Aim: To study profile of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients attending a private hospital. Methods: Study period: January 2002 to December 2005. Case records of all RA patients (satisfying the 1988 Revised ARA criteria) were analyzed for: age at onset, sex, education, occupation, marital status, smoking, alcohol ingestion, diet, prior DMARDs treatment, steroids, alternative therapy, co-morbidities (hypertension, diabetes mellitus), FH/O RA, PH/O tuberculosis and jaundice; in females, age at menarche, relationship of pregnancy to RA onset and age at menopause. Results: Number 400. Males = 46 (11.5%) Females = 354 (88.5%) Age at onset (years) Education 16–20 = 18 (4.5%) X standard = 162 (42.8%) 51–60 = 52 (13%) Illiterate = 12 (3.17%) 61–70 = 24 (6%) NA = 22 71–80 = 7 (1.75%) Occupation (females): Working = 64 (16.2%) Housewives = 280 (70.7%) Students = 6 (1.5%) NA = 4 Married = 376 (94%) Single = 24 (6%) Smoker = 10 (3.9%) Alcohol = 10 (3.9%) Alternative therapy = 288 (72%) Steroids = 153 (38.25%) DMARDs = 189 (47.25%) FH/O RA = 42 (10.5%) Co-morbidities: HT = 91(22.7%) DM = 36 (9%) Tuberculosis = 46 (11.5%) Hepatitis = 51 (12.75%) Mean age at menarche = 13.4 years Relation to pregnancy = 13 (3.25%) Menopausal females = 137 (38.7%) Mean age at menopause (physiological +surgical) = 45.7 years Conclusion:The profile: Females with disease onset between 3rd and 5th decade, married, educated non-smokers. Majority receive alternative therapy and steroids. Hypertension, DM and TB important co-morbidities. Family history positive in > 10%; >45% menopausal (at first visit).
