Spirituality and the psychological impact of unemployment: Personality characteristics, loneliness and depressive symptomatology

The purpose of this research is to explore spirituality in relation to the negative impacts of unemployment, such as depressive symptomatology and loneliness in connection with the five factor personality model. In particular, we wanted to investigate whether the unemployed individuals with higher levels of spirituality have lower depressive symptomatology and loneliness, but also to examine how these variables are related to personality factors. Our sample consisted of 133 unemployed individuals who completed the NEO-Five Factor Inventory, the Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments (ASPIRES), the UCLA loneliness scale and the Questionnaire of self evaluated Depressive Symptomatology. The results showed that there was no significant association between depressive symptomatology and spirituality, while concerning loneliness and spirituality, a significant negative correlation was found, only in relation to the spirituality dimension of universality. Significant correlations were also shown between spirituality and personality factors, such as openness to experience and agreeableness, whilst significant correlations arose between personality factors and the three dimensions of spirituality. Finally, results are discussed.

Effects of unemployment rural youth on rural development (ORIC-13-03)

Rural youth in Pakistan play very significant character in the political, economic, rural development and social change. The research work is the socio-psychological effects on rural development in the aspect of unemployment on the personality of jobless youth in Tehsil Jaranwala, District Faisalabad-Pakistan. A multistage sampling technique was applied for data collection. At the 2nd stage, two union councils were randomly selected from selected tehsil and at the 3rd stage; two villages were randomly selected from selected union councils. Total numbers of 120 respondents were interviewed from different villages. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data for drawing conclusion(s). Majority of the respondents agreed that unemployment leads to poor mental health, drug addiction, corruption, rural development, crime, dishonesty, depression and anxiety. A highly significant association was found between family income of the respondents and psychological impact of unemployment. Key words: Unemployment, rural development, Pakistan.

Repercusiones psicológicas del desempleo: Efectos colaterales de la crisis en el sector de la construcción

As a result of the global financial crisis, the unemployment rate in Spain has reached historic proportions. In this regard, this study examines the psychological impact of unemployment on workers who have lost their jobs as a result of the crisis. We compared the psychological well-being of a sample of workers in the construction sector, classified into four different groups according to their employment status: unemployed (n = 57), temporary workers (n = 54), permanent workers (n = 52), and self-employed (n = 56). The results of the ANOVA show that unemployed people experience greater psychological distress than workers who keep their jobs, although the only statistically significant differences were found between unemployed and temporary workers. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

Social psychology in Australia: Past and present

This paper reviews the development of social psychology in Australia from its early beginnings, through post‐World War II, to the current situation. Social psychology became an integral part of the psychology curriculum after the Second World War, with a strong emphasis at the University of Melbourne. It received an impetus in the 1960s with the creation of Flinders, Macquarie, and La Trobe universities. Currently, teaching and research in social psychology is widespread, with major centres at the Universities of Queensland and New South Wales, and at the Australian National University, but with universities such as Flinders, Macquarie, and Melbourne continuing to contribute. In general, social psychologists in Australia have not deliberately set out to develop a distinctive local identity. Instead, they have a strong international focus and are eclectic in their interests, drawing on theories and methodologies from major centres in North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe. They have made distinctive contributions in many areas, including research on acculturation, achievement motivation, the psychological impact of unemployment, values, expectancy–value theory, role theory, social identity and self‐categorization theory, deservingness, gender studies and household work, close relationships, decision‐making, social cognition, ostracism, and the effects of mood. Uniquely, Australian topics include research on tall poppies or high achievers, and on the cultural cringe. Social psychologists in Australia have also been active in industrial/organizational research and in cross‐cultural research, but there is little social psychological research involving the indigenous Australian population. Australian contributions to social psychology are not always recognized, partly because of Australia's distance from the major centres. However, social psychologists in Australia now have their own association, the Society of Australasian Social Psychologists (SASP), offer symposia and special academic appointments that draw international visitors, and compensate for the tyranny of distance by travelling widely and using the internet. Social psychology is now one of the strongest areas of Australian psychology internationally.

Economic deprivation and the psychological impact of unemployment

This article presents a selective review of theory and research that considers the effects of financial hardship and economic deprivation on unemployed individuals and their families. Research from the 1930s and studies dealing with contemporary unemployment are discussed. The results of further analysis of two previously reported Flinders studies are presented. It is concluded that financial hardship and economic deprivation set limits to the extent to which the unemployed person can fulfil needs and values and move towards important future goals. The effects of both economic variables and psychological variables on the psychological wellbeing and life satisfaction of unemployed people may be related to motivational theories that take into account person variables such as needs, values, and expectations, and environmental variables that hinder or facilitate both the satisfaction of basic motives and goal-directed behaviour.

