An Empirical Analysis of New Product Development Success Among Automotive Industry Vendors in Malaysia

New product development in the automotive industry necessitates significant upfront investment, given the uncertainty of a product's competitiveness upon market launch. Hence, industries strive to comprehend and evaluate crucial success factors during implementation phases. This paper delves into the findings of an empirical qualitative analysis study on the success of New Product Development (NPD) in order to provide deeper insights into these success factors. The study delineates three primary dimensions: IT capability, new product development process, and new product development strategy. Conducted within the Malaysian automotive industry, the empirical results affirm the criticality of these factors to success.

Developing Dry Powder Inhaler Formulations.

This section aims to provide a concise and contemporary technical perspective and reference resource covering dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulations. While DPI products are currently the leading inhaled products in terms of sales value, a number of confounding perspectives are presented to illustrate why they are considered surprisingly, and often frustratingly, poorly understood on a fundamental scientific level, and most challenging to design from first principles. At the core of this issue is the immense complexity of fine cohesive powder systems. This review emphasizes that the difficulty of successful DPI product development should not be underestimated and is best achieved with a well-coordinated team who respect the challenges and who work in parallel on device and formulation and with an appreciation of the handling environment faced by the patient. The general different DPI formulation types, which have evolved to address the challenges of aerosolizing fine cohesive drug-containing particles to create consistent and effective DPI products, are described. This section reviews the range of particle engineering processes that may produce micron-sized drug-containing particles and their subsequent assembly as either carrier-based or carrier-free compositions. The creation of such formulations is then discussed in the context of the material, bulk, interfacial and ultimately drug-delivery properties that are considered to affect formulation performance. A brief conclusion then considers the future DPI product choices, notably the issue of technology versus affordability in the evolving inhaler market.

Pengaruh Rantai Pasok dan Manajemen Persediaan Terhadap Pengembangan Produk

The intense competition in the business world requires companies to innovate their products so that customers do not switch to competitors' products. Product development is a crucial factor that companies must undertake. This research aims to determine the influence of the supply chain and inventory management on product development. The research method used is quantitative research conducted in pharmaceutical companies. Data were obtained by distributing questionnaires to 60 employees of PT. Pharmacy. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26. The research results indicate that the supply chain, together with inventory management, has an impact on product development. This illustrates the crucial role of raw material suppliers and the availability of supporting raw materials in meeting the needs, which will support the success of product development.

The Context Dependency of Lean Product Development Barriers and Success Factors, a Literature Review

There is no consensus in the literature on how to apply Lean Product Development (LPD) successfully. This paper presents a literature review aiming to fill this gap. The key success factors in and barriers to successful implementation of LPD were gathered and categorized by means of a thematic reading. The question of the context’s influence on these factors is also posed, and a proposition is made to prioritize the notion of configurations rather than frameworks. From an academic perspective, this research gives an overview of the LPD implementation’s key factors and opens up a discussion on the pertinence of the notion of framework in this field. On the practitioner side, this paper helps organizations to reflect on the main factors to consider when implementing LPD.

Overview of Post-approval Submissions Management in US, Europe and Canada

In today’s business era & competition in pharmaceutical industries, post-approval evaluation & cGMP compliance plays an important role. Regulatory approval is a critical milestone in the lifecycle of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, ensuring their safety, efficacy, and quality before entering the market. A regulatory affair is a bridge between pharma industry and health authorities.
 Post-Approval function in Regulatory Affairs department plays a major role in supporting continuous commercialization and facilitating for its implementation. This function are responsible to provide strategic regulatory inputs to plant team on their proposals and to facilitate smooth submission followed by acceptance/ approval. In the USA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) governs the regulatory process, employing a thorough and well-defined approach to submission evaluation. Europe, with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) at its helm, utilizes a centralized procedure for marketing authorization, harmonizing regulations across member states. Meanwhile, Health Canada oversees regulatory activities in Canada, emphasizing a risk-based approach to ensure public safety.
 Post-approval submission management is equally vital in maintaining compliance and ensuring ongoing product safety. This paper delves into the strategies and best practices for handling post-approval changes, variations, and renewals. It examines the role of regulatory intelligence, life cycle management, and effective communication with regulatory agencies to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape.
 By comparing and contrasting the regulatory processes in the USA, Europe and Canada, this overview aims to provide valuable insights for pharmaceutical and medical device companies seeking global market access. Understanding the intricacies of regulatory submission and post-approval submission management across these regions is essential for successful product development, commercialisation and long-term regulatory compliance.

