STUDY ON THE HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WHOLE SECTION TYPE FISHWAY BY USING THE PARTICLE TRACKING VELOCIMETRY

In this paper, basic hydraulic characteristics of the whole section fishway composed of some concrete blocks with artificial ruggedness on its surface have been investigated experimentally. Because of the complexity of the flow characteristics over uneven fishway, it is very difficult to use the common velocity measuring instruments such as a pitot tube or a propeller. In this study, we adopted the Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) method to obtain the instantaneous velocity components at many points. It is quite difficult to identify the polystyrene beads used as tracking particles because the image taken by high speed camera had a noticeable contrast between light and shade parts. The technique of the best image processing method is proposed to improve the contrast of the image. In conclusion, the proposed image processing method is applicable for such experiment, and the basic hydraulic characteristics of several types of the whole section fishway are clarified.

Automation of Arc Welding for Large-Scale Structures by Visual Sensor. Reliable Detection of Weld Lines.

In the automation of arc welding using visual sensors, it is necessary to precisely detect the weld line. However, for large scale structures, such as the steel tube transmission towers examined in the present study, it is not easy to maintain the reliability of weld line detection. Therefore, assuming that welding data among structural parts, including positions and directions of their contact points and lines, can be easily obtained from CAD data, and utilizing the fact that the current torch position is known all the time, we have proposed image processing algorithms to reliably detect only the welding area with a specified direction, and to precisely detect the welding line for torch position control. The proposed algorithms have been applied to a test piece placed on an experimental system, and continuous tracking along the welding line by measuring the welding gap has been presented.

Image processing algorithm for edge‐line extraction of lymph vessel wall and measurement of the vessel diameter

AbstractThe mechanism of the lymph flow is not fully understood. Since the lymphatic system has no pump apparatus such as a heart in the blood vessel system, it is important to study the relationship between the lymph flow and the contractile movement of its wall. This paper analyzes the rhythmical contraction of the lymphatics of the rat mesentery in vivo. Only the image of the lymph vessel wall was extracted from the microscopic image of the mesentery recorded on video tape. An algorithm was developed which was suited to the continuous measurement of the vessel diameter. In the process of the automatic extraction of the lymph vessel wall, not only its derivative and the direction, but also the running state of the lymph vessel were utilized as information. A circular scanning was employed for the first time as a method which realized an accurate diameter measurement of the vessel that always changed its shape with time. By the proposed image processing system, the periodic movement of the lymph vessel could be analyzed quantitatively.

Image data compression based on interpolative dpcm by area decomposition

AbstractThis paper proposes a useful method of image data compression which is a two‐dimensional interpolative DPCM, where the mean gray‐scale values of the neighborhood are used as the prediction for the pixel. In the proposed image processing system, the two‐dimensional image is partitioned into subareas in encoding, and the highly correlated subareas in the region are data‐compressed by the interpolative DPCM. A highspeed decoding is realized by calculating the low‐dimensional system of equations by parallel relaxation for the partitioned subareas. The decoding can be executed with the scale of iterative computations required for the analysis of the subarea with the largest dimensions. The architecture of the decoder is suited to the LSI realization, since it can be realized by the bit‐serial adder cell array without using the multiplier‐divider. The encoder has many points in common to the decoder and can be constructed using the same chip. This paper also presents a theoretical evaluation for the compression ratio by encoding and the encoding‐decoding speed in the proposed two‐dimensional interpolative DPCM. A further discussion is made for the three‐dimensional interpolative DPCM for the motion picture. It is shown theoretically that the compression ratio can be made larger utilizing the region‐partitioning of the three‐dimensional space than in the two‐dimensional case with the high‐speed encoding and decoding scheme.

A New Approach for an Efficient DTW in Face Detection through Eyes Localization

This paper presents an innovative method of face detection by supplementing dynamic time warping algorithm with proposed image processing strategy and weighting scheme. Using our proposed approach overcomes some of the shortcomings in applying dynamic time warping for face detection, hence improving the performance and detection accuracy. The results presented and discussed in this paper show the efficacy of our approach in using DTW for face detection.
