Customisation and co-creation revisited: Do user types and engagement strategies matter for product innovation success?

User engagement is widely recognised as beneficial for the innovation efforts of firms scarce with internal resources but our knowledge about the relevance of user types and engagement strategies is scarce and mostly limited to the front-end phases of the innovation process. To fill this gap, we use data from over 10,000 companies operating in four emerging innovation ecosystems in Central Europe and examine the contribution of users to product development, distribution, market positioning and the commercialisation of innovations. The results show that user engagement through customisation and co-creation promotes the success of the innovation process, with the impact of co-creation being much stronger. Consumers, intermediary users (businesses) and public sector users play different roles at different stages of innovation. These findings provide important insights for firms seeking to optimise their user engagement strategies in product innovation management.

Implementation of the Halal Assurance System and MSME Business Development Strategy: the Case of a Coffee Shop

This study aims to help a micro-small-medium enterprise (MSME), in this case Dakara Coffee, meet the requirements of HAS 23000. The identification carried out in this study was in the form of primary and secondary identification to apply the HAS Manual. The HAS Manual is designed based on the actual conditions of Dakara Coffee and contains 11 HAS criteria. The results showed that several identified food and beverage ingredients did not meet the HAS 23000 criteria and did not have supporting documents. Several improvements are then recommended such as replacing materials that do not comply with HAS 23000 and completing documents for food and beverage ingredients. Employing AHP method, the main priority for Dakara Coffee business development is location, followed by various other aspects such as halal management, branding strategy, product innovation, and organisational management.

An integrated design concept evaluation model based on interval valued picture fuzzy set and improved GRP method.

The objective of this research is to enhance the precision and efficiency of design concept assessments during the initial stages of new product creation. Design concept evaluation, which occurs at the end of the conceptual design phase, is a critical step in product development. The outcome of this evaluation significantly impacts the product's eventual success, as flawed design concepts are difficult to remedy in later stages. However, the evaluation of new product concepts is a procedure that encompasses elements of subjectivity and ambiguity. In order to deal with the problem, a novel decision-making method for choosing more logical new product concepts is introduced. Basically, the evaluation process is outlined in three main phases: the construction of evaluation index system for design concept alternatives, the calculation of weights for evaluation criteria and decision-makers, the selection of the best design concept alternatives. These stages are composed of a hybrid method based on kano model, multiplicative analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, the entropy of IVPFS and improved grey relational projection (GRP) under interval-valued picture fuzzy set (IVPFS). The novel approach integrates the strength of interval-valued picture fuzzy number in handling vagueness, the advantage of multiplicative AHP and the merit of improved GRP method in modelling multi-criteria decision-making. In final, the effectiveness of the proposed model is validated through comparisons with other models. The potential applications of this study include but are not limited to product development, industrial design, and innovation management, providing decision-makers with a more accurate and comprehensive design concept evaluation tool.

Patagonia’s Substandard Brand Awareness in China

Patagonia has consistently employed marketing methods that deviate from conventional approaches. Nevertheless, its performance in the Chinese market has consistently fallen below expectations. The objective of this research is to examine the factors contributing to the limited recognition of Patagonia within the Chinese market. This study examines the diverse factors that exert influence on the level of brand awareness of Patagonia in the Chinese market. By doing a comprehensive analysis of several published papers and reports, one notable source being an article titled "Competitive Advantage through Product Performance Innovation in a Competitive Market" published in the Journal of Product Innovation Management, it has been identified that there exists a weakness in Patagonia's product innovation strategy as observed in its recent product launches. The study findings indicate that Patagonia's underwhelming success can be attributed to insufficient promotional techniques, uneven product innovation, and a dearth of distinctive brand identity. Furthermore, the strategic utilization of social media, collaborative partnerships with other brands, heightened allocation of resources towards research and development, innovative designs, improved product positioning, and a more explicit articulation of brand values serve to address the challenges that Patagonia encounters while entering the Chinese market. This study asserts that Patagonia's advancement in the Chinese market has been impeded by three primary factors: inadequate marketing techniques, limited product innovation, and a lack of a distinct brand identity. Therefore, in order to surmount these obstacles, it is imperative for Patagonia to adopt and execute the answers and recommendations outlined in this research.

