Combining MDE and Scrum on the rapid prototyping of web information systems

Rapid application prototyping RAP is recommended to obtain quick feedback from clients, allowing the validation of software requirements before acceptance tests. In this regard, model-driven engineering MDE and agile methods are two important approaches that suggest the use of techniques for RAP. Some fundamental differences between them exist: MDE focuses on software reuse through annotated system models while agile methods recommend the use simpler models to achieve quick feedback from clients. In order to comply with agility principles but still concerned about the future reuse of the developed software, the quick design of annotated models must be considered. This paper presents a MDE-based RAP methodology and tool support to quickly generate web front ends and models based on the MVC architectural pattern. In addition, we report a case study that has joined MDE and Scrum by applying our methodology and tool support for complete development of web information system in a Scrum-based industrial software project. We also present lessons learnt from the case study and point out some issues for future research in software engineering to facilitate the introduction of MDE in target contexts.

Functional prototype of a web information system to assist planning software projects, based on cmmi-dev 1.2

El proyecto relacionado en este articulo aborda todas las etapas del ciclo de vida basico del desarrollo de un Sistema de Informacion para la planificacion de proyectos de software, teniendo en cuenta el modelo de mejores practicas llamado Capability Maturity Model Integration - DEV 1.2 (CMMI - DEV 1.2) creado por la Universidad Carnegie Mellon de Pittsburgh Pensilvania, el modelo brinda una estructura para la mejora de los procesos de desarrollo, ademas del mantenimiento y adquisicion de herramientas de tecnologia. Una de las etapas que aborda el nivel de madurez 2 del modelo CMMI se llama Planificacion de Proyectos (PP), esta area de proceso CMMI se centra en establecer y mantener la planificacion de las diferentes actividades de un proyecto y asi permitir a las MIPYMES repetir los casos de exito logrados en desarrollos anteriores, obtener un buen plan de proyecto, gestionar de forma adecuada la relacion con las personas involucradas y finalmente lograr la realizacion de un mantenimiento de la planificacion. Planificacion de Proyectos es indispensable para que una compania inicie el camino hacia la gestion de sus procesos con buenas practicas de ejecucion, la planificacion se considera una de las etapas mas importantes en el desarrollo de un proyecto tecnologico; las MIPYMES que esten dedicadas al desarrollo de software, que quieran agregar valor a sus procesos y que trabajen bajo la estructura de un modelo de mejores practicas, deben contar con estas herramientas para mejorar el rendimiento de los procesos y optimizar costos.

Design of Object-based Information System Prototype

Researchers who use science and technology information were found to ask an information service in which they can excerpt the contents they needed, rather than using the information at article level. In this study, we micronized the contents of scholarly articles into text, image, and table and then constructed a micro-content DB to design a new information system prototype based on this micro-content. After designing the prototype, we performed usability test for this prototype so as to confirm the usefulness of the system prototype. We expect that the outcome of this study will fulfill the segmented and diversified information need of researchers.

Usability evaluation and assessment of a novel emergency department IT system developed using a cognitive systems engineering approach

This paper presents the results of a usability evaluation conducted of an electronic Emergency Department information system (EDIS) prototype that was designed using a cognitive system engineering (CSE) approach. Participants were asked to complete tasks using the EDIS prototype, while thinking aloud about their interactions with the displays. Participants also completed subjective assessments of the system that related to 1) cognitive performance support objectives, 2) usability, usefulness, and frequency of system use, and 3) qualitative feedback. Mean scores were calculated for cognitive performance support objectives as well as usability, usefulness, and frequency of use for each display. Mean scores for all cognitive performance support objectives were six or higher. The mean usability score was five or higher, and the mean usefulness score was six or higher. Displays that provided information on individual patient status had the highest scores. Results from this evaluation regarding positive ratings for the cognitive support objectives provide evidence that CSE design methods can be used to understand the goals and objectives of medical work domains.

