Abstract

Buffalo grass, Buchloë dactyloides Engelm., is a North American native short-grass, sod-forming, shade-intolerant perennial. The genus name comes from the Greek rendering of the common name: boubalos, buffalo and chloë, grass (synonymous with Bulbilis dactyloides Raf.). 1 Hitchcock A.S. It is dominant over large areas of the upland Great Plains referred to as “short-grass prairie.” 1 Hitchcock A.S. Manual of the Grasses of the United States. in: 2nd Ed.
