A very thin MRPC developed for TOF-PET

PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is a medical molecular imaging modality employed in cancer diagnosis and monitoring. Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) are utilized in Time of Flight (TOF)-PET due to their superior time resolution. Our research group has successfully developed a 4-chamber 32-gap MRPC prototype with 0.128 mm gap thickness. The measured time resolution for cosmic rays is 20 ps, while the time resolution for the time difference between 0.511 MeV photon pairs is 193 ps Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM). The 23.6 mm thickness of the MRPC prototype will affect the time resolution. To investigate the influence of the number and total thickness of gas gaps on the time resolution, Geant4 software is used to simulate the interaction between particles (such as cosmic rays and photons) and MRPC detectors. Most of the gamma photons interact with the resistive plates in MRPCs. It is ejected mostly a Compton electron into one gas gap, causing the gas ionization. In this paper, two 8-gap MRPC prototypes with 0.128 mm gap thickness and 4.2 mm total thickness are fabricated and tested. The time resolution of 39 ps for cosmic rays and 166 ps FWHM for 0.511 MeV photons is obtained using the fast front-end amplifier and waveform acquisition system. So, a real time PET image can be obtained with a pair of MRPCs, and the detection efficiency for gamma can be improved by increasing the number of thin MRPCs.

Simulation study on 3D convolutional neural networks for time-of-flight prediction in monolithic PET detectors using digitized waveforms

Objective. We investigate the use of 3D convolutional neural networks for gamma arrival time estimation in monolithic scintillation detectors. Approach. The required data is obtained by Monte Carlo simulation in GATE v8.2, based on a 50 × 50 × 16 mm3 monolithic LYSO crystal coupled to an 8 × 8 readout array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The electronic signals are simulated as a sum of bi-exponentional functions centered around the scintillation photon detection times. We include various effects of statistical fluctuations present in non-ideal SiPMs, such as dark counts and limited photon detection efficiency. The data was simulated for two distinct overvoltages of the SensL J-Series 60 035 SiPMs, in order to test the effects of different SiPM parameters. The neural network uses the array of detector waveforms, digitized at 10 GS s−1, to predict the time at which the gamma arrived at the crystal. Main results. Best results were achieved for an overvoltage of +6 V, at which point the SiPM reaches its optimal photon detection efficiency, resulting in a coincidence time resolution (CTR) of 141 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM). It is a 26% improvement compared to a simple averaging of the first few SiPM timestamps obtained by leading edge discrimination, which in comparison produced a CTR of 177 ps FWHM. In addition, better detector uniformity was achieved, although some degradation near the corners did remain. Significance. These improvements in time resolution can lead to higher signal-to-noise ratios in time-of-flight positron emission tomography, ultimately resulting in better diagnostic capabilities.

NEMA characterization of the SAFIR prototype PET insert

BackgroundThe SAFIR prototype insert is a preclinical Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner built to acquire dynamic images simultaneously with a 7 T Bruker Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. The insert is designed to perform with an excellent coincidence resolving time of 194 ps Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) and an energy resolution of 13.8% FWHM. These properties enable it to acquire precise quantitative images at activities as high as 500 MBq suitable for studying fast biological processes within short time frames (< 5 s). In this study, the performance of the SAFIR prototype insert is evaluated according to the NEMA NU 4-2008 standard while the insert is inside the MRI without acquiring MRI data.ResultsApplying an energy window of 391–601 keV and a coincidence time window of 500 ps the following results are achieved. The average spatial resolution at 5 mm radial offset is 2.6 mm FWHM when using the Filtered Backprojection 3D Reprojection (FBP3DRP) reconstruction method, improving to 1.2 mm when using the Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (MLEM) method. The peak sensitivity at the center of the scanner is 1.06%. The Noise Equivalent count Rate (NECR) is 799 kcps at the highest measured activity of 537 MBq for the mouse phantom and 121 kcps at the highest measured activity of 624 MBq for the rat phantom. The NECR peak is not yet reached for any of the measurements. The scatter fractions are 10.9% and 17.8% for the mouse and rat phantoms, respectively. The uniform region of the image quality phantom has a 3.0% STD, with a 4.6% deviation from the expected number of counts per voxel. The spill-over ratios for the water and air chambers are 0.18 and 0.17, respectively.ConclusionsThe results satisfy all the requirements initially considered for the insert, proving that the SAFIR prototype insert can obtain dynamic images of small rodents at high activities (sim 500 MBq) with a high sensitivity and an excellent count-rate performance.