An Information System Framework and Prototype for Collaboration and Standardization in Chinese Liquor Production

This paper proposes an information system framework for production collaboration and standardization in Chinese liquor industry, and examines the key implementation issues of information systems in Chinese liquor production. A descriptive single case study is conducted to explore and identify the benefits, challenges, and success factors of information system implementation in Chinese liquor production by taking a famous Chinese liquor producer as the target case company. The case study shows that the proposed information system framework is helpful to improve collaboration and standardization in Chinese liquor production. Some benefits and challenges of implementing information systems are different from those described in previous studies because of various distinct, real-world features of Chinese liquor production. The proposed system framework offers the possibility to improve the Chinese liquor producer's production efficiency and market competition by better production collaboration and standardization.

The Development of Online Disaster Information System Using Location Based Service (LBS) Technology

<p>Indonesia is geographically located in the disaster vulnerable area and frequently hit by various disasters such as earthquake, flood, etc. So that Indonesian people aware that the disaster information system is very important. Thus, the development of information and communication technology application is needed for disaster management. For this purpose, this paper proposes on the development of online disaster information system based on location based service (LBS) technology by using short message service (SMS) gateway and global positioning system (GPS). Then,the web-based prototype of online disaster information system is designed and developed as the media to provide information of location and situation of the disaster area. Furthermore, a user interface is also designed and developed to transmit input data as the location information using manual SMS and automatically using smartphone based on SMS/GPS. The research method used in this research is a spiral method that begins with conceptual design, prototype development, application test, and evaluation. The results of this research are the web-based information system and the implemented user interface application (we called ASIKonLBS) for Android based smartphone. The online mapping of input data from smartphone to the web-based system has been tested. It shows that the disaster location information can be mapped to Google Maps timely and accurately that can be accessed using the Internet connection. The evaluation to mapping delay time shows that it is lower than the refresh time of the web-based system. Therefore, the proposed online system can be categorized as a real-time system.</p>

E-maintenance ontology-based approach for heterogeneous distributed robotic production capabilities

An equipment monitoring and e-maintenance information system prototype customised for the robotic production capabilities is presented in this paper. Such an infrastructure enables stakeholders from the robotic field to share and take advantage of maintenance knowledge, create virtual monitoring rooms for remote management used to track equipment performing in real production environment over the life cycle. An ontology-based representation model is developed and used in a prototype for the sharing and use of maintenance knowledge related to the robotic field. The prototype can be dynamically scaled on a hybrid cloud computing infrastructure in order to fit the needs for maintenance and monitoring of other type of production equipment.

Design and implementation of an agricultural publication information system using metadata description

The scientific work of researchers or research institutes is generally assessed by the quality of resulting research publications. Therefore, a need arises to maintain information on publications in an organized and accessible manner. Existing software tools for information management of publications are not well suited for evaluation purposes, particularly for agricultural research, with interdisciplinary aspects. We implemented an Agricultural Publications Information System (AgriPubInfo) prototype for the documentation of research publications and evaluation of performance of institutions involved in agricultural research. This prototype, which supports a wide range of publication types, is designed to meet the specific requirements of agricultural research institutions and has features like advanced search option, extraction of publications statistics based on a variety of visual form based queries, etc. For filtering and effective searching, metadata formats suitable for describing scientific publications have been used in creating the database. Several workflow procedures maintain data quality and the system allows the researchers / users to enter the publication data in the database themselves. Public search facility has also been provided for searching records, dynamic browsing of publication lists and exporting the contents to various formats for creation of reports. This AgriPubInfo prototype can serve as a versatile tool for monitoring progress and facilitating evaluation of research quality at the individual and institutional levels.

Research on Passenger Dedicated Line Track Maintenance Information System

Track Maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient of railway transportation. After analysis of foreign management techniques for high-speed railway track maintenance, combined with the characteristic of passenger dedicated line in China, this paper has explored new ideas of the information system of passenger dedicated line track maintenance and at the same time researched on the theory and method of system construction in depth. Combined with parts of after-operation data of Beijing-Tianjin intercity passenger dedicated line and based on the key technologies and system design in the paper, a prototype information system of track maintenance for Beijing-Tianjin intercity passenger dedicated line has been developed.

