Temperature related to the spatial heterogeneity of wetland soil total nitrogen content in a frozen zone

Changes in soil total nitrogen (N) content would affect wetland function and the global N cycle. Determination of spatial heterogeneity controlling factors of wetland soil total N content per unit mass is essential to assess responses of ecosystem N cycle to global change. However, such information is limited in permafrost zones because few soil profiles have been acquired and methods to predict spatial distributions of wetland soil total N content in large areas are inefficient, which increase uncertainty in evaluations of N cycle at national or global scales. To determine the spatial heterogeneity of wetland soil total N content at different soil depths and frozen zones and the factors controlling wetland soil total N content in the frozen zones of Northeast China, the spatial pattern of wetland soil total N content was investigated by using a random forest method that combined field samples with environmental factors. Vertically, wetland soil total N content decreased with increasing soil depth, with the highest content in the top soil layer (0–30 cm). Spatially, wetland soil total N content decreased from northwest to southeast, with relatively high total N content in a continuous permafrost zone and relatively low total N content in a seasonally frozen zone. The overall coefficient of variation of wetland soil total N content in the frozen zones of Northeast was 29.58 %, indicating moderate variation. Land surface temperature, mean annual temperature, and mean annual humidity significantly affected total N content in 0–30 and 30–60 cm soil layers, suggesting that variations in temperature and humidity altered sequestration processes of wetland soil total N content. In the 60–100 cm soil layer, compared with other environmental factors, mean annual humidity, altitude, and mean annual precipitation had the greatest influence on the spatial distribution of wetland soil total N content. The study unravels the spatial pattern of soil total N content in frozen zones of Northeast China and reflects the direct and indirect effects of environmental factors on total N content. This provides a basis for the management and protection of wetland ecosystems.

The Impact of Restoration and Protection Based on Sustainable Development Goals on Urban Wetland Health: A Case of Yinchuan Plain Urban Wetland Ecosystem, Ningxia, China

Drawing heavily upon the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an SDG–pressure–state–response (PSR)–ecological–economic–social (EES) model and an index system for wetland ecosystem health assessment were constructed from the three dimensions of environment, economy, and society. By using the Yinchuan Plain urban wetlands in the Yellow River Basin of China as a case study, their ecological health status from 2000 to 2020 was systematically evaluated by integrating information from remote sensing technology, geographic information technology, field sampling, information entropy (IE), a landscape index, and a Comprehensive Evaluation Index. The results show that the restoration and protection of wetland ecosystems have achieved remarkable results in the Yinchuan Plain. The wetland ecological health index has significantly increased from 0.26 to 0.67, which is an increase of 157.7%, and the health level increased from poor (II) to sub-healthy (IV). Factors restricting the healthy development of wetland ecology in the Yinchuan Plain include wetland construction, investment, population density, the number of tourists, and fertilizer use. The research results show that the wetland restoration and protection have achieved specific environmental, economic, and social results in the Yinchuan Plain. However, we also need to pay attention to increasing the investment in wetland environmental governance, strictly controlling the intensity of land use and the total amount of chemical fertilizer applied in various regions, scientifically carrying out wetland restoration and protection, reasonably coordinating the relationship between environment and society, and providing technical and decision-making support for wetland management and protection. This study provides a reference for the ecological governance and sustainable development of wetlands in large river basins worldwide.

Wetland vegetation cover changes and its response to climate changes across Heilongjiang-Amur River Basin.

