Where Rides Psychiatry?

ABSTRACT To the Editor:— The presentation of two separate and diametrically opposed points of view in the same issue of The Journal emphasizes the confusion characteristic of the present status of psychiatry.I quite agree with the communication, And Madly Ride, (editorial, March 21, 1964 [187:946]), especially the statement: Psychiatry and psychoanalysis today have not lived up to their well-advertised and hoped-for promise.I believe that psychoanalysis is a cult, not a science, whose high priests genuflect at the altar of the phallic symbol. The two main analytic approaches—the Freudian (with emphasis on downward gazing at the genitals) and the Jungian (fixating upwards toward heaven)—should be more appropriately assayed as vehicles for amusement rather than serious therapy.Many physicians, in agreement with this point of view, hold that only the volubility of psychiatry's orthodox adherents, amidst an ecstasy of learned ignorance, is responsible for the aura of respectability that dignifies

The Talking Cure: A Concise and Practical Guide to Psychoanalysis Today

Two free-lance writers and a lay have collaborated with a dual purpose: to supply clinical and theoretical information to potential patients so they may be able to refer themselves to competent practitioners for psychoanalytic treatment, and to prepare lecturers on psychoanalysis for questions that lay audiences might pose. Discussions on the indications for psychoanalysis, the precautions to be taken before commencing, and what to expect during the analysis itself, are presented in a series of rigged interviews. The paradigmatic psychoanalyst is baited by a cynically provocative lawyer and a frequently flippant career girl while often supported by a psychiatrically sophisticated teacher and a housewife. He finally succeeds in dissolving doubts and misconceptions with the use of clinical vignettes and their associated theoretical explanations. Marxism and Psychoanalysis

My topic tonight is one which by profession I am hardly qualified to discuss. I am an economist, and my concern with psychoanalysis is only marginal. If nevertheless I am going to speak about and Psychoanalysis, it is because as a social scientist and as a Marxist I have to consider the social process as a whole; I have to study the phenomena which play a major role in the social life of our time. And it is a fact which we should face squarely: psychoanalysis today exercises an influence which is probably more pervasive than that of any other doctrine or school of thought which contributes to the formation of our collective mind.