E-government and Forest Service: The Case of the University Forest of Taxiarchis

The present paper studies e-Government and describes the initial structure of an e-Government information system to be applied in the Greek Forest sector. University Forest and its activities are presented, it is also described the architectural framework of an e-government model, which will be used as a tool guide, and a presentation of the e-government major types as a web design structure guide. The prototype information system that will be designed promotes the activities run by the Forest Service in educational, business, administrative, informational, recreational and ecological levels.

Prototype of an Aquacultural Information System Based on Internet of Things E-Nose

Abstract Aquaculture is the fastest growing food-producing sector in the World, especially, in P. R. China. Development of a Disability Employment Information System: An Information Systems Design Theory Approach

Significant socio-political constraints are often imposed on the employment of people with disabilities yet employment is important because it provides these individuals with a sense of self-satisfaction and contribution to society. Existing multi-organizational e-government systems have not been found to meet the unique user requirements of this environment. In this study, we design, develop and evaluate a disability employment information system prototype. We employ a design science approach and a multi-site case study of the Ticket-to-Work (TTW) - a U.S. Social Security Administration program that rewards certain public and private organizations for providing employment services for people with disabilities. Evaluation results demonstrate the utility of our design to improve disability employment services. As a result, this study provides a framework for researchers and a prototype for developers to advance the development of disability information systems.

A Safety Assessment Method of Power Enterprises Based on Historical Case Knowledge

This paper provides a case-based approach for the management system security assessment decision making of power generation enterprises. A case matching method named CBR-Grey is introduced in which Delphi approach and Grey System theory are integrated. Based on this method, we implement a prototype of enterprise assessment information system for the panel of experts. The experimental results based on a real-world power generation enterprises safety assessment data set show that CBRSYS-TPP has high accuracy and systematically performance.

Evaluation of a prototype health information system using the FITT framework

To demonstrate how the fit between individual, task and technology (FITT) framework can be used for health information system evaluation. We developed a prototype information system with an integrated expert system for head- ache patients. The FITT framework was used to evaluate the prototype health information system. The FITT framework, once applied, positively evaluated 199 integrated headache diagnoses, 349 schemes and 698 symptoms. We assessed 528 internet pages to determine to what extent they met the users' expectations. In two study sections, a total of 70 (of 140) participants used the system. In the second section, the intervention group did significantly better (P=0.031) than the control group. The FITT framework provided a proper tool for evaluating the prototype health information system and determining which specific set of deltas to focus on in future developments.

Design and Implementation of a Novel General-purpose Enterprise Application Business Infrastructure Software Platform

Platform-based development is currently the dominant development method of enterprise application, but the features provided by current mainstream enterprise application development platforms focus on technical aspects rather than business, so it lead to a high degree of difficulty and heavy workload during the building of specific enterprise applications. Other platforms might offer some better business-oriented features, but at the same time they have strong industry limitations. This paper presents a novel general-purpose enterprise application business infrastructure software platform, in which the technology complexity is encapsulated in the bottom, so the technical ability requirement of the user that uses platform to build specific enterprise application is largely reduced. Whether user can successfully build an enterprise application through platform is mainly depended on their cognitive level of the enterprise business. Enterprise applications built upon the platform can agilely respond to the changes of business. The efficiency and flexibility of the prototype platform built with the ideas and methods have gotten an initial validation from the simulation construction of a certain civil aviation airport prototype information system.

Improving data management and dissemination in web based information systems by semantic enrichment of descriptive data aspects