A roadmap for sole Cherenkov radiators with SiPMs in TOF-PET

Time of flight positron emission tomography can strongly benefit from a very accurate time estimator given by Cherenkov radiation, which is produced upon a 511 keV positron–electron annihilation gamma interaction in heavy inorganic scintillators. While time resolution in the order of 30 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) has been reported using MCP-PMTs and black painted Cherenkov radiators, such solutions have several disadvantages, like high cost and low detection efficiency of nowadays available MCP-PMTs. On the other hand, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are not limited by those obstacles and provide high photon detection efficiency with a decent time response. Timing performance of PbF2 crystals of various lengths and surface conditions coupled to SiPMs was evaluated against a reference detector with an optimized test setup using high-frequency readout and novel time walk correction, with special attention on the intrinsic limits for one detected Cherenkov photon only. The average number of detected Cherenkov photons largely depends on the crystal surface state, resulting in a tradeoff between low photon time spread, thus good timing performance, and sensitivity. An intrinsic Cherenkov photon yield of 16.5 ± 3.3 was calculated for 2 × 2 × 3 mm3 sized PbF2 crystals upon 511 keV γ-deposition. After time walk correction based on the slew rate of the signal, assuming two identical detector arms in coincidence, and using all events, a time resolution of 215 ps FWHM (142 ps FWHM) was obtained for 2 × 2 × 20 mm3 (2 × 2 × 3 mm3) sized PbF2 crystals, compared to 261 ps (190 ps) without correction. Selecting on one detected photon only, a single photon coincidence time resolution of 113 ps FWHM for black painted and 166 ps for Teflon wrapped crystals was measured for 3 mm length, compared to 145 ps (black) and 263 ps (Teflon) for 20 mm length.

Scalable electronic readout design for a 100 ps coincidence time resolution TOF-PET system

We have developed a scalable detector readout design for a 100 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) time of flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) detector technology. The basic scintillation detectors studied in this paper are based on 2 × 4 arrays of 3 × 3 × 10 mm3 ‘fast-LGSO:Ce’ scintillation crystals side-coupled to 6 × 4 arrays of 3 × 3 mm2 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). We employed a novel mixed-signal front-end electronic configuration and a low timing jitter Field Programming Gate Array-based time to digital converter for data acquisition. Using a 22Na point source, >10 000 coincidence events were experimentally acquired for several SiPM bias voltages, leading edge time-pickoff thresholds, and timing channels. CTR of 102.03 ± 1.9 ps full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) was achieved using single 3 × 3 × 10 mm3 ‘fast-LGSO’ crystal elements, wrapped in Teflon tape and side coupled to a linear array of 3 SiPMs. In addition, the measured average CTR was 113.4 ± 0.7 ps for the side-coupled 2 × 4 crystal array. The readout architecture presented in this work is designed to be scalable to large area module detectors with a goal to create the first TOF-PET system with 100 ps FWHM CTR.

