Production of cellulose nanocrystals from the waste banana (M. Oranta) tree rachis fiber as a reinforcement to fabricate useful bionanocomposite

It is crucial to produce CNCs from the waste biomass of secondary plants to reduce the extra pressure on primary plants which have other advantageous applications in many sectors. Whereas the useless banana (M. oranta) rachis after harvesting its edible part could be a very new and beneficial one. Meanwhile, several well-known methods could be conducted, namely water retting, scouring, alkali treatment, chlorite bleaching, and acid hydrolysis, to yield high-quality CNCs. The samples of all stages were characterized by several state-of-the-art techniques, namely FTIR-ATR, TGA, FESEM, XRD, UV-vis-NIR, DLS, and zeta potential analysis, for a better understanding of their structural properties/purity. However, obtained results recommended that the CNCs have shown extensive active edges, greater thermal improvement up to 700°C, high crystallinity around 81.07±0.15% with JCPDS-ICDD card number (00-056-1718), a honeycomb-like porous microstructure, and promising spherical shapes along with an average size around 50nm. Additionally, the newly produced CNCs were free from all impurities and coloring materials and revealed a higher negatively charged surface around -45mV. Therefore, due to these outstanding features, banana rachis CNCs with a high yield (around 82.05±0.06%) would be beneficially used as promising reinforcement to fabricate useful bionanocomposite for various applications to replace fossil-based hazardous synthetic materials.

Sulfuric acid solvolysis of cellulose in a butanol-1/benzene mixture for isolating cellulose nanocrystals

The absence of a universal method for isolating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) has prompted researchers to explore alternative approaches to traditional sulfuric acid hydrolysis. In this study, the authors continue their previous research by investigating CNC synthesis through cellulose solvolysis in an alcoholic environment. The CNCs were successfully obtained utilizing controlled sulfuric acid solvolysis of sulfate cellulose in a butanol-1/benzene mixture. The highest CNC yield (over 60 %) was achieved at strictly controlled acid-to-benzene ratios in a butanol-1/benzene/sulfuric acid reaction mixture, with a significant reduction in the optimal acid concentration. The study also analyzes the physicochemical properties of the isolated CNCs. No surface alkylation of the synthesized CNCs was observed during the cellulose solvolysis in the butanol-1/benzene mixture. Besides, the properties of these CNCs closely resembled those obtained through traditional sulfuric acid hydrolysis. The paper also discusses the potential mechanism of cellulose solvolysis in the process of CNC production.

Recycled ionic liquid vs. deep eutectic solvent in cellulose nanocrystals production: Characterization, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle assessment

Three scenarios involving aqueous mixtures of neoteric solvents have been evaluated as solvents and catalysts for the cellulose hydrolysis reaction to obtain CNC in high yields (>70%). The scenarios considered were: scenario 1 (S1) involves a recyclable ionic liquid dilution of [Hmim][(HSO4)(H2SO4)]/H2O (64 wt% IL); scenario 2 (S2) another recyclable dilution of [Hmim][(HSO4)(H2SO4)]//H2O (80 wt% IL) and scenario 3 (S3) a non-recyclable ternary deep eutectic solvent (60 wt% DES: choline chloride: oxalic acid/30 wt% PA/10 wt% water). Experimental analysis, techno-economic, and life cycle analysis (LCA) indicate that S1 emerges as a suitable scenario among the three analyzed. S1 demonstrated the highest competitiveness, with a lower raw material cost per gram of CNC produced (US$0.81/g) and lower environmental contributions concerning climate change and fossil fuel depletion, accounting mainly for its recyclability. Therefore, the recyclable dilution of 64 wt% IL used in S1 appears to be the most viable option for sustainable and environmentally conscious CNC production. Besides, the physicochemical properties of the CNC were revealed: aspect ratio range 7–8, high dispersion stability related to zeta potential > −40 mV, good crystallinity range 50–80%, and thermal stability with Tonset> 300 °C. These results guided towards a scenario with crucial advantages: a diluted IL that retains its acidity after reuse cycles by a facile recovery process, maintaining high CNC production performance and providing low environmental impacts.

