Tactical Urbanism as a Strategy For the Recovery of Public Space in the El Churo Community – Pedernales

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of tactical urbanism as a tool to recover and improve public space in urban areas, with a special focus on identifying sustainable and durable materials for interventions. Theoretical Framework: Tactical urbanism is based on a series of concepts and theories that promote citizen participation, sustainability, and adaptability in the transformation of public space. Theories such as participatory planning and tactical urban design support the implementation of small-scale, low-cost, and rapid interventions. Method: With the aim of motivating the El Churo community through art to improve the public space of the sidewalk on the community boardwalk as a strategic and tourist space, an intervention was carried out with architecture students under a qualitative methodology. Results and Discussion: Tactical urbanism is an important part of society and human well-being, since from its origins it was the key to uniting groups with many differences but who sought a common good. Citizenship is aware of the importance of participating in the processes of building their own city. Implications of the Research: The research on tactical urbanism in El Churo reveals a great potential to transform local communities and promote sustainable development. By empowering citizens to actively participate in the creation of their public spaces, this methodology proves to be an effective tool to improve quality of life, strengthen social fabric, and promote environmental sustainability. Originality/Value: The research on tactical urbanism in El Churo stands out for its originality by focusing on a rural coastal community, an uncommon context for this type of study. Its value lies in demonstrating how tactical urbanism can adapt to local realities and empower specific communities. By combining participatory approaches with the use of local materials and techniques, this research not only contributes to the academic knowledge of tactical urbanism but also offers a replicable model for other communities. Its social impact, by improving quality of life and strengthening the community fabric, and its contribution to sustainability position it as a pioneering research in the field.

Enhancing Outdoor Thermal Comfort with Shade-giving Trees in Humid Tropical Public Spaces: A Case Study of Alun-alun Bandung

Abstract Public spaces in urban areas function as places for visitors to socialize. These spaces are vital to the success of urban public activities. Adjustments to the microclimate in outdoor spaces have a significant impact on the thermal comfort of visitors. This research aims to assess visitors’ level of thermal comfort experienced in public areas, specifically in Alun-alun Kota Bandung and its surroundings. The site is divided into four distinct locations: (1) the central area; (2) the tree-shaded area; (3) the building-shaded area; and (4) the area with small vegetation. This study uses tools and simulation to analyze the relationship between outdoor activities and thermal comfort in its existing public space using quantitative methods. The study’s findings show that, while respondent responses vary across typologies, an analysis of the ENVI-met simulation reveals that they are nearly identical, indicating that it is generally warm. Furthermore, the slightly cool (-1 > PMV > -0.5) and neutral (-0.5 > PMV > 0.5) categories in typologies 2 and 4 produce distinct results. More shade-giving trees and the use of environmentally friendly materials that don’t reflect sunlight are two suggestions for enhancing the microclimate conditions for pedestrians’ thermal comfort in Alun-alun Kota Bandung.

Using Space Syntax in Close Interaction Analysis between the Elderly: Towards a Healthier Urban Environment

Population aging has become an issue that the world should to face together. Public spaces in urban areas play an important role in stimulating social interactions for the elderly, especially close social interactions. Although a volume of studies have focused on the health of the elderly and the shaping of urban space, they have neglected the need for close social behavior of the elderly group. This analysis addresses the question: What are the principles to improve public space qualities which facilitate age-friendly social interactions for the elderly? Blind-dating activities in Beijing City work as an example of close social interactions between the elderly. Methods include a case study in Beijing, field survey, and Space Syntax with related tools. The survey took place from 1 July to 30 September 2022. Around 102 elderly men and 84 women aging from 55 to 75 participated in the survey process. Results indicate that the close social interaction can positively comfort the elderly’s physical and psychological situations. It could be a path for the single elderly group meet a partner, make new friends, and establish new social networks. Consequently, three principles, including obtaining the safety of public space, keeping greenery in the social environment, and providing suitable space for close social interactions are proposed towards age-friendly urban areas. These support the regeneration of the elderly’s social life and stimulate a chasing of happy later lives.

Social Interaction in Public Spaces and Well-Being among Elderly Women: Towards Age-Friendly Urban Environments.