Lead-free MCP to improve coincidence time resolution and reduce MCP direct interactions

Achieving direct imaging of the annihilation position of a positron on an event-by-event basis using an ultrafast detector would have a great impact on the field of nuclear medicine. Cherenkov emission is the most attractive physical phenomenon for realizing such an ultrafast timing performance. Moreover, a microchannel-plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT) is one of the most promising photodetectors for fully exploiting the fast timing properties of Cherenkov emission owing to its excellent single photon time resolution of 25 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM). However, as the MCP structure generally contains a lead compound, the gamma rays frequently and directly interact with the MCP, resulting in the degradation of its timing performance and generation of undesirable side peaks in its coincidence timing histogram. To overcome this problem, we have developed a new MCP-PMT based on an MCP consisting of borosilicate glass, thus drastically reducing the probability of the photoelectric effect occurring in the MCP. To evaluate its insensitivity to gamma rays and its timing performance, a coincidence experiment was performed and showed that the probability of direct interactions was reduced by a factor of 3.4. Moreover, a coincidence time resolution of 35.4 ± 0.4 ps FWHM, which is equivalent to a position resolution of 5.31 mm, was obtained without any pulse height/area cut, improving to 28.7 ± 3.0 ps when selecting on the highest amplitude events by careful optimization of the voltage divider circuit of the new MCP-PMT. The timing performance of this new MCP-PMT presents an important step toward making direct imaging possible.

Precise analysis of the timing performance of Cherenkov-radiator-integrated MCP-PMTs: analytical deconvolution of MCP direct interactions

In order to achieve the ultimate goal of reducing coincidence time resolution (CTR) to 10 ps, thus enabling reconstruction-less positron emission tomography, a Cherenkov-radiator-integrated microchannel plate photomultiplier tube (CRI) reaching CTR of sub-50 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) has been developed. However, a histogram of time differences between a pair of the CRIs shows undesirable side peaks, which are caused by gamma rays directly interacting with the micro channel plates (MCPs). Such direct interaction events are detrimental to the timing performance of the CRI. In this paper, we demonstrate an analytical method of deconvolving MCP direct interaction events from the timing histogram. Considering the information of the main and the two side peaks, the timing uncertainty caused by the MCP direct interaction events is deconvolved and the CTR of the CRI is analytically investigated. Consequently, the CTR is improved from 41.7 to 40.5 ps FWHM by the deconvolution. It means that a mixture of the Cherenkov radiator events and the MCP direct interaction events contribute to the CTR by a factor of 10 ps. The timing performance of the MCP direct interaction events are also evaluated. The CTR between the two MCPs is found to be 66.2 ps FWHM. This indicates that a photocathode-free radiation detector with high timing performance is possible. Elimination of the photocathode from the detector would make detector construction easier and more robust.

Performance Characterization of MPPC Modules for TOF-PET Applications

PET detectors commonly feature large numbers of multipixel photon counters (MPPCs), requiring data acquisition systems with significant signal multiplexing or using application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for independent MPPC readout. We evaluate here two Hamamatsu C13500-4075LC-12 detector modules designed for time-of-flight (TOF) PET. Each module has a 12 $ {\times }$ 12 lutetium fine silicate crystal array (4.2 $ {\times }$ 4.2 $ {\times }$ 20 mm3) one-to-one coupled to a 12 $ {\times }$ 12 array of 4 mm MPPCs. Each detector has 8 18-channel ASICs utilizing time-over-threshold (ToT) readout. At low event rates, the detectors have full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) energy resolution of 11.8%±0.4%, measured in linearized energy spectra, and 275 ps FWHM coincidence timing resolution (CTR) using energy window of ±1 photopeak FWHM. The 511 keV photopeak amplitude in the ToT spectrum changed 0.24%/°C. There was <10% event loss up to 1450 kcps/detector. From count rates of 35–1450 kcps the 511 keV photopeak position varied by 1.2%, while photopeak FWHM in the ToT spectra increased by 54%, from 5.8% to 9.0%, corresponding to energy resolution changing from 11.8% to approximately 18.0%. Over this count rate range the CTR varied from 285 to 435 ps FWHM. The TOF-PET module performance suggests they are well suited to use in whole-body PET applications.