The Heilongjiang-Amur River Basin is one of the largest and most complex aquatic systems in Asia, comprising diverse wetland resources. The wetland vegetation in mid-high latitude areas has high natural value and is sensitive to climate changes. In this study, we investigated the wetland vegetation cover changes and associated responses to climate change in the Heilongjiang-Amur River Basin from 2000 to 2018 based on the growing season (May to September) climate and LAI data. Our results indicated that the wetland LAI increased at 0.014 m2·m-2/yr across Heilongjiang-Amur River Basin with the regional climate showed wetting and warming trends. On a regional scale, wetland vegetation in China and Russia had positive partial correlation with solar radiation and minimum air temperature, with precipitation showing a slight lag effect. In contrast, wetland vegetation in Mongolia had positive partial correlation with precipitation. These correlations were further investigated at different climate intervals. We found the precipitation is positively correlated with LAI in the warm regions while is negatively correlated with LAI in the wet regions, indicating an increase in precipitation is beneficial for the growth of wetland vegetation in heat sufficient areas, and when precipitation exceeds a certain threshold, it will hinder the growth of wetland vegetation. In the cold regions, we found solar radiation and minimum air temperature are positively correlated with LAI, suggesting SR and minimum air temperature instead of mean air temperature and maximum air temperature play more important roles in affecting the wetland vegetation growth in the heat limited areas. The LAI was found to be negatively correlated with maximum air temperature in the arid areas, indicating excessive temperature would inhibit the wetland vegetation growth when the water is limited. Our investigation can provide a scientific foundation for the trilateral region in wetland ecosystem protection and is beneficial for a more comprehensive understanding of the responses of wetlands in the middle and high latitudes to climate change.

Construction of wetland ecosystem model framework in Phoenix Mountain National Forest Park Nature Reserve in Harbin and application case studies

Context The wetland ecosystem of Harbin Fenghuangshan National Forest Park Nature Reserve is fragile. Aims To establish a scientific and reasonable model framework for dynamic monitoring and ecological health assessment of wetlands, which is conducive to early warning, protection and management of wetland ecosystems. Methods On the basis of the full consideration of energy flow, material circulation, ecological environment and interspecific relationship, this paper proposed an ecosystem model framework. The pressure–state–response (PSR) model was used to build the evaluation index system of wetland-ecosystem health in Harbin Fenghuangshan National Forest Park. The data of each indicator are extracted and standardised through the analytic hierarchy process. Key results The results showed that the ecosystem pressure index of Harbin Fenghuangshan National Forest Park wetland was 0.52, indicating that it is in a subhealth state. The degree of health was 0.603, indicating a good condition. The comprehensive response index was 0.615, which was a positive response. The comprehensive degree of health was 0.577, indicating a subhealth state. Conclusion and implications The management and protection of wetland ecosystem in Harbin Fenghuangshan National Forest Park need to be strengthened urgently.

Mapping Phragmites australis Aboveground Biomass in the Momoge Wetland Ramsar Site Based on Sentinel-1/2 Images

Phragmites australis (P. australis) is one of the most important plant species found in wetland ecosystems, and its aboveground biomass (AGB) is a key indicator for assessing the quality or health of a wetland site. In this study, we combined Sentinel-1/2 images and field observation data collected in 2020, to delineate the distribution of P. australis in the Momoge Ramsar Wetland site by using a random forest method, and further, to estimate AGB by comparing multiple linear regression models. The results showed that the overall classification accuracy of P. australis using the random forest method was 89.13% and the P. australis area in the site was 135.74 km2 in 2020. Among various remote sensing variables, the largest correlation coefficient was observed between dry weight of AGB of P. australis and Sentinel-2 red edge B7, and between fresh weight of P. australis AGB and red edge B5. The optimal models for estimating dry and fresh weight of P. australis AGB were multiple linear regression models, with an accuracy of 75.4% and 69.2%, respectively. In 2020, it was estimated that the total fresh weight of P. australis AGB in this Ramsar site was 21.2 × 107 kg and the total dry weight was 7.2 × 107 kg. The larger weight of P. australis AGB was identified mainly at central and western sites. The application of Sentinel-2 red-edge band for AGB estimation can significantly improve the model estimation accuracy. The findings of this study will provide a scientific basis for the management and protection of wetland ecosystems and sustainable utilization of P. australis resources.

Wetland Utilization and Adaptation Practice of a Coastal Megacity: A Case Study of Chongming Island, Shanghai, China