Copula‐based Bayesian reliability assessment for series systems

AbstractBayesian reliability assessment plays an integral role in determining the success of product development and deployment into the market, especially when limited information is available to estimate the reliability of products. Nevertheless, the Bayesian reliability approach has untapped research potential when it is used to evaluate systems consisting of dependent components, that is, a situation that reflects real‐world conditions. This study addresses the research gap by applying a copula to encode the dependency structure between the failure rates of the components, particularly for the simple series systems. Unfortunately, this study found that Bayesian aggregation error still occurs when information is used at different levels. By employing Monte Carlo simulation and classification tree learning, this study also investigates the key factors affecting such error over a wide range of possible scenarios and derives useful guidelines for reliability practitioners so that they can choose a more suitable analysis under certain circumstances.

The role of design engineers: Evidence from intra-firm knowledge and collaboration networks.

Successful new product development requires the integration of design and engineering, bridging the gap between technological feasibility and user-centric considerations. However, direct collaboration between designers and engineers with heterogeneous knowledge presents challenges. In this context, the role of design engineers-professionals skilled in both design and engineering-becomes pivotal. This study categorizes inventors into three primary groups: engineers, designers, and design engineers based on the type of patent applications they hold and investigates their differences in knowledge portfolios and collaboration patterns. The study relies on patent data for 4,665 US publicly-traded firms from 1980 to 2015 from the PATSTAT database, and constructs two networks for each firm period: a social network of inventors and a knowledge network of knowledge elements. Findings show that design engineers are highly connected within the social network but have disconnected knowledge in the knowledge network in comparison to engineers. While design engineers may not be the primary drivers of firms' technological innovations, they facilitate interdisciplinary communication and decision-making, fostering a design-technology integrated new product development environment. This research has practical implications for firms seeking to optimize their innovation processes by creating interdisciplinary teams that harness the complementary strengths of engineers and design engineers.

A Framework of Hybrid Method for Developing Optimal Sustainable Product Strategies and Sustainable Product Roadmap

The success of sustainable product strategies is widely recognized as pivotal to the successful development of sustainable products. Despite some existing research on sustainable product strategies, there is a notable lack of investigation into the tools necessary for their effective development. To address this gap, our study aims to (1) introduce a methodological framework that systematically shapes sustainable product strategy, incorporating key technologies like a Sustainable Product Strategies Focus Group (SPSFG), Brainstorming, Weighted Decision Matrix (WDM), and Genetic Algorithm (GA); (2) demonstrate the practical application of this framework through the example of 3C products; and (3) contribute theoretically by proposing a tool for creating sustainable product strategies that integrates management principles, providing a practical guide for the development of control systems and tools. This study also maps out implications for the future of sustainable 3C products. The development of optimal sustainable product strategies across various sectors requires a comprehensive hybrid approach. This method combines diverse methodologies to create a robust framework addressing unique challenges in health systems, education, environment, industry, agriculture, energy, and resource management. Leveraging quantitative analysis, qualitative assessment, and systems thinking, the hybrid approach provides a nuanced understanding of interdependencies within these sectors. Integrating data-driven insights and qualitative considerations facilitates sustainable strategies, optimizing resource utilization for long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits. This holistic methodology enables a more effective response to interconnected challenges in health systems, education, environmental preservation, industry, agriculture, energy, and resource management, promoting a more sustainable future.