Dual-ended readout of bismuth germanate to improve timing resolution in time-of-flight PET

The scintillator bismuth germanate (BGO) has attractive properties for positron emission tomography (PET) systems such as high stopping power, high photo-fraction, and relatively low cost. However, its moderate scintillation light yield and slow rise and decay time compared to lutetium (yttrium) oxyorthosilicate (L(Y)SO) results in a degradation of coincidence timing resolution when scintillation photons are used for timing. Recently, it has been reported that the coincidence timing resolution of BGO can be improved by detecting Cerenkov photons, while scintillation photons still provide energy information. However, the measured coincidence timing spectrum showed much longer tails compared to the single Gaussian distribution. Because of this, TOF PET detectors based on BGO will perform worse than the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the distribution, which is the most common metric for timing resolution, would suggest. From simulation studies, during the first few picoseconds, BGO generates ~16 Cerenkov photons per photoelectric interaction, following a 511 keV gamma ray interaction, while the probability of producing a scintillation photon during the first few picoseconds is very small. Therefore, when we configure a BGO crystal with dual-ended readout, the first arriving photons among the two opposing SiPMs are most likely Cerenkov photons, and by selecting the appropriate SiPM, an improvement in coincidence timing resolution can be achieved. In this study, both ends of a 3 × 3 × 20 mm3 BGO crystal were coupled to NUV-HD SiPMs. Trigger time differences from the dual-ended readout of BGO were widely distributed due to detecting a mixture of prompt Cerenkov and scintillation photons on both SiPMs. When using trigger times from only a single SiPM, the estimated coincidence timing resolution between two identical BGO detectors was 463 ps FWHM and 1463 ps FWTM. In contrast, when using trigger times from both SiPMs, the estimated coincidence timing resolution was 399 ps FWHM and 936 ps FWTM with no loss of events. Based on a recent report, high-bandwidth amplifiers were implemented and shown to further improve the estimated coincidence timing resolution to 331 ps FWHM and 923 ps FWTM. In summary, the coincidence timing resolution of BGO, most notably the FWTM, was significantly improved using time information from the dual-ended readout.

Coincidence time resolution of 30 ps FWHM using a pair of Cherenkov-radiator-integrated MCP-PMTs

Radiation detectors dedicated to time-of-flight positron emission tomography (PET) have been developed, and coincidence time resolution (CTR) of sub-100 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) has been achieved by carefully optimizing scintillators and photodetectors. Achieving a CTR of 30 ps FWHM by using a pair of annihilation γ-rays would allow us to directly localize the annihilation point within an accuracy of 4.5 mm. Such direct localization can potentially eliminate the requirement of image reconstruction processes in clinical PET systems, which would have a huge impact on clinical protocols and molecular imaging. To obtain such a high CTR, researchers have investigated the use of prompt emissions such as Cherenkov radiation and hot-intra band luminescence. Although it is still challenging to achieve a CTR of 30 ps FWHM even with a Cherenkov-based detector, the experimentally measured CTR is approaching the goal. In this work, we developed a Cherenkov-radiator-integrated micro-channel plate photomultiplier tube (CRI-MCP-PMT), where there are no optical boundaries between the radiator and photocathode, and its timing performance was investigated. By removing the optical boundaries, reflections are eliminated and transmission to the photocathode is improved, resulting in high timing capability. As a result, a CTR of 30.1 ± 2.4 ps FWHM, which is equivalent to a position resolution of 4.5 ± 0.3 mm along a line of response (LOR), was obtained by using a pair of CRI-MCP-PMTs.