Prospective life cycle assessment: Identifying the most promising methods for sustainable cellulose nanocrystal production

Concerted endeavors are presently in progress to discern eco-friendlier methods for cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) production, negating the conventional reliance on hazardous concentrated sulfuric acids. Despite the proliferation of methods purported to be environmentally sound, their assertions often lack rigorous scrutiny, relying on theoretical postulations. This study presents the first prospective glimpse into their environmental performance utilizing a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology from cradle-to-gate. The results transpired that many of the vaunted environmentally-friendly methods resulted in higher environmental loads compared to the traditional method, due to lower conversion rates and higher reaction energy demand. Notably, only specific methods demonstrate lower endpoint impact scores, including deep eutectic solvent extraction (−48 %), ammonium persulfate-assisted oxidation (−62 %), sulfuric acid hydrolysis in glycerol medium (−56 %), and enzymatic hydrolysis (−40 %). Their primary green attributes associate with the utilization of solvents carrying lower climate impact and toxicity level. The reaction stage carries the heaviest burden due to the increased energy required to counteract modest reactivities of the milder solvents. As mitigation strategies, heat integration and by-product recovery for energy generation were explored, resulting in emission reductions of 11–26 % and 41–68 %, respectively, across the proven eco-friendlier methods. This study comprehensively validated a roster of genuinely green candidates, offering a more sustainable prospect than traditional methods and paving the way for large-scale green CNC production.

Characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from Zhombwe (Neorautanenia brachypus (harms) CA Sm.) bagasse.

Increased awareness of environmental pollution has changed focus to the use of biodegradable materials because they lack persistence in the environment. This article focused on the production of cellulose nanocrystals from Zhombwe, Neorautanenia brachypus (Harms) CA Sm. bagasse using steam explosion, alkaline treatment, bleaching, purification, and acid hydrolysis. The chemical composition after the treatments was determined using TAPPI standards. Further characterization was done using x-ray Diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The nanoscale dimensions and morphology of the extracted nanocrystals was determined through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). FTIR spectroscopy and DSC confirmed the removal of noncellulosic compounds. XRD revealed that N. brachypus bagasse contained cellulose type I, which partly endured morphological change to polymorph II after purification and hydrolysis. FE-SEM revealed elliptical to rod-shaped structures after acid hydrolysis, which had a mean length and width of 1103 nm and 597 nm respectively. TAPPI tests revealed that successive chemical treatments increased crystallinity by 29.7%, enriched cellulose content by 74.2%, reduced lignin content by 21.7%, and reduced hemicellulose to less than 1%. The semicrystalline nature of the material produced in our work is a promising candidate for swelling hydrogel applications in areas such as wound dressing, heavy metal removal, controlled drug delivery, agriculture, and sanitary products. Future studies may focus on surface modification of nanocrystals to improve their thermal stability and therefore expand their range for potential industrial applications.

Effect of Hydrochloric Acid Hydrolysis under Sonication and Hydrothermal Process to Produce Cellulose Nanocrystals from Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (OPEFB).

This paper presents an approach for hydrolyzing cellulose nanocrystals from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) presented through hydrochloric acid hydrolysis under sonication-hydrothermal conditions. Differences in concentration, reaction time, and acid-to-cellulose ratio affect toward the yield, crystallinity, microstructure, and thermal stability were obtained. The highest yield of cellulose nanocrystals up to 74.82%, crystallinity up to 78.59%, and a maximum degradation temperature (Tmax) of 339.82 °C were achieved through hydrolysis using 3 M HCl at 110 °C during 1 h. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated a higher diffraction peak pattern at 2θ = 22.6° and a low diffraction peak pattern at 2θ = 18°. All cellulose nanocrystals showed a crystalline size of under 1 nm, and it was indicated that the sonication-hydrothermal process could reduce the crystalline size of cellulose. Infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that a deletion of lignin and hemicellulose was demonstrated in the spectrum. Cellulose nanocrystal morphology showed a more compact structure and well-ordered surface arrangement than cellulose. Cellulose nanocrystals also had good thermal stability, as a high maximum degradation temperature was indicated, where CNC-D1 began degrading at temperatures (T0) of 307.09 °C and decomposed (Tmax) at 340.56 °C.

