Literary theory between contingency and contiguity: Yakov Druskin’s “Law of Heterogeneity”

The notion of chance epitomizes the limits and challenges of any theory’s struggle for control over itself as well as over its objects. Although contemporary literary theory has adapted its terminology and conceptual framework in line with the emergence of dynamic, “open forms” (Wölfflin in Principles of art history: The problem of the development of style in later art, Dover Publications Inc, New York, 1986), chance has nevertheless remained a highly problematic category to come to terms with. How can literary theory embrace chance? The paper approaches this question in three steps. First, it reconstructs three basic poetological propositions against whose backdrop contingency gains profile: the proposition of causal connections as a means to transform literature into a realm of necessity, the proposition of form as means to reduce arbitrariness, and the proposition of control as a means to protect the aesthetic object against the risks of external intrusions. The second part of the paper discusses a largely forgotten but highly relevant approach to the problem of contingency by Yakov Druskin. Druskin links the function of contingency in theoretical investigation with concepts of contiguity and proximity, first of all touch. His fragmentary sketch of a “law of heterogeneity” represents a paradoxical attempt to theorize contingent obstruction as a privileged systematic device to establish physical contact. The third part of this paper unpacks the implicit urge to rethink the traditions of theory formation itself through the “law of heterogeneity.” It argues that Druskin’s law introduces a different type of theory, one which is deeply indebted to the tactile, thus challenging the ocularcentrism of theoría.

A Pharmacoeconomic Comparison of Cost Variation among Hypolipidemic Drugs Available in Indian Market

Hyperlipidemia is a major cause of atherosclerotic coronary and cerebrovascular disorders affecting a large Indian population. The cost of various hypolipidemic drugs that are used for the prevention and treatment of these afflictions largely varies in the Indian pharmaceutical market. Our study aimed to evaluate the cost variation of different brands of hypolipidemic drugs and to compare the branded prices with their corresponding generic and ceiling prices. The costs of various drugs were procured from the latest issue of the “Drug Today” from October to November 2020 edition which is a directory of all the drugs available in India published quarterly every year by Lorina Publications (India) Inc. Cost ratio, percent cost variation, and daily defined dose (DDD) were calculated. We also compared the branded prices of drugs with their generic and ceiling prices available on the official website.A total of 9 single hypolipidemic drugs and 9 fixed-dose combinations (FDC) showed a wide per cent cost variation. The highest percentage of cost variation was atorvastatin 80 mg (3284%) whereas fenofibrate showed the lowest percent cost variation (0.91%). The cost ratio was also found higher in 2 from 6 drugs. Among FDCs, atorvastatin 10mg + ezetimibe 10 mg (484%) showed a higher cost variation and rosuvastatin 20 mg + fenofibrate 160mg (0.6%) showed a minimum variation. The maximum cost variation from branded prices compared to generic prices was found in simvastatin 20 mg (544%) and atorvastatin 10 mg (155%). In summary, our study showed a wide variation in the cost of hypolipidemic drugs available in the Indian market which provides an insight to the prescriber, gives drug price control authorities to minimize the financial burden on the patient, and improves their compliance

Different versions of assessment for learning in the subject of physical education