Timing-performance evaluation of Cherenkov-based radiation detectors

With the upgradation of detector components, such as scintillators and photodetectors, the PET-image signal-to-noise ratio of time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) systems has been improved, compared to those of ordinary nonTOF-PET systems. A TOF-PET with an ultrahigh time resolution, for example a coincidence time resolution (CTR) better than few tens of picoseconds, can not only improve the image quality, but also remove the image reconstruction process, significantly impacting medical imaging. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a high-time resolution PET detector. We focus on the prompt emission of Cherenkov radiation, owing to the instantaneousness of which, a high time resolution can be expected. One of the candidates for the Cherenkov radiator is lead fluoride (PbF2) due it has excellent properties, including transparency toward the ultraviolet region, high refractive index (n = 1.82), and high density (7.77 g/cm3). Moreover, it does not contain radioisotopes, unlike lutetium-based scintillators, which are commonly used in the currently available TOF-PET detectors. In this work, we experimentally investigate the timing performance of PbF2-based Cherenkov detectors, breaking down the timing performance into physical components. 3×3×5 mm3 and 9.6×9.6×5 mm3 PbF2 crystals are used as Cherenkov radiators; both are attached to a microchannel plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT) because the single channel MCP-PMT is one of the best photodetectors in terms of the SPTR, which is 25 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM). All the surfaces, except the end surface where the MCP-PMT is connected, are wrapped in black tape to suppress the reflections of the Cherenkov photons in the crystal. The CTR is measured by placing a detector pair face-to-face, using an 22Na point source, and an oscilloscope at 20 GS/s with a set bandwidth of 4.2 GHz. A CTR of 46.9 ps FWHM, corresponding to a position resolution of 7.0 mm, is obtained, consistent with our simulation results.

NUV-Sensitive Silicon Photomultiplier Technologies Developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler.

Different applications require different customizations of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) technology. We present a review on the latest SiPM technologies developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK, Trento), characterized by a peak detection efficiency in the near-UV and customized according to the needs of different applications. Original near-UV sensitive, high-density SiPMs (NUV-HD), optimized for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) application, feature peak photon detection efficiency (PDE) of 63% at 420 nm with a 35 um cell size and a dark count rate (DCR) of 100 kHz/mm2. Correlated noise probability is around 25% at a PDE of 50% at 420 nm. It provides a coincidence resolving time (CRT) of 100 ps FWHM (full width at half maximum) in the detection of 511 keV photons, when used for the readout of LYSO(Ce) scintillator (Cerium-doped lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate) and down to 75 ps FWHM with LSO(Ce:Ca) scintillator (Cerium and Calcium-doped lutetium oxyorthosilicate). Starting from this technology, we developed three variants, optimized according to different sets of specifications. NUV-HD–LowCT features a 60% reduction of direct crosstalk probability, for applications such as Cherenkov telescope array (CTA). NUV-HD–Cryo was optimized for cryogenic operation and for large photosensitive areas. The reference application, in this case, is the readout of liquid, noble-gases scintillators, such as liquid Argon. Measurements at 77 K showed a remarkably low value of the DCR of a few mHz/mm2. Finally, vacuum-UV (VUV)-HD features an increased sensitivity to VUV light, aiming at direct detection of photons below 200 nm. PDE in excess of 20% at 175 nm was measured in liquid Xenon. In the paper, we discuss the specifications on the SiPM related to different types of applications, the SiPM design challenges and process optimizations, and the results from the experimental characterization of the different, NUV-sensitive technologies developed at FBK.

Performance evaluation of a new high-sensitivity time-of-flight clinical PET/CT system

BackgroundPoleStar m660 is a newly developed clinical PET/CT system with time-of-flight (TOF) capability. The aim of this study is to characterize the performance of the new system. Spatial resolution, sensitivity, scatter fraction, and noise equivalent count rate (NECR) were measured on the scanner according to the NEMA NU 2-2012 protocol. The timing resolution was measured using a rotating line source that orbited around the center of field of view (CFOV) at a radius of 20 cm. The image quality phantom was also imaged to quantify the percent contrast, percent background variability, and residual error. The impacts of data acquisition time and bed overlap on the PET image quality were also evaluated using phantom and patient studies.ResultsThe transverse (axial) spatial resolutions were 3.59 mm (3.67), 4.08 mm (4.65), and 5.32 mm (6.48) full width at half maximum (FWHM) at 1 cm, 10 cm, and 20 cm, respectively, off the CFOV. The measured sensitivity was 10.7 cps/kBq at the CFOV and 10.4 cps/kBq at 10 cm off the CFOV. The peak NECR was 216.7 kcps at an activity concentration of 29.1 kBq/ml, and the scatter fraction was 38.2%. An average of 435 ps FWHM timing resolution was measured. For the image quality phantom, the contrast recovery ratios ranged from 33.9 to 76.4%, while the background variability ranged from 4.7 to 2.0%. In the preliminary clinical study, no noticeable difference in the image quality was observed when the scan time for the whole body and brain was reduced to 1 min/bed and 3 min, respectively. The tested 21% bed overlap showed no significant difference in the image quality compared with the default 38% bed overlap setting.ConclusionsThe physical performances of the PoleStar m660 PET/CT system showed good sensitivity, count rate performance, and timing resolution. The improved performance could help to reduce the acquisition time and bed overlap in the clinical application without detectable compromise in the image quality.

