Identification of Phenolic Compounds Extracted from OMW Using LC-MS.

The extraction of olive oil produces annually huge quantities of Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) that are considered as a source of pollution due to their high concentration in organic matter. This study aims to valorize Olive mill wastewater and investigates the effect of the extraction method and solvents on the contents and profiling of phenolic compounds and their antioxidant potential. It was revealed that the liquid-liquid method using ethyl acetate is the most effective followed by the maceration using chloroform/methanol (1:1), their polyphenol contents are respectively at 1.17 g GAE/L of OMW and 1.07 g GAE/L of OMW. In addition, the antioxidant activity was studied using ABTS test. It has shown that the methanolic extract has the best antioxidant activity at 15.75 mg/L. Moreover, we noticed a negative correlation between the phenolic compounds' concentration and their antioxidant activity which indicates that the phenolic profile may not be the same in the different extracts that's why a primary identification of the phenolic profile using UHPLC-MS was monitored and the results showed different chromatographic profiles between the samples.

The genus Isatis, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The Isatis species has antibacterial, anticancer and antiviral properties. Flavonoids and phenolics are very widespread bioactive secondary plant metabolites in herbal medicine. The present review summarizes the flavonoid and phenolic compounds derivatives from the genus Isatis and aiming to highlight the recent advances in current knowledge on Isatis species as a source of bioactive flavonoid and phenolic compounds.

LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS profiling of phenolic compounds in Australian native plums and their potential antioxidant activities

Australian native plums are rich in phenolic compounds, which have significant health-promoting effects. There are limited recordings and information on the number of species and phenolic content of Australian native plums. However, the number of species and phenolic content of Australian native plums are not well documented. This research was conducted to identify and quantify phenolic compounds in the peel, pulp, and seed of three common Australian native plums (Kakadu plum, Davidson plum, Illawarra plum) for applying and promoting the commercial worth of these fruits. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and total tannins content (TTC) were used to determine the amount of phenolic compounds in these Australian native plums and in vitro experiments, including total antioxidant capacity (TAC), 2, 2′-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), and 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) were used to analyze the antioxidant activities of the samples. Phenolic compounds in the samples were thoroughly analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS), and preliminarily identified as phenolic acids (10), flavonoids (23), and other phenolic substances (11). These results show the potent antioxidant properties of the Australian native plums and provide evidence for their potential use as culinary, medicinal, and nutraceutical components.

Evaluation of the Prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in Chicken Fillets and Its Bio-Control Using Different Seaweed Extracts.

This study aims to assess the occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus in chicken fillets and to control its growth using various lyophilized seaweed extracts (i.e., Halimeda opuntia (HO), Actinotrichia fragilis, and Turbinaria turbinata) by an agar disk diffusion assay in vitro. Results showed that prevalence of S. aureus in breast and thigh samples reached of 92% and 84%, respectively. Lyophilized HO extract was the only seaweed that showed the antibacterial activity against S aureus with a significant difference at p < 0.05. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of HO extract was 1.5%, with an inhibition zone of 8.16 ± 0.73 mm. Regarding 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, IC50 was recorded at 55.36 μg/mL, whereas cytotoxic IC50 of the lyophilized HO extract on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was 33.7 µg/mL; a higher IC50 of HO extracts permits their use as a safe food additive in meat products. Moreover, total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids compounds recorded 20.36 ± 0.092 and 16.59 ± 0.029 mg/mL, respectively. HPLC analyses of phenolic compounds profiles exhibited many bioactive substances and the higher ratio was daidzein with 10.84 ± 0.005 µg/mL and followed by gallic acid with a value of 4.06 ± 0.006 µg/mL. In a challenge study, chicken fillet (CHF) experimentally inoculated with S. aureus (ST) and treated with the lyophilized HO algal extract at 4% and 6% (CHF/ST/HO) showed a complete reduction of S. aureus count on the 6th and 4th days in chicken fillet stored at 4 °C, respectively. Moreover, CHF/ST/HO at 4% and 6% of HO extract enhanced the sensory attributes of grilled un-inoculated chicken fillet. Thus, lyophilized HO extracts are promising antibacterial and antioxidant candidates in the chicken meat industry.

UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS Profiling of Phenolic Compounds from Eriocephalus africanus: In Vitro Antioxidant, Antidiabetic, and Anti-Inflammatory Potentials.

