Referential processes in the construction of the controversial modality: a study of tweets published by osmar terra mep

This article aims to analyze, from the interface between Textual Linguistics and Argumentation, the use of referential processes in anti-vaccine speeches published on Twitter on the page of Deputy Osmar Terra. In this way, we discuss, based on the polemical modality, how the argumentative directions around the subject of discourse "vaccine" were constructed. Our corpus of analysis consists of tweets published in April 2022. The work constitutes an exploratory study, with qualitative research characteristics and deductive method, allowing us to observe that the argumentative marks manifest themselves through referential processes, such as the nominal forms, referential introductions and anaphores. We rely on the theoretical conceptions of Amossy (2017) to understand the notion of argumentation in the speeches, as well as the peculiarities of the controversial modality. Extending the View Between the argument and LT, we follow the theoretical assumptions of Cavalcante et al. (2020; 2022). In order to understand the concept of text as process, we rely on the assumptions of Koch (2015) and the studies of Monada and Dubois (2015), Cavalcante, Custódio Filho and Brito (2014), which highlight the importance of understanding referencing as a discursive activity. The study indicates that referential processes contribute to the argumentative dynamics of the text and the objects of speech is introduced, resumed, and (re)categorized depending on the communicative purposes of the enunciator. Furthermore, by means of textual strategies, traces of the polemical modality are revealed.

Teaching meteorological lexis on the basis of national language corpora

This work aims to research methods of teaching meteorological vocabulary and metaphors on meteorology using corpora of national languages. The main focus is on how corpus data can be integrated into the learning process to effectively master complex meteorological terms and expressions. The study examines various techniques and approaches to using corpora, including frequency analysis, contextual learning, and comparison with multimedia materials. The method of teaching a foreign language is based on the cognitive principle of teaching. The study of the composition of lexical units is based on the understanding and use of thinking and action means that it must be based. At the present time, the importance and relevance of the method in teaching vocabulary is explained by the assimilation of language as a means of thinking through this method. The success of the implementation of this approach in teaching vocabulary depends on the intellectual ability that students use to understand, remember and use knowledge about the lexical system of the language provided by a set of methods and efforts, as well as their lexical good mastery of the material. Currently, the need to master the skills and abilities of oral language communication for personal and professional purposes is a generally recognized fact. In accordance with the decision of the Bologna Convention, the priority task is to ensure multi-level training of specialists, including the formation of intercultural communicative competence in students, optimizing the effectiveness of contacts in a specific area and communication situation and achieving certain communication purposes.

Screen Time and Child Behavioral Disorders During COVID-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review.

The extensive use of various electronic games and communication devices, particularly among children and adolescents, has raised concerns, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the link between screen time and internalizing disorders, such as anxiety and depression, among individuals aged ≤18 during the global COVID-19 pandemic. This systematic review aims to summarize scientific publications from 2019 to early 2022 by searching databases, including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO, to identify suitable studies. In each paper, we searched the following keywords and their synonyms: screen, child, high school, middle school, and psychiatric disorders. The quality of the selected papers was evaluated using a checklist recommended by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for observational cohort studies. Out of 986 reports identified, we included 12 papers with 14,483 participants. The study revealed a negative correlation between screen time (TV, computer, video games, and mobile phones) and behavioral outcomes. Smartphones were the most frequently used devices, with video games being more prevalent among older participants for education, communication, and entertainment purposes. The prevalence of depression ranged between 10% and 25%. Furthermore, anxiety and depression were identified as predictors of increased screen usage. Some results displayed variation based on the type of screen exposure, the questionnaires used, and the age of the participants. The findings imply an indirect association between increased screen time and depression and anxiety. It is crucial to consider limitations on screen time exposure and parental supervision as measures to prevent certain mental disorders.

Energy Harvesting in Electric Power Systems for Data Communication Purposes

Aiming to illuminate the path towards integrating energy harvesting (EH) technologies into modern electric power systems, thereby enabling more efficient and sustainable energy solutions, this paper explores energy harvesting within electric power systems and points out its potential to power data communication purposes. In this sense, we examine the overarching principles of EH in these systems, spotlighting both the merits and limitations associated with energy extraction across varying voltage levels and electric signal frequency bands. Central components of EH devices, alongside a spectrum of harvesting methodologies, are thoroughly reviewed. Also, we showcase a case study that provides a quantitative assessment of EH potential in electric power systems. The manuscript culminates in a forward-looking analysis of EH, considering emerging technologies that promise to redefine the landscape. These include integrating hybrid power line and wireless systems, strategies for optimal power allocation, enhancements in physical layer security, the innovative concept of negawatts, advancements in harvesting circuit designs and applying non-orthogonal multiple access techniques

