The Relationship between the Subjective Feeling of Loneliness and Victim Behavior in Adolescence

The article examines the teenage period of development with its age-related crises and characteristics. Specific problems of adolescence are identified: the problem of loneliness and victimized behavior. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between the subjective feeling of loneliness and victim behavior in adolescence. The phenomenon of loneliness is characterized as a multifaceted complex construct, and the features of the experience of loneliness in adolescence are revealed. Analyzing the connection between the types of experiences of loneliness and personal characteristics and behavioral manifestations in adolescence. Particular attention is paid to victim behavior. To confirm the hypothesis about the relationship between the subjective feeling of loneliness and victim behavior in adolescence, an empirical study was conducted in which 40 adolescents aged 15–16 years, 8th–9th grade students, took part. The results of the study confirm that the phenomena of propensity to victimized behavior and loneliness in adolescence are interrelated.

LONELINESS FROM THE ADOLESCENTS PERSPECTIVE: METHODS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT

The problem of adolescents’ loneliness is constantly of concern to all mankind in the society, so the problem of loneliness in society (or the desire to be alone) became one of not decided yet problems of many sciences, including pedagogy and psychology. The last years this issue is devoted to new works on the study of the state and characteristic manifestations of adolescents who have experienced a state of loneliness. The relevance of the article is concluded in practical importance for studying the state of loneliness of adolescents, since the experience of this study affects the formation and adaptation of the personality in society. The proposed article deals with the issues of psychological support of adolescents who have experienced a state of loneliness, reveals the essence and content of the concept of "loneliness" in adolescence, shows ways to provide psychological support to adolescents who have experienced a state of loneliness.

Inside and Outside the Film Genre: Old Age on the Way

This paper analyses Croatian film Night boats (2012), directed by Igor Mirković, from the anthropology of film and anthropology of age point of view. The film story is analyzed as the so-called diegetic universe, i.e. as an ethnography of the film, and is connected to the real experiences of the elderly. The plot of the film follows the meeting and emotional bonding of Helena and Jakov in one of Zagreb's nursing homes. Shortly after their brief acquaintance, these "seventy-year-old teenagers" begin a romance, run away from home and embark on a road adventure. In terms of genre, this film can be viewed as a road movie since, in addition to the fact that the main characters spend more than half of the plot on the road, the film thematically and visually follows the conventions of the aforementioned genre. Their road adventure is initiated on a metaphorical level, as an escape from illness and death, as well as an escape from loneliness and the circumstances that life in old age brings. The main characters flee from the lack of choice they are faced with which is why their journey can be interpreted as a search for lost, almost stripped identities. The journey of Helena and Jacob, two elderly individuals faced with the problems of loneliness and physical decline, represents a transformative experience for the main characters and signifies a form of quiet rebellion, a refusal to accept cultural conventions according to which active life ends with a socially constructed notion of old age. In this sense, this film story served to critically address various issues and problems concerning society’s stereotypical attitudes towards the elderly.

Dementia and the problem of loneliness: how faith communities can help

ABSTRACT Considerable recent research has focused on loneliness and its effects on mental and physical health at all ages. This paper addresses loneliness among people living with dementia and those who love and care for them. By adopting a new culture of congregational care and becoming “dementia friendly”, faith communities can help to overcome the dementia stigma that often results in loss of relationships and increases in loneliness. Examples of obstacles to such care are offered along with descriptions of model programs in dementia-friendly faith communities.

EXPLORAREA DIMENSIUNII SINGURĂTĂȚII ÎN RÂNDUL PERSOANELOR VÂRSTNICE: ANALIZA UNOR FACTORI SOCIO-DEMOGRAFICI ȘI PSIHOLOGICI