The world’s population is aging and becoming more urbanized. Public space in urban areas is vital for improving the health of the elderly by stimulating social interaction. Many urban design projects are advertised as age-friendly but ignore the real needs of the elderly, especially elderly women, for social interaction in urban public spaces. Insufficient attention is paid to the physical and psychological characteristics of elderly women when shaping public space. This analysis addresses the question: What are the qualities of urban spaces which facilitate health-improving social interaction for elderly women? Methods include a case study in Beijing, field investigation, mapping, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. The survey was carried out in April 2021, and concerned 240 women aged 55–75 years. Results indicate that the social interactions of older women relate to both their physical and psychological situations. Public spaces can positively impact the psychological well-being and social participation of elderly women. Conclusions include insights regarding the relationship between social interaction and well-being among elderly women, as well as proposing a series of principles for shaping public spaces for an age-friendly urban environment.

Road Intersection as a Public Space and Venue for Advertisements in an Urban Setting

Advertising media uses a lot of public space as a place to advertise which can reduce the function of public space in urban areas. This study aims to determine the use of urban space as a medium for outdoor advertising that interrupts and reduces the function of space. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive data analysis methods. The four intersections on Jalan Raya Dalung have interrupted the function of public spaces, including functions as pedestrians (pedestrian paths), telajakan (as an element of reforestation), protecting the environment, and as borders. Inappropriate placement of advertising media creates a chaotic impression and visual chaos.

Design possibilities of leftover spaces as a pocket park in relation to planting enclosure

Despite the focus on (large parks) green public spaces in urban areas, mini-parks have been disregarded, especially the way they should be designed based on people’s aesthetic preferences, in order to fulfill societal potential. Having used 25 computer-generated pocket park (PP) scenes with various levels of enclosure based on planting, this study seeks to investigate public opinion on three factors: coherence, legibility, and the refuge. Since vacant lands inherently receive limited budgets, design practices must develop innovative ways to implement the projects. Residents from Tehran, Iran (n = 318) participated in a visual online questionnaire depicting five main types for the permeability of enclosure in small leftover spaces, which had the possibility to change into PP. They were asked to assess the coherence, legibility, refuge, and select the types of activities they could imagine in each park. This study adopted a descriptive-analytical method. The results were evaluated using the chi-square test and are as follows: (1) In terms of all five types, participants rated the lowest for refuge in visually open and physically open scenes. (2) If the visual and physical scenes are enclosed, participants perceive the legibility to be higher compared to open scenes. (3) In visually open scenes, there are no significant differences in the participants’ sense of coherence even though the physical enclosure is changed. (4) Due to the investigation of spatial configurations of PP, when compared to other variables (coherence and legibility), it is demonstrated that enclosure will be more significant in terms of refuge.

Physical development of public spaces was one of the priority programs during the Molen-Sopian administration as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Pangkalpinang for the period 2018-2023. The availability of public space in urban areas refers to the provisions for the distribution of the proportion of Green Open Space (RTH), namely 20% Public Green Open Space (RTH) and 10% Private Green Open Space (RTH). The City Government of Pangkalpinang is faced with the dynamics of urban politics which are colored by pros and cons issues related to the development of public spaces in Pangkalpinang City. This study aims to determine the role of the Pangkalpinang City government in striving for the arrangement and management of public space in the Pangkalpinang City area as well as exploring the factors that influence the implementation process. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of this study indicate that the availability of public space in the form of Green Open Space (RTH) in Pangkalpinang City has not reached the minimum target required in accordance with the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW), which is 20% of the city area. The role of the Pangkalpinang City government in striving for the arrangement and management of public spaces in Pangkalpinang City includes regulators, facilitators, executors and dynamists. In the process of structuring and managing this public space, there are also three factors that influence, namely political will, the role of third parties, and budget availability.

FENOMENA DINAMIKA KEPUBLIKAN DALAM HIRARKI RUANG KAWASAN PUBLIK KOTA

The public area of the city in general is currently experiencing rapid development due to economic growth and the influence of globalization. The public space is formed based on economic, social, political cultural interests, as well as developments and changes that occur in the current public space, making it limited and cannot be accessed optimally by the wider community. This is caused by the hierarchy of public spaces that are formed based on the functions that surround them. The purpose of this study is to reveal the phenomenon of public hierarchy in urban space in the context of its changes. This research is descriptive-analytical and based on theoretical and empirical elaboration. This approach is used to read public spaces in urban areas to get a reference for the interpretation of theoretical relationships from an empirical condition.