When East Meets West: A Comparative Analysis of Credibility and Persuasive Appeals in Cross-Cultural Email Negotiations between Genders

The bulk of studies focusing on cross-cultural variations in persuasive appeals examines letters or newspaper articles (Al-Ali 2006; Alhudhaif , 2005; Bhatia , 2014; Connor et al ., 1995; Ismail , 2010). It is rare for a study to examine persuasive appeals within intercultural settings via email communication for academic proposal purposes. To this end, this study investigates the use of credibility appeals in emails sent by Saudi and Australian PhD applicants to potential Australian supervisors. The study employs a genre-based approach, utilizing Swales' (1990) framework for genre analysis to identify the communicative purposes of each move in academic email negotiations. The results suggest cultural differences in self-presentation strategies. Despite quantitative similarities in credibility appeals usage, qualitative differences suggest cultural influences on communication styles. The study highlights the need for a culture-bridging approach to academic writing, promoting intercultural communication and contributing to a more comprehensive comprehension of academic email negotiations.

The Application of Domestication and Foreignization Strategies in Translation of Tourism Texts

With the implementation of China’s reform and opening-up policy and economic development, the tourism industry has also grown rapidly, attracting an increasing number of foreign tourists to choose China as their travel destination. To better promote and introduce scenic spots, the English translation of tourist attractions is crucial. The choice of translation strategy has become a focal point and core in the translation work of tourist texts. Newmark’s text function theory provides theoretical guidance for the application of domestication and foreignization translation strategies in translating tourist texts. Therefore, the translation of tourist texts demands not only accurate conveyance of the original information but also linguistic simplicity. Tourist texts belong to the typical “vocative” functional category, primarily aiming to convey information and induce action. Simultaneously, they contain a wealth of highly distinctive cultural information. Therefore, the translation of tourist texts should accurately convey the original information while maintaining linguistic simplicity and accessibility. This requires translators, during the translation process, to integrate the different functions and communicative purposes of the text, considering the audience’s receptiveness and determining the application of domestication and foreignization translation methods based on practical considerations. This paper, based on the two translation strategies of domestication and foreignization, combines the Wudalianchi Global Geopark Text for Outdoor Interpretation Panels and Outdoor Discovery Land for Popularization of Science as an example to explore how to apply domestication and foreignization strategies in the translation of tourist texts, aiming for better communication effectiveness.

Surviving covid-19: a multimodal discourse analysis of new media covid-19 vaccination-related pictorials

Abstract This paper explores the communicative acts deployed in covid-19 vaccination-related pictorials circulated on digital media platforms. Seven internet images were purposively sampled with a view to exploring their communicative functions as well as their generic structure. The data, which were culled from the websites of the World Health Organisation, Centre for Disease Control, Pan American Health Organisation and Facebook, were subjected to qualitative analysis. The study deployed van Leeuwen’s Multimodal Discourse Analysis and Yuen’s Generic Structure Potential as theoretical anchor. The multimodal communicative acts are deployed for instructive, illustrative, informative, persuasive, inviting and advisory purposes. Categories such as Lead, Emblem, Announcement and Enhancer are compulsory in the data while Display, Tag and Call-and-Visit Information are non-compulsory elements. This can be catalogued as: ‘Lead^(Display)^Emblem^(Announcement)^(Enhancer)^(Tag)^(Call-and-Visit Information)’. The study contends that the various semiotic resources deployed in the internet-circulated covid-19 images are used not only for informative and other communicative purposes but also to evoke attitudinal change towards and encourage widespread acceptance of the covid-19 vaccines.