Development of new frozen food products: The effects of product attributes and marketing factors on sales of frozen cooked rice and dumplings

AbstractFor successful new product development, it is crucial to devise product attributes and marketing strategies appropriate for the expected consumption contexts. However, the impacts of product attributes and marketing factors on sales across the various consumption contexts are scarcely examined. Thus, this study aims to compare the product attributes and marketing factors affecting the sales of new frozen cooked rice (meal) and frozen dumpling (snack) products, which have different consumption contexts. This study used Nielsen point‐of‐sale data on new frozen cooked rice and dumpling products in Korea for weeks 1–48 in 2020. The results reveal distinct key factors influencing sales for each product category. The key factors driving the sales of frozen cooked rice are formulation, recipe type, package type, weight diversity, and distribution channel diversity. The key factors driving the sales of frozen dumplings are the main ingredient, dumpling shape, sauce flavor, claim, weight diversity, bundling promotion, and distribution channel diversity. These findings contribute to new product development by increasing the understanding of product attributes and marketing factors in different consumption contexts.Practical ApplicationsThis manuscript contributes to the field of food consumer studies by comparing the impact of product attributes and marketing factors on frozen food sales in different consumption contexts, such as meals and snacks. The information obtained from this study provides useful insights for researchers in the sensory and gastronomic fields, as well as for food experts and practitioners. The results of this study can be of interest to the gastronomy sector, as we highlighted sensory factors such as main ingredients, sauce flavors, recipe types, and formulations as product attributes that influence consumers' food purchases. These findings can aid researchers and new product developers in the food industry in developing innovative foods that can potentially be incorporated into the sensory experience.

Development of direct compression Acetazolamide tablet with improved bioavailability in healthy human volunteers enabled by cocrystallization with p-Aminobenzoic acid

Pharmaceutical cocrystallization has been widely used to improve physicochemical properties of APIs. However, developing cocrystal formulation with proven clinical success remains scarce. Successful translation of a cocrystal to suitable dosage forms requires simultaneously improvement of several deficient physicochemical properties over the parent API, without deteriorating other properties critical for successful product development. In the present work, we report the successful development of a direct compression tablet product of acetazolamide (ACZ), using a 1:1 cocrystal of acetazolamide with p-aminobenzoic acid (ACZ-PABA). The ACZ-PABA tablet exhibits superior biopharmaceutical performance against the commercial tablet, DIAMOX® (250 mg), in healthy human volunteers, leading to more than 50 % reduction in the required dose.

SHELF FOR SERVING LINES DEVELOPMENT AND LAUNCHING TO THE MARKET

In today’s market, there is a very intense competition, as well as the unpredictability of customer desires and market trends that change at a rapid speed, resulting in a shorter product life cycle. The purpose of this article is to examine the industry of commercial kitchens and the main aspects could be the key of successfully launching shelf for serving lines to the market. The empirical research background for this study is defined by the performed survey-questionnaire. The results of the survey of enterprises that specialize in manufacturing professional kitchen equipment, as well as the results of the survey of customers who are interested in such products, are presented in this article. The aim of both surveys was to determine which success aspects the company should rely on, and which are the most important for successful product development and market launch. Based on the result of the research and the information which was gathered, a model for the successful development and launch of a shelf for serving lines was developed and proposed. It is a hybrid type model which is based on the principles of Stage-Gate model, Decision process model which was suggested by Kotler and Keller and Agile set of values and principles. It has 7 stages and, stages have 6 gates where the project is assessed every time. This model is a recombinational tool of launching the product to the market which could help to identify the problematic issues within the ongoing process in the company.

Exploratory Analysis of Factors Influencing Agile New Product Development Adoption in Manufacturing Industries

Purpose: Global competition, individualized customer requirements, and volatile market conditions create an environment conducive to agile new product development (ANPD). This research seeks to identify the key factors that influence ANPD adoption along with the development of a conceptual framework for the identified factors. Design/methodology: Through a literature review, eight factors having 47 sub-factors pertinent to ANPD adoption and its performance improvement were identified. Considering all of these factors, the development of conceptual framework and research hypotheses was carried out. A structured questionnaire was used to collect 118 online responses from both domestic and foreign subject matter experts. The structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used for validation of the conceptual framework along with the research hypotheses testing. Findings: This study supported six hypotheses: “Technology management competencies”, “Product development competencies”, “Organizational management competencies”, “Human resource competencies”, “Software management competencies”, and “Policy management competencies”. These supported hypotheses influence ANPD adoption significantly. However, the analysis did not support the two more positive factors, namely “Integrated system competencies” and “Supply chain competencies”, showcasing the necessity for a better understanding of them among the product development experts. Research limitations: As the proposed methodology relies on qualitative data, it is somewhat complex and time-consuming. While SEM can verify the linear relationship, a hybrid approach involving the SEM-MCDM technique can be employed to comprehend the impact of ANPD adoption and performance improvement. Practical implications: The findings of this study will assist product development experts, manufacturing executives, and managers in developing effective ANPD adoption policies. It will help in improving the new product development success rate and highlighting the causes of poor performance. Originality/value: This is a one-of-a-kind and highly beneficial structural modeling-based decision-making tool. This framework can be effective across multiple domains, and incidents of ANPD adoption failure can be mitigated.

