Abstract AISI No. 630 is a precipitation hardening stainless steel which is used in a variety of applications requiring strength combined with corrosion resistance. It is recommended for chemical process equipment, valve parts, aircraft fittings, pump shafts, etc. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, tensile properties, and compressive strength as well as fracture toughness, creep, and fatigue. Pumping Wells with Electrical Submergible Pumps

Abstract This paper reviews the components of electrical submergible pumps with respect to field proven designs which have provided wider application in recent years. Installation procedure is described briefly to point out precautions necessary to obtain long service runs. Performance data for several oil and water supply wells are presented to show what can be expected in the way of operational and maintenance problems and expenses. And finally, the application of electrical submergible pumping is discussed with respect to economics and ultimate recovery. Introduction The electrical submergible pump has become a common method of lifting volumes of fluid ranging up to 20,000 B/D. Pump depth may exceed 12,000 ft. Many operators who are not familiar with its varied applications are reluctant to use it because its economic success is not fully understood. The results of several applications economically proven by Marathon Oil Co. in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming are presented herein to show that the submergible pump has its rightful place in the oil industry. Description of Equipment The many sizes and types of submergible pumps are too numerous to mention; but a typical installation designed to lift 4,000 bbl of fluid per day against a total head of 3,000 ft (water) is shown in Fig. 1. Components and costs for this installation are listed in Table 2. The motor located on the bottom is a 150 hp, 3 phase, 60 cycle, squirrel cage induction type which operates at 3.600 rpm. The protector located above the motor is used to prevent well fluids from entering the motor. Its housing is bolted to both the pump and motor and contains a splined shaft that connects the pump and motor shafts to provide a direct drive. JPT P. 819^

On the Relation between Cavitation Aspect in a Centrifugal Pump and Fall of Pump Head or Shaft Power Due to Cavitation : Studies of Cavitation Aspect and Suction Performance of Centrifugal Pumps, 3rd Report

In this report, the authers try to investigate the relation between the cavitation aspect in a centrifugal pump impeller and the fall of the pump head due to cavitation, by the method of dividing the decrease of the pump head due to cavitation into the decrease of the work-done of the impeller per unit weight for-rate of water and the increase of the head loss in the pump. First, the relations between the increase and decrease of the work-done of the impeller per unit weight flow-rate of waler and the region where the cavitation takes place are discussed and verified by the results of observation of the cavitation aspect. Next, the relations between the additional head loss due to cavitation and the cavitation aspect in the impeller are investigated. Further, the flow-rate where the reverse-flow occurs at the inlet of the impeller is investigated, using the nature that the additional head loss changes abruptly at this flow-rate.

Hard Facing. The Czechoslovakian Welding Research Institute, Bratislava, has developed a corrosion‐resistant, hard‐wearing alloy containing nickel, chromium, iron and boron which is said to be particularly useful as a hard‐welded facing for pump shafts, valve seats and plugs and similar equipment used in tough corrosive conditions. The boron is present in the form of nickel and chromium borides deposited evenly throughout the nickel‐chromium matrix.

Design and Materials for Reduced Pump Corrosion★

Abstract Of the pumps used in the chemical and allied industries, about 90 percent are of the centrifugal and diaphragm types. These pumps are required to handle corrosive liquids under conditions of high pressure and high temperature, expensive or hazardous liquids where leakage to atmosphere cannot be tolerated, liquids with solids in suspension, often of an abrasive nature, creating both a corrosion and abrasion problems and extremely corrosive liquids which may be radioactive. Diaphragm type pumps have certain advantages over centrifugal pumps for severe chemical applications because there is no shaft sealing problem, solids in suspension can be handled at relatively low velocities and a high degree of corrosion resistance can be obtained by the use of high alloy steels for the pump body and synthetic materials for diaphragms. Packingless pumps include the so-called canned-motor centrifugal pump in which the pump impeller is mounted on the same shaft as the rotor. Both the rotor and the stator are sealed from the fluid by corrosion resistant cans or shields and the rotor moves in the liquid being pumped. The rotor-impeller shaft is supported on sleeve type bearings submerged in the liquid pumped. Canned-motor pumps usually cannot be applied where the liquid contains solids because of close clearances and possibility of damage to bearings by abrasion. Designs giving longer service life in the conventional centrifugal pump usually include the following: Improved sealing devices where the pump shaft passes through the casing, new alloys or metals for the wetted end to provide a better corrosion resistance, improved elastomers, plastics and ceramics which permit lining entire pumps for a high degree of corrosion resistance. Improved shaft seals are discussed along with a study of new materials available for pump parts, and linings for pumps commonly used in chemical pumping service. 7.3

NITRALLOY 225

Abstract NITRALLOY 225 is a special alloy steel which can be nitrided, that is, surface hardened, without final quenching, by the action of ammonia gas at relatively low temperatures. It is used for pump shafts, bearing bushings, connecting rods, press rolls, steam valves, sreel stamping dies. and hot work and wire drawing dies. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. FOURTH OF JULY ACCIDENT: FOREIGN BODY THROUGH BRAIN

W. O., a youth, aged 18, was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital, July 4, 1929. He was brought to the emergency room, sitting in a wheel chair, an air pump plunger rod through his head. He was cold and clammy, his pulse slow and weak, with the appearance of severe shock, not unconscious, but unable to respond to questions. Immediate antishock treatment was started. The protruding shaft was cleansed with iodine and withdrawn, the patient was put to bed, and tetanus antitoxin was given. The pump shaft was five-sixteenths inch in diameter and 18 inches long. It had entered the skull through the medial and upper angle of the right orbit, without injury to the eyeball, and had protruded 6 inches in the midline at about the parietal and occipital articulations.