Peale's dolphins (Lagenorhynchus australis) are acoustic mergers between dolphins and porpoises

Most dolphin species produce broadband clicks for echolocation (i.e., biosonar pulses), and whistles and burst-pulsed calls for communication purposes. A few dolphin species in the southern hemisphere are reported to only produce clicks of a more narrowband high-frequency (NBHF) type, very similar to the clicks produced by porpoises. Here, we use underwater acoustic recordings of Peale's dolphins (Lagenorhynchus australis) in the Falkland Islands to show that they also can produce broadband clicks and tonal whistle sounds similar to other whistling odontocete species in addition to NBHF clicks. Whistles and broadband clicks co-occurred in seven out of twelve acoustic encounters with Peale's dolphins. The co-occurrence of whistles and broadband signals, which were predominately burst-pulses, produced by Peale's dolphins in this study points to a probable function as communication signals. Furthermore, the measured frequency and time parameters of Peale's dolphin whistles were comparable with whistles recorded from four additional species in the Lagenorhynchus genus in various parts of their ranges. This is the only species of Lagenorhynchus recorded to date that can relax acoustic crypsis in a similar manner as Heaviside's (Cephalorhynchus heavisidii), Commerson's (C. commersonii), and Hector's (C. hectori) dolphins. Our findings make it likely that additional NBHF species have the ability to generate both pulsed signal types and whistles, and further challenges the acoustic classification of NBHF species.

Poetry Translation and Creative Misreading—on Gopal Sukhu’s English Rendering of “Lisao”

This article aims to analyze Gopal Sukhu’s singular misreading of the Chinese poem “Lisao” in his English translation, examine the reasons and types of his misreading, and explore the wider implications of misreading for literary translation. Misreading is integral to poem translation due to the semiotic nature of language, the aesthetic appeal of poetry, the idiosyncrasy of translator, and the communicative purpose of translation. It is found that in his translation of “Lisao”, Sukhu makes deliberate misreading in four dimensions, namely, retelling the allegorical story, turning ambiguity into clarity, making adaptation on rhetoric devices, and creating textual cohesion. Sukhu’s creative misreading endows a renewed poetic value to the original.

Mothers` Attitudes on the Influence of Social Media on Parenting Styles of Adolescent Girls in Tanga Municipality, Tanzania

This study aimed to assess the influence of mother’s attitude on social media towards parenting styles of adolescent girls. The study employed a mixed methods research approach with convergent parallel design. Questionnaires, interview, and documentary review were prominent methods used in data collection. 104 respondents were recruited to collect data which deem suitable for the study. The obtained data analysed by using free QDA Miner and SPSS for non- numerical and numerical data respectively. The findings show that mothers have either positive or negative attitude on social media use of adolescent girls. The positive mother’s attitude is influenced by such factors as screening time, learning and communication purpose. While negative mother’s attitude is influenced by factors as early sexual relationship and age of adolescent girls. Finally, the researcher recommended that adolescent should be emphasized on the positive use of social media to increase their performance in the educational carrier

Purposes of Internet Use and Its Impacts on Physical and Psychological Health of Korean Older Adults.

Older adults engage in online activities for various purposes. An increasing number of studies are establishing connections between the purposes of internet use and their impacts on health outcomes. This study aimed to examine how the purposes of internet use affect self-rated health and depressive symptoms among Korean older adults. A nationally representative survey of community-dwelling older adults in Korea was used in the analysis (n = 5094). Instrumental internet use (using the internet to access various forms of information, services, and other resources) in Korean older adults was as common as interpersonal communication use, and the purposes of internet use were mainly for information seeking for everyday needs and engaging in various activities for enjoyment. Internet use for interpersonal communication and instrumental purposes was significantly associated with depressive symptoms and self-rated health. Internet use for instrumental purposes had a greater impact on self-rated health (β = -0.186) and depressive symptoms (β = -0.160) compared with the impacts of interpersonal communication internet use on self-rated health (β = -0.101) and depressive symptoms (β = -0.047). The findings highlighted the necessity of designing interventions that take into account the different purposes of internet use for older adults in order to maximize its benefits, paying special emphasis for information seeking online.

Study on the Effectiveness of Commitment Speech Act from the Perspective of Force Dynamics Theory

Commitment speech acts play an important role in various fields, but compared to other speech acts, they have not yet received sufficient attention. In political discourse, the implementation frequency of commitment speech acts is quite high, while their usage characteristics, pragmatic strategies, and the influence of social domain factors still need to be explored. The correct implementation of commitment speech acts is helpful to achieve the purpose of communication and promote the success of communication. Therefore, based on Talmy’s force-dynamic theory, this paper collects relevant language materials of commitment speech acts contained in British Prime Minister’s “Brexit” political speech discourse, attempts to consider pragmatic factors on the basis of the force-dynamics model to construct force dynamics models about commitment speech acts for analysis. By analyzing the working mechanism between internal and external parameters in force dynamic schema under different promise strategies, this paper explores the action mode of “illocutionary force” in speech acts of commitment and the implementation path of commissives under the influence of social domain factors and other factors. This paper interprets commitment speech act from the cognitive perspective, expecting to broaden the research paradigm of commitment speech acts and provide ideas for future multi-dimensional study on speech act theory.

