Creative space and scientific trajectory of academician V.N. Chernigovsky – first academic secretary of the department of physiology of the USSR Academy of Sciences

The article analyzes the prerequisites and conditions for choosing Academician V.N. Chernigovsky, academician-secretary of the Department of Physiology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, created in 1963. For this purpose, the scientific potential and creative success, career growth and individual qualities of Academician V.N. Chernigovsky within the framework of the methodological approach of “protected space” were considered. He was characterized by a high level of achievement motivation, he had high efficiency, and was characterized by thoroughness and accuracy in carrying out scientific work. V.N. Chernigovsky successfully developed a new direction in the field of visceral physiology and made a significant contribution to the idea of interoception. He worked hard, achieved results step by step, which added up, enhancing their combined effect and creating the basis for his recognition and career advancement. V.N. Chernigovsky had significant administrative experience in leading two leading physiological institutes. Creative space of academician V.N. Chernigovsky, his scientific trajectory and personal characteristics brought him to the forefront as a candidate for the position of Academician-Secretary of the new Department of Physiology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Election of Academician V.N. Chernigovsky’s appointment to the position of academic secretary was not an accident, a game of chance or luck. This was the result of his intensive scientific and organizational work, which were predetermined by his personal qualities.

The cage as an educational and therapeutic tool for dogs: Results of a dog’s owners questionnaire survey

IntroductionThe primary motivation for dog ownership is companionship, significantly enhancing the quality of life for both dogs and their owners. However, behavioral problems can strain this bond, leading many owners to resort to caging as a management strategy. This study aims to examine the frequency of cage use for educational and behavioral reasons, assess its efficacy in modifying behaviors, and explore potential welfare implications. Materials and methodsA 41-question survey was disseminated via social networks from January to June 2021, collecting data on various aspects related to dogs, including caging history, duration, type of cage, outcomes for training purposes, behavioral modification plans, and welfare impact. The survey, available in French, English, and Hebrew, gathered responses from 1305 dog owners across 23 countries. ResultsThe study found that 25.4 % of respondents used cages for their dogs. Neutered female dogs were more likely to be caged than their counterparts. The majority of caged dogs were puppies aged 6 months or younger, typically caged for training purposes. According to owners report, training goals were more easily achieved than behavioral goals, with dogs caged for behavioral conditions exhibiting more signs of distress. DiscussionThe findings highlight the prevalent use of caging for various purposes. If the study outcomes show an overall low level of discomfort for caged dogs, they also emphasize that signs of distress significantly increase when the cage is used for managing behavioral issues. The study underscores the need for enhanced education for veterinarians and trainers to reduce unnecessary caging and promote alternative management strategies. Future research should incorporate objective measures of behavior and welfare, explore the efficacy of alternative strategies, and investigate cultural factors influencing caging practices. ConclusionCrating can serve educational purposes with minimal welfare impact when used appropriately. However, it is ineffective and potentially detrimental when used for behavioral therapy in dogs with behavioral disorders. Owners should seek professional guidance and closely monitor their dogs for signs of distress when using crates. Using a crate as a personal and protected space can be beneficial if the dog retains control over its use.

X (Twitter): A Protective Platform for Personal Revelations Among Indonesian LGBTQ Adolescents

Social media provides a protective space for LGBTQ adolescents to share their experiences and self-disclosures. Digital platforms such as X (Twitter) offer an environment that is distinct and more open compared to the conservative attitudes commonly found in traditional societies. However, not all social media platforms provide a safe space for LGBTQ adolescents to openly share their identities and personal experiences, highlighting an urgent need to create safer and more educational digital spaces. This study employs a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach to understand the self-disclosure experiences of LGBTQ adolescents on the X platform. The findings reveal that the X platform plays a crucial role in supporting the self-disclosure of LGBTQ adolescents in Indonesia. The motivations for self-disclosure include the desire to acquire and disseminate knowledge, personal expression, self-acceptance, and involvement in LGBTQ movements and groups. The feedback received in self-disclosure encompasses positive responses such as acceptance and recognition, as well as negative responses such as rejection and exclusion. The consequences of self-disclosure are divided into internal benefits, such as self-actualization and increased self-esteem, and external benefits such as social connections and recognition from the community. This study provides insights for social media platform developers to create more inclusive and supportive environments, despite limitations related to sample size and other factors that may influence the results. Future research is recommended to expand the sample size and explore the long-term impacts of online community support on the well-being of LGBTQ adolescents.