The problem of loneliness among the elderly has a negative impact on their quality of life and well-being. The aim of the study is to explore theoretically and applied the influence of socio-demographic factors and quality of life on loneliness in the elderly, highlighting the complex interactions between these determinants. The following dimensions were evaluated: a) the residential context - institutionalized versus family; b) gender; c) state of health; d) marital status; e) professional sector; f) level of education; g) degree of personal satisfaction; h) the quality of life associated with old age and i) the intensity of feelings of loneliness among the elderly. The research sample consists of 200 people aged between 65–95 years (m=71.89): 100 institutionalized respondents and 100 non-institutionalized respondents. The data were collected by applying two instruments: the UCLA Loneliness Scale, developed by Russell in 1996, and the Quality of Life Inventory (QOLI), designed by Frisch in 1992 (Russell, 1996; Frisch, 1992). Data analysis reveals a significant correlation between socio-demographic factors (sex, age, marital status, level of education) and the perceived intensity of loneliness, as well as statistically significant and negative correlations between loneliness and all assessed areas of quality of life.

The problem of loneliness and stress coping styles among war refugees in the context of their life experience (based on a study conducted in Drohobych)

This article presents the findings of an empirical study of the feeling of loneliness experienced by war refugees relocated to Drohobych, and the stress coping styles they use. The study included a theoretical analysis of available materials on the issue of loneliness and stress coping styles. The conducted analysis has shown that the problem of loneliness is widely described and interpreted from different aspects in literature on psychology. According to the sources, the problem is complex and there is no unambiguous solution to it. The phenomenon of loneliness is examined from the standpoint of numerous conceptual approaches. However, there is rather little research into the subject of loneliness experienced by war refugees in Ukraine and its connection with the stress coping styles they use. The aim of the study was to identify the specific manifestations of loneliness, in particular its three aspects: the social, emotional, and existential ones, and also its relationship with the stress coping styles used by forced migrants living in the territory of Drohobych and the Drohobych district. The above phenomena were analysed using the following psychodiagnostic tools: a short scale for measuring loneliness (SBS-AD), developed by Z. Dołęga; the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), developed by N. S. Endler and J. D. A. Parker, in the Polish adaptation of P. Shchepanik, Ya. Strelau, and K. Wrzeshnevsky (P. Szczepanik, J. Strelau, K. Wrześniewski); an original questionnaire, specifically developed for the needs of the research. The findings of the study of the theoretical and methodological aspects of the issue and the conducted empirical research have confirmed the hypothesis that loneliness experienced by war refugees has an existential face and is related to their stress coping styles. It has been found that the task-oriented style dominates among war refugees. The research has shown that the problem of loneliness and the related stress coping styles requires further study, while the research findings should be implemented in the provision of psychological help to war refugees.

The problem of loneliness and styles of coping with stress in the context of experienced life situations among war refugees based on the example of research conducted in Kraków

This article presents research conducted among individuals from Ukraine who arrived in Krakow after 24.02.2024, i.e. after the armed attack of Russia on Ukraine. The first part introduces theoretical considerations regarding the phenomenon of loneliness. The second part is filled with research, for which the shortened Loneliness Scale (SBS-AD) developed by Z. Dołęga, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) developed by N.S. Endler, the Polish adaptation of Parker’s J.D.A. by P. Szczepanik, J. Strelau, K. Wrześniewski, and a self-constructed questionnaire for acquiring significant socio-demographic data were used.

Migration and language are closely interrelated fields that have not been sufficiently investigated. In particular, the state of speechlessness caused by migration has so far received little philosophical attention. Hence, this article explores speechlessness due to migration based on a dialectical human existence (Dasein). The condition of loss of language is philosophically significant because it shows who we are and who we can become through migration. It also unveils the individual and his or her development, as well as the condition of the receiving societies. The loss of language is the seismograph of human existence.

The HEXACO model of personality is associated with loneliness in a university setting

