandemic, including physical exercise, social interaction, entertainment and education (31/57, 54.4%). Students maintained similar design goals for proposed apps despite increasingly less strict public-health measures from May to December 2021. The majority of students (52.6%, 30/57) used one to three gamification techniques, while 38.6% of them (22/57) did not use any. Third/fourth-year students used significantly more (t55=4.65, p=0.000) gamification techniques (M=2.35, SD=1.31) compared to first-year students (M=0.81, SD=1.13). The first stage of this study showed value in involving students in the design of interventions that targeted themselves and revealed the need for training students who lack a design background in identifying relevant gamification techniques. Future research will aim to materialize students’ suggested design ideas into design prototypes by involving them in the process through interdisciplinary collaborations.

81 Family Perceptions of TRaC-K (Telehealth Rounding and Consultation for Kids) a Novel Inpatient Tertiary Regional Virtual Health Collaborative

Abstract Background Telehealth Rounding and Consultation for Kids (TRaC-K) is an innovative virtual tertiary-regional collaborative care service for regional pediatric inpatients launched in Southern Alberta in August 2020. TRaC-K uses a mobile audiovisual platform to connect regional and tertiary pediatricians and multidisciplinary clinicians caring for admitted children from Southeastern Alberta. The mobile cart also enables children and families to participate in TRaC-K sessions at the bedside. The TRaC-K model is being evaluated during a 1 year pilot between the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH). Objectives As part of the evaluation of the TRaC-K model, we aimed to explore family perceptions of their experience participating in one or more TRaC-K sessions. Design/Methods Family perceptions of receiving care using the TRaC-K model were explored using qualitative analysis of family interviews. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with consenting families who had participated in one or more TRaC-K sessions while their child was admitted at ACH or MHRH. Interviews were conducted via ZOOM or telephone by a research coordinator experienced in qualitative interviews. A short questionnaire of participant information was completed. A series of questions were asked in addition to clarifying questions. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and the NVivo 12 Pro qualitative data analysis software was used for coding. Inductive thematic analysis was completed by two research team members and three transcriptions were coded by both and compared to ensure alignment in coding methodology. There were 15 transcriptions in total. Themes and subthemes were shared with the research team to validate the assignment of quotes to themes and further organize the themes and subthemes. Results Of the 85 TRaC-K sessions during the one year pilot, 36 sessions included at least one family member participant. Of the family members participating in a TRaC-K session, 15 families completed an interview with contributions from one or more parents/guardians. Thematic analysis identified five themes and several subthemes. Themes included: 1. family centered care, 2. access to care closer to home with a subtheme of ease of transition, 3. enhances quality of care with a subtheme of assessment, 4. communication tool with subthemes of real time, technology, facilitates collaboration and shared decision making, and 5. increases family confidence. Conclusion TRaC-K, a tertiary-regional inpatient virtual health model, was perceived by families to be beneficial to their child’s care and their own experience with inpatient care. Families were able to identify many facets of their experience with this novel model of care. To enhance family centered care for families from outside large urban centers whose children require inpatient admission, virtual health models like TRaC-K that enable tertiary-regional clinician collaboration and family participation should be spread to other pediatric inpatient populations.

Collaborative comparisons: A pragmatist approach towards designing large-scale, comparative qualitative research

This article draws lessons for organizing and designing large-scale qualitative comparative research in turbulent, rapidly evolving, real-world settings. The challenge to the researcher is that such studies need to meet conflicting requirements of rigor, relevance, and responsiveness. Recognizing that in such settings scientific research cannot be insulated from its environment, the article discusses a pragmatist approach to comparative research design. Using the case of the SolPan project (Solidarity in Times of a Pandemic), a large-scale and longitudinal qualitative comparative study of people’s experiences during the Covid pandemic, the article presents basic principles of pragmatist research design, such as problem-orientation, design-in-action, and the use of a plurality of evidence. It then argues that interpretation is at the heart of all comparison, and that large-scale qualitative comparative research combines the detailed contextual richness of interpretive explanation, the systematicity, robustness and transparency of large-N comparative analysis, and the flexibility of emergent design. We describe the design and methodology of SolPan and illustrate this with an empirical example. First, we argue that research design and project organization are continuous and reframe comparative research design as generative organization. Second, we describe the use of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software to assist in analysing large amounts of interview data. In the final section we describe some of the limitations of this large-scale qualitative comparative research.

Harnessing stakeholder sentiment on social networking sites

Communicating reputation to stakeholders and assessing whether these messages have beenreceived favourably are essential components of organisations’ overall communication strategies.These actions are, however, becoming increasingly difficult to execute as a result of sophisticatedstakeholder expectations as well as notions of continuous stakeholder participation andengagement on social networking sites (SNSs) by means of the co-creation of communicationcontent. This research proposes a new conceptual framework for reputation management onSNSs that aims to address these issues. The framework is essentially based on the utilisation ofcomputer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) such as Leximancer and Centimin the reputation management process. Based on the findings, it is suggested that CAQDASenables reputation managers to accurately measure stakeholder sentiment, identify prevalentstakeholder discourses pertaining to organisational communication disseminated on SNSs, anddetect threats that could damage corporate reputation.

Stakeholders analysis of COVID-19 management and control: a case of Iran

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic is a multi-faceted phenomenon with many political, economic and social consequences. Success in managing and controlling this pandemic depends on the coordinated efforts of many organizations and institutions. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and analyze the actors and stakeholders related to managing and controlling this pandemic in Iran.MethodsThis mix-method stakeholder analysis was conducted in 2021 nationwide as retrospectively. The purposive sampling method was applied when inviting eligible participants to participate in the study. Our study was conducted in two phases. In the qualitative phase, data were collected using a semi-structured interview. An interview guide was developed based on the WHO stakeholder analysis framework. In the quantitative phase, we used a questionnaire developed based on the study framework. Each question was scored on a 5-point Likert scale, with a score greater than 4 was considered as high, 3–4 was considered as moderate, and 1–3 was considered as low. Data were analyzed using framework analysis, WHO stakeholders’ analysis framework and MENDELOW matrix. MAXQDA qualitative data analysis software Version 11 and Policy Maker software (Version. 4) were used for data analysis.ResultsA total of 48 stakeholders were identified. Ministry of Health (MoH), National Headquarters for Coronavirus Control (NHCC) had the highest participation level, high supportive position, and knowledge of the subject. The Parliament of Iran (PoI), Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) had the highest power/influence during the Covid-19 epidemic. Only two stakeholders (6.06%) had high participation, and 18.18% had moderate participation. All stakeholders except for the NHCC and the MoH lacked appropriate knowledge of the subject. Furthermore, only three stakeholders (9.09%) had high power/influence.ConclusionGiven the multidimensional nature of Covid-19, most institutions and organizations were involved in managing this pandemic. Stakeholders with high power/authority and resources had a low/moderate participation level and a moderate supportive position. Moreover, organizations with a high supportive position and participation had low power/authority and resources to cope with COVID-19.