Employee Creativity as Moderation between Ambidexterity Organization and Innovation Performance: SMEs in East Kalimantan

Product innovation is a point of interest for consumers to buy products. Organizational ambidexterity is the company's ability to pursue innovation through exploitative and explorative means, thereby influencing employee innovative performance. Technology readiness by organizations and employees is a benchmark for the success of product development. The problem that often occurs is that not all employees are ready for technology and innovation which has an impact on increasing innovation and product performance. Product innovation certainly cannot be separated from employee creativity. Creativity is important in creating competitive advantage and creative industry erformance. The purpose of this research is to investigate the importance of developing organizational ambidexterity and organizational technology readiness as well as employee creativity in improving organizational innovation performance. By doing this, this research tested the moderation of employee creativity (EC) on the relationship between organizational ambidexterity (AO) and innovation performance (IP). By applying a quantitative and cross- sectional design and analyzing the results of a questionnaire on 100 SMEs in East Kalimantan, it was found that AO had a positive and significant effect on IP, while EC had a positive and significant effect on AO but had a negative and insignificant effect on IP. EC moderates and has a positive and significant influence on the relationship between AO and IP as well as AO and IP. This research contributes to the advancement of organizational capability theory by adding the important role of employee creativity in achieving innovation performance.

Navigating new product development: Uncovering factors and overcoming challenges for success

New product development (NPD) frequently encounters failures, whether during the development phase or in the subsequent commercialization stage. These failures can often be attributed to root causes originating in the early stages of NPD, known as the front end. This study aims to investigate the factors that contribute to NPD success and the challenges faced by firms throughout the development process. To achieve this objective, an in-depth qualitative approach utilizing interviews was employed to explore the internal and external factors influencing NPD success. Additionally, the study aims to identify specific challenges encountered by firms during the NPD process. The identification of these factors and challenges are crucial for companies as it can lead to long-term cost savings.The findings of this study have broad implications for firms regardless of their product plans. By adopting the derived approach, companies can effectively navigate the product development process and gain insights into the potential challenges associated with introducing a new product into an existing market. As customer preferences evolve with technological advancements, the barriers and challenges faced by new products entering established markets also increase. Therefore, firms that incorporate the results of this study into their product development practices across various industries can avoid pitfalls and achieve greater efficiency in terms of time and costs. This research sheds light on critical areas that contribute to successful product development and provides valuable guidance for firms striving to excel in their NPD endeavors.

Factors of front-end innovation in fem-tech startups: An empirical study

The nascent fem-tech sector, estimated to reach $103 billion by 2030, represents a transformative intersection of women's health and technology. One of the important players within the ecosystem, fem-tech startups are continuously innovating and trying to sustain themselves. However, the sector is characterized by intense competition and a notably high mortality rate among startups. This study attempts to find what drives front-end innovation in the fem-tech startups. We conducted a national-level survey, capturing the perspectives of diverse fem-tech stakeholders. The collected data was validated using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings underline the central role of entrepreneurial orientation in propelling front-end innovation in fem-tech startups, encompassing dimensions like process, practice, and decision-making activities. Intellectual capital significantly shapes the entrepreneurial trajectory. Establishing symbiotic partnerships and cultivating relationships with key stakeholders are pivotal strategies for fostering human and organizational capital development. These factors collectively form a path model that offers insights into the direction of successful fem-tech product development. The study contributes to the emerging literature on successful health-tech entrepreneurship and also provides practice recommendations to the sectoral stakeholders.