Coastal urban areas are faced with risks induced by global warming and sea level rise, which puts pressure on regional sustainable development. In particular, land use adjustment is closely related to climate change for a coastal megacity. Coastal wetlands on the edge of the megacity represent a vulnerable ecosystem and a key area in terms of the resilient adaptation strategy. However, the interrelationship between the development of these wetlands and the megacity’s adaptation practice has not been sufficiently analyzed. From a historical perspective, based on document synthesis and field investigation, we attempt in this study to reveal long-term land use stages and driving factors in association with urban marginal wetlands, with a special reference to eastern Chongming Island, Shanghai. On such a basis, the future adaptation strategy of the megacity is evaluated. The analytical results show that this island has witnessed three periods of time for wetland utilization: traditional land use for salt production, fishery and agriculture before 1950, industrialization with rapid reclamation during 1950–2001, and the land use pattern orientated toward wetland ecosystem protection after 2002. The driving forces include sediment budget on the coast, wetland morphodynamic processes, sea level rise, population growth, and resource management policy changes. Transformation occurred between the wetland utilization stages in response to the changes of these forces. Furthermore, facing future climate change, there are different options of adaptation, e.g., retreatment and adherence. It may not be suitable for coastal cities with a large population to take the first option. It will be suitable for coastal communities to adhere to the location, if solutions to the problems of flooding risk, coastal erosion, and the maintenance of coastal facilities can be found. For eastern Chongming wetlands, as a key experimental area for ecosystem-oriented development in Shanghai, the transformation from the reclamation-oriented utilization toward the protection of wetland ecosystems represents the first step toward the latter option. We suggest that the next steps would be to maintain the ecological niche of the wetlands, to create new approaches to coastal engineering with contributions from the ecosystem, and to provide better ecosystem services.

Identification of Native and Invasive Vegetation Communities in a Tidal Flat Wetland Using Gaofen-1 Imagery

Biological invasion by Spartina alterniflora is widespread in coastal wetlands in China, threatening native vegetation. Obtaining the distribution of native and invasive vegetation at the small community scale is important to understand the invasion mechanism of S. alterniflora and the protection of wetland ecosystems. Remote sensing images can quickly and effectively identify vegetation at a large scale, which can have a considerable influence on the protection of biological diversity. Although Landsat-like space borne sensors have been applied in the monitoring of invasive species in wetlands, their spatial resolutions are often coarser than those of small communities of invasive species. To identify small-scale native (Phragmites australis and Scirpus mariqueter) and invasive (S. alterniflora) vegetation communities around Chongming Island in eastern China, we first investigated the performance of four classifiers based on spectral features. Then, textural features of Gaofen-1 images under an appropriate textural window size were added. Furthermore, a comprehensive classification (CC) method generated by multiple classification features was proposed to obtain a reliable classification, and CC was further improved by considering the properties of neighbouring pixels. The results demonstrated that (i) the random forest (RF) classifier reached a higher overall accuracy (OA) than all the other classifiers; (ii) adding textural features slightly increased the OA, but the production accuracy (PA) for P. australis and the user accuracy (UA) for S. alterniflora decreased; (iii) the CC method improved OA by up to 4.12 %, and accounting for the neighbouring pixels improved the OA to 93.96 %. The comprehensive method effectively improved not only OA but also PA and UA for the vegetation communities, and it can be used in other wetlands.

A dynamic biomass model of emergent aquatic vegetation under different water levels and salinity

Emergent aquatic vegetation (EAV) is an important part of wetland ecosystems that provide multiple ecological services. However, human activities and natural changes often influence wetland hydrological regimes such as water levels, salinity, and other factors, which greatly influence the survival and growth of wetland plants. Based on field measurements and control experiments, we developed an EAV model to simulate biomass dynamics under changing conditions of water levels and salinity. This model successfully reproduced the seasonal biomass variation of three typical emergent plants, Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia and Scirpus mariqueter, and simulated the response of EVA biomass under multiple scenarios of water levels and salinity in the Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve (CDNR), Shanghai, China. Results suggest that there is a negative correlation between salinity and biomass. An optimal range of water levels are suitable for EAV, and biomass will decrease when the water levels are below or above their optimal range. Applying this dynamic EAV model is a cost-effective approach to find a sustainable and nature-based solution to managing and predicting wetland vegetation changes. The model and approach used in this study may provide a sustainable and nature-based solution for management and protection of wetland ecosystems, and may be transferrable to other wetland systems as well.

