Mathematical analysis (fast Fourier transform) of the ultrasonic echo pulsation curve in brain diseases.

The ultrasonic pulsation curve can be analysed by the computer. This technique has been useful for measuring haemodynamics. We detected prodromal signs of rebleeding from an intracranial aneurysm.

Ultrasonic imaging of arterial wall echoes

Abstract Ultrasonography of carotid arteries was attempted in healthy volunteers. As results had often been unsatisfactory in the past, an improved recording technique was used. Besides successful registrations, some unusual pulsation curves were recorded. Studies with a “pulsating” vessel model clarified the influence of angular and lateral transducer displacement. This influence could be reduced by using proper sensitivity adjustments.

Observation of fetal cardiac motion by M-mode ultrasonic cardiography

Fetal cardiac motion in the early and late stages of pregnancy was observed by means of ultrasonic cardiography (UCG). In the earliest case, a fetal pulsation curve was recorded inside an implanted ovum of the ninth week of gestation. Various comparative studies in neonates and men have demonstrated that the fetal UCG (FUCG) in late pregnancy does record mainly the motions of fetal cardiac valves and the cardiac septum. One of the most explicit patterns of fetal UCG is due to atrioventricular valve motion. This can be identified by comparing the phase relationships between FUCG and fetal cardiac Doppler signals. From an anatomical point of view, with a study of newborn UCG, mitral valve FUCG could be distinguished from the tricuspid one in relation to the position of the cardiac septum.

Intracranial echo pulsation in brain death, brain tumor and intracranial hypertension.

The rise time of the midline echo pulsation curve was shorter than normal in both the group of space taking lesions in the cranium and the group of cerebral arteriosclerosis. The rise time in the group of space occupying cerebral lesions was observed shorter than that in the group of cerebral arteriosclerosis.

Lung transplantation and pulmonary arteriolar circulation.

The pathophysiological basis of the increase in pulmonary vascular resistance associated to lung transplantation has not been indisputably clarified. The purpose of the present work was to study the effect of lung transplantation on the pulmonary circulation at the ar-teriolar level. Autotransplantation of the left lung was performed on 9 mongrel dogs. Pulmonary arteriolar pulsation was measured by cinedensitography before and after autotransplantation. The aortic, pulmonary arterial and venous and left atrial pressures, as well as ECG, were recorded simultaneously. A comparison was made between the simultaneous arteriolar pulsation curves of the transplanted left and intact right lungs. The operation produced a fall in the aortic and pulmonary arterial pressures and an increase in the pulse rate due to blood loss during the operation, but no notable pressure gradients in pulmonary arterial or venous anastomoses. COMPARISON BETWEEN PLEISTOCENE DEEP-SEA TEMPERATURES AND GLACIAL AND INTERGLACIAL EPISODES

The writer compares a Pleistocene glacial pulsation curve, based on interpretation of present knowledge of stratigraphy in midwestern North America, with temperature curves recently presented for deep-sea cores and for cores from desert basins. Interpretations agree, in general, for the time span covered by radiocarbon dates (Wisconsinan) but vary widely for the older part of the sequence.

A photoelectric recording set for pulsation curves of heart muscle cultures in vitro

The fact that the light quantity passing through hanging drop cultures of beating heart muscle fragments varies during the pulsations, offers the possibility of recording contraction curves by the photoelectric method. These curves, which are informative not only with regard to the frequency but also to the amplitude of the pulsations, show us immediately, when registered by a directly inscribing electrocardiograph, the result of an experimental influence and can be evaluated quantitatively. Such a photoelectric recording set, as it has been developed by the author, is described in this paper.