MSME Development Strategy in Pekarungan village

Background. I carry out this community service in Pekarungan Village in Sukodono District, Sidoarjo Regency. Purpose. This village is one of 16 villages in Sukodono District which has the potential for the MSME sector which operates in various business sectors. Pekarungan Village has 225 MSMEs which have great potential to improve the community's economy. One of the potential areas of MSMEs in Pekarungan Village is the culinary center or MSMEs. Method. The method that I will use for this research is a qualitative method by processing primary and secondary data. Through this program, I want to advance and develop the MSME sector in Pekarungan village by implementing MSME development strategies. Results. Culinary in Pekarungan village is still facing several business development problems. These problems are related to ownership, capital and lack of knowledge about product innovation and financial management. Conclusion. GANEFA peanut brittle has its own unique taste with very unique topping variants. According to one buyer, this peanut brittle is different from the others in terms of packaging and this peanut brittle is good. So peanut brittle is one food that can increase the market price significantly if it has good packaging.

Research and Analysis on the Development Strategy of Investment Banking Business of Commercial Banks in China

Against the backdrop of the growing financial industry, the development of investment banking has become an inevitable trend for commercial banks, and certain results have been achieved so far. However, in recent years, there are some issues regarding the development of investment banking business operations in commercial banks identified in the study, such as insufficient product innovation and insufficient business risk management capability. This paper analyzes the environment using the "PEST" analysis. Finally, the development direction is summarized by sorting out the development status, problems and reasons, enhancing innovation capabilities and borrowing the power of fintech can all provide good ideas for commercial banks to develop their investment banking business. This paper can provide ideas for other commercial banks facing the problem of developing investment banking business.

Developing a Sustainability Measurement for Innovation Performance for the Food Industry

While the significance of innovation management in sustaining competitiveness for businesses is widely recognized, there is an absence of research in the food industry regarding the measurement of sustainability outcomes resulting from innovation efforts. This research endeavors to construct a comprehensive measurement framework for assessing innovation performance. The primary objective is to examine the measures to evaluate the success the success of product innovation management concerning the sustainability objectives of organizations This study employs Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) on an online survey of 354 Thai food manufacturers to investigate the robust evaluation of innovation performance in the food sector. The key findings reveal that the proposed measurement instrument for innovation management performance has been validated. All sustainability dimensions, including social, economic, and environmental sustainability, have been validated as the appropriate measurement for sustainability as a result of innovation management. The social aspect has the most influence, followed by the economic and environmental aspects. In conclusion, this study offers valuable insights for practitioners aiming to evaluate their innovation management practices by employing the developed measurement scale. By assessing and enhancing their innovation management approaches, organizations can strive for sustainability during dynamic environmental challenges and uncertainties.

Towards Evaluating the Robustness of the Open-Source Product Community under Multiple Attack Strategies

As an emerging product innovation model, open-source innovation has undergone rapid development in recent years. The sustainability and stability of the open-source product community (OSPC) is crucial for product innovation, and the effect that users have on the OSPC’s robustness is an important and closely scrutinized topic. This paper explores the robustness of the OSPC from the aspect of user knowledge contribution. We first construct an OSPC network and analyze its characteristics. An improved node evaluation method is then proposed to identify different types of knowledge contribution nodes. Further, seven node- and edge-based attack strategies are designed to simulate network robustness changes, with evaluation indicators being proposed for structural robustness and knowledge robustness. The results reveal that our proposed node evaluation method can effectively identify nodes of different knowledge contribution types. Additionally, the network is found to have different robustness performance when facing multiple deliberate attacks on three important knowledge contribution node types. Moreover, the network shows different robustness characteristics when facing deliberate attacks on betweenness and weight edges. Our findings can benefit product innovation and OSPC managers by enhancing the robustness of the OSPC network.