Mixed-Method Evaluation to Understand Clinician Perspectives of a Program to Implement High-Intensity Resistance Rehabilitation Into Skilled Nursing Facilities

ObjectiveTo assess rehabilitation clinicians’ viewpoints regarding a multicomponent implementation program aimed at promoting high-intensity resistance rehabilitation (HIR), as well as practical implications for its use in skilled nursing facility (SNF) rehabilitation. DesignProspective convergent mixed-method design. SettingEight rural SNFs within the Department of Veterans Affairs. ParticipantsPhysical rehabilitation clinicians (physical and occupational therapists, physical and occupational therapy assistants, recreational therapists, and kinesiotherapists) who engaged with the implementation program (n=38). InterventionsClinicians engaged with the multicomponent implementation program to promote the use of HIR in clinical practice. The program components included clinician training (i.e., virtual didactic modules with synchronous case discussions), provision of resources (e.g., equipment, job aids), and facilitated implementation (e.g., external implementation facilitator support, distributed tips and tricks). Main Outcome MeasuresAcceptability of Intervention Measure, Training Acceptability Rating Scale, study-specific questionnaires, and qualitative focus groups exploring perceived acceptability, feasibility, and effect on work experience. ResultsQuestionnaires revealed high levels of implementation program acceptability and perceived effect, alongside moderate levels of feasibility. Focus group themes supported these findings, explaining high acceptability and effect through differentiation from other trainings and prolonged engagement. Feasibility results were explained qualitatively by facilitatory factors (i.e., team participation, reduced caseloads, training characteristics) and inhibitory factors (i.e., training timing, self-paced scheduling logistics, lack of protected time and space). There was no reported negative effect on clinician work experience. ConclusionsAccording to SNF clinician perspectives, a positive HIR implementation experience may be enhanced through implementation programs that provide prolonged engagement and a self-paced structure with built-in accountability. Leadership and organizational support appear important to protect time and space for clinicians who experience competing priorities to successfully facilitate evidence uptake. Future work can evaluate the applicability across various contexts beyond rural VA SNFs.

Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Position Statement: Breastfeeding in Emergencies.

Background: During emergencies, including natural disasters and armed conflict, breastfeeding is critically important. Breastfeeding provides reliable nutrition and protection against infectious diseases, without the need for clean water, feeding implements, electricity, or external supplies. Key Information: Protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding should be an integral part of all emergency preparedness plans. Breastfeeding specialists should be part of plan development. Emergency protocols should include breastfeeding specialists among emergency relief personnel, provide culturally sensitive environments for breastfeeding, and prioritize caregivers of infants in food/water distribution. Emergency relief personnel should be aware that dehydration and missed feedings can impact milk production, but stress alone does not. Emergency support should focus on keeping mothers and infants together and providing private and/or protected spaces for mothers to breastfeed or express milk. Emergency support should also focus on rapidly identifying mothers with breastfeeding difficulties and breastfeeding mothers and infants who are separated, so their needs can be prioritized. Breastfeeding support should be available to all women experiencing difficulties, including those needing reassurance. Nonbreastfed infants should be identified as a priority group requiring support. Relactation, wet-nursing, and donor milk should be considered for nonbreastfed infants. No donations of commercial milk formula (CMF), feeding bottles or teats, or breast pumps should be accepted in emergencies. The distribution of CMF must be highly controlled, provided only when infants cannot be breastfed and accompanied by a comprehensive package of support. Recommendations: Protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding should be included in all emergency preparedness planning and in training of personnel.