Quenching Circuit and SPAD Integrated in CMOS 65 nm with 7.8 ps FWHM Single Photon Timing Resolution

This paper presents a new quenching circuit (QC) and single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) implemented in TSMC CMOS 65 nm technology. The QC was optimized for single photon timing resolution (SPTR) with a view to an implementation in a 3D digital SiPM. The presented QC has a timing jitter of 4 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) and the SPAD and QC has a 7.8 ps FWHM SPTR. The QC adjustable threshold allows timing resolution optimization as well as SPAD excess voltage and rise time characterization. The adjustable threshold, hold-off and recharge are essential to optimize the performances of each SPAD. This paper also provides a better understanding of the different contributions to the SPTR. A study of the contribution of the SPAD excess voltage variation combined to the QC time propagation delay variation is presented. The proposed SPAD and QC eliminates the SPAD excess voltage contribution to the SPTR for excess voltage higher than 1 V due to its fixed time propagation delay.

Sub-3 mm, near-200 ps TOF/DOI-PET imaging with monolithic scintillator detectors in a 70 cm diameter tomographic setup

Recently, a monolithic scintillator detector for time-of-flight (TOF)/depth-of-interaction (DOI) positron emission tomography (PET) was developed. It has a detector spatial resolution of ~1.7 mm full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM), a coincidence resolving time (CRT) of ~215 ps FWHM, and ~4.7 mm FWHM DOI resolution. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the imaging performance of this detector in a 70 cm diameter PET geometry. We built a tomographic setup representative of a whole-body clinical scanner, comprising two coaxially rotating arms, each carrying a detector module, and a central, rotating phantom table. The fully automated setup sequentially acquires all possible lines of response (LORs) of a complete detector ring, using a step-and-shoot acquisition approach. The modules contained 2 × 2 detectors, each detector consisting of a 32 mm × 32 mm × 22 mm LYSO crystal and a digital silicon photomultiplier (dSiPM) array. The system spatial resolution was assessed using a Na-22 point source at different radial distances in the field-of-view (FOV). Using 2D filtered back projection (2D FBP, non-TOF), tangential and radial spatial resolutions of ~2.9 mm FWHM were obtained at the center of the FOV. The use of DOI information resulted in almost uniform spatial resolution throughout the FOV up to a radial distance of 25 cm, where the radial and tangential resolution are ~3.3 mm FWHM and ~4.7 mm FWHM, respectively, whereas without DOI the resolution deteriorates to ~9 mm FWHM. Additional measurements were performed with a Na-22 filled Derenzo-like phantom at different locations within the FOV. Images reconstructed with a TOF maximum-likelihood expectation-maximization (TOF ML-EM) algorithm show that the system is able to clearly resolve 3 mm diameter hot rods up to 25 cm radial distance. The excellent and uniform spatial resolution, combined with an energy resolution of 10.2% FWHM and a CRT of ~212 ps FWHM, indicates a great potential for monolithic scintillators as practical high-performance detectors in TOF/DOI-PET systems.

