Leaf Rust Infection Phakopsora pachyrhizi on Seven Soybean Varieties in Pine Agroforestry System

Abstract The agroforestry farming system is an alternative to increasing soybean production in Indonesia. However, in its cultivation, there are obstacles in the form of attacks by leaf rust pathogens. Leaf rust caused by the P. pachyrhizi fungus can reduce soybean production, depending on the variety and environmental conditions. This research was conducted from June to September 2023 on the KHDTK (Kawasan Hutan dengan Tujuan Khusus) Forestry Alas Bromo, Karanganyar, Central Java, Indonesia, to explore the leaf rust incidence in soybean varieties. This research used a completely randomized block design (CRBD) consisting of seven soybean variety treatments: Anjasmoro, Argomulyo, Dena-1, Dena-2, Denasa-1, Denasa-2, and Devon-1, and repeated three times. The variable observed was disease incidence. The results showed that all soybean varieties tested could be infected with the leaf rust pathogen. The lowest leaf rust infection was found in the Devon-1 variety (6.0%), and the highest infection occurred in the Dena-1 variety (20.0%). This is thought to be related to genetic traits and environmental conditions strongly influencing the growth and development of the P. pachyrhizi pathogen.

Disease Incidence of Bacterial Pustules (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines) on Some Soybean Varieties Planted in Mahogany Agroforestry System in Alas Bromo Forestry

Abstract Soybean production in Indonesia needs to supply for domestic needs sufficiently. One of the things that influence is the reduction of soybean harvest areas in Indonesia. One of the solutions to the problem is through extensification by utilizing land under shade, which is called an agroforestry system. Agroforestry systems will change intercrop environmental conditions such as reducing light intensity, temperature and increasing humidity. The condition will affect disease development in soybean plants, especially bacterial pustule disease caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. Glycines. X. axonopodis bacteria can reduce soybean productivity by up to 57.61% in susceptible hosts and favorable environmental conditions. In this research, observations were made regarding the symptoms and incidence of bacterial pustules infection on seven varieties under the shade of mahogany. The varieties used were Anjasmoro, Argomulyo, Dena-1, Dena-2, Denasa-1, Denasa-2, and Devon-1. The research was conducted for three months at KHDTK (Kawasan Hutan dengan Tujuan Khusus) Alas Bromo, Karanganyar, Central Java, Indonesia. The research showed that the lowest incidence of bacterial pustule occurred in the Anjasmoro varieties, with an incidence value of 0%. In comparison, the highest incidence of attacks occurred on the Denasa-1 variety, up to 23.3%.

Firefly Algorithm for SVM Multi-class Optimization on Soybean Land Suitability Analysis

Soybean is the primary source of vegetable protein nutrition, containing fat and vitamins that Indonesian people widely consume. The decline in soybean production in Indonesia every year is due to the reduced area of soybean cultivation, thereby increasing dependence on imports from other countries. Land suitability maps can provide directions for priority locations for soybean cultivation based on land characteristics and weather to produce optimal production. The SVM multi-class algorithm has been applied to classify land suitability data to create a land suitability map but has yet to obtain optimal accuracy, especially for sigmoid kernels. The objective of this study is to enhance the performance of the sigmoid kernel SVM by utilizing the firefly algorithm. The study focuses on evaluating the suitability of soybean cultivation in Bogor and Grobogan Regencies. The results of the tests indicate that the firefly algorithm-optimized SVM (FA-SVM) significantly improves accuracy compared to the SVM without optimization. The accuracy achieved by FA-SVM is 89.95%, while the SVM without optimization only achieves an accuracy of 65.99%. The best parameters produced by the firefly algorithm are C=2.33 and σ=0.45 obtained from firefly customization, and the number of generations is 10. Based on this, the optimization algorithm can be used to produce an optimal model. The best optimal model obtained can be used as a guide for priority locations/areas for soybean cultivation by farming communities, so as to produce maximum soybean productivity.