The German–Vietnamese water-related information system for the Mekong Delta (WISDOM) project supports business processes in Integrated Water Resources Management in Vietnam. Multiple disciplines bring together earth and ground based observation themes, such as environmental monitoring, water management, demographics, economy, information technology, and infrastructural systems. This paper introduces the components of the web-based WISDOM system including data, logic and presentation tier. It focuses on the data models upon which the database management system is built, including techniques for tagging or linking metadata with the stored information. The model also uses ordered groupings of spatial, thematic and temporal reference objects to semantically tag datasets to enable fast data retrieval, such as finding all data in a specific administrative unit belonging to a specific theme. A spatial database extension is employed by the PostgreSQL database. This object-oriented database was chosen over a relational database to tag spatial objects to tabular data, improving the retrieval of census and observational data at regional, provincial, and local areas. While the spatial database hinders processing raster data, a “work-around” was built into WISDOM to permit efficient management of both raster and vector data. The data model also incorporates styling aspects of the spatial datasets through styled layer descriptions (SLD) and web mapping service (WMS) layer specifications, allowing retrieval of rendered maps. Metadata elements of the spatial data are based on the ISO19115 standard. XML structured information of the SLD and metadata are stored in an XML database. The data models and the data management system are robust for managing the large quantity of spatial objects, sensor observations, census and document data. The operational WISDOM information system prototype contains modules for data management, automatic data integration, and web services for data retrieval, analysis, and distribution. The graphical user interfaces facilitate metadata cataloguing, data warehousing, web sensor data analysis and thematic mapping.

Personalizing map content to improve task completion efficiency

Significant interaction challenges arise in both developing and using interactive map applications. Users encounter problems of information overload in using interactive maps to complete tasks. This is further exacerbated by device limitations and interaction constraints in increasingly popular mobile platforms. Application developers must then address restrictions related to screen size and limited bandwidth in order to effectively display maps on mobile devices. In order to address issues of user information overload and application efficiency in interactive map applications, we have developed a novel approach for delivering personalized vector maps. Ongoing task interactions between users and maps are monitored and captured implicitly in order to infer individual and group preferences related to specific map feature content. Personalized interactive maps that contain spatial feature content tailored specifically to users' individual preferences are then generated. Our approach addresses spatial information overload by providing only the map information necessary and sufficient to suit user interaction preferences, thus simplifying the completion of tasks performed with interactive maps. In turn, tailoring map content to specific user preferences considerably reduces the size of vector data sets necessary to transmit and render maps on mobile devices. We have developed a geographic information system prototype, MAPPER (MAP PERsonalization), that implements our approach. Experimental evaluations show that the use of personalized maps helps users complete their tasks more efficiently and can reduce information overload.

Anamneses-Based Internet Information Supply: Can a Combination of an Expert System and Meta-Search Engine Help Consumers find the Health Information they Require?

An increasing number of people search for health information online. During the last 10 years various researchers have determined the requirements for an ideal consumer health information system. The aim of this study was to figure out, whether medical laymen can find a more accurate diagnosis for a given anamnesis via the developed prototype health information system than via ordinary internet search.In a randomized controlled trial, the prototype information system was evaluated by the assessment of two sample cases. Participants had to determine the diagnosis of a patient with a headache via information found searching the web. A patient’s history sheet and a computer with internet access were provided to the participants and they were guided through the study by an especially designed study website. The intervention group used the prototype information system; the control group used common search engines and portals. The numbers of correct diagnoses in each group were compared.A total of 140 (60/80) participants took part in two study sections. In the first case, which determined a common diagnosis, both groups did equally well. In the second section, which determined a less common and more complex case, the intervention group did significantly better (P=0.031) due to the tailored information supply.Using medical expert systems in combination with a portal searching meta-search engine represents a feasible strategy to provide reliable patient-tailored information and can ultimately contribute to patient safety with respect to information found via the internet.

A tool for modeling form type check constraints and complex functionalities of business applications

IIS*Case is a software tool that provides information system modeling and prototypes generation. At the level of platform independent model specifications, IIS*Case provides conceptual modeling of database schemas that include specifications of various database constraints, such as domain, not null, key and unique constraints, as well as various kinds of inclusion dependencies. It also provides conceptual modeling of business applications. In the paper, we present new concepts and a tool embedded into IIS*Case, that is aimed at supporting specification of check constraints. We present a domain specific language for specifying check constraints and a tool that enables visually oriented design and parsing check constraints. Also, we present concepts and a tool that is aimed at supporting specification of complex (i.e. 'nonstandard') functionalities of business applications. It is provided visually oriented and platform independent specification of business application functions.