The present study investigated phenolic compounds, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and the anti-inflammatory potentials of methanolic and chloroform extracts of Eriocephalus africanus. The methanolic extract included, polyphenols (112 ± 2.81 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g), flavonols (76.12 ± 7.95 mg quercetin equivalents (QE)/g); antioxidant capacity (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) (752.64 ± 89.0 μmol of ascorbic acid equivalents (AAE) per g dry weight (µmol AAE/g), 2,2-dyphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (812.18 ± 51.12 Trolox equivalents per gram of dry mass of plant extracts (μmol TE/g), TEAC (631.63 ± 17.42 µmol TE/g)), while the chloroform extract included polyphenols (39.93 ± 1.36 mg GAE/g), flavonols (44.81 ± 3.74 mg QE/g); antioxidant capacity, DPPH (58.70 ± 5.18 µmol TE/g), TEAC (118.63 ± 3.74 µmol TE/g) and FRAP (107.10 ± 2.41 µmol AAE/g). The phytochemicals profiling performed by UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS revealed some important polyphenols, predominantly flavonoids, that could be responsible for the antioxidant capacity and biological effects. Both extracts demonstrated a dose-dependent manner of the alpha-glucosidase inhibition with an IC50 between 125 and 250 μg/mL for methanolic extract, while the chloroform extract was at 250 μg/mL. In the L6 myoblasts and C3A hepatocytes, the methanolic extract slightly increased the utilization of glucose, and both extracts exhibited a dose-dependent increase in the glucose uptake in both cell types without significantly increasing the cytotoxicity. Furthermore, both extracts exhibited an anti-inflammatory potential and the findings from the present study could serve as a baseline for further research in the development of pharmaceutical agents.

Diverse polyphenol components contribute to antioxidant activity and hypoglycemic potential of mulberry varieties

Profiles of phenolic compounds, antioxidant activities, α-glucosidase inhibitory and anti-glycation activities of nine mulberry varieties were investigated. Twenty-three phenolic components were identified in the mulberry fruit. Chlorogenic was the predominant phenolic acid, while rutin was the most abundant flavonoid. In the colored mulberry fruits, the major anthocyanins were cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside. Furthermore, we provide the first report of taxifolin-O-glucoside and two p-coumaroyl-caffeoylquinic acid isomers from mulberry fruit. The total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 4.12 to 35.50 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g, while the total flavonoid content (TFC) varied between 1.16 and 39.95 mg rutin equivalents (RE)/g. The total anthocyanin content (TAC) ranged from 7.44 to 25.84 mg/g. The Zisang NO 1 variety presented the highest TPC, TFC and TAC with values of 35.50 mg GAE/g, 39.35 mg RE/g and 25.84 mg/g, respectively. Accordingly, it was characterized by the highest antioxidant capacity with values of 238.3 μmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/g and 560.1 μmol TE/g for DPPH and FRAP assays, respectively. Additionally, Zisang NO 1 showed better α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and anti-glycosylation activity, which may be due to its diverse polyphenolic composition. The antioxidant activity and the hypoglycemic potential were significantly higher in the colored mulberry fruits compared to the white mulberry varieties.

Conversion of hydroxycinnamic acids by Furfurilactobacillus milii in sorghum fermentations: Impact on profile of phenolic compounds in sorghum and on ecological fitness of Ff. milii.

The conversion of phenolic compounds by lactobacilli in food fermentations contributes to food quality. The metabolism of phenolics by lactobacilli has been elucidated in the past years but information on the contribution of specific enzymes in food fermentations remains scarce. This study aimed to address this gap by disruption of genes coding for the hydroxycimmanic acid reductase Par1, the hydroxycinnamic acid decarboxylase Pad, the hydrocinnamic esterase EstR, and strains with disruption of all three genes in Furfurilactobacillus milii FUA3583. The conversion of phenolics by Ff. milii and its isogenic mutants in sorghum fermentations was studied by LC-UV and LC-UV-MS/MS analyses. Ff. milii FUA3583 converted hydroxycinnamic acids predominantly with Par1. Vinylphenols were detected only in mutants lacking par1. A phenotype for the estR defective mutant was not identified. The formation of pyrano-3-deoxyanthocyanidins was observed only after fermentation with strains expressing Pad. Specifically, formation of these compounds was low with Ff. milii FUA3583, substantially increased in the Par1 mutant and abolished in all mutants with disrupted pad. Competition experiments with Ff. milii FUA3583 and its isogenic mutants demonstrated that expression of one of the two metabolic pathways for hydroxycinnamic acids increases the ecological fitness of the strain. Disruption of EstR in a Δpar1Δpar2Δpad background improved ecological fitness, indirectly demonstrating a phenotype of the esterase in Ff. milii. The documentation of the functionality of genes coding for conversion of hydroxycinnamic acids may support the selection of starter cultures for improved quality of fermented cereal products.