The potential and prospects for the implementation of precision farming for soybean production in Indonesia

Precision farming is a modern agricultural technology using various ITs. This technology is considered very potential to be applied for developing soybean production in Indonesia. This is because with the use of conventional technology it is difficult to achieve maximal productivity as expected, especially with the limited facilities and infrastructure. Based on research results, precision farming is able to increase productivity and farming efficiency, reduce negative impacts on the environment and increase farmer’s income so that it can support sustainable farming management. Precision farming is very prospective to be developed in Indonesia to increase soybean productivity and production to support the achievement of soybean self-sufficiency. Support for the implementation of precision farming has been provided by the government, the private sector, and also farmers. The success of implementation of precision farming is greatly influenced by the development of IT technology, especially those related to various aspects of soybean cultivation.

Analysis of Soybean Production Trends in Indonesia

Climate change since 2012 has had a real influence on the uncertainty of soybean production which has resulted in fluctuating soybean production in Indonesia. The study purposed to: (i) analyze the fluctuation of soybean production before and during climate change, (ii) analyzing the factors that affect soybean production fluctuations covering land area (X1), soybean prices (X2), consumption (X3). The type of data used is secondary data, a time series data of soybean production in 1994 to 2019. The data was obtained from the Central Statistics Agency. The analytical method used is trend analysis to analyze production fluctuations. Multiple linear regression analysis to analyze the factors that influence production fluctuations. The results showed that before climate change production trends decrease, during climate change production trends increase slightly. Factors that influence soybean production are land area (positive influence on fluctuations in soybean production by α 5 % means an increase in land area results in an increase in production), price has positive effect on soybean production fluctuations with α 5 % means an increase in price motivates farmers to produce, and consumption has positive effect on soybean production fluctuations with α 5 % means an increase in consumption motivates farmers to produce.

Enhancing sustainable soybean production in Indonesia: evaluating the environmental and economic benefits of MIGO technology for integrated supply chain sustainability

Adopting MIGO Bio P 2000 Z in soybean cultivation in Indonesia has yielded significant advancements in sustainable agriculture. Adopting MIGO Bio P 2000 Z in Indonesian soybean cultivation offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to bolstering economic growth, food security, and the agricultural sector. In addressing challenges and enhancing the benefits, investing in training, market diversification, and regulations is vital while supporting farmers, especially small-scale ones. This holistic approach will secure Indonesia's soybean supply chain and strengthen the nation's agricultural resilience.

Growth Analysis of Three Soybean Varieties on Ultisol

Expansion of planting areas by utilizing sub-optimal land and the use of superior varieties is one of the alternatives in increasing soybean production in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the growth of three soybean varieties on Ultisol land in the Experimental Garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University. This activity was conducted from September to November of 2022. The soybean varieties used in this study were Dena 1, Devon 1, and Demas 1. This research was designed using a Randomized Group Design with 1 factor, namely the type of variety with 3 groups of replications. The observation results of each treatment were analyzed statistically. If F count is greater than F table, then continued with Tukey's Further Test at the 5% level. It was concluded that some of the observed characters of the three soybean varieties showed that there were significant differences in growth in the observation of plant height and leaf area index. While in the observation of plant growth rate and the ratio of crown: root there was no significant difference between the tested varieties.

The Potential and Prospect of Tidal Swamp Lands for Sustainable Soybean Production

The demand for food, particularly as a source of protein for the majority of Indonesia’s population, has not yet been satisfied by the country’s soybean production. For these reasons, the government works nonstop to intensify and extend soybean production in order to enhance productivity. Indonesia has a sizable amount of tidal marsh area (more than 700 000 ha) that is spread out throughout a number of islands, including Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Papua. The physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, such as water saturation in the root zones, a low pH, and a high Al concentration for soybean growth, are the main limitations of this land. However, the area may produce high soybean productivity (2.0 - 2.5 t/ha) with excellent management techniques. It is already possible to grow soybeans on tidal marsh lands using land and plant management techniques like fertilization, water management, amelioration, and tolerance varieties. In order to ensure sustained national soybean production in Indonesia and achieve self-sufficiency, tidal swamp areas have tremendous potential and chances for development.