Factors affecting orderly parking of dockless shared bicycles: an exploratory study

ABSTRACT As dockless shared bicycles (DSB) have become more commonplace, disorderly parking behaviour has attracted public concern and infringes upon public spaces in urban areas. The current research explored factors that affect users’ decisions regarding where to park their DSB in order to examine the importance of intrinsic and extrinsic factors suggested to influence parking decisions. Following a literature review and focus group study, a survey instrument measuring social demographics, travel behaviour, parking behaviour, planned behaviour and motivation for prosocial behaviour consisting of 20 items was developed and deployed. Using ordered logit model estimation, users’ intentions for orderly parking of DSB was measured and influential factors enhancing or limiting intention were identified. The lack of a shared definition of ‘orderly parking’ is the most noteworthy factor affecting DSB parking. The empirical findings confirm the significant role played by social norms, reciprocity, communication responsibility and institutional environment in regulating and influencing proper DSB parking behaviour and suggest that these factors may represent a more important aspect to be accounted for than financial incentives.

EVEKTIFITAS PEMANFAATAN RUANG TERBUKA PUBLIK DI TAMAN SULTAN HASANUDDIN GOWA

The importance of the existence of Green Open Space (RTH) in urban areas has begun to be felt by the community at this time. By looking at the phenomenon of the many public open spaces that are changing their faces into new high-rise buildings and housing, it has encouraged the enthusiasm of some people to restore the role of public space in urban areas. Various environmentalists took part, including the government through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, various communities including the implementers of the 2015 world habitat day activity (HHD2015) and writers, to voice the urgency of public space and share ideas and strategies for encourage the realization of public space for all communities. Sultan Hasanuddin Park is a park located in Gowa Regency, but it is not passed by public transportation. Sultan Hasanuddin Park also has several supporting facilities but it does not function properly and some have been damaged. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, which describes a phenomenon, events and conditions that exist. This study aims to Analyze the pattern of spatial use in Sultan Hasanuddin Park, Identify factors influencing the effectiveness of the utilization of the Sultan Hasanuddin Makassar Park facility and Analyze the utilization of supporting facilities for Sultan Hasanuddin Park as a public open space. The results showed that the Sultan Hasanuddin Park did not function properly, due to the lack of shade in the seating area, so that the upholders sat in a shaded area and not in the proper seat. The absence of a clear parking area so that the end of the park in the park and the absence of public bins so that one corner of the park used as public TPU. Lack of care / janitors who take care of the park so that plants and grasses that exist in the garden are not maintained.

LANSKAP LINGUISTIK KOTA MEDAN: KAJIAN ONOMASTIKA, SEMIOTIKA, DAN SPASIAL

Language is a marker of social change that occurs in society. Prescriptivism, which is more glorifying language that is considered more modern. Linguistic landscape views urban as text. The meaning is, because language is widely used in public spaces in urban areas. Linguistic landscape is the presence of language between space and place. An interdisciplinary study of the presence of various language issues that interact with other languages in the public sphere. This study describes the phenomenon of linguistic landscape in Medan in the categories of onomastics, semiotics and spatial. The method used, namely qualitative research methods. The research threat uses the linguistic landscape theory of the Landry & Bourhis (1997) model. The research findings are the use of foreign languages that dominate the landscape in Medan City. Indonesian is no longer the sole authority in a region. Found onomastical, semiotic, and spatial aspects in the linguistic landscape in the city of Medan.

Managing Sociocultural Sustainability in Public Heritage Spaces

ABSTRACT The preservation of built and living culture is one of the essential goals when implementing a management plan for a heritage site or a cultural tourist attraction. Tangible culture is often the main attractant for tourists, and creates the image of said destination. This is especially true with heritage sites and public spaces in urban areas, as urban areas are more dependent on their cultural monuments to attract tourists and generate income. Park Güell has become a fundamental part of the Barcelona image. The current arrival of a huge number of annual visitors in Barcelona has brought with it the need to better manage the city’s resources from a sustainability standpoint. The access to Park Güell was regulated in October 2013 to help alleviate some of the pressure the surrounding area was receiving. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to assess how Park Güell manages its sociocultural sustainability.

Online Taxi bike To Create Informal Public Spaces in Urban Areas

The changes associated with digitalization, are rapidly messing up the old pattern, leading to the creation of a new system. The expansion of technological applications such as Uber or Gojek, leads to the development of a unique transportation model thereby, creating informal parking spaces for online taxi bike drivers. These spaces are self-formed, random, not formally planned, and located at strategic locations to suit the needs of users. In order to explore the phenomenon of informal public space, this research conducts the following: 1) Traces online taxi bike; 2) Identifies its potentials and problems; 3) Analyses the spatial pattern; and 4) Figures out the pattern and its impact. Data was obtained by direct observation in Diponegoro University, Tembalang, Semarang. This research therefore aims to understand the existing conditions faced by the new paradigms in Indonesia. The result is a spatial interaction pattern of informal space due to online taxi bike activities, such as T-junction, and under trees spot, with digital technology used to scrub the problems associated with driving forces.