Two-response surface design optimization of carboxylated CNCs with super high thermal stability and dye removal capability

Discharging wastewater from industrial dyeing and printing processes poses a significant environmental threat, necessitating green and efficient adsorbents. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have emerged as a promising option for dye adsorbing. However, the industrial production and commercialization of CNCs still faced low yield, time-consuming, and uneco-friendly. In this study, we proposed a facile hydrochloric/maleic acid (HCl/C4H4O4) hydrolysis method to synthesize carboxylated CNCs using Box-Behnken design and dual response surface design, which can systematically investigate the effect of experimental factors (temperature, time and HCl/C4H4O volume ratio) on the final products. The rod-liked carboxylated CNCs gave the highest yield of 90.50 %, maximum carboxyl content of 1.29 mmol/g, and efficient dye removal ratio of 91.5 %. Furthermore, compared to CNCs obtained by commonly sulfuric acid hydrolysis way (CNCs-S) with a Tmax of 242.6 °C, the CNCs extracted at 5 h exhibited significantly improved thermal stability with Tmax reaching 351.2 °C. The enriched carboxyl content and excellent thermal stability show potential wastewater treatment applications under harsh conditions.

Characterization and isolation method of Gigantochloa scortechinii (Buluh Semantan) cellulose nanocrystals

This study explored the impact of sodium hydroxide and benzoylation treatment on the production of cellulose nanocrystals from Semantan bamboo (Gigantochloa scortechinii). Bamboo cellulose nanocrystals (BCNs) were obtained via acid hydrolysis, with the effectiveness of an isolation method and chemical treatments demonstrated in removing non-cellulosic constituents. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a crystalline cellulose II structure for benzoylated BCN (B) and a crystalline cellulose I structure for NaOH-treated BCN (S), with BCN (S) exhibiting a higher crystallinity index (80.55 %) compared to BCN (B) (67.87 %). The yield of BCN (B) (23.68 ± 1.10 %) was higher than BCN (S) (20.65 ± 2.21 %). Transmission electron microscopy images showed a mean diameter of 7.95 ± 2.79 nm for BCN (S) and 9.22 ± 3.38 nm for BCN (B). Thermogravimetric analysis indicated lower thermal stability for BCN (B) compared to BCN (S), with charcoal residues at 600 °C of 31.06 % and 22 %, respectively. Zeta potential values were −41.60 ± 1.97 mV for BCN (S) and −21.80 ± 2.54 mV for BCN (B). Gigantochloa scortechinii holds significant potential for sustainable and eco-friendly applications in the construction, furniture, and renewable energy industries. These findings highlight the versatility and potential of BCNs derived from Gigantochloa scortechinii for various applications.

Life cycle assessment of cellulose nanocrystals prepared from crop straw by sequential periodate-chlorite oxidation

Life cycle assessment (LCA) of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) prepared by sequential periodate-chlorite oxidation (SPCO) remains limited. In this study, the environmental impacts of CNC preparation at lab (LAB) and industrial (IND) scales were assessed based on the eFootprint system and data from the Chinese Life Cycle Database (CLCD). At the LAB scale, the global warming potential (GWP) reached 3410 kg CO2 eq/kg CNC. The contributions of the U2 (pulp making), U3 (periodate oxidation), U5 (concentration), and U6 (freeze-drying) unit processes were 42.9%, 22.8%, 21.3%, and 10.6%, respectively. At the IND scale, the GWP was reduced by one order of magnitude to 141 kg CO2 eq/kg CNC, and most of the other 13 category indicators of environmental impact (acidification, eutrophication, ecotoxicity, human toxicity, etc.) also showed the same trend. The contribution of the unit process U5 exceeded 50% in the 12 environmental impact indicators. The large contribution of U5 was attributable to the extensive use of ethanol. At the industrial scale, the GWP was reduced to 22.7 kg CO2 eq/kg CNC when the periodate was recycled, and an ultrafiltration membrane system was used to concentrate CNC solutions. The environmental impact of CNC prepared by SPCO was lower than that of CNC prepared by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. This study comprehensively assessed the potential environmental impacts of CNC production on an industrial scale and provided valuable data for future industrial-scale production of CNC and for comparison with alternative products.

