Investigating the effects of depressant additives on the low temperature properties of petroleum products

The article is devoted to the study of the low temperature properties of petroleum products and the influence of depressant additives on former. The objects of the study are the summer mark diesel fuel produced by «ПетроКоммерцОйлКазахстан» and depressant additives of «AGA», «MANNOL», «FENOM», «CYCLO C-24» brands. Such physical and chemical characteristics of petroleum products as flashpoint, pour point, cloud point, cold filter plugging point and kinematic viscosity of pure diesel fuel at the presence and absence of depressor additives of brands listed above. The best performance among studied additives is shown by «MANNOL» brand additive.

RISK ANALYSIS IN HANDLING AND STORAGE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

Increase in productivity and technological system i nnovation have resulted a boost in the specific act ivity of use and handling petroleum Products the chemical and physical properties of petroleum products represent an advantage when they are used for its o wn uses, but may result in accidental scenarios whi ch can cause serious damage to people and to environme nt. The quantitative risk analysis applied to gasol ine storage plant is a tool to quantify the damage and to planning safety of exposed workers and people in surrounding area. Therefore this represents an effe ctive means for emergency planning. Defined the vulnerability of the potential damage area through the characterization of known exposure levels, is possible to assess the individual risk indicators w hich depends on these exposure levels and the hazar d scenarios evolution. The evaluations are used to ve rify that, for the emergency management purposes and safety design, it is partial to consider only the a ccidental events with high probability of occurrenc e but is exhaustive to use a quantitative probabilistic risk indicator (Expected Value of Damage). Through simulation of generated danger flow, consistent wit h the operating conditions of the plant, the compli ance conditions in the early step of emergency management and the practical procedures for the implementation of the identified hazard scenarios h ave been laid down. These assessments check, as strategic goals, that the collection areas are not affected by the danger flow.

Ultrasound-induced change in chemical properties of petroleum products

Approaches to chemical modification of petroleum products are examined, and a method of lowering sulfur content using high-intensity ultrasonic vibrations is proposed. Experiments with the use of specially constructed devices for ultrasonic treatment of petroleum products have indicated the principal feasibility of lowering sulfur content in crude. It is established that the best means of removing sulfur from petroleum products is stepwise periodic treatment in an ultrasound field with subsequent removal of the cleaned portion of the crude.

The Phazaphot instrument for determination of the low-temperature properties of petroleum products

A new method of determining the solid point and flow point of crude oil and petroleum products, crystallization/melting of waxes in petroleum products, and the Phazaphot instrument for implementing the method are described. The method consists of recording the intensity of light mirror-reflected from the surface of the sample during structural transitions when the temperature changes. The new principle of measurements allowed significantly simplifying implementation of the method, making the determinations faster, and expanding the range of objects investigated and problems solved.

Vapor Pressures and Saturated Liquid Densities of Catalytic Cracking Petroleum Products

Vapor pressures and saturated liquid densities for four low-boiling fractions from a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process have been measured in a range of temperatures from the normal boiling point up to 593 K using an apparatus with a constant-volume PVT cell. The new experimental data add to the existing information on thermophysical properties of petroleum products at saturation conditions. Equations for the prediction of vapor pressures at saturation and liquid saturated densities both for straight-run and deep-refining petroleum products are reported.

Quality of petroleum products and methods for evaluating product quality (a discussion)

This article proposes a scheme, based on physiochemical, service-related, and technical properties, that can be used to classify practically all properties of petroleum products intended for any end use. Explains that physiochemical properties include density, viscosity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, surface tension, electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, elemental composition, distillation curve, and hydrocarbon group composition. Service-related properties include all properties of the product that ensure reliability and economy in the operation of engines, vehicles, and mechanisms. The technical properties of petroleum products are manifested in storage and transportation. Concludes that the proposed classification of petroleum product properties and quality evaluation methods will contribute to the future introduction of a combined system of petroleum product quality control.

Generalization of data on the thermophysical properties of petroleum products. Viscosity

We describe the investigation and generalization of data on the viscosity of fractions of Romashkin petroleum. We develop a method for calculating the viscosity of petroleum products in the liquid phase.

Evaluation of low-temperature properties of petroleum products by a potential method

Proposes a method for determining the solid points of petroleum products. Points out that presently available methods for calculating the cloud and solid points of petroleum products by visual observation of loss of mobility (e.g. GOST method) are poor in reproducibility and sensitivity. Explains that the proposed method is based on the indication of crystal formation processes by the potential generated at the interface between solid and liquid phases as the product is cooled, at the moment of structure formation and growth of the solid phase. Notes that the potential thus generated is related to changes in the state of aggregation of organic and other substances in their directed crystallization and is accompanied by separation of charge. Suggests that the moment of potential appearance can be used to find the temperature interval for first clouding of the product, thus enabling solidification and clouding to be detected in the earlier stages of the cooling process. Indicates that the time required for determination of the solid point using the proposed method is 10 min., compared to 1-1.5 hr. using the GOST 20287-74 method.

Certain results in the use of AKOR-1 additive

1. The material presented in this article supports fully the previous conclusion that AKOR-1 additive improves substantially the protective properties of petroleum products. 2. Studies by a number of organizations have confirmed the feasibility of using commercial oils and fuels with AKOR-1 additive as operational/preservative materials. 3. The AKOR-1 not only improves protective properties, but also can improve anticorrosion, antiwear, and detergency properties of motor oils, and also can prevent the accumulation of static charges in petroleum products.