Caesalpinia palmeri: First Report on the Phenolic Compounds Profile, Antioxidant and Cytotoxicity Effect.

This study aimed to determine the phenolic compounds profile, antioxidant potential and cytotoxicity of extracts and fractions of Caesalpinia palmeri. Methanolic extracts were generated from C. palmeri berries, stems and flowers. The latter was subjected to liquid-liquid partition, obtaining hexane, ethyl acetate and residues fractions. Results showed that the flower extract and ethyl acetate fraction had a larger concentration of phenolic compounds (148.9 and 307.9 mg GAE/g, respectively), being ellagic acid (6233.57 and 19550.08 μg/g, respectively), quercetin-3-β-glycoside (3023.85 and 8952.55 μg/g, respectively) and gallic acid (2212.98 and 8422.34 μg/g, respectively) the most abundant compounds. Flower extract and ethyl acetate fraction also presented the highest antioxidant capacity on all tested methods (DPPH, ABTS, ORAC and FRAP) and low cytotoxicity against ARPE-19 cells (IC50 >170 μg/mL). C. palmeri possessed high antioxidant potential, associated with the presence of phenolic compounds and low cytotoxicity, suggesting that they could represent an option to counter oxidative stress.

Water-soluble phenolic compounds and their putative antioxidant activities in the seed coats from different lentil (Lens culinaris) genotypes

The seed coat is a major byproduct of lentil processing with potential as a sustainable source of antioxidant polyphenols. Profiles of water-soluble phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of seven genotypes of lentil which includes both normal-tannin and low-tannin seed coats were investigated. Antioxidant activities were assessed using four antioxidant assays, and phenolic compounds were quantified using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Total phenolic content (TPC) varied significantly among genotypes and ranged between 1519 ± 140 and 6502 ± 154 μg/g. Thirty phenolic compounds were identified with kaempferol tetraglycoside, catechin-3-glucoside and procyanidins being the dominant compounds in normal-tannin seed coats. Kaempferol tetraglycoside predominated (80–90%) in low-tannin seed coats. Antioxidant activities strongly correlated with TPC (r > 0.93) with a 6–9 times higher activity in normal-tannin than that of low-tannin lentils. Without flavan-3-ols and procyanidins, low-tannin seed coat may not exert strong antioxidant potential, whereas normal-tannin seed coat contains water-extractable natural phenolic compounds with promising antioxidant potential.

Investigation the influence of biologically active compounds on the antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of red raspberry (Rubus idaeous l.) leaf extract

Abstract The aim of the study. To determine phenolic and organic acids compound profiles, and the antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of raspberry leaf extract. Materials and methods. The object of the study was red raspberry leaf extract. The quantity of phenolic compounds was determined by applying a spectrophotometric method of analysis, whereas organic acids content was assessed by means of the alkalimetric method, while the antioxidant activity of the obtained extract was evaluated by employing the potentiometric method, and antibacterial and antifungal activity was ascertained through the wells method, and anti-inflammatory activity was found via carrageenan – induced paw edema assay. Results. The content of phenolic compounds was 18.45±0.37 mg/ml, catechins was 10.12±0.20 mg/ml, flavonoids was 3.32±0.07 mg/ml, hydroxycinnamic acids derivatives was 2.39±0.05 mg/ml and organic acids was 7.25±0.15 mg/ml. Moreover, the antioxidant activity was 76.11±1.48 mmol-equiv./mres dry, which was higher by 32.80% than the reference drug „Ascorutin”. Staphylococcus aureus bacteria was the most sensitive to the extract (25.00±0.00 mm), whereas Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most resistant (21.67 ±0.66 mm). Treatment with red raspberry leaf extract at 1 ml/kg showed a significant edema reduction at 1, 2 and 3 h at 38.8, 41.8 and 48.8%, compared with the saline group. Conclusian. The present study indicated that red raspberry leaf extract possesses antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. Thus, red raspberry leaves are a promising source of bioactive substances that can be used for further developing medicines in the treatment and prevention of lifestyle diseases.