Protecting place: Norway, spatial imaginaries, and the governance of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in pig and poultry farming

Norway has undertaken specific governance measures to eradicate and control MRSA and ESBL E. coli, two AMR bacterium, in pigs and poultry respectively. These measures are unique in the context of AMR governance in Europe and globally, and extend AMR governance in agriculture beyond a focus on reducing antibiotics use, towards direct efforts to control the prevalence of two AMR bacteria of concern. Based on interviews with public health, animal health, and agricultural industry organisations, this article contributes to a growing body of literature examining practices and policies of AMR governance and work on the intersection between spatial imaginaries and AMR governance. The article specifically analyses the different discursive dimensions of a dominant spatial imaginary encompassing Norway as a protective, protected and purifiable space. Within this context, AMR bacteria, as a wicked problem eluding human boundaries and barriers, is imagined as being directly actionable because the Norwegian agriculture and its spatial vulnerabilities are positioned as sufficiently stabilised that they can now be controlled. Broader agricultural and AMR governance arrangements in turn work to sustain social and material barriers to new AMR bacteria (re-)entering Norway. This sustained mode of action has arguably succeeded in reshaping Norwegian agriculture to the exclusion of these AMR bacterium from pigs and poultry. These efforts reinforce the spatial imaginary and protectionist regulatory practices that sustain Norway as a protected place.

Navigating Age Diversity in Volunteer Teams: Barriers and Enablers of Teamwork

Despite demographic change leading to increased age diversity among volunteers, extant research offers limited guidance on how organizations can manage age-diverse volunteer teams. In this study, we delve into the dynamics of age diversity in a volunteer context by analyzing the case of German World Shops. We collected extensive ethnographic and interview data from age-diverse volunteer teams over a period of 2.5 years. In our analysis, we identified three overarching barriers to age-diverse teamwork—resistance to change and innovation, communication preferences, and power dynamics—and three enablers—creating space to experiment, ensuring protected spaces, and fostering spaces of encounter. In doing so, we contribute to the existing literature on diversity in volunteering and offer guidance for volunteer coordinators to foster collaboration and the build-up of relational capital among volunteers to create successful age-diverse volunteer teams. Moreover, this research opens avenues for further exploration into this emerging and critical phenomenon.

The legal, policy, institutional and programmatic context for protecting children against online sexual exploitation in Tunisia

AbstractEvidence is absent in the legal, policy and programmatic landscape of online child sexual exploitation in countries in the Global South. Our work begins to contribute to filling this literature gap, drawing evidence from Tunisia, one of the least studied countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). We reviewed legal and policy documents directly or indirectly connected to online child sexual exploitation, complemented with interviews from diverse actors in the child protection space at the national and sub‐national levels. We note that Tunisia is a signatory to several international and regional treaties and conventions that can be leveraged to tackle online sexual exploitation of children. Still, these have yet to be fully exploited for the benefit of children. Furthermore, we observed several disparate laws at the country level. These laws are scattered in many legal documents, and some aspects could be more specific, but currently not, which poses significant legal challenges to protecting children. Finally, many institutions implementing programmes in this space create less coordination and sometimes confusion. At best, interventions seem ad hoc without any clear mandate of specificity in institutional leadership. The implications of the findings for policies and programmes are highlighted.

Nonviolent Knowledge(s) and Unarmed Civilian Protection

Abstract In its claim to take the human, and in particular the civilian, as the referent object of security, human security seeks to build not only physical but ontological security for those who live and work in conflict-affected communities; those who shape conflict and are shaped by it. Unarmed civilian protection (ucp), a method of civilian-to-civilian and civilian self-protection, is led by the civilians who make up conflict-affected communities. Rather than ‘including’ local actors in their protection or seeking to extract information about conflict from them, ucp is a practice in which local and international actors work together to co-create and build spaces of protection. This protection is based on conflict knowledge which enables nonviolent protection methods to be practiced effectively. This knowledge comes not from armed actors nor state delegates, but rather from and with conflict-affected communities. Embracing civilian experiential knowledge of armed and violent conflict, ucp instrumentalises civilians, their knowledge(s) of and relationships to armed conflict in the creation of protection networks. Taking ucp as a case study of nonviolent protection, and ucp practitioners as conflict knowledge producers, this article argues that civilian experiential knowledge of armed conflict is essential to the pursuit of civilian protection. Rather than being a prescriptive set of aims, the human security agenda must take seriously the experiences of civilians affected by conflict, centring their experiential knowledge(s) and agency in order to move beyond the unintentional yet harmful (re)production of binary security logics.