ABSTRACTBackground: Assessment for learning (AfL) is now marketed across the Western world as a key to an improved goal attainment in most school subjects. The concept has also attracted increased interest in the international research field of physical education (PE) in recent years. According to (Chan, K., P. J. Hay, and R. Tinning. 2011. “Understanding the Pedagogic Discourse of Assessment in Physical Education.” Asia-Pacific Journal of Health, Sport and Physical Education 2 (1): 3–18) assessment both influences the teaching and learning process and defines its product, which is referred to as the ‘backwash effect’. Contrasting versions of AfL will therefore have different consequences, regarding the constitution of teacher and student subjectivities as well as characteristics of the subject content. These consequences can be understood in terms of didactics, which in a European research tradition focuses on the relationship between teacher, student and subject content (Hudson, B., and M. A. Meyer, eds. 2011. Beyond Fragmentation: Didactics, Learning and Teaching in Europe. Opladen and Farmington Hills: Barbara Budrich Publishers).Purpose and research question: The purpose of the study is to identify teacher and student subjectivities as well as subject content, constituted through different versions of AfL in school PE. The identification of the different versions of AfL and the relations established through each of them is facilitated by the research question: ‘What is performed and produced in the formative assessment practice of PE?’ The findings are then discussed on the basis of the question: ‘Assessment for what learning?’Methods: In order to answer the research question, a mixed method of lesson observations and semi-structured interviews was used (cf. Patton, M. Q. 2002. Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods. 3rd ed. Thousand Oaks, California: Sage Publications Inc). Thirteen PE lessons were observed at two different upper secondary schools, involving four classes attaining both vocational and pre-university programmes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 of the students and their two male PE teachers. The empirical material consisted of field notes and transcriptions of the interviews, with an emphasis on the latter. In the first step of the analysis the material was categorised by means of the five key strategies of AfL (Wiliam, D. 2011. “What is Assessment for Learning?” Studies in Educational Evaluation 37: 3–14. Elsevier), in order to identify different ways of realising the concept in the subject of PE. The second step was a combination of a performativity (Ball, S. J. 2003. “The Teacher's Soul and the Terrors of Performativity.” Journal of Education Policy 18 (2): 215–228) and a didactic (Hudson, B. 2002. “Holding Complexity and Searching for Meaning: Teaching as Reflective Practice.” Journal of Curriculum Studies 34 (1): 43–57) analysis, which clarified the relations established under different circumstances in the formative assessment practice.Findings: The findings highlight five versions of AfL in PE, named after their most prominent features or functions, AfL as: (i) Empowerment, (ii) Physical Activation, (iii) Constructive Alignment, (iv) Grade Generation, (v) Negotiation. ‘Among the products of discursive practices are the very persons who engage in them’ (Davies, B., and R. Harré. 2001. “Positioning: The Discursive Production of Selves.” In Discourse Theory and Practice, edited by M. Wetherell, S. Taylor, and S. J. Yates. London: Sage, 263). Accordingly, different teacher and student subjectivities as well as characteristics of the subject content are constituted in each of these fabrications.Conclusions: The so-called ‘backwash effect’ (Torrance, H. 2012. “Formative Assessment at the Crossroads: Conformative, Deformative and Transformative Assessment.” Oxford Review of Education 38 (3): 323–342. London: Routledge) implies that the contrasting versions of AfL promote different kinds of learning, such as: (i) increased autonomy, (ii) participation in a community of practice, (iii) acquisition of prescribed abilities, (iv) criteria compliance, (v) group development. However, the big idea of AfL is to adapt the teaching to the students and not the students to the standards.

Reference materials for thermal transport properties measurements

Accurate knowledge of thermal properties, particularly thermal conductivity and its allied properties, is essential for successful modeling, design, operation and economics of any process or system involving transmission of heat. In theory, the measurement of thermal conductivity is often viewed as a simple task but in practice it proves more complex and difficult, particularly when required now to have acceptable high precision levels over a broad range of temperature, above and below room ambient. For such purposes, depending on the type and form of specimen, the thermal conductivity (conductance) of a material, composite or system, covers an approximate very broad range of six orders of magnitude. Consequently, numerous different standard test methods have been developed, and their adequate verification is highly dependent on the use of reference materials. The present paper is based on a previous comprehensive review (Tye in Invited lectures. In: Gaal DS, Gaal PS (eds) Thermal conductivity 30 thermal expansion 18, chap 2. DEStech Publications Inc, Lancaster, PA, 2010) presented to a specialist audience at a conference having direct interests in quantitative thermal property measurements. It contained detailed up-to-date information, on the necessary requirements of test methods, documents and a discussion on the development, and use of the limited number and various types and forms of reference materials (artifacts), then available to support the measurements. Since that time, there has been a significant increase in the use of various newer methods, devoted especially to small specimens; however, little or no work has been carried out to increase the numbers and types of reference materials required for their verification. Newer techniques include one using a modification of the transient plane source technique, used by many of the perceived present audience having similar but differing requirements in qualitative measurement. The present discussion now concentrates more on these developments, availability and use and the need for additional reference materials. Specific emphasis is placed on the driving forces and difficulties involved in assembling a solution for the many current and future requirements. Differences in the type and use of available reference materials are described with examples, together with illustrations both of their correct use and misuse, or abuse that has, or may occur. Applications, where requirements for new standards are considered, and suggestions made to undertake a comprehensive study to develop additional relevant references and to improve the efficacy and precision of the newer methods.

Axisymmetric transient waves in transversely isotropic half-space

A transversely isotropic material in the sense of Green is considered. Using a series of potential functions proposed in [Eskandari-Ghadi M. A complete solution of the wave equations for transversely isotropic media. J Elasticity 2005; 81:1–19], the solutions of the transient wave equations within a half-space under surface load are obtained in the Laplace–Hankel domain for axisymmetric problems. The solutions are investigated in detail in the special case of a surface point force pulse varying with time as Heaviside function. Using Cagniard–De Hoop method, the inverse Laplace transform and inverse Hankel transform of the solutions are then obtained in the form of integrals with finite limits. For validity of the analytical results, the final formulations for surface waves are degenerated for an isotropic material and compared with the existing formulation obtained by Pekeris [The seismic surface pulse. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1955;41:469–80], to show that they are exactly the same. The numerical evaluations of the integrals for some transversely isotropic materials as well as an isotropic one are obtained.