UHPLC-DAD-ESI-HRMS/MS profile of phenolic compounds in northern red oak (Quercus rubra L., syn. Q. borealis F. Michx) seeds and its transformation during thermal processing

This paper describes for the first time a complete characterization and quantification of the phenolic compounds in raw and heat-treated northern red oak ( Quercus rubra L.) seeds using UHPLC-DAD-ESI-HRMS/MS. A total 42 phenolic compounds belonging to five different groups of compounds, including ellagitannins, gallotannins, phenolic glycosides, hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives (HBA derivatives) and ellagic acid derivatives (EA derivatives), were identified, and most of them were reported in Q. rubra seeds for the first time. Significant variability of phenolic composition existed among raw and roasted samples under different temperature and time conditions. The total content of the phenolics, ellagitannins, gallotannins and phenolic glycosides was drastically reduced by roasting, regardless of the thermal processing conditions. In turn, an increase the roasting temperature from 135° to 200°C led to an increment in the total content of HBA and EA derivatives. Among the roasted seeds, the highest total phenolics content was found in the samples thermally treated at 185 °C for 25 min, while the lowest amounts were observed in those roasted at 135 °C for 80 min. Ellagitannins were the dominant class of phenolic compounds in the raw samples, while EA derivatives were more abundant in heat-treated seeds. Interestingly, the second most abundant phenolic group in both unroasted and roasted samples were phenolic glycosides. The predominant individual phenolic compounds, in raw seeds, were cretanin, oenothein B and rugosin E isomers. Since, among the phenolics found in the raw seeds, cretanin had the highest thermal stability, while dimeric ellagitannins and high molecular weight gallotannins exhibited the least thermal stability. The roasted samples contained mainly compounds formed by further decomposition of abovementioned compounds. • A total of 42 phenolics were found in Quercus rubra L. seeds for the first time. • In raw oak seeds, the dominant phenolics were cretanin and dimeric ellagitannins. • Ellagitannins and gallotannins showed higher heat sensitivity than other phenolics. • Roasting effectively increased the content of low-molecular-weight phenolics. • The raw and roasted Q. rubra seeds are a valuable source of bioactive phenolics.

Metabolomic Profiling and Assessment of Phenolic Compounds Derived from Vitis davidii Foex Cane and Stem Extracts

Phenolic extracts from berry seeds have been extensively studied for their health benefits. However, few studies have been conducted on the effects of phenolic extracts from Vitis L. canes and berry stems. The Chinese spine grape (V. davidii Foex) is an important and widely distributed wild species of Vitis L. The present study explored the metabolomic profile and evaluated the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds in extracts from V. davidii Foex. canes and stems, with a focus on their role in preventing DNA damage caused by free radicals and inhibiting the growth of breast (MCF-7) and cervical (HeLa) cancer cells. Total phenolic compounds in the dried berry stems of spine grapes were higher than that in vine canes. Analysis of the extracts showed that proanthocyanins, epicatechin, catechin, and phenolic acid were the main phenolic compounds in V. davidii Foex, but in higher quantities in berry stems than in vine canes. However, trans-resveratrol and kaempferol 3-O-glucoside were present in the vine canes but not in the berry stems. Antioxidant analysis by FRAP and ABTS showed that extracts from berry stems and vine canes had a higher antioxidant activity than thinned young fruit shoots before flowering, leaves, peel, pulp, and seeds in V. davidii Foex. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of extracts from berry stems was higher than that in other grape species, except for muscadine. In vitro analyses further showed that the extracts significantly increased H2O2 scavenging ability and conferred a protective effect against DNA damage. Furthermore, a low concentration of phenolic compounds in extracts from the vine canes and berry stems of spine grapes inhibited the proliferation of the MCF-7 and Hela cancer cells. These research results provided some important useful information for the exploitation of V. davidii Foex canes and berry stems and indicated that canes and stems of V. davidii Foex had good antioxidant properties, anticancer activity and prevented DNA damage, providing evidence for medical utilization of V. davidii Foex.

