Entrepreneurial developments and small scale industry contribution to Nigerian national development- A marketing interface

In both developed and developing countries, the government is turning to small and medium scale industries and entrepreneurs, as a means of economic development and a veritable means of solving problems. It is a seedbed of innovations, inventions and employment. Entrepreneurship is as old as Nigeria and had contributed to the growth of the economy. Presently in Nigeria, SMEs assist in promoting the growth of the country’s economy, hence all the levels of government at different times have policies which promote the growth and sustenance of SMEs. This paper identifies the orientation of SME’s and entrepreneurial trends in Nigeria, tackles the operational definition and scopes, and describes the role of the Nigerian government as a participant, regulator and facilitator, both legally and politically in the growth of SMEs and entrepreneurship. It identifies the marketing problems of SMEs and entrepreneurships in Nigeria, the provision and enactment of beneficial and supportive laws, the provision of infrastructural facilities, constant man-power and development, direct financial assistance to SMEs and the establishment of finance institutions to support SMEs. It identifies the roles of SMEs in Nigeria’s development and growth. It discusses the entrepreneurial thoughts, problems and advance practical marketing solution. It concludes by clearly specifying the role of marketing to the survival of SMEs and entrepreneurship in Nigeria, and relevant recommendations. For SMEs to survive marketing practice and principles must be given prominence.

Determinants of Rural Development in Edo State, Nigeria: An Overview

About 70% of the total population in Nigeria lives in the rural areas, while half of this population is without proper-formal education (World Bank 2005). Data for this study which is on the Determinants of rural Development in Edo State, Nigeria were collected through the primary and secondary sources. Primary data were collected through the random administration of (250) questionnaires on respondents in five selected rural communities in Edo State. Simple percentage was used to analyze data. Results from this study show that good transportation system, increase in grants and revenue allocation, provision of infrastructural facilities, quality education, quality housing, employment opportunities and provision of micro credit scheme are impetus to the development of rural communities. The study further recommends that government should pay more attention to the economic and infrastructural development of rural communities; government should see rural areas as potential ports for economic and socio-cultural development of the nation and not as a burden, so as to bridge the gap between rural and urban environments. Perceived Factors Affecting Performance Of Extension Workers In Imo State, Nigeria

The study focused on perceived factors affecting performance of extension workers in Imo State, Nigeria. Data for the study was collected from 83 Extension agents from the Imo State Agricultural Development Programme (ADP). Results of the study revealed that the organizational factors that affect performance are mobility/logistic factors, job design and Administration. It is therefore recommended that Agricultural extension agents should be encouraged to develop a meaningful work experience. There is need to recruit adequate number of extension agents. International donor agencies involved in agricultural development should ensure adequate budgetary arrangement to accommodate extra costs involved in extension agents participation activities. The Agricultural Development Programme should show more concern for staff welfare to enhance adequate commitment to organizational goal and Extension Service generally. Government should take measures to improve working conditions of the field agents through provision of transport allowances, monthly salaries and provision of infrastructural facilities in the rural areas to enable the extension agent live in their place of work. Field agents must be part of decisions concerning their personal welfare and job advancement. Harnessing the potentials of youth for rural household food security in Nigeria

The food security question calls for participatory approach by the major stakeholders in the rural household in agriculture Youth are veritable assets in the household because of their dynamism, adventure, ambition and innovativeness. These potentials could be harnessed for rural household food security. This paper discusses the place of the Nigerian youth and how his potentials could be functionally and maximally utilised for food security of the rural household. The policy recommendations included the re-definition of the household to incorporate the three major stakeholders namely adult male, adult female and the youth, building partnership between the youth and rural development agencies, institutional and organizational reforms, provision of infra-structural facilities in the rural areas and re-orientation campaign to re-position the status of agriculture for meaningful youth identification. Indigenous Interests and Infrastructure Development in Queensland

The Australian legal system recognises both indigenous interests and development interests in the provision of infrastructure facilities for the community. While the legal system has created the potential for conflict between these interests, it has also been given the responsibility for resolving these conflicts. The response of the Australian legal system to indigenous interests has changed quite dramatically over the last 200 years: from an almost total failure to recognise indigenous interests to an increasing acceptance of the need to conserve indigenous cultural heritage and more recently to a recognition of traditional interests in land. Australia has been one of the last former European colonies to recognise native title. Although indigenous cultural heritage and native title are separate parts of the legal system, they are in practice interrelated. Neither can be understood except in the context of their historical development.

The provision of infrastructural facilities has traditionally been the responsibility of the public sector. However, fiscal constraints, technological innovations, low levels of operational efficiency and inappropriate pricing policies have led to fundamental changes. This paper looks initially at policy changes in the telecommunications sector in India since 1991. It argues that even though the reforms have been successful in terms of encouraging private participation in the sector, it is too early to say how effective they will be in the longer run in achieving sectoral and national development goals. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Seaport development and state boundaries: The Ems-Dollart region and the Scheldt-Antwerp region on Dutch frontiers

Certainty as well as uncertainty about the location of the state boundary can easily give rise to conflicts on regional development, concerning location of economic activities, provision of infrastructure facilities, and environmental management. The chances for discord, delaying or frustrating regional development, are relatively high in low-lying coastal areas with a high degree of marine indentation and estuarine rivers. The historical development of two different cases chosen from Dutch wet boundaries are described to show changes in levels and points of view with regard to problem solving. These regions are the Antwerp-Western Scheldt estuary region, an example of so-called successive waters, and the Ems-Dollart sound region of the boundary waters type. Special attention is given to thematic change from economics and infrastructure to environmental and more comprehensive problems. Different points of view and levels of government are shown: local, regional and national. In the actual situation, cooperation and collaboration are becoming more important under the influence of supranational institutions, such as the EC and Benelux, expressing themselves in regional initiatives.

The rural sector in the development prospects and problems of a typical African country ? Nigeria

This paper begins by theoretically presenting the rural sector of developing countries in a national development context. The critical role of the sector is highlighted and the system effects of inadequate equipment of the sector for such role are considered. The Nigerian situation is used to illustrate the prospects and the problems of the rural sector in most African countries. Remedial policy measures are shown to lie mainly in the provision of infrastructural facilities, in forging effective linkage relationships with the urban sector and in rural economy diversification towards a nationally beneficial integrated development.

Services for Electronic Small-Scale Units

The paper commences with the identification of the features that specially characterise Electronic Small-Scale Units. In this context, the paper considers such items as licences, reservation of items in small-scale sector, technology obsolescence, production methods, knowhows, ambient conditions, ancillary status, gestation period and skilled labour requirement, as they apply to small-scale electronic units. The paper then discusses the method of product identification and provision of infrastructural facilities and services to small-scale units. It further stresses the necessity of a flow chart in the efficient running of a small-scale unit. How process knowhow services should be given freely by National Laboratories or other institutions are considered next. A novel method of royalty payments for knowhows is also suggested. The paper concludes with the necessity of effective marketing services.
