Abstract: Data Commons Platforms are emerging as transformative tools in the landscape of medical research, offering a centralized, accessible, and scalable infrastructure for managing, analyzing, and sharing vast amounts of biomedical data. This article provides a comprehensive examination of these platforms, exploring their core functionalities, benefits, and challenges in the context of advancing medical discovery. We discuss how Data Commons Platforms accelerate research by facilitating datadriven hypothesis generation, enhancing collaboration among researchers, improving data accessibility, and ensuring data interoperability. The article also presents a reference architecture for these platforms, detailing the key components that enable their powerful capabilities.