In-depth evaluation of nutritive, chemical constituents and anti-glycemic properties of jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam) clonal accessions with flake colour diversity from Eastern Sub-Himalayan plains of India

The study was designed to elucidate the potential of jackfruit clonal accessions having diverse flake colours from nutritional and medicinal perspectives. Jack fruit accessions with deep yellow flakes were found to contain the highest flavonoids, antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid, and α-glucosidase inhibition whereas, orange-red flakes exhibited the highest β-carotene, phenol, minerals (iron and zinc) and better inhibition of α-amylase and β-glucosidase enzymes. Phenolic compounds profiling revealed the presence of higher sinapic acid, ferulic acid and quercetin contents in the orange-red-coloured flakes. Metabolite analysis revealed presence of anti-diabetic compounds (n-Hexadecanoic acid, tridecane, 2-Heptadecenal etc.) in deep yellow and orange-red coloured jack flakes with lower glycemic load. Considering the abundant health benefits as evident from the present study, orange-red and deep yellow-coloured flakes may be recommended for consumption to manage the hyperglycemic condition.

Bioactive coatings from non-conventional loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) seed starch to extend strawberries shelf-life: An antioxidant packaging

Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) fruits are very perishable and display a natural quick deterioration even in excellent conditions. Starch based edible films and coatings may be introduced as an innovative way to preserve and pack such food products for extended shelf-life. These are composed of biopolymers such as underutilized by-products from food industry and polyols, forming a biodegradable, edible composite which contain bioactive components in their composition. Thus, the present study was conducted with an aim to characterize loquat seed starch based bioactive films and apply them to strawberry fruits to study the protective effect of bioactive films and coatings during storage. The glycerol loquat film (GLF) and sorbitol loquat film (SLF) had their thickness, opacity solubility, water vapor permeability (WVP), morphological properties and antioxidant activity profile assessed, while the coated strawberries were characterized in terms of visual aspect, firmness, weight loss, pH, Total Soluble Solids and Total Titratable Acidity during 16 days. Results showed that the edible coating designed with sorbitol provided a better physicochemical property, solubility and WVP behavior when compared to the GLF sample. On the other hand, the GLF were capable to maintain the antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds profiles from AS. The application of the AS coatings enhanced the storage period of the strawberry in 6 days maintaining their characteristics through the prevention of weight loss, delaying the microbial growth, pigment oxidation, prolonging the period of visual and sensorial acceptance of the fruit.

In vitro Evaluation of Anti-Inflammatory Activity of "Habanero" Chili Pepper (Capsicum chinense) Seeds Extracts Pretreated with Cellulase.

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of capsaicin and particular phenolic compounds profile from cellulase assisted extracts of Habanero (Capsicum chinense) chili pepper seeds (CPS) on the concentration of cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β) in murine macrophages (RAW 264.7) stimulated with lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Capsaicin was quantified by HPLC-DAD, and the phenolic profile was determined by UPLC-MS-QqQ. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by Mouse Cytokine/Chemokine Magnetic Bead Panel 96-well plate assay. Among the 15 different phenolics found in CPS extracts obtained at 120 or 150min of maceration with 2,500 UI/L at 30ºC or 45 ºC in a 1:15 (w:v) proportion, the most abundant was vanillic acid (7.97-12.66µg/g). The extract obtained at 30ºC and 120min, showed similar effects than the observed for synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs indomethacin and dexamethasone, and capsaicin standard. Beyond capsaicin, salicylic, protocatechuic and trans-cinnamic acids as well as vanillin in CPS extracts were correlated with the anti-inflammatory effect. On the other hand, capsaicin and chlorogenic acid contents were potential immunostimulants whose concentration varied depending on the cellulase treatment time.

Metagenomics analysis of the polymeric and monomeric phenolic dynamic changes related to the indigenous bacteria of black tea spontaneous fermentation

Spontaneous fermentation during black tea production involves several reactions, including the oxidation of phenolic compounds. This process has usually been studied without considering the potential involvement of indigenous tea microorganisms. This work utilised a metagenomic technique targeting bacterial 16S rRNA genes and evaluated the profile of phenolic compounds generated during the production of black tea. The resulting data were used to develop correlational and predictive functional analyses related to bacterial dynamics and the syntheses of various phenolic compounds. In particular, the genera Methylobacterium and Devosia were correlated with gallic acid and quercetin. Concurrently, the genera Sphingomonas, Chryseobacterium and Aureimonas were correlated with kaempferol, theaflavins, thearubigins and theabrownins. These results, supported by predicted functional analysis based on 16S rRNA genes associated with phenolic compounds, indicated that yfiH (polyphenol oxidase) and katG (catalase-peroxidase) are likely the dominant genes of the bacterial community involved in the black tea production process. This research suggests that bacteria could potentially contribute to the production process of black tea.