Analysis of Business Development for MSMEs In Bandung City

The Indonesian state after the Covid 19 pandemic, has not yet recovered until now the role of MSMEs is very necessary. This is because the potential of MSMEs is currently very large in absorbing labor, in connection with the contribution of MSMEs, the empowerment and development of MSMEs is something that needs to be done continuously. This study aims to determine the role of product innovation, product quality and financial management on the development of MSMEs after the Covid 19 pandemic. The research was conducted on MSMEs in Bandung City. Data collection was carried out on MSMEs using a questionnaire of as many as 100 MSME players in Bandung City. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. From the results of data processing, it is found that Product Innovation, Product Quality and Financial Management partially affect the development of MSME businesses. And together Product Innovation, Product Quality and Financial Management have an effect on Business Development. This means that to carry out business development MSMEs must always make product innovations in the products they produce while maintaining the quality of the products produced. In addition, MSMEs must also carry out structured and correct financial management.

From Covid-19 to conflict: Does environmental regulation and green innovation improve industrial sector decarbonization efforts and environmental management?

During the COVID-19 period, industrial production was slowed or halted due to COVID restrictions and lockdowns, followed by global tensions and conflicts, which created uncertainties for industrial production. Similarly, during this period, the growth in carbon emissions was seen shrinking. However, it is greatly important to explore whether this shrinking trend will continue or whether a new growth pattern could emerge. Considering this, the research was carried out to investigate the relationship between green innovation initiatives and environmental regulations in the process of environmental management and environmental performance in the industrial sector. To do so, the survey-based research methodology using PLS-SEM was adopted, and data was gathered from 279 managers working in the equipment manufacturing industry. Our empirical findings revealed that environmental regulation and green innovation efforts strengthen decarbonization efforts, which further improve environmental management and environmental performance. The mediating role of decarbonization efforts was found to be prominent among green process innovation, environmental management and environmental performance. Moreover, decarbonization serves as a mediator between green product innovation and environmental management. In contrast, we could not verify that decarbonization mediates the relationship between green product innovation and environmental performance. The key findings are greatly important and provide a fresh roadmap for environmental management in the post-COVID era.

POTENTIALS AND GOALS OF MODELS IN STRATEGIC PRODUCT PLANNING AND INNOVATION MANAGEMENT

AbstractNew trends and technologies in product creation increase complexity, but at the same time create new potentials such as efficiency rise in task processing by Artificial Intelligence. Established models in the early phase of product creation such as the W-model or the Aachener Innovation Management model, do not fully exploit these new potentials in the field of strategic product planning and innovation management (SPPIM). For this reason, existing models are analysed in SPPIM in order to derive a requirements profile consisting of potentials and goals for a new model. A new model in SPPIM lays the foundation to support companies in enabling a more efficient task fulfilment by taking advantage of new technologies and trends. To guide the development of advanced SPPIM models, the derived potentials and goals are applied to the guideline VDI 2220:1980.

Advances in the innovation of management: a bibliometric review

As the production model transforms from industrial manufacturing to a knowledge-based economy, management innovation becomes a strong driving force for economic growth and social development. This study examines academic findings on management innovation using the latest bibliometric methods and visualization tools based on papers published in top management journals in the Web of Science database from 2008 to 2022. (1) There are three main research hotspots. Through citation orientation, the research hotspots are business model innovation and environmental innovation; through outcome orientation, the research hotspot is knowledge innovation; and through intermediary orientation, the research hotspot is open innovation. (2) Regarding the distribution of major research institutions, seven institutions in the United States focus on innovation research and have a high impact. Six institutions in the United Kingdom focus on innovation research. Meanwhile, nine and three related institutions in Europe and Asia focus on innovation research, respectively. (3) Distribution of innovation articles in journals, Research Policy, Technovation, Journal of Product Innovation Management, and Industrial Marketing Management, contains the largest number of innovation research articles. Furthermore, this study examines new hot topics with time change and digital innovation. This paper provides the latest overview of innovation research in management and discusses the evolution and development of this field.

The professionalization of innovation management: Evolution and implications

AbstractJust over two decades ago, in a Perspective article in the Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM), Tomkovick and Miller, called for the professionalization of new product development (NPD). Professionalization of innovation management (as the broader function in which NPD is embedded) was posited to require a combination of scientific knowledge coupled with specific expertise. We revisit that call to (1) assess whether innovation management has established itself as a formal, professional function similar to human resources or marketing, and (2) critically discuss whether (and if so, how) the professionalization of innovation management impacts both academic research and professional practice in the field. We suggest four tests as hallmarks of a profession and apply them to the emerging field of innovation management. Based on our findings, we propose a set of actions for innovation management academics and practitioners. We also recommend directions for future research to promote discussion on this topic within the JPIM community.