Morphophysiological and yield traits of soybean varieties tolerant of intercropping with maize

Biodiversitas 24: 3872-3880. Not all soybean varieties grow optimally when intercropped with maize. Previously, we identified seven varieties (i.e., "Demas 1", Dena 1", "Dena 2", "Derap 1", "Devon 1", "Devon 2", and "Wilis") and two (i.e., "Dega 1" and "Mahameru") as tolerant and intolerant of intercropping based on selection indices and yield. This research aims to determine the morphophysiological and yield traits of tolerant and intolerant soybean groups intercropped with maize. The study used a randomized complete block design with three blocks as replications, and conducted from October 2019 to February 2020. Results showed that light intensity in the intercropping system had decreased by 19.91% relative to that in the monoculture system at 7 weeks after planting. The tolerant group displayed significant gains in seed weight per plant (143.66%), total biomass (50.04%), harvest index (53.33%), total number of pods and seeds per plant (119.39% and 128.86%), leaf nitrogen uptake and content (20.83% and 6.44%), chlorophyll-a:b ratio (7.20%), and stem diameter (7.65%) than the intolerant group. Correlation analysis revealed that leaf nitrogen content showed the highest correlation and significantly contributed to seed weight per plant in the tolerant and intolerant groups. Seed weight in the tolerant group was mainly affected by morphological (total biomass and harvest index), physiological (leaf nitrogen content), and yield components (number of pods), whereas that in the intolerant group was influenced only by physiological parameters (nitrogen content). Nitrogen content was considered suitable as a selection indicator for determining the seed yield of intercropped soybean varieties. Furthermore, using soybean tolerant groups for intercropping may be a solution to increase soybean production in Indonesia.

Using NPK fertilizer on several soybean mutant in sub-optimal land

Soybean is one of the important crops and is much needed by people in Indonesia. Most soybean needs in Indonesia are still imported because domestic production is still low. The low soybean production in Indonesia is partly due to the lack of availability of superior varieties that are able to adapt to the environment and the application of cultivation technology that has not been optimal by farmers. The aim of this research is to obtain the best dose and the mutant line of Kipas Merah and the best combination of both in a sub-optimal environment. This study used a factorial randomized block design 3 x 7 with 3 replications. The dose of NPK fertilizer is the first factor consisting of 3 levels (200 kg ha−1, 300 kg ha−1, and 400 kg ha−1). While the second factor is a mutant line of Kipas Merah (A1, A2, A7, A11, and A14), and in addition, as the comparison, we used Kipas Merah (parent) and Deja2 variety. The results showed that the treatment dose of Phonska NPK fertilizer (15:15:15) was better found in the application of a fertilizer dose of 400 kg ha−1 on the parameters a number of seeds per plant, the weight of seeds per plant, the weight of 100 seeds, the weight of seeds per plot and potential yield. The best mutant lines among the tested lines were the A1 and A11 mutant lines. The best A1 line was on the number of seeds per plant and weight of seeds per plant, while A11 was best on parameters of seed weight per plant, the weight of 100 seeds, the weight of seeds per plot, and yield potential.

Effect of soybean variety and pest management on the sustainable production

Pests are one of the limiting factors in increasing soybean production. Pest control carried out by farmers using pesticides is feared to threaten the sustainability of soybean production in Indonesia. This study aimed to identify the effect of different pest management systems and various soybean varieties on pest population dynamics, abundance and diversity of natural enemies, plant damage, and soybean production. A split plot design with three replications was applied, where the main plot was pest management systems i.e. (1) control (which received neither chemicals nor integrated pest management), (2) chemical control, and (3) integrated pest management, and the sub-plot was soybean varieties i.e. (1) Anjasmoro, (2) Demas 1, and (3) Dering 1. Results indicated that variety affects pest diversity and abundance, however, it affected leaf damage, pod damage, and production. The pest management systems influenced the diversity and abundance of pests and natural enemies, plant damage, and production. Interaction between variety and pest management system affected plant damage. We conclude that the use of resistant varieties combined with integrated pest management could reduce plant damage, maintain the natural enemy population, and optimize soybean production.