Sustainable Water Resources Management in an Arid Area Using a Coupled Optimization-Simulation Modeling

Severe water scarcity in recent years has magnified the economic, social, and environmental significance of water stress globally, making optimal planning in water resources necessary for sustainable socio-economic development. One of the regions that is most affected by this is the Sistan region and its Hamoun wetland, located in south-east Iran. Water policies are essential to sustain current basin ecosystem services, maintaining a balance between conflicting demands from agriculture and the protection of wetland ecosystems. In the present study, a multi-objective optimization model is linked with the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) software to optimize water allocation decisions over multiple years. We formulate and parameterize a multi-objective optimization problem where the net economic benefit from agriculture and the supply of environmental requirements were maximized, to analyze the trade-off between different stakeholders. This problem is modeled and solved for the study area with detailed agricultural, socio-economic, and environmental data for 30 years and quantification of ecosystem services. By plotting Pareto sets, we investigate the trade-offs between the two conflicting objectives and evaluate a possible compromise. The results are analyzed by comparing purely economic versus multi-objective scenarios on the Pareto front. Finally, the disadvantages and advantages of these scenarios are also qualitatively described to help the decision process for water resources managers.

The ecological stoichiometric ratios of soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, and their influencing factors were studied in three cover types using stratified sampling in the Dunhuang Yangguan wetland. The results showed that:(1) The trends of C/N were high < medium < low cover, whereas the trends of C/P and N/P were low < medium < high cover at 0-20, 20-40, and 40-60 cm soil layers. (2) The soil C/N, C/P, and N/P of high cover increased with increasing soil depth, similarly to the C/N of medium cover, and the C/P, N/P decreased initially and then increased with soil depth, as did the C/N, C/P and N/P of low cover. (3) At 0-60 cm soil depths, soil moisture was negatively correlated with C/N (P < 0.01), but was positively correlated with C/P and N/P (P < 0.01). Soil salinity was negatively correlated with C/P and N/P (P < 0.01) at 0-60 cm soil depths. Soil pH was positively correlated with C/P and N/P (P < 0.05) at 0-60 cm soil depths. Soil total phosphorus was negatively correlated with C/N (P < 0.05), soil total nitrogen was positively correlated with C/P (P < 0.01), and soil organic carbon was positively correlated with N/P (P < 0.01) at 0-60 cm soil depths. The process of establishing high-value conservation networks took into account biodiversity features of different levels and dimensions in the Sanjiang Plain. The process also accounted for the irreplaceability of catchments, since these planning units fall under the framework of SCP. In the horizontal dimension, we had two conservation level objectives, one for the ecosystem level and one for the species level. Eight types of marsh wetland systems, all lake ecosystems, and high conservation value river wetland systems were selected as ecosystem level conservation surrogates. Thirteen endangered birds and four endangered mammals were selected as species level conservation surrogates. In the vertical dimension, we chose 3 effective underground water distribution areas. Ecosystem conservation targets were set based on ecological function value, rarity and threat trends. Species conservation targets were set based on level of endangerment, scope for survival, and population growth/decline trends. Protection targets were set for water resources according to their runoff modulus and recharge modulus. SCP utilizes the key concept of irreplaceability, which is a measure, varying from zero to one, indicating the importance of an area (planning unit) for the achievement of regional conservation targets. A map of irreplaceability values is therefore a base map of conservation planning. Finally, we combined irreplaceability values with vulnerability factors (factors threatening the ecology of the region) to design different planning options. Results were as follows:(1) High conservation value areas accounted for about 16% of the whole region and were generally distributed along river and lake ecosystems. Specifically, at headwater intersections, such as the intersection of the Heilongjiang and Wusulijiang, the junction of the Tongjiang and Fuyuan, the marsh wetlands between Fujin and Baoqing, the waterfront in Hulin, and the middle part of Luobei, the northeast Hegang, northeast of Yilan, and the south Muling.(2) Lake ecosystems and target species were well-protected in existing conservation areas. They accounted for 83.90% and 81.25% of the whole conservation network respectively. After the prioritization, these percentages increased only slightly to 86.65% and 100%.(3) Marsh, riverine and wetland ecosystem protection by the existing conservation network was less effective. Prioritization would afford an increase in marsh wetlands (from 22.88% to more than 50%), riverine wetlands (from 16.20% to 33.92%), and underground water resources (from just 2.01% to 12.05%).(4) Vulnerability analysis showed high vulnerability areas on the Sanjiang Plain were mainly distributed in Jiamusi, south of Hegang, north of Shuangyashan and Jixi, the middle of Huanan and Luobei, and the intersection of the Fujin and Suibin.The work detailed above indicates that future conservation planning must continue to preserve well-protected ecosystems and species and emphasizes the need for protection and management of marsh, riverine and wetland ecosystems, especially underground water resources. Quantification of resource irreplaceability and vulnerability were evaluated as a supplement to this future conservation planning. The authors combined irreplaceability and vulnerability indexes to propose three scenarios (the ecological value prioritized scenario, the rescue prioritized scenario and the economic avoidance prioritized scenario), and provide recommendations for decision-makers under each scenario in terms of ecological threats.This irreplaceability-based biodiversity conservation planning method integrates protected objects, conservation targets and contributions into one framework and expresses the information in a quantified form. Quantifications enables conservation planning and prioritizing work to be more scientific and better visualized, providing a feasible and effective framework for natural reserve network establishment and prioritization. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