The problem of loneliness among college students has attracted extensive attention from researchers. As a fundamental psychological framework, personality traits are associated with loneliness. Thus, we conducted a survey of 688 college students in Mainland China to examine the relationship between the HEXACO personality traits and loneliness. Regression analysis revealed a negative association between loneliness and the personality traits of agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience, and a positive association between loneliness and the personality traits of honesty???humility, emotionality, and extraversion. This model explained 33.78% of the variance in loneliness. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Relevance. In modern society, loneliness is facing society as one of the urgent problems. This is not just a complex phenomenon in the life of an individual, it also has a huge social significance that requires in-depth analysis by sociology and philosophy. The development of high technologies and artificial intelligence has made people more isolated from each other, and often virtual communication completely replaces interpersonal communication in real life. This leads to the emergence of the problem of virtual communication, which, in turn, has an ambiguous effect on the problems of loneliness in each individual. The purpose is the study of the phenomenon of loneliness in the transforming social conditions of modern society. Objectives: To determine the essence of loneliness in modern society; to determine the types of loneliness and the social conditions of their formation in modern society; to analyze the social factors of loneliness in the modern world. Methodology. . The research was conducted on the basis of a systematic approach within the framework of structural functionalism using universal scientific methods such as analysis, synthesis and generalization. Results. The main results are presented as follows: within the framework of this article, a study was conducted with the help of which we typologized the types of loneliness and characterized the main causes of loneliness. Conclusions. Using a sociological survey, we determined that the main socio-demographic factors influencing feelings are age, level of education and population density. Also, urbanization and dependence on social networks have a strong impact on loneliness.

The article characterizes the types of communication, highlights the theories of interaction in the virtual envi-ronment, digitalization, presents the term “digital crowd”, studies the new phenomenon of “digital sublimation of individuality”, gives recommendations on overcoming loneliness in the modern digital world and decision-making in all spheres of society by the individual himself. In this study, the method of qualitative analysis is used. The aim of the work is to identify the social implications of digitalization and ways of addressing social problems. Human individuality in the digital society forms the subject of the study. Conclusion dwells upon the fact that the problem of loneliness, self-loss in the digital crowd and the phenomenon of individuality digital sublimation are complex and are caused by a variety of reasons, ranging from the imposition of certain stand-ards and values in the virtual world to the psychological characteristics of a particular individual.

Technology and older adults in British loneliness policy and political discourse.

This article provides an analysis of recent loneliness policy and political discourses from the United Kingdom pertaining to older adults. Although government asserts that several groups in society are "at risk" of loneliness, older adults remain the most frequent targets of policy interventions. Technology is positioned as playing a role in the causation and alleviation of loneliness. Little research has examined loneliness in political discourses. With a focus on how loneliness intersects with themes of technology and aging, this article presents an analysis of discourses guided by Bacchi's What is the Problem Represented to Be (WPR) framework. It endeavors to answer the following questions: What is the problem of loneliness among older adults represented to be, and what is the role of technology in this context - problem or solution? In the discourses, assertions are made that issues of loneliness, societal change and digital exclusion are intertwined. Lonely older adults are problematized as hard to find and thus connect with interventions, warranting surveillance measures like loneliness heatmaps. Technological interventions to assist older adults in maintaining independence and connections to social networks are often proposed as solutions. The findings indicate dominant discourses position older adults primarily as subjects in need of care and as non-users of technology. Technology is positioned as a cost-effective tool to fill gaps in an overburdened and under-funded social care system that compounds issues of loneliness. The author argues the neoliberal and stigmatizing undertones within the corpus may undermine efforts to combat loneliness. Further, austerity is silent in the dominant problematizations of loneliness, foreclosing upon alternatives that problematize loneliness as resulting from neoliberal policies that continue to dismantle public infrastructure and social care.

The problem of loneliness in the urban environment: experience of cities in Russian Far East