Columbus' egg and the engineer's effect in forecasting solutions adoption

Why is it that both complex and simple solutions that have proved to be effective have low rates of adoption? The literature on innovation (i.e., a specific category of solutions) management has provided some clues, identifying barriers of several types: organizational, technological, economic, human behavior and the nature of the innovation. We suggest that one reason is the misalignment between the degrees of complexity i.e., the degree of knowledge embedded, of the problem and its solution. A solution perceived to be too simple for a complex problem falls into the category of what might be called “Columbus' egg”. At the basis of this effect there is the tendency to minimize expected frustration as the difference between the effort made in looking for a solution and the obtained reward. When the solution is too complex for a simple problem, this is the case of the “Engineer's effect”. This effect has its cognitive underpinnings in the tendency to minimize decision-making costs. We discuss and illustrate these phenomena and propose some guidelines for technology developers and product innovation managers, as well as for forecasting solutions adoption.

Innovation, Alliances and Management of Halal Products as Strategies to Increase MSME Competitiveness in the Era of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Purpose – This study discusses the efforts made by MSMEs in the culinary field in the aspects of innovation, alliances and halal products to maintain their business during the pandemic, then these efforts are compiled into MSME recommendations to increase the competitiveness of the New Normal Era. Methodology/approach – This writing uses a descriptive qualitative method using a literature study of Miles Hubermen's data reduction model with trigulation validity. The author conducted semi-structured interviews by determining the object of the interview based on the criteria. Findings – The results of the writing are that the MSMEs in the culinary field that the writer interviewed did product innovation, organizational innovation and marketing innovation, some made alliances and all participants carried out halal product management. Novelty/value – This writing contributes to MSMEs to increase the competitiveness of the New Normal Era and improve knowledge, especially the management of product innovation, organizational innovations, marketing innovations, alliances and halal products

The potential of modular product design on repair behavior and user experience – Evidence from the smartphone industry

Innovation through modular product design is a promising strategy for product lifetime extension and material recyclability. Yet, sustainability benefits of the design do not automatically come into effect, but require additional process innovation through service activities that have to be attractive and made use of by users. This study investigates to what extent sustainability-focused modular product design in the smartphone sector promotes (1) self-repair versus use of repair service and (2) a positive user experience with repair instructions and services. It further analyzes how circular economy attitudes and perceived self-repairability moderate these effects. The quantitative analysis finds that, strengthened by higher perceived self-repairability, users of modular smartphones are more likely to use repair instructions. Also, modular smartphone design increases positive experience with repair instructions. Consequently, successful implementation and management of complementary product and service innovation are key to promoting product lifetime extension in the smartphone industry.

Thirty years of product and brand management research: a retrospective review of the Journal of Product and Brand Management using bibliometric analysis

PurposeThe Journal of Product and Brand Management (JPBM) has a 30-year long history. To commemorate the journal’s 30th anniversary, this research paper aims to present a retrospective overview of JPBM.Design/methodology/approachThis research examines the performance of the research constituents, social structure and intellectual structure of scholarly publications produced by JPBM between 1992 and 2021 using bibliometric analysis.FindingsThis research sheds light on the growing influence of JPBM through four major knowledge clusters (themes): strategic brand management; consumer behavior; product development and innovation management; and brand engagement. A temporal analysis of decade-by-decade cataloguing of the JPBM corpus revealed another set of three distinct knowledge clusters (themes): retailing and pricing strategies; marketing communications; and relationship marketing.Research limitations/implicationsThough the state-of-the-art overview herein offers seminal and useful insights about product and brand management research curated by JPBM, which can be used by the editorial board and prospective authors to curate and position the novelty of future contributions, it remains limited to the accuracy and availability of bibliographic records acquired from Scopus.Originality/valueThis research advances the internal review and subjective evaluation of the evolution of brand management thinking in JPBM by Veloutsou and Guzmán (2017) with an objective retrospection on the performance and scientific evolution of product and brand management research in JPBM.