Euphorbia granulata Forssk: Evaluation of antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis induction in breast cancer cells

Euphorbia is one of the six largest genera of flowering plants. The Euphorbia species are widely distributed throughout the world. So, the aim of this study was to investigate the phenolic compounds profile, antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis induction of Euphorbia. granulata extract (EGE) on breast cancer cells. In this experiment, we used HPLC analysis to attain the phenolic and flavonoid compound profile. The total phenolic and flavonoid content (TPC and TFC) were evaluated by classic procedures. Besides, the antioxidant activity of the extract was assessed. MTT assay was performed and caspase-3 activity was also measured to detect the effect of E. granulata on the MCF-7 cell line. Rutin with the amount of 6.40 µg/mg extract was identified as the main component in EGE. The extract was rich in TPC and showed high free radical scavenging activity (IC 50 = 22.96 ± 0.84 μg/mL). Based on MTT assay results, EGE exhibited anti-proliferative activity on MCF-7 cells with the IC 50 value of 25.17 ± 0.95 µg/mL. EGE also affected MCF-7 cells by reducing cell viability via the induction of apoptosis. So, the treatment of the cells by EGE exhibited an increase in caspase-3 activity. These findings indicated that EGE has a rich source of phenolic compounds and the extract can be a potent anticancer agent in inducing apoptosis in breast cancer cells and probably other cancer cells.

Changes in cytotoxic capacity, phenolic profile, total phenols and flavonoids of Nigella damascena L. seed extracts under different liquid fertilization

Nigella damascena L. is an annual herbaceous valuable medicinal and aromatic plant in the Ranunculaceae family. For the first time with this study, the effects of different fertilizer treatments on the total phenolic-flavonoid content and phenolic compound profile in N. damascena seeds were investigated. Also, cytotoxic activities of n-hexane and methanol extracts (0–300 μg/mL) from fertilized seeds against breast (MCF-7) and pancreatic (MIA PaCa-2) cancer and embryonic kidney (HEK 293) cell lines were determined. The highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the methanol extract of seeds were obtained from chemical-3 L/da (0.196 ± 0.03 mg GAE/g) and organic- 1200 mL/da (3.85 ± 0.04 mg QE/g) fertilizer treatments, respectively. Phenolic compounds identified qualitatively by HPLC-PDA in the seeds were epicatechin, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, rutin hydrate, apigenin and naringenin. Fertilized seed n-hexane extracts caused greater cell inhibition compared to control and showed remarkable selective cytotoxicity against the two cancer cell lines investigated in vitro. However, even at the highest concentration (300 μg/mL) of all seed methanol extracts, 50% cell inhibition did not occur in both cancer and healthy cell lines. Results show that N. damascena seed extracts can be studied further in terms of having an anticancer agent potential.

Comprehensive review of composition distribution and advances in profiling of phenolic compounds in oilseeds.

A wide range of phenolic compounds participate in oilseed growth, regulate oxidative stability of corresponding vegetable oil, and serve as important minor food components with health-promoting effects. Composition distribution of phenolic compounds varied in oilseeds. Isoflavones, sinapic acid derivatives, catechin and epicatechin, phenolic alcohols, chlorogenic acid, and lignans were the main phenolic compounds in soybean, rapeseed, peanut skin, olive, sunflower seed, sesame and flaxseed, respectively. Among which, the total isoflavones content in soybean seeds reached from 1,431 to 2,130 mg/100 g; the main phenolic compound in rapeseed was sinapine, representing 70-90%; chlorogenic acid as the predominant phenolic compound in sunflower kernels, represented around 77% of the total phenolic content. With the rapid development of analytical techniques, it is becoming possible for the comprehensive profiling of these phenolic compounds from oilseeds. This review aims to provide recently developments about the composition distribution of phenolic compounds in common oilseeds, advanced technologies for profiling of phenolic compounds by the metabolomics approaches based on mass spectrometry. As there is still limited research focused on the comprehensive extraction and determination of phenolics with different bound-forms, future efforts should take into account the non-targeted, pseudo-targeted, and spatial metabolomic profiling of phenolic compounds, and the construction of phenolic compound database for identifying and quantifying new types of phenolic compounds in oilseeds and their derived products.