The article deals with the phenomenon of human loneliness in the city. The ever-increasing role of the city as a living space causes changes both in the way of life of a person and in his inner world. Loneliness, being at all times an immanent companion of being, is also distinguished by specific features in modern social realities. Their formation was influenced by dynamic social factors and agents. The purpose of the article is to outline the social contour of urban loneliness by analysing relevant theoretical, methodological and empirical data.
 The methodology for researching the issue was determined by the urban discourse in sociology (G.Simmel, R.Park, A.Lefebvre); social concepts of loneliness (N.Pokrovsky, Zh.Puzanova, E.Klinenberg); the concept of a modern complex society (Z.Bauman, S.Kravchenko), as well as elements of the socio-spatial approach. The empirical basis of the research is represented by a series of semi-formalised focused interviews with respondents - residents of large cities of the Far Eastern Federal District of the Russian Federation using the narrative principle of data processing, as well as elements of content analysis.
 The results of the study are presented by empirically identified narratives of loneliness, the interpretation of their social context. The grounds for the analysis of loneliness as a phenomenon receiving additional development in the conditions of multidirectional and non-linear processes of urban life are noted. A factor social role in this process is played by the diversity and differentiation of public life, social anomie and individualisation of life practices, the crisis of the institution of trust as a value of collective interactions, and the ongoing “atomisation” of households. Also of major importance are the fundamental shifts in the mass consciousness, that led to the perception of a voluntary solitary lifestyle as beneficial and valuable. The social contours of loneliness are affiliated with the intensity of the urban lifestyle, individualism, and uncertainty about the future.
 The author formulates a conclusion about the low level of social capital of respondents as one of the significant factors of loneliness, as well as about the resource nature of the city in the development of loneliness as a personal experience, and in the practice of a lonely lifestyle.

In the circle of loneliness and addiction – based on an example of alcoholism

Alcoholism is a chronic, incurable disease. Its essence is the psychophysical dependenceon the psychoactive substance constituted by alcohol. This article discusses the problemof loneliness experienced by young adults diagnosed with alcoholism. The aim of thestudy was to estimate the levels of global loneliness as well as emotional, psychologicaland existential loneliness in a group of young adults struggling with alcohol dependence,and the subject of the study was to carry out an analysis of the phenomenonof loneliness in a group of young adults (men and women) who are addicted to alcohol.

The article discusses the features of social services for the elderly in modern Russian society. In order to improve and maintain their health, activity, support, and in the absence of decent living conditions, older people can stay in stationary or semi-residential institutions that provide a full range of social services, and can also receive home care, remaining in their usual home conditions. . However, due to their difficult financial situation, many elderly citizens are not always able to pay for social services. Also, the lack of places in specialized institutions, limited funding, overcrowding of nursing homes and boarding schools necessitates the search for alternative and innovative forms of social services for the elderly and disabled. As a special and effective form of life arrangement for the elderly and disabled, their placement in a foster family is considered, by providing family support and creating full-fledged social and living conditions. The foster or substitute family model has been developed in a number of European countries and the USA. The introduction in Russia of an alternative model of a foster family for the elderly and disabled will help solve their pressing problems, as well as provide them with constant care and concern. A foster family for an elderly person is a good opportunity in the future to abandon the activities of nursing homes, in many of which the elderly live out their lives, in the truest sense of the word. This technology provides an elderly person with the necessary care and living conditions, leisure activities, psychological support, and additional material support for a foster family. The development of the institution of a foster family for the elderly as an innovative form of their life arrangement will significantly improve the quality of life of older citizens, change their “social well-being”, save them from the problem of loneliness, and strengthen the connection between generations. Solving social, social, psychological and other problems of older people requires more active participation of civil society and society, a constant search for effective forms of social services.

Социальная автономия в тувинском этносе (экспериментальный подход социальной оценки малых сообществ)

In the work on the Tuvan material, the problem of loneliness is considered. The purpose of the study is to identify the social aspects of social autonomy. The study sets the task of determining the social prerequisites for social autonomy in the context of the role of the family as a small social group and its social function in the formation of the social inclusion of the individual with the subsequent formation of their own social relationships, family guidelines and family constructs. The research task is to determine the specifics, degree and nature of the manifestation of social autonomy in the context of the Tuvan ethnos as an example of a national community that has its own social history, specific traditional values, special national cults of the family, children, specific understanding of the social roles of family members. As a result of the data obtained, statistical estimates were made of the dependence of the main variables that contribute to loneliness or vice versa – reduce its risks. When studying the correlation estimates of the causes of loneliness in the choice of respondents and their answers to the question about the closest social circle, it can be seen that in the absence of their own family, respondents often see the causes of loneliness in the absence of a favorite thing or in the person himself, while the presence of a family forms for the respondents the sphere of employment and encourages them to be as involved as possible in the issues of family and children, thereby leveling all possible causes of feeling of loneliness. The study allows us to draw a conclusion about the importance of one's own family and children in the Tuvan ethnic group. The presence of a generic, cultural, historical understanding of the family, children in the lives of the respondents reflects the social orientation and social focus on the presence of this particular social field as defining for the majority of the respondents.