Modeling immunity in microphysiological systems.

There is a need for better predictive models of the human immune system to evaluate safety and efficacy of immunomodulatory drugs and biologics for successful product development and regulatory approvals. Current in vitro models, which are often tested in two-dimensional (2D) tissue culture polystyrene, and preclinical animal models fail to fully recapitulate the function and physiology of the human immune system. Microphysiological systems (MPSs) that can model key microenvironment cues of the human immune system, as well as of specific organs and tissues, may be able to recapitulate specific features of the in vivo inflammatory response. This minireview provides an overview of MPS for modeling lymphatic tissues, immunity at tissue interfaces, inflammatory diseases, and the inflammatory tumor microenvironment in vitro and ex vivo. Broadly, these systems have utility in modeling how certain immunotherapies function in vivo, how dysfunctional immune responses can propagate diseases, and how our immune system can combat pathogens.

Decision support in engineering design: the ELIGERE open source software platform

In engineering design, the selection of the optimal design solution represents a critical phase for the development of successful products. In this paper, we present ELIGERE, an open source decision support system targeted at engineering design applications. It allows to rank multiple design solutions with respect to different evaluation criteria according to the evaluations provided by a group of experts. ELIGERE is composed by three main modules: (1) a distributed web application, for generation and participation to the decision making session; (2) a mathematical engine, based on the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process, to quantify the results of the decision making session according to the evaluation of the experts; (3) a relational database, to collect and store data. The most important contribution of this paper is introducing a practical and effective software tool that facilitates decision-making analysis based on the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process, thereby allowing better-informed choices on concept selection, as it has been designed with a specific focus on the engineering field. In this paper we describe the key concepts of ELIGERE and its modalities of use in several real use cases. Finally, we compare ELIGERE with the widely used general purpose decision support software based on the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process.

An effective framework to improve the managerial activities in global software development

Abstract Global Software Development (GSD) is a contemporary approach to software development that offers numerous advantages, including enhanced cost-effectiveness and timely delivery. It enables access to a vast pool of skilled developers and facilitates the exchange of best practices and innovative ideas within the software industry. However, effective project management plays a vital role in ensuring successful product development. Organizations that achieve project success consistently adhere to well-defined project management methodologies, resulting in desired outcomes within predefined time frames and allocated resources. The success rate of software projects significantly increases with diligent software management efforts. Nevertheless, the distributed nature of GSD presents significant challenges related to collaboration, information dissemination, and process control, which ultimately impede effective development and compromise software quality. In this study, we identify various challenges associated with the GSD process and propose strategies to overcome obstacles to effective project management. Additionally, we introduce a comprehensive framework designed to enhance managerial activities in GSD.

Cheese Fermented with Human-Derived Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 and Mushroom Powders: A Novel Psychobiotic Food with Enhanced Bioactivity and Sensory Acceptability

Fermented foods containing psychobiotics are of growing interest among food scientists. Human-derived Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, a gut symbiont and potential psychobiotic strain, has been shown to exhibit the following health benefits: anti-inflammation and GABA-production capacity, as well as modulation of pathogen and cancer cell growth. The aim of this research was to develop an acid-coagulated fresh soft quark-type cheese, fermented with L. reuteri DSM 17938, with enhanced bioactivity, sensory acceptability, and overall likeability. Psychobiotic-containing cheeses represent the food of a new generation, so it is of great importance to gain the trust of the consumers. To develop a familiar taste, cheese samples were enriched with mushroom powders of Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus. A high abundance of lactic acid bacteria was maintained in all cheese samples (>log 7.64 CFU/mL), while cheese extracts exhibited cytotoxicity to colon cancer cell line HCT116 (up to 30.96%) in vitro. Additionally, cheese samples provided a favorable medium for the growth of the probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (>log 7.11 CFU/mL). Sensory evaluation revealed high scores for all samples (up to 97.21% of maximum overall quality). The survey conducted in this study offered insights into consumer willingness to try products containing psychobiotics. This study demonstrates the potential for the successful development of fermented food products with L. reuteri DSM 17938, which exhibits all the desired traits that consumers may receive well. Further research is required to explore the potential health benefits of these innovative food products.