A Low-Cost Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting System for Multiview Time-Domain Diffuse Optical Tomography

Diffuse optical tomography resorting to time-domain measurements (TD-DOT) provides information-rich data that have not yet been fully exploited for image reconstruction, notably to increase imaging spatial resolution. Current TD-DOT scanners suffer from a very low sensitivity owing to their small number of detection channels. This leads to excessively long acquisition times for in vivo imaging. To obtain a higher number of detection channels, thus increasing detection density, a low-cost time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) system dedicated to TD-DOT was designed, resorting solely to off-the-shelf electronic components to reduce costs, in distinction to custom application-specific integrated circuit solutions. The system features four input channels, each of them including a leading-edge discriminator for direct interfacing with off-the-shelf photodetector modules and a programmable delay line to compensate for undesired propagation delays, thus also avoiding manual adjustment of cable lengths. The system supports a large number of TCSPC channels using a daisy-chain configuration through an onboard Ethernet switch. It also features a 13.02 ps bin width with a 12.5 ns dynamic range. Results show excellent linearity, with a $\sigma _{\mathrm{ DNL}}$ of 1.7% least significant bit (LSB), peak differential nonlinearity of 5% LSB, and peak integral nonlinearity of 10% LSB and an average accuracy of 19 ps full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) throughout two separate four-channel systems. The system was tested in a TD-DOT acquisition setup, and 37 ps FWHM instrument response functions were obtained using a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detector. Diffuse intrinsic measurements were also acquired and compared with a reference TCSPC system showing similar results.

TDC Array Tradeoffs in Current and Upcoming Digital SiPM Detectors for Time-of-Flight PET

Radiation detection used in positron emission tomography (PET) exploits the timing information to remove background noise and refine position measurement through time-of-flight information. Fine time resolution in the order of 10 ps full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) would not only improve contrast in the image, but would also enable direct image reconstruction without iterative or back-projected algorithms. Currently, PET experimental setups based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) reach 73 ps FWHM, where the scintillation process plays the larger role in spreading the timing resolution. This will change with the optimization of faster light emission mechanisms (prompt photons), where readout optoelectronics will once more have a noticeable contribution to the timing resolution limit. In addition to reducing electronic jitter as much as possible, other aspects of the design space must also explored, especially for digital SiPMs. Unlike traditional SiPMs, digital SiPMs can integrate circuits like time-to-digital converters (TDCs) directly with individual or groups of light sensing cells. Designers should consider the number of TDCs to integrate, the area they occupy, their power consumption, their resolution, and the impact of signal processing algorithms and find a compromise with the figure of merit and the coincidence timing resolution (CTR). This paper presents a parametric simulation flow for digital SiPM microsystems that evaluates CTR based on these aspects and on the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) in order to guide their design for present and future PET systems. For a small $1.1\times 1.1\times3.0$ mm3 LYSO crystal, the simulations indicate that for a low jitter digital SiPM microsystem with 18.2% photon detection efficiency, fewer than four timestamps with any multi-TDC configuration scheme nearly obtain the optimal CTR with BLUE (just below 100 ps FWHM), but with limited 5% improvement over only using the first observed photon. On the other hand, if a similar crystal but with 2.5% prompt photon fraction is considered, BLUE provides an improvement between 80% and 200% (depending on electronic jitter) over using only the first observed photon. In this case, a few tens of timestamps are required, yielding very different design guidelines than for standard LYSO scintillators.

A 32 mm × 32 mm × 22 mm monolithic LYSO:Ce detector with dual-sided digital photon counter readout for ultrahigh-performance TOF-PET and TOF-PET/MRI

