A study was carried out to investigate the effect of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization on vegetative growth of ratoon crop of banana cv. Grand Naine. The pseudostem height was significantly influenced by sole N and P applications, however, there was no significant effect of combined application of N and P on pseudostem height in all the months. Similarly, the pseudostem girth was also influenced with N and P application as a sole and as a combined application, except June and September in case of combined treatment. Number of leaves per plant was influenced significantly with N and P application. Nitrogen application also had a significant effect on leaf area but, N and P combination and P fertilizer as a sole application had no significant effect on leaf area. Nitrogen up to 200 g per plant improved the vegetative growth of banana. The doses above 200 g stabilised the growth or showed little decreasing trend. Phosphorous dose of 60 g P2O5 also increased the growth significantly. The maximum pseudostem height, pseudostem girth, number of leaves and leaf area were recorded with the application of 200 g N in five splits and 60 g P2O5, and the minimum was recorded with lowest dose of 150 g N in five splits and 90 g P2O5.