Optimizing Secure Communication in Distributed Corporate Networks through PPTP and IPSec VPN Protocols

In today’s industry, company’s activities are scattered in several locations and need internet for communication purposes. However, it will be dangerous if third-parties have access to their information. One of the solutions for securing information exchange is by using Virtual Private Network (VPN). The VPN protocols that will be used are Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) with the help of Internet Protocol Security (IPSec). These protocols are simulated in VirtualBox that has been previously installed with two Mikrotik routers and two Windows 7 operating systems. The PPTP and IPSec protocols are configured in both routers through Winbox software. For the computers, the IP addresses are configured along with iPerf software for bandwidth analysis. In this VPN simulation, both computers can communicate with each other and have no problem in accessing the internet. In PPTP’s network, the average bandwidth is 1.293 Mbits/sec. Meanwhile, in PPTP with IPSec’s network, the average bandwidth is 0.853 Mbits/sec. There is a slight difference considering that in PPTP, the data packets are only encapsulated. On the other hand, the data packets in IPSec protocol are both encapsulated and encrypted.

The Operational Logic of Culture-Based Short Video Marketing Empowering Brand Growth: The Case of Local Cultural Brands

Many academics studying marketing have shifted their focus to the scientific study of short videos as a result of the rapid growth of new media. Despite the abundance of research findings, the majority of academics concentrate on short videos for pure communication purposes without analyzing how traditional culture is used in short videos for propaganda or the integration process. In order to support the long-term growth of marketing, investigate additional opportunities presented by short-video cultural communication, and broaden and deepen the scope of marketing research, this article conducted a thorough analysis of the best examples of short-video cultural communication using the literature analysis method. It also examined the primary ways in which short-video culture-based marketing supports the development of a brand and integrated a broadly applicable brand communication path. According to the brand case study, the "Cao County" brand primarily uses "official marketing + self-media dissemination + live broadcasting with goods" to promote local culture and tourism in Cao County. In contrast, the brand "Chuanxiang Xiaomeier" achieves brand image unification and short video communication content innovation through the usage of "personal account promotion, brand identification system, and family communication context creation". This article ultimately finds that the core path of "dual matrix mode creation + brand image unification + cultural background empowerment" supplies a reference program for short video culture promotion. It does this by combining the common points and communication benefits of the two scenarios.

Structural analysis of lexical bundles in graduate students' research paper abstracts

Lexical bundles, as a recurrent sequence of words, are an important component of both spoken and written academic corpora, used both by professional academics and student writers in order to contribute to better structural organization, efficient communication, and well-established credibility. These expressions are formulaic and highly frequent, with rather clear discourse function and communicative purpose. The most frequently used structures of lexical bundles include NP-based, VP-based, and clause-based bundles. The aim of the paper is to explore the lexical bundles on a learner corpus of 448 abstracts written by non-native English speakers in English during their Masters studies. Structural analysis is performed in order to observe which structures students prefer and utilize while writing abstracts. The corpus was subdivided into two sub-corpora, depending on whether graduate students received any formal instruction on academic writing before publishing their abstracts, to explore whether instructions influence the use of lexical bundles with novice writers. The results offer the most common structures of lexical bundles that graduate students use, as well as the analysis of the types and diversity of lexical bundles used based on whether or not students had academic writing instructions.

The Impact of Social Media on Professional Learning among Undergraduate Dental Students: A Cross-sectional Study.

To explore the advantages and drawbacks of social media (SM) use in undergraduate dental students' education. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 202 undergraduate students at RAK College of Dental Sciences. A questionnaire of 15 questions explored demographic information, the nature of SM used by the participants, the use of SM for educational purposes, and the negative impacts of SM use. Frequencies, percentages, and significant variables were analyzed using Chi-square test at a 95% confidence level (CI) using statistical software [Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26.0]. Among the participants, 95% were SM users, and 80% had been using it for more than 5 years. 95% use SM regularly, and 70% spend 2-6 hours daily using SM. The primary purpose of using SM was entertainment and communication, mostly Instagram (82.38%), followed by Snapchat (58.49%) and YouTube (47.15%). Furthermore, SM is effective in obtaining new information (85%), and 90% consider clinical procedures on YouTube to be a helpful learning tool. Moreover, 75% of the participants recommended using SM as a learning tool, and 85% of the participants considered SM tutorial videos to be evidence-based. However, 70% of users are concerned about their addiction to using SM during lecture, laboratory, clinic, and examination periods, and 37% of them think spending time on SM can negatively affect their academic performance. Undergraduate dental students frequently use SM for entertainment, communication, and educational purposes. Nevertheless, the addiction to SM negatively affects the students learning progress. The use of SM has both a positive and negative impact on undergraduate dental education. Incorporating evidence-based learning components into SM platforms can be useful in dental education. Confidence Levels Measurement of Mobile Phone Selection Using a Multiattribute Decision-Making Approach with Unknown Attribute Weight Information Based on T-Spherical Fuzzy Aggregation Operators