Integrating “quality-risk-demand” framework and circuit theory to identify spatial range and priority area of ecological security pattern in a rapidly urbanizing landscape

Regional ecological security pattern (ESP) can provide the basis for regional territorial spatial planning and urban ecological protection. Taking the Wuhan metropolitan area as the study area, a binary logistic regression model was used to quantify the evolutionary driving forces and transformation risk of ecological land. An identification framework of ecological source based on “quality-risk-demand” was constructed to identify ecological source by calculating the ecological land comprehensive value from three aspects of ecological land quality, degradation risk, and human demand. The ecological resistance surface was calculated according to land-use type and nighttime light data, further using circuit theory to identify the spatial range and its key areas of ecological corridors, and to identify the specific spatial range of ESP and their priority area. The results showed ecological sources were 382.4 km2, accounting for 17.3% of the metropolitan area. The area of ecological corridors in the terrestrial ecosystem (TEC) was 14.38 km2, with an average width of 77.8 m, including 4.99 km2 of pinch points and 3.71 km2 of barriers, indicating poor actual connectivity of the TEC. Ecological corridors in the aquatic ecosystem (AEC) were 107.67 km long, including 57.86 km of pinch points and 14.24 km of barriers, indicating poor substitutability of the AEC. Overall, the ESP of “three horizontals, three verticals, and four clusters” were identified, where sources, pinch points and barriers were the priority areas for protection and restoration in constructing it. Existing protection spaces were within the ecological source range, and the identification results of the ecological corridor were highly consistent with the actual situation, verifying the ecological significance of the identification framework. This study focuses on the needs of urban residents, combining the intrinsic quality and extrinsic risks of urban ecological land, proposes an integrated framework for identifying urban ecological sources, identifies the spatial range of ecological corridors and their key areas based on circuit theory, and attempts to provide a quantitative framework and case reference for ESP construction in other urban areas.

IoT-Based Machine Learning System for Physical Intrusion Detection Using Dynamic Temperature and Humidity Observations With Raspberry Pi

This paper presents a system that is able to detect physical intrusion in a specific space based on temperature and humidity change. This specific space was housing hardware components important for information security management infrastructure. Presented system is able to predict that two spaces are connected and that there is a physical breach in protected space. The presented prediction approach involves identifying patterns in historical data, where the subsequent outcomes are already known in advance, and validating these patterns using more recent data. System is implemented using k-Nearest Neighbours, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine algorithms in Python programming language on Raspberry Pi. Real observed data to predict if specific temperature and humidity indicates intrusion were used. This approach can be used to detect intrusions in the room or in other closed space. More specifically thermal equilibrium phenomenon between two spaces after barrier between them are opened was monitored. Through process of supervised learning using labelled data, system was able to detect intrusion by using k-nearest neighbours, random forest, and support vector machine with different accuracy. Presented model shows better results using k-nearest neighbours and support vector machine with accuracy of 100% compared to random forest with accuracy of 95%. The system is low cost because of cheap Raspberry Pi controller and sensors.

The Female Global Scholars Program: A mixed-methods evaluation of a novel intervention to promote the retention and advancement of women in global health research.

Fewer than 25% of global health leadership positions worldwide are held by women, adversely impacting women's health and widening gendered health disparities. The Female Global Scholars (FGS) Program, established in 2018 at Weill Cornell Medicine, is a two-year hybrid training and peer-mentorship program that promotes the retention and advancement of early-career female investigators conducting health research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the FGS Program on individual career advancement, academic productivity, and research self-efficacy. This mixed-methods study followed an explanatory sequential design. Participants completed an electronic survey collecting information on demographics, academic milestones, and research skill competency. Survey data were descriptively analyzed using R (Version 1.4.1106). In-depth interviews explored perceptions of the impact of the FGS Program on career development. The authors independently reviewed and thematically analyzed de-identified transcripts using NVivo (Version 13). In June 2022, twelve participants completed the survey. The median age was 40 years; 90% carried an MD, PhD, or other post-graduate degree. Since joining the FGS Program, respondents achieved a combined total of eight awarded grants, five academic promotions, 12 oral scientific presentations and 35 first-author peer-reviewed publications. Thematic analysis identified four overarching themes: gaining confidence through mimicry; improved self-efficacy to address gendered challenges; real-world application of scientific and career development skills; and building multi-disciplinary communities in a protected female-only space. We demonstrate that this low-cost training and mentorship program successfully addresses critical barriers that impede women's advancement in global health research. Our data may inform the adaptation of this initiative across other academic institutions.