The psychological impact of unemployment and unsatisfactory employment in young men and women: Longitudinal and cross‐sectional data

Data are presented from the seventh wave of a longitudinal study of school-leavers that commenced in 1980. Four groups were compared: satisfied employed, dissatisfied employed, unemployed and full-time tertiary students. The groups differed initially with respect to only one background variable, teacher-rated academic potential, and did not differ on any of the psychological measures of well-being. In general, the unemployed and dissatisfied employed groups displayed poorer psychological well-being than the satisfied employed and student groups on a range of measures. The longitudinal data suggested that this was because the two disadvantaged groups showed smaller improvements than the others, rather than any deterioration. The results also suggested that for the males unemployment was worse than unsatisfactory employment, but that for the females unsatisfactory employment was worse than unemployment.

Self-Esteem and the Psychological Impact of Unemployment

The study examines the relationship between employment status and self-esteem among highly educated Israeli adults. The self-esteem of employed and unemployed individuals and other variables indicative of their psychological well-being were assessed by questionnaires at two points in time, six months apart. Cross-sectional comparisons and longitudinal analysis show that depressive affect, morale and anxiety are affected by employment status, but, contrary to conventional wisdom, self-esteem is neither sensitive to employment status nor to changes in employment status. It is further shown that self-esteem moderates the relationship between employment status and psychological well-being-the psychological well-being of low self-esteem individuals is more sensitive to employment status than that of high self-esteem individuals. Low self-esteem unemployed individuals also tend to be more flexible in some respects when considering job offers. These findings are more in line with self-consistency theory than with the socio-cognitive approach to the self-concept.

Protestant work ethic, work involvement and the psychological impact of unemployment

AbstractThis study is an attempt to replicate and extend recent findings concerning the moderating effect of employment commitment on the psychological impact of unemployment. It was carried out in a highly educated population and employed Protestant work ethic endorsement (PWE) and work involvement (WINV) as indicators of commitment to work. Evidence was collected by questionnaires from 432 individuals who had been unemployed and again, six months later, from most of the same individuals. Cross‐sectional and longitudinal analysis shows that individuals with high WINV were likely to suffer more from unemployment and to gain more from finding employment than low work‐involved individuals. PWE, on the other hand, did not moderate the relationship between employment status and psychological state.

Unemployment and ‘free time’ — the role of protestant work ethic and work involvement

The paper examines the relationships between the degree of belief in the Protestant work ethic (PWE) and work involvement (WINV) with the non-work activities of unemployed individuals and with their psychological state, in view of the alleged negative role played by PWE and WINV in the process of coping with unemployment. Data were collected from 435 individuals with academic qualifications, all of whom had been unemployed and some were still unemployed at the time of data collection. Contrary to expectation it was found that individuals with high PWE or WINV turn to non-work activities more frequently while unemployed and derive more psychological benefit from such activities than individuals low on PWE and WINV. Discussed against the background of current beliefs regarding the psychological impact of unemployment, the results suggest that PWE and WINV, far from hindering individual coping with unemployment through non-work activities, may even contribute to this coping process.

Unemployment, Attribution Theory, and Mental Health: A Review of the British Literature

Although there has recently been an increase, in Europe, North America, and Australia, in research on unemployment, it has been confined to a relatively small number of specific topics. These have included: the psychological impact of unemployment on self-esteem, feelings of well-being, and morale [1-4]; the relationship between unemployment and mental and physical health [5-9]; the psychological benefits of work, which by definition are denied to the unemployed [10-12]; individual differences in reactions to unemployment [13,14]; historical reviews of research on, and reactions to, unemployment [15-17]; and social-policy implications of largescale unemployment [18-20]. One important though somewhat neglected area of research concerns how people explain, or to what they attribute, unemployment, i.e. , what they perceive as its causes. Extensive research in clinical, social, and occupational psychology has demonstrated the significance for coping ability of people's explanations of their various personal problems [21]. Such explanations are important for both the employed and the unemployed. If the employed believe, for example, that the causes of structural unemployment are people's laziness, unwillingness to move or to be retrained, or too comfortable a life on social security, they are likely to be unsympathetic toward the plight of the unemployed, whereas if they perceive the unemployed to be the victims of macroeconomic or sociopolitical conditions over which they have no control, they are much more