Cellulose nanocrystal filled synthetic rubber: Sustainable production, environmental assessment and end-of-life biodegradation by polyphagous pests

Plastic and rubber productions have reached staggering levels, leading to environmental concerns and accumulation of microplastics (MPs) rising in ecosystems. Rubber tires, a major source of MPs, pose further challenges due to excessive use of carbon black (CB) nanofillers in their manufacturing process, stresses on adding the element of sustainability to these products. This study emphasizes on the production of bio-based cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) filled synthetic rubber with sustainability assessment through life cycle assessment (LCA). It investigates the end-of-life (EOL) biodegradation potentials of rubber waste using a polyphagous pest, fall armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda). The results revealed that the production of CNC filled rubber demonstrate enhanced modulus compared to CB nanofillers, while requires substantial resource consumption, impacting abiotic resource depletion–fossil fuels (ADPf), freshwater ecotoxicity (CTUe), global warming potential (GWP), particulate matter (PM) and other impact categories. Emissions associated with CNC filled rubber during EOL phase are comparatively lower than CB, rendering CNC based rubbers a potentially viable choice from an environmental sustainability perspective. EOL pest biodegradation of CNC filled rubber showed negligible to no discernible physiological effects, potentially attributed to the presence of a diverse gut microbiota community in FAW (S. frugiperda). These findings highlight the relationship between physiochemical properties and CNC biodegradability in synthetic rubbers, aiding the development of sustainable EOL strategies for rubber waste management.

Screening of salt hydrates and cellulose nanocrystal composites for thermochemical energy storage using life cycle assessment

Salt hydrate systems via thermochemical reactions can provide thermal storage for renewable-sourced alternatives to traditional heating systems like natural gas. In this study, we use life cycle analysis (LCA) along with the material prices to screen salts based on environmental impact and cost. Additionally, we performed LCA of producing a composite material of salt and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) at a weight ratio of four to one. CNC is a stabilizing agent for salt. We assessed the salt-CNC composites based on a laboratory scale and scaled-up processing to identify low environmental impact formulations and to identify high environmental impact processes in the composite production. In general, lanthanum chloride, lithium hydroxide, and lithium chloride should be avoided due to high environmental impact or cost. For pure salts, our results showed magnesium sulfate, zinc sulfate, and calcium chloride are typically preferred with a close second tier of magnesium and strontium chlorides and strontium bromide. For the composite material, magnesium sulfate was preferred followed by zinc sulfate, sodium sulfide, and strontium chloride. CNC has a significant environmental impact, contributing over 50% of the environmental impact for these composites. Therefore, CNC production with lower environmental impacts needs to be pursued. In composite production, the environmental impact of mixing and sonication can be reduced by scaling production. However, drying remains a high-impact process. These results can help guide salt selection for other salt-based thermochemical materials and further development of the salt-CNC composite.

Cellulose nanocrystals from marine algae Cladophora glomerata by using microwave-assisted extraction

Algae of the order Cladophorales are the source of a unique nanocellulose with high crystallinity and a large aspect ratio, enabling broad surface modification. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are obtained via acid hydrolysis of nanocellulose, which is highly crystalline. However, the production of CNCs from Cladophorales algae is limited and still uses a conventional heating method. Thus, this study aimed to develop a microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) method for fast and efficient extraction of CNCs from Cladophora glomerata algae. Additionally, we replaced the use of hypochlorite with H2O2, which is more environmentally friendly, and compared the CNCs obtained from the conventional methods with our new method. The functional structure of CNCs was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Single-step H2O2 bleaching with MAE yielded the smallest-sized CNCs. Our developed method resulted in the production of CNCs with a high crystallinity index, high thermal stability, and high purity of native cellulose. Additionally, none of the CNCs were toxic to primary normal human dermal fibroblasts. The properties of the isolated CNCs may make them useful materials in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

