There are many diversified deinking processes from a point of chemicals. This paper deals mainly with deinking effect on newspapers by alkaline solution of pine resin. The degree of deinking was estimated by the means of brightness measurement of deinked stuff.Resin acids and unsaponifiables are most effective in deinking of newspapers among the resin components which are fractionated by the usual way. These act as emulsifying agents in alkaline solution. This is also confirmed using pure levopimaric and abietic acids which belong to resin acids components. Similar deinking effect is shown by tall oil from sulfate waste liquor, as is anticipated from the results using pine resin. The use of alkaline pulp waste liquor for deinking, however, is superior to the use of alkaline resin solution alone. Therefore, it may be said that alkali lignin serves also for deinking of newspapers. The effect of alkali lignin during deinking merits further study and evaluation.
