Preparation of crystalline boron carbide by vapour phase reaction

Studies were carried out on the application of thermal decomposition of the mixture of pure boron trichloride and carbon tetrachloride in an atmosphere of hydrogen for preparation of pure crystalline boron carbide. Boron carbide crystals 3–4 mm long were obtained as a result of reactions occurring on the surface of heated graphite rods. The influence of the reaction conditions on the crystal growth process has been studied.