Remote sensing technology can be used effectively to extract information of wetland vegetation, which directly reflects their growth and development. Hence the research is very significant for the environment monitoring and protection of wetland ecosystems. This paper discusses the quantitative relationship between vegetation spectrum index and dry biomass of vegetation, based on the remote sensing data from China HJ-1A satellite and synchronous field sampling data, choosing the Zhengzhou Yellow River Wetland Nature Reserve as the study area. The methods based on vegetation indexes in this study are mainly used in vegetation biomass inversion in a large area, and have conducted quite successful algorithms and models. While a single vegetation index as input factor has a high accuracy and sensitivity in fitting the vegetation biomass model, its prediction result encounter larger errors and cannot accurately reflect true information of vegetation biomass. Authors in this paper puts variety of vegetation indexes together as the comprehensive input factors, and estimates vegetation biomass in wetland by using regression analysis method. Therefore, it improves largely the precision and reliability of vegetation biomass inversion based on multiple vegetation indexes. In this paper, the biomass of vegetation is abstracted as a phenomenon, while different kinds of vegetation indexes are considered as different influencing factors. The relationships between them are conceptualized into different mathematical models. Authors inspect the precision of inversion by comparing the estimate results from the two kinds of methods after their using the SCRM (single curve regression model) biomass method and MLRM (multiple linear regression model) biomass method respectively. Results showed that the MLRM have good precision and prediction ability, which can be well applied to estimate the wetland vegetation. The model test is significant (hitting a level of 0.000), while the model correlation coefficient is 0.9791, fitting accuracy reaches 29.8 g/m2. The model prediction results has a system error of 49.9 g/m2, the determine coefficient is 0.8742, the RMS error is 67.2 g/m2, estimation of dry vegetation biomass total to 6.849199 t/hm2 in study area, with the actual biomass estimated dry biomass has a difference of 0.323 749 t/hm2, the result is 6.525 450 t/hm2, and the relative error is 4.73%, which shows an accurate estimation on the biomass of wetland vegetation by using vegetation indexes extracted from HJ-1A remote sensing data, combined with field sampling data. Wetland is one of the three large ecological systems globally, which takes a key role on the plant biodiversity protection. And it has a great environmental function and lots ecological benefits as the most productive ecological system. Method of the MLRM has a better precision and forecasting ability by comparing that of SCRM in vegetation biomass inversion when used to estimating wetland vegetation biomass. As a new method of the vegetation detection and estimation based on remote sensing technology, it has a large application value to the ecological resource management and wetland ecological environment protection. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

Study on Bioremediation of Oil Contaminated Wetlands in Daqing Oil Field Development Zones

Daqing Oil Field brings enormous economic benefits to the city of Daqing; however, it also results in serious contamination of adjacent wetlands. The current study will take Qunyingxi Lake as example. This lake is typical oil contaminated wetland of Daqing Oil Field Development Zones. And choose to use two biological agents, they have been screened these two years, and their implementation of localization will continue. Different amount of two biological agents were put into four test sites, then collect samples and monitor them before and after putting biological agents. Test the concentration of COD, BOD5, NH3-N, TP, TN, volatile phenol and oil, et al. Take the grey clustering method to evaluate water quality data and analyze the repaired effects of biological agents in oil contaminated wetland. To provide the effective protection of wetland ecosystems in Daqing Oil Field Development Zone and a scientific basis for study on bioremediation of oil contaminated wetland.