Expectations on biochar as a climate solution in Sweden: Carbon dioxide removal with environmental co-benefits

While carbon dioxide removal is indispensable in net-zero climate policy, incentives to deploy removals are limited. Swedish public support to biochar is one exception. This paper draws on the Swedish case to explore expectations put on biochar and the significance of public support for fulfilling these expectations. The analysis shows that biochar is expected to contribute to several environmental objectives. However, while biochar producers and users voice expectations on strengthening the multifunctionality of landscapes, e.g., improved ecosystem resilience and reduced nutrient run-off, the authorities rather narrowly direct attention to the stability of biochar as a carbon storage. Nevertheless, public support is contributing to a small but important protective space for biochar development through three channels: First, through investment grants, which are crucial for the emerging Swedish biochar production capacity. Second, through demand-pull created by municipalities that specify high environmental safeguards, which favours domestic production over import. Third, indirectly through support of production facilities that enable intermediary activities for gathering and sharing knowledge. However, while recent changes to EU state aid regulation may be a game-changer, EU has until now acted as a barrier to support to carbon dioxide removal. This socio-technical regime resistance, combined with a lack of jointly articulated expectations on biochar, appear to have been preventing deployment on more significant scale.

A baseline approach for probabilistic blast risk analysis of building cladding under external explosions

The state of the practice in blast-resistant applications against explosions is to design the structural components for a prescribed combination of explosive mass and location, namely the design basis threat. In this context, the blast source is represented by specific scenarios, mostly associated with expert judgement, rating systems or code provisions. While offering a useful basis for practical applications, the level of detail can be significantly enhanced within a probabilistic framework for risk assessment. In research practice, plenty simplified probabilistic approaches have been proposed on external explosions in order to perform risk assessment. A rigorous methodology for such an assessment is presented herein, using tools and techniques derived from seismic risk-assessment applications. Specifically, the mean annual frequency of different explosive mass hazards is represented via a recurrence law, while the potential locations are modelled as a 2D spatial distribution, accounting for the various layers of defense that exist around the structure, i.e., perimeter protection, landscape, public or private spaces, etc. The methodology is finally substantiated with the case study of a typical building subjected to potential blast loadings from external aggressors.

Risk perceptions and behaviors concerning rural tourism and economic-political drivers of COVID-19 policy in 2020.

When COVID-19 was first introduced to the United States, state and local governments enacted a variety of policies intended to mitigate the virulence of the epidemic. At the time, the most effective measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 included stay-at-home orders, closing of nonessential businesses, and mask mandates. Although it was well known that regions with high population density and cold climates were at the highest risk for disease spread, rural counties that are economically reliant on tourism were incentivized to enact fewer precautions against COVID-19. The uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the multiple policies to reduce transmission, and the changes in outdoor recreation behavior had a significant impact on rural tourism destinations and management of protected spaces. We utilize fine-scale incidence and demographic data to study the relationship between local economic and political concerns, COVID-19 mitigation measures, and the subsequent severity of outbreaks throughout the continental United States. We also present results from an online survey that measured travel behavior, health risk perceptions, knowledge and experience with COVID-19, and evaluation of destination attributes by 407 out-of-state visitors who traveled to Maine from 2020 to 2021. We synthesize this research to present a narrative on how perceptions of COVID-19 risk and public perceptions of rural tourism put certain communities at greater risk of illness throughout 2020. This research could inform future rural destination management and public health policies to help reduce negative socioeconomic, health and environmental impacts of pandemic-derived changes in travel and outdoor recreation behavior.