Acetic acid as a protic solvent for reducing sulphuric acid concentrations in the production of cellulose nanocrystals alongside transition metal co-catalysts

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) conventionally involve highly concentrated sulphuric acid, which typically resulted in the formation of undesirable by-products. Although less corrosive mineral acids have been explored as alternatives, high concentrations are still required. In this study, CNC was successfully isolated from Leucaena leucocephala wood using mild sulphuric acid with acetic acid as protic solvent, and it was further studied with the addition of Lewis acids in the form of multivalent transition metal salts as co-catalyst. Selected divalent and trivalent transition metal salts including (Cr(NO3)3, Fe(NO3)3, Co(NO3)2, and Ni(NO3)2) were investigated. The morphology, chemical structure, particle size, and physicochemical properties of the CNCs were determined. Controlled depolymerization of cellulose was observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rod-like morphology for all CNCs was obtained during the hydrolysis process with the smallest CNC particles found at an average length of 278.1 ± 35.1 nm and a diameter of 13.4 ± 3.0 nm. The results showed that higher valence state metal ions resulted in better cellulose hydrolysis efficiency. In addition, the use of transition metal salt as a co-catalyst improved production efficiency and minimised carbonization of CNC while maintaining desired crystallinity and thermal properties.

Electromediated Oxidation of Hydrolysed Bacterial Cellulose

The state-of-the-art method to isolate cellulose nanofibres employs a 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl (TEMPO)/NaBr/NaClO system, where the primary alcohols on the surface of cellulose microfibrils are oxidised. However, the large consumption of hypochlorite in this system makes it problematic for industrial implementation. Previously, electrochemical oxidation with a TEMPO catalyst has been reported for the preparation of cellulose nanofibres. Here, we present a study on the electromediated oxidation of bacterial cellulose (BC), the purest form of cellulose. BC has been used in a hydrolysed form, enabling the electromediated preparation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which is generally deemed even more costly than the preparation of cellulose nanofibres.In this work, the electromediated oxidation and cyclic voltammetry were performed in an electrochemical cell, which featured three electrodes: A Hg|Hg2SO4|K2SO4 reference electrode, a titanium net counter electrode, and a carbon foam working electrode, offering a high surface area. A static potential of 0.5 V was applied during the chronoamperometry and explored oxidation times were 3, 5, 9, 12 and 24 h.Using a TEMPO catalyst, the electromediated oxidation was applied to hydrolysed and non-hydrolysed BC fibres in a pH 10 buffer. The C6 primary hydroxyls of BC were successfully converted to sodium carboxylate groups. By the application of the TEMPO electro-mediated oxidation to hydrolysed BC for 9 h, high carboxylate and aldehyde concentrations of 1.4 and 0.3 mmol/g, respectively, were formed in the oxidized fibre. The carboxylate and aldehyde content was determined by a conductometric titration method. Surface morphologies after oxidation were investigated, showing alteration of the microfibril morphology for BC and the production of cellulose nanocrystals for hydrolysed BC. Hence, we present an effective and environmentally friendly route, which is particularly suitable for the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals.

Harmonized Life-Cycle Inventories of Nanocellulose and Its Application in Composites.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and nanofibers (CNF) have been broadly studied as renewable nanomaterials for various applications, including additives in cement and plastics composites. Herein, life cycle inventories for 18 previously examined processes are harmonized, and the impacts of CNC and CNF production are compared with a particular focus on GHG emissions. Findings show wide variations in GHG emissions between process designs, from 1.8-1100 kg CO2-eq/kg nanocellulose. Mechanical and enzymatic processes are identified as the lowest GHG emission methods to produce CNCs and CNFs. For most processes, energy consumption and chemical use are the primary sources of emissions. However, on a mass basis, for all examined production methods and impact categories (except CO emissions), CNC and CNF production emissions are higher than Portland cement and, in most cases, are higher than polylactic acid. This work highlights the need to carefully consider process design to prevent potential high emissions from CNCs and CNF production despite their renewable feedstock, and results show the magnitude of conventional material that must be offset through improved performance for these materials to be environmentally favorable.