Growth and production of soybean on different inoculant sources of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and water saturation periods

Production expansion to suboptimal areas such as tidal land through the application of integrated land management technology is an effort to increase soybean production in Indonesia. The study aimed to evaluate the morphophysiological response of soybean treated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation and duration of water saturation in tidal land. The study was conducted in April-October 2021 in the plastic house of the Research Field of the Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Palembang. The experiment used a randomized complete block design with two factors and 3 replications. The first factor was the source of AMF propagations (without inoculations, corn inoculants, soybean inoculants, sugarcane inoculants, and soybean-sugarcane inoculants). The second factor was the water saturation periods (0, 2, and 4 months since planting), so there are 15 treatments. The results showed that the interaction between the inoculant sources and the duration of water saturation had no significant effect on all parameters. The inoculant propagated in the media of sugarcane produced the highest effect as compared to other treatments. The water saturation for 2 or 4 months since planting gave soybean plants a better morphophysiological response than conventional cultivation.

PENGARUH KEDALAMAN MUKA AIR TANAH TERHADAP PERTUMBUHAN DAN PRODUKSI SERTA MUTU FISIOLOGIS BENIH KEDELAI (Glycine max (L) Merril) YANG DIHASILKAN

Soybean production in Indonesia has decreased year by year. This is caused by high rainfall potentially causing water-saturated land. This is due to heavy rain which can cause the water to become saturated. Implementation of drainage and groundwater depth control is expected to increase soybean productivity. The purpose of this study is to determine the best groundwater depth for growth, production and physiological quality of soybeans produced. The study was conducted at the Experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Riau from February to May 2019. The depth of the groundwater used was 5 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm, and control treatment. The parameters observed were plant height and number of nodes, flowering age, age of harvest, number of seeds per plant, dry weight of seeds per plant, the weight of 100 seeds per plant, the suitable percentage for seed, standard germination test, and index value test. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance then continued with Duncan's New Multiple Range Test at the 5% level. The results showed that a depth of 5 cm, which produces poor aeration, leads to unoptimal absorption of nutrients, thus plant height and number of nodes, number of seeds per plant, dry seed weight per plant, 100 seed weight per and the suitable percentage for seed decreased. In the treatment, a water level of 20 cm from the soil gave the best results in terms of seed growth, production and physiological quality due to good ventilation, sufficient water availability and optimal absorption of nutrients.

Strategies to increase soybean production by increasing the distribution of new superior varieties

Soybean production in Indonesia shows a downward trend over time, causing an increase in dependence on imports because the demand for soybeans is much greater. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase production by increasing productivity by using new soybean varieties, which are still very limited in distribution. This paper aims to identify the distribution of new soybean varieties, analyze the problems and factors affecting the distribution of new soybean varieties, and formulate strategies to increase the distribution of new soybean varieties. The study was conducted in the West Java and Central Java Provinces. The analysis method used in the study was qualitative descriptive. The analysis results show that in 2015-2019, soybean production in Indonesia, including in West Java and Central Java, shows a downward trend. Of the total distribution area of soybean varieties, the dominant varieties cultivated are Anjasmoro (61.48%), Wilis (10.66%), Grobogan (9.81%), Argomulyo (6.65%), and Baluran (4.01%). Meanwhile, the distribution of new soybean varieties is still very low, including Dena 1 variety (4.01%) and other new soybean varieties with a distribution area of less than 0.1% of the total distribution area. To increase the distribution of new soybean varieties, one of them can be done by developing seed breeders at the farmer level. Thus, the availability of the seeds of new soybean varieties can increase and farmers will find it easier to obtain these seeds.

Acid soil tolerance of 28 soybean varieties in hydroponics and soil-based evaluation

Utilization of marginal soil plays important role in improving soybean production in Indonesia. Soybean breeding program targeting high yielding varieties and tolerant to acid soils is estimated to be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach in improving plant productivity on acid soil. The aim of this research was to study plant response under acid soil stress and to identify tolerant and sensitive genotype which might be useful for further breeding program. The experiment was conducted using 28 soybean varieties as genetic material. The experiment was carried out in two parts, including seedling evaluation in hydroponics and plant growth evaluation in polybag using acid soil. The first experiment was arranged in factorial randomized block design, consisting of genotype, pH, and AlCl3 treatment as the factors with 5 replications. The second experiment was conducted using randomized complete block design with 5 replications to identify the plant growth in different genotype and acid soil conditions. The results showed that the low pH and high Al inhibits seedlings root growth of soybean genotypes. The estimation of STI from root and shoot dry weight suggests Detam 1 as the most tolerant genotype followed by other varieties with lower level of tolerance. Plant response was different each genotype to both seedling evaluation in hydroponics and plant growth evaluation using acid soil.