Advancement in mobile phone (MP) technology has revolutionized the lifestyle. In recent years, we observed that MP technology had been involved in almost all aspects of life, such as communication purposes, e-commerce, mobile baking, and social media connectivity. So, it becomes a hot research topic to select the best MP that fulfills the desired feathers requirement. In this paper, the expert’s familiarity with the examined objects is factored into the initial judgments under the T-spherical fuzzy sets (T-SFSs) environment. The T-SFS is the extension of the picture fuzzy (PF) set (PFS), which gives wider scope for finding the most precise options than existing fuzzy frameworks. The multiattribute decision-making (MADM) is a common and valuable method for aggregating information. For MADM, various aggregation operators (AOs) have been created over the years. The article introduces the newly proposed approach T-spherical fuzzy (T-SF) confidence level weighted averaging T−SFWAc and T-SF confidence level weighted geometric T−SFWGc. Also, some desired properties of AOs are discussed, and the T-SF entropy measure is introduced for selecting the weight criteria. A MADM framework is introduced, on the behalf of proposed operators. The proposed MADM framework is applied to solve the real-life example of consumers’ preferences to show effectiveness and practicality. Lastly, the developed framework is set side by side with other prevailing approaches to demonstrate the superiority and significance of other existing AOs.

Digital Connectivity and Social Interaction among Secondary School Teachers in Nigeria

Digital technology has increasingly become popular and connectivity to digital platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, WhatsApp and so on for the purpose of education, research, communication and recreation has equally intensified. For teachers, the massive adoption and utilization of digital technologies poses both positive and negative implications for their professional roles and social interaction with colleagues. This systematic review examines digital technology and social interaction among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The review identified the determinants of social media usage among secondary school teachers in Nigeria, explored the pattern and extent of social media usage among secondary school teachers and assessed the gains and pains of social media utilization among secondary school teachers. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed in 1986 by Davis was adopted for the study. The study underscores the impact of digital platforms in improving secondary school teachers’ interaction by providing them avenues to socialize and establish virtual connections which may lead to future academic collaborations towards enhanced student learning, and teachers’ instructional practice. However, the review shows that digital technology platforms may influence the amount of time spent on face-to-face social interaction with colleagues and thus reduce their interaction and collaboration with each other. The paper concludes that over-commitment to digital technologies is inimical to social interaction among secondary school teachers, and thus recommends balancing of digital connectedness with face- to-face social interactions among teachers in order to achieve robust social and teaching experiences among them.

Underwater object detection and temporal signal detection in turbid water using 3D-integral imaging and deep learning.

Underwater scattering caused by suspended particles in the water severely degrades signal detection performance and poses significant challenges to the problem of object detection. This paper introduces an integrated dual-function deep learning-based underwater object detection and classification and temporal signal detection algorithm using three-dimensional (3D) integral imaging (InIm) under degraded conditions. The proposed system is an efficient object classification and temporal signal detection system for degraded environments such as turbidity and partial occlusion and also provides the object range in the scene. A camera array captures the underwater objects in the scene and the temporally encoded binary signals transmitted for the purpose of communication. The network is trained using a clear underwater scene without occlusion, whereas test data is collected in turbid water with partial occlusion. Reconstructed 3D data is the input to a You Look Only Once (YOLOv4) neural network for object detection and a convolutional neural network-based bidirectional long short-term memory network (CNN-BiLSTM) is used for temporal optical signal detection. Finally, the transmitted signal is decoded. In our experiments, 3D InIm provides better image reconstruction in a degraded environment over 2D sensing-based methods. Also, reconstructed 3D images segment out the object of interest from occlusions and background which improves the detection accuracy of the network with 3D InIm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that combines deep learning with 3D InIm for simultaneous and integrated underwater object detection and optical signal detection in degraded environments.