Understanding the environmental impacts of large-scale cellulose nanocrystals production: Case studies in regions dependent on renewable and fossil fuel energy sources

Favorable functional properties of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in several end-use applications as well as its ‘green’ credential as a bio-based material, stimulate significant interest in scaling up the manufacture of CNCs. As in any other process, there exist several design options for the overall process and decisions on adoption of a specific plant configuration should be based on the economic as well as the environmental data, preferably from the life cycle assessment (LCA) perspective. In this study we establish a benchmark LCA of a conceptual large-scale CNC manufacturing process based on sulfuric acid hydrolysis. We then employ the benchmark process model to explore several plant configurations under different acid recycling scenarios and targeting two different CNC materials, revealing key findings: (1) without acid recycling environmental impacts are dominated by input materials; (2) introducing acid recycling shifts environmental impacts from input materials to energy consumption: thus, complete acid recycling requires ∼ 14 times more energy; (3) based on the LCA study we recommend optimizing plant configuration through partial acid recycling for a balance between materials and energy consumption. Regions with abundant low-carbon energy, like Quebec and Sweden, favour high acid recycling, while fossil-dominated regions benefit from limited acid recycling. This study provides benchmark values of LCA impacts of CNC manufacture, which could be used for the assessment of carbon footprint and other environmental metrics of final products manufactured from CNCs.

A ternary eutectic solvent for cellulose nanocrystal production: exploring the recyclability and pre-pilot scale-up.

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) formed using choline chloride (ChCl), p-toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA) of stoichiometry ChCl: pTSA (1:1) and (1:2), and its ternary eutectic mixtures with phosphoric acid (PA) 85% as an additive (ChCl: pTSA: PA) were evaluated for cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) isolation. Initially, the hydrolytic efficiency to produce CNC of each DES was compared before and after adding phosphoric acid by Hammett acidity parameters and the Gutmann acceptor number. Moreover, different DES molar ratios and reaction time were studied at 80°C for CNC optimization. The nanomaterial characteristics were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The ternary eutectic mixture ChCl: pTSA: PA molar ratio (1:1:1.35) was chosen as a suitable recyclable ternary system at the laboratory scale. A CNC yield of about 80% was obtained from the hydrolysis of commercial cellulose in five cycles of recovery, but it dropped to 35% in pre-pilot scaling. However, no variation in the average size of the resulting CNC was observed (132 ± 50nm x 23 ± 4nm), which presented high thermal stability (Tmax 362°C) and high crystallinity of about 80% after 3h of reaction time.

Preparation of cellulose nanocrystals from commercial dissolving pulp using an engineered cellulase system

There is increasing attention to the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from lignocellulosic biomass by enzymatic hydrolysis with cellulase. In this study, the feasibility of the application of a cellulase system from engineered strain Penicillium oxalicum cEES in the production of CNCs was assessed. Using commercial eucalyptus dissolving pulp (EDP) as substrate, the CNCs were successfully obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis with the cellulase cEES, and the total yields of CNCs reached 15.7% through three-step enzymatic hydrolysis of total 72 h (24 h for each step). The prepared CNCs were characterized and found that their crystallinity and thermal stability were higher than that of EDP. In the later stage of enzymatic hydrolysis, the process efficiency of enzymatic preparation of CNCs greatly decreased because of the high crystallinity of cellulosic substrate, and a simple homogenization treatment can promote the enzymatic hydrolysis, as well as produce fusiform CNCs with more uniform size and more fermentable sugar that could be further converted into fuels and bulk chemicals through fermentation.