Code-Carrier coherence monitoring for dual frequency SBAS

User differential range error (UDRE) is used to bound satellite clock and orbit errors in satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS). The code carrier incoherence (CCI) originated from satellite payload faults may degrade generated satellite corrections and corresponding UDRE/DFRE bounding. To ease the burden on UDRE caused by the CCI induced ranging error, a code carrier coherence (CCC) monitor is implemented. With SBAS evolving towards L1-L5 dual-frequency multi-constellation direction, ionosphere-free smoothing is preferred for both ground and airborne data processing, saving the great effort of bounding the ionosphere correction. Due to the more pronounced CCI fault in the L5 signal compared to the L1 signal, its impact on user positioning is magnified. It has been analyzed that the presence of satellite clock failure CCI fault does not undermine the accuracy of the generated satellite corrections. However, to enhance the system availability, the satellite clock failure should be considered and a dual-frequency CCC monitor is required to monitor the measurements from both frequencies, while excluding the effects of ionosphere delay. One solution is to add another L1-like monitor for monitoring the additional L5 signal. Since only ionosphere-free errors need to be bounded in the dual-frequency system, an ionosphere-free monitor is another choice. Furthermore, a chi-squared monitor is proposed combining of three ionosphere-free statistics to monitor both frequencies simultaneously. These options are compared on the protected fault space and the performance on the probability of missed detection. It is concluded that the chi-squared monitor is an optimal choice, which protects user against an arbitrary CCI fault space excluding the ones with the form of ionosphere anomalies, and at the same time, achieves lower probability of missed detection than other monitors with the same fault magnitude.

Evolution of the Polygon of the Protected Natural Area “Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano” Due to the Expansion of the Port of Veracruz, Mexico

The Port of Veracruz, Mexico was artificially built at the beginning of the 21st century, dredging the sea floor and removing reefs to allow the entry of large ships, which led to a growth in the traffic of goods and people through it, making it the largest commercial port in all of Mexico. In 1992 the Government of Mexico decreed the area of coastal reefs near the Port of Veracruz as a protected natural area with the name of the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano (PSNSAV). In 2013, with the demand of international trade, the decision was made to expand the port, generating job growth in the area and an increase in the flow of containers and automobiles, also have a greater capacity to transport cereals, minerals and fuels. In contrast to the disagreements of the society due to the loss of protected space, the Parks polygon had to be modified. This work try to demonstrated that the construction of the port expansion began previous the presentation to the environmental authorities of the Environmental Impact Statement and the change in the protected limits with the disappearance of the Punta Gorda reefs and the dredging of Vergara Bay for the arrival of deep draft vessels. Through a systematic mapping of the scientific literature combined with satellite mapping and visual interpretation of images, and documentary analysis, we determined the damage to the reef system, which has protected species according to Mexican national regulations.

Transforming the food system in ‘unprotected space’: the case of diverse grain networks in England

Transitioning to food systems that are equitable, resilient, healthy and environmentally sustainable will require the cultivation and diffusion of transformational sociotechnical innovations—and grassroots movements are an essential source of such innovations. Within the literature on strategic niche management, government-provided ‘protected spaces’ where niche innovations can develop without facing the pressures of the market is an essential part of sustainability transitions. However, because of their desire to transform rather than transition food systems, grassroots movements often struggle to acquire such protected spaces and so must determine how and where to generate change whilst being marginalised and exposed to unprotected spaces. The aim of this research is to gain a precise view of the multiple touchpoints of marginalisation that exist across the grassroots-government interface and to apply a new framework for conceptual analysis of these touchpoints that can help to identify where and how grassroots movements might be able to push against this marginalisation. The study finds that, by applying a ‘who, what, where’ framework of analysis to policies across this interface, it is possible to find pathways forward for achieving small wins towards food systems transformation.

Fandom and the ethics of world-making: Building spaces for belonging on BobaBoard

BobaBoard is an in-development social media platform for media fans who are striving to create a space of belonging and acceptance for what its founder describes as a "niche group of weirdos." This emerging community is creating a protected space where media fans can explore and share their sexualities through both an anonymity-first design and a core ethos of anticensorship. However, these goals are not simple or easy to implement, and there are both affordances and limitations to BobaBoard's approach. Through digital ethnographic fieldwork, including participant observation and interviews, I found that the strategies and innovations through which tensions surrounding anonymity and (anti)censorship are negotiated illustrate emerging community ethics around the cocreation of fan spaces and the exploration of sexual fantasy in these spaces. These community ethics, or the ethics of world-making, demonstrate the possibilities of collaboratively creating protected spaces for sharing desire and sexuality.