Utilization of the public space in gelanggang olahraga area H. Agus Salim Padang

Public space is the most important component in urban spatial planning. Public space can be interpreted as a place or space that can be accessed or utilized by all communities or communities can gather for the same purpose. With the existence of public space the community can establish direct social interaction. So public spaces in urban areas can provide physical and psychological benefits to users. The research approach used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The selection of informants in this study used purposive sampling. The data collection techniques and tools used in three ways are nonparticipant observation, interviews and documentation. To achieve the validity of the research data using triangulation techniques. Meanwhile the data analysis technique uses technical analysis of Miles and Huberman data, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results of this study can be concluded (1) Strategic location, (2) Easy access, (3) areas that have attraction, (4) Weak social control.

The Usage and Perception of Pedestrian Zones in Lithuanian Cities: Multiple Criteria and Comparative Analysis

As pedestrian zones are public spaces in urban areas, they are important in terms of meeting people’s needs. However, it is worth noting that attention should be paid not only to the development of the physical infrastructure, but also to a sustainable balance between the socio-economic and environmental aspects. To guide urban planning and management initiatives towards more sustainable patterns, it is essential to re-examine the already existing characteristics of cities, establishing how they are used and perceived by inhabitants. The present research suggests environmental, economic and social criteria that determine a greater vitality of pedestrian zones in cities and better life quality for the inhabitants. A questionnaire survey was used to assess common attitudes regarding the research topic in major cities in Lithuania. The multiple criteria decision-making COPRAS (COmplex PRoportional ASsessment) method was used for the formation of a priority queue. The research results showed the attitudes of inhabitants towards pedestrian zones in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. The inhabitants of these three cities regarded social and environmental criteria groups as the most significant. Contrary to what was expected and anticipated, respondents do not consider economic criteria as playing a key role in the sustainable preservation and development of pedestrian zones.

Esta investigación analiza acciones particulares de ciudadanías comunicativas de la sociedad civil: maniobras desarrolladas en medio de la contienda por la apropiación del espacio público en zonas urbanas que han padecido altos índices de violencia en la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia. Principalmente, esta pesquisa indaga por cómo diversas acciones de ciudadanías comunicativas generan procesos de construcción de memoria colectiva, inclusión social, reconocimiento de las diferencias y reclamación de derechos humanos por parte de públicos subalternos en la arena pública.

The Activities of Local Governments in the Revitalization of Public Space in Bulgaria and Poland

Abstract The research discussed in the article focuses on public space in urban areas and revitalization activities carried out by local governments. The goals of the paper are to identify the conditions and opportunities for the development of public space by local governments of Bulgaria and Poland, to find regularities (similarities and differences) and to assess the actions taken. The specific objective is to illustrate the process of planning and managing selected large revitalization investments in urban public spaces in Bulgaria and Poland. The research methods used comprise the analysis of literature, including official documents and acts of law and case studies. The paper analyzes the conditions and manifestations of activities taken by local governments regarding investment in public space (development and revitalization of public space programs and investing in real estate) in Bulgaria and Poland, using examples from selected cities. The authors selected two comparable urban areas: Varna in Bulgaria and Poznań in Poland, chosen intentionally due to the similarity of the two post-socialist bloc countries and the availability of information. Bulgarian and Polish state law and various acts of local law were analyzed. The experimental part of the publication introduces case studies of investments in the revitalization of real estate in public space managed by the local governments. It shows examples of projects which are relevant to the development of the cities under study.

Formation of new property rights on government land through informal co-management: Case studies on countryside guerilla gardening

Extant research on guerilla gardening, defined as the unauthorized cultivation of land belonging to another, has hitherto focused on public space in urban areas, neglecting those that occur in rural settings. This rural land policy study examines a form of guerilla gardening in the countryside in Hong Kong, carried out by specific walker communities who routinely do early morning walks. Most of the gardens they have cultivated have become part of country park protected areas. This study identifies five phases of land use status evolution undergone by these morning walkers’ gardens (MWG), from the time the phenomenon of guerilla gardening in the countryside began in the 1960s to recent times, illustrating the role of land use change in enabling squatters with a degree of property rights by way of informal land resource co-management. Through the three case studies presented in this article, it is argued that MWGs can represent the emergence of incipient forms of natural resource co-management in Hong Kong. This study emphasizes the important role of resource user leadership in enhancing the land use value of land in itself and for the wider community. Some recommendations are provided to enhance resource user participation in land resource management.