New applications for positron emission tomography (PET) and combined PET/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are currently emerging, for example in the fields of neurological, breast, and pediatric imaging. Such applications require improved image quality, reduced dose, shorter scanning times, and more precise quantification. This can be achieved by means of dedicated scanners based on ultrahigh-performance detectors, which should provide excellent spatial resolution, precise depth-of-interaction (DOI) estimation, outstanding time-of-flight (TOF) capability, and high detection efficiency. Here, we introduce such an ultrahigh-performance TOF/DOI PET detector, based on a 32 mm × 32 mm × 22 mm monolithic LYSO:Ce crystal. The 32 mm × 32 mm front and back faces of the crystal are coupled to a digital photon counter (DPC) array, in so-called dual-sided readout (DSR) configuration. The fully digital detector offers a spatial resolution of ~1.1 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM)/~1.2 mm mean absolute error, together with a DOI resolution of ~2.4 mm FWHM, an energy resolution of 10.2% FWHM, and a coincidence resolving time of 147 ps FWHM. The time resolution closely approaches the best results (135 ps FWHM) obtained to date with small crystals made from the same material coupled to the same DPC arrays, illustrating the excellent correction for optical and electronic transit time spreads that can be achieved in monolithic scintillators using maximum-likelihood techniques for estimating the time of interaction. The performance barely degrades for events with missing data (up to 6 out of 32 DPC dies missing), permitting the use of almost all events registered under realistic acquisition conditions. Moreover, the calibration procedures and computational methods used for position and time estimation follow recently made improvements that make them fast and practical, opening up realistic perspectives for using DSR monolithic scintillator detectors in TOF-PET and TOF-PET/MRI systems.

Towards monolithic scintillator based TOF-PET systems: practical methods for detector calibration and operation

Gamma-ray detectors based on thick monolithic scintillator crystals can achieve spatial resolutions <2 mm full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) and coincidence resolving times (CRTs) better than 200 ps FWHM. Moreover, they provide high sensitivity and depth-of-interaction (DOI) information. While these are excellent characteristics for clinical time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET), the application of monolithic scintillators has so far been hampered by the lengthy and complex procedures needed for position- and time-of-interaction estimation. Here, the algorithms previously developed in our group are revised to make the calibration and operation of a large number of monolithic scintillator detectors in a TOF-PET system practical. In particular, the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) classification method for x,y-position estimation is accelerated with an algorithm that quickly preselects only the most useful reference events, reducing the computation time for position estimation by a factor of ~200 compared to the previously published k-NN 1D method. Also, the procedures for estimating the DOI and time of interaction are revised to enable full detector calibration by means of fan-beam or flood irradiations only. Moreover, a new technique is presented to allow the use of events in which some of the photosensor pixel values and/or timestamps are missing (e.g. due to dead time), so as to further increase system sensitivity. The accelerated methods were tested on a monolithic scintillator detector specifically developed for clinical PET applications, consisting of a 32 mm × 32 mm × 22 mm LYSO : Ce crystal coupled to a digital photon counter (DPC) array. This resulted in a spatial resolution of 1.7 mm FWHM, an average DOI resolution of 3.7 mm FWHM, and a CRT of 214 ps. Moreover, the possibility of using events missing the information of up to 16 out of 64 photosensor pixels is shown. This results in only a small deterioration of the detector performance.

In-depth study of single photon time resolution for the Philips digital silicon photomultiplier

The digital silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) has been commercialised by Philips as an innovative technology compared to analog silicon photomultiplier devices. The Philips digital SiPM, has a pair of time to digital converters (TDCs) connected to 12800 single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs). Detailed measurements were performed to understand the low photon time response of the Philips digital SiPM. The single photon time resolution (SPTR) of every single SPAD in a pixel consisting of 3200 SPADs was measured and an average value of 85 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) was observed. Each SPAD sends the signal to the TDC with different signal propagation time, resulting in a so called trigger network skew. This distribution of the trigger network skew for a pixel (3200 SPADs) has been measured and a variation of 50 ps FWHM was extracted. The SPTR of the whole pixel is the combination of SPAD jitter, trigger network skew, and the SPAD non-uniformity. The SPTR of a complete pixel was 103 ps FWHM at 3.3 V above breakdown voltage. Further, the effect of the crosstalk at a low photon level has been studied, with the two photon time resolution degrading if the events are a combination of detected (true) photons and crosstalk events. Finally, the time response to multiple photons was investigated.