Does soybean production in indonesia still have competitiveness advantages? a policy analysis matrix approach

The soybean production in Indonesia still faces several challenges causing production depended on import supplies. This paper aims to assess the competitiveness advantages of soybean production. Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) was used to examine its competitiveness using secondary data and deliberating results of previous studies. The results of the study in 2015 showed that domestic production still could afford private and social prices. Soybean nearly did not show competitiveness advantages reflected from the ratio of DRC and PCR that were almost one. The government interventions brought various impacts, for instance farmers paid cheaper inputs by 26.67% and there was inefficiency of government policy towards the output. The government policy to assure profit in the long term was also insufficient reflected from the EPC (1.03) and PC (0.06). From the SRP variable, it described that the government not all farmers received a benefit from the government policy. The sensitivity analysis resulted: (i) the combination of increasing soybean price + procurement price at 8,000 IDR/kg and (ii) the increasing import tariff by 5% + procurement price at 8,000 IDR/kg provided the most favorable impacts.

Analysis of Indonesian Soybean Production Result by Intercropping Plants

Domestic soybean production in Indonesia is still lack in fulfilling the country’s demand. The soybean import rate is still high, for about 253% from the domestic need. Strategies were studied and developed to increase the domestic soybean production that could reduce the import rate. The objective of this study was planting domestic soybean together with vegetable crops, named intercropping method, in order to increase the production to meet the soybean demand. The principle of this research is testing some variables that affect the fulfillment of soybean needs to reduce imports. The research was conducted by experimentally using five superior varieties of Raja Basa, Mutiara 1, Dega 1, Dena 1, and Grobogan, to be grown next to small red chilli, long green eggplant and sweet corn plants. The experiments and data collection were carried out in carried out in Pulungdowo Village. The data processing and analysis were using an experimental design that is a random block design with a confidence level of 95%. The results showed that there was no difference in the use of varieties with vegetable crops on soybean production, but each Indonesian soybean variety has production potential according to the profile of the variety.

Genetic advance on tandem selection of several soybean genotypes

Soybean consumption in Indonesia continues to increase with increasing population. However, soybean production in Indonesia is still not able to fulfil domestic needs. Increasing soybean production both in quantity and quality continues to be done through plant breeding strategies. Selection is carried out to select suitable characters for breeding purposes. The effectiveness and efficiency of selection is influenced by the amount genetic advance. This study aims to determine the genetic advance of soybean by tandem selection. This research was conducted using fourteen treatments of the seventh generation of soybean plant genotypes with three replications. The selection method used was tandem selection. The data were obtained from observations of the agronomic characters of soybean plants selected from the tandem selection. The data was analyzed using variance, and then continued with the 5% Scott-Knott test, and genetic advance. The genetic advance resulted from this study were as follows: classified as low were flowering age with 4.94%, and harvesting age with 7.80%; classified as moderate was yield per plant with 12.36%; classified as high were plant height with 23.36%, the number of productive branches with 17.66%, the number of fertile nodes with 29.26%, 100 grain weight with 17.00%, and the number of pods planted with 27.67%.

Pod Positions on the Plant Associated with Pod Shattering Resistance in Soybean Genotypes

Background: One of the major constraints of soybean production in Indonesia is pod shattering which occurs after soybean pod maturity. This study aimed to identify the pod shattering resistance of different pod positions in the plant stem. Methods: Sixteen genotypes were evaluated in the field research during the dry season 2019. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replicates. Ten sample plants were randomly taken after R8 phase. Plant was divided into three parts, i.e. upper part, middle part and lower part. The shattering evaluation was done using the oven-dry method in the laboratory. The observation on the number of shattered pods was measured for each part of plant stem. Result: Pod shattering was different among the pod positions as well as among genotypes. One genotype was categorized as resistant, eight genotypes were moderate, six genotypes were susceptible and one genotype was highly susceptible. The highest percentage of the shattered pods was in the lower part of the plant stem, followed by the middle and upper part, respectively. The resistant genotypes showed the shattered pods mostly in the lower part of the stem, the moderate genotypes showed the shattered pods mostly in the lower and middle part of the stem and the susceptible genotypes shattered in all part of the stem.