Being one of the important issues of philosophy, the phenomenon of loneliness is in the attention of some other sciences, such as psychology, pedagogy, linguistics, sociology, cultural and religion studies. The problem of loneliness becomes the most relevant and acute in the context of the modern lifestyle. Understanding the phenomenon of loneliness leads to an understanding of the essence of man, but the problem of loneliness is ambiguous. The main research methods are description, classification, systematization and comparison of research data based on cultural, anthropological, hermeneutic, cognitive analysis, synthesis and generalization of domestic and foreign sources. Phenomenology and existentialism have been developed and systematized in the philosophical consideration of loneliness. Phenomenology considered loneliness from the point of view of intersubjectivity, i.e., the possibility or impossibility of a person’s epistemological connection with other people, the recognition of their common being, and the loneliness of the “I”. In existentialism, loneliness became the principle of a closed anthropological universe, and internal isolation became the basis of individual existence. However, the existing socio-philosophical approaches and directions related to loneliness are considered insufficiently developed, since these approaches are not enough to reveal its subtleties. As a result of studying loneliness as a philosophical problem, it was determined that it is common to all people, but has different characteristics for each person. In world philosophy, there are conflicting views on the problem of loneliness, which has become a common phenomenon in our society since ancient times: 1) loneliness was considered a positive initiative from the point of view of intellectual loneliness, which was allowed in ancient society; 2) loneliness was seen as a multifaceted, insidious disease among social diseases, multifaceted, insidious, dangerous to health, against happiness, having negative qualities, causing discontent. Thus, intellectual seclusion was allowed in ancient society, and served the sages and philosophers.

THE PROBLEM OF LONELINESS IN MODERN SOCIETY: A SOCIOLOGICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS

Among increasingly important social phenomena of a modern world is the problem of loneliness becoming more common among people of all ages due to various cognitive, behavioral, and social factors. People have been worried about the problem of loneliness throughout the history of mankind. This study is devoted to investigation of the phenomenon of loneliness from the perspectives of sociology and philosophy. The goal of research is to explore how relevant the problem of loneliness is in modern society. The descriptive study of loneliness based on the review of scientific literature used the methods of analysis and synthesis of the collected research data, thematic analysis, comparative analysis and data systematization. The research results demonstrated that loneliness is a universal phenomenon, caused by various factors, and leading to health risks, cognitive and behavioral disorders. The recommendations for overcoming loneliness were presented.

Panacea or poison? Exploring the paradoxical problematizations of loneliness, technology and youth in Norwegian and UK policymaking

PurposeLoneliness’ impact on health and wellbeing has emerged as a public health issue in several countries. Young people are increasingly understood as a ‘risk group’ and intervention target for loneliness-reduction. This research paper aims to present a discourse analysis of policies and political speech about young people and loneliness.Design/methodology/approachUsing discourse analysis inspired by Carol Bacchi’s “What is the Problem Represented to Be” (WPR) approach, this cross-cultural analysis studies loneliness policy in the United Kingdom (UK) and Norway. In doing so, the authors ask: What is the problem of loneliness among young people represented to be in UK and Norwegian welfare policy?FindingsThe findings indicate paradoxical problematizations of the role technology plays among lonely young people, who, in this context, are divided in two categories: able normative and disabled youth. We reveal fundamental differences in beliefs about the impact of technology on these groups, and corresponding differences in the proposed solutions. The problem of young peoples’ loneliness is represented as uncertainty about potential harms of digital connectedness and reduced face-to-face interactions. In contrast, the problem of loneliness among disabled youth is represented as impeded access to social realms, with technology serving a benign role as equalizer.Originality/valueLittle research has examined this new policy field. The article contributes to filling this gap and encourages policymakers to consider how political discourses on loneliness may lead them to overlook digital interventions young people could find beneficial.
