Edina Goes Green Part I: A Model for Low-input Lawn Care Community Education

A yearlong community education project was conducted in Edina, Minn., to teach residents about low-input lawn care techniques. Informational articles, a World Wide Web (Web) page, public seminar, and demonstration sites were the four major strategies employed by the project. Each of these teaching methods had a specific objective for influencing the lawn care knowledge and practices of Edina residents. Feedback from surveys at the completion of the project showed that printed articles had the highest familiarity. Based on these results, recommendations are given for other communities to implement low-input lawn care education programs.

Community, Demagogues and the South Pacific News Media

On 19 October 1995, the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea issued the terms of reference for a Constitutional Review Committee's (CRC) Subcommittee on Media Accountability: to examine ‘whether changes need to be made to ensure that, while freedom of the press is maintained, owners, editors and journalists of all elements of the media are accountable and that persons aggrieved by media abuses have reasonable redress’. The CRC held a public seminar in January 1996 to explore the issues and the Media Council of Papua blew Guinea held a ‘freedom at the crossroads’ seminar the following month. Public responses were overwhelmingly in favour of the traditional ‘free’ press in Papua New Guinea, as guaranteed under Section 46 of the Constitution. The report of the Subcommittee on Media Accountability to Parliament in June 1996 essentially came to the same conclusion. However, the CRC introduced three draft media laws in November which introduced a controversial system involving a Media Commission, registration of journalists, licensing of media organisations and serious penalties for transgressors. The proposed legislation was widely condemned and was eventually shelved in February 1997, A general view is that the media debate was manipulated by a small group of politicians out of self-interest. This paper examines the developments in the context of the erosion of the news media and free expression in the South Pacific generally.

PERSUASIVE COMMUNICATION AND SINGAPORE ENTREPRENEURS

ABSTRACT Persuasive communication may be one of the least acknowledged, but most vital, entrepreneurial skills. This exploratory study seeks to determine what importance entrepreneurs from Singapore assign to persuasive communication and how they would access their own communication skills. A survey questionnaire was administered to 37 entrepreneurs that attended a public seminar. The research will examine the following arenas where persuasive communication might be considered most relevant: (I) raising seed capital among friends and relatives, (2) seeking bank loans, (3) seeking supplier credit, (4) team building and employee recruitment, (5) seeking governmental approval, (6) market entry, (7) selling and promotion, and (8) international business activity. The entrepreneur's perception of the importance of persuasive communication in each of these and other possible areas will be assessed along with their self-assessment of their communication performance. Is Shakespeare Still Our Contemporary?

In 1961 the Polish critic Jan Kott published a collection of essays on Shakespeare that became known in English as Shakespeare Our Contemporary. Although it was often reviled by academic critics in Britain and North America, that volume has had more impact on the production of Shakespeare in the twentieth century than any book of criticism before or since. Twenty-five years after its publication, the International Association of Theatre Critics held a public seminar at the Young Vic in London “to celebrate the … anniversary,” “to honour Jan Kott … and also in a friendly way to take him to task.” Is Shakespeare Still Our Contemporary? is the proceedings of that seminar, transcribed and edited by John Elsom.

The public seminar as a nutrition education approach: An evaluation

A health seminar seemed to modify knowledge, attitudes, and reported behavior of a self-selected audience which was already well informed and motivated to change. Therefore, the health seminar appears to be a useful educational approach in this context. The question remains: How can those who are neither informed nor motivated be reached? This study suggests that the public seminar may not be an efficient vehicle for this purpose.

Seminar on Regional Cooperation in Africa: prospects and problems

The eighth inter-African public administration seminar, sponsored jointly by the Government of Liberia and the Ford Foundation, was attended by 37 leading civil servants from English-speaking Africa, as well as by observers from I.D.E.P., C.A.F.R.A.D., and U.N. E.C.A.President Tubman delivered the keynote address, in which he recognised the need for regional economic co-operation, urged the investigation of the problems and difficulties on the way, and stressed the essential role of civil servants in bringing about such co-operation. In the discussion that followed many participants expressed the view that goals and objectives must be denned as carefully and realistically as possible if both short- and long-term results are to be achieved. It would also be important to take into account the current level of development in African countries.
