Environmental controls on organic matter enrichment of the lower Cambrian source rocks in the Tarim Basin, Northwest China

In the Tarim Basin, the largest petroliferous basin in China, a set of organic-rich deposition hosted in the lower Cambrian Yuertusi Formation is considered to be the main hydrocarbon source rocks. However, the limited and scattered distribution of the lower Cambrian constrains present studies mostly on some certain sections where samples are accessible, inhibiting a systematic understanding of characteristics of these source rocks and controls on organic matter enrichment. Here, we conduct a systematic study on a drillcore in northwestern margin of the Tarim Basin (Taxibei), integrated with previously published data from other available sections. These data show the Yuertusi Formation was mainly composed of mudstone/shale, carbonate and siliceous rocks, and distributed dominantly in the Taxibei, northern (Tabei) and eastern-northeastern areas of the Tarim Basin (Tadong-Tadongbei) with an increased thickness (mean 30 m to mean 60 m) towards the Tadong-Tadongbei areas. High total organic carbon (TOC) contents (up to 30%) were found in the mudstone/shale dominated intervals in both the Taxibei and Tabei areas, characterized by I-II kerogen and highly to over-matured thermal maturity. Paleo-redox reconstruction based on high V/(V + Ni) ratios (>0.6) and FeHR/FeT ratios (>0.38) suggests anoxic watermass conditions occurred during the deposition of the organic-rich intervals along with moderate sedimentation rate, providing consistently good preservation for organic matter accumulation. Based on a combined analysis, we infer primary productivity in surface waters exerted a key control on TOC contents of the organic-rich intervals, which was driven by nutrient supplies from hydrothermal activities with partial upwelling effects in the Taxibei area, and from upwelling waters in the Tabei area.

Geochemical and radiogenic isotope records of the Weissert Event in south Tethyan sediments

The Cretaceous marine sedimentary record is characterized by time intervals rich in organic matter correlating with positive carbon isotope excursions, often called oceanic anoxic events. The Weissert Event corresponds to the first such event in the Cretaceous during the Valanginian stage. The associated palaeoenvironmental perturbations, which include increasing marine surface water primary productivity, are hypothesized to have been triggered by volcanic activity from large igneous provinces, and the source of nutrients is not well constrained (continental runoff v. oceanic upwelling). We present isotope ratios of Pb, Sr and Nd, together with concentrations of major and trace elements, for sediments from the central Moroccan margin to test these hypotheses. We demonstrate that the nutrient input was dominated by continental weathering. The source of sedimentary material remained stable during the Valanginian interval and originated from an old source, probably the African Sahara region. The radiogenic isotope signatures do not show a significant contribution of volcanic products from any known Valanginian large igneous province to the geochemical budget of sediments deposited on the central Moroccan margin. Although this does not preclude an impact of volcanic activity on the composition of seawater, it demonstrates that the erupted volumes were not sufficient to affect the deposited sediments. Controls on Organic Matter Accumulation from an Upper Slope Section on the Early Cambrian Yangtze Platform, South China

The early Cambrian witnessed profound environmental changes and biological evolution in Earth’ history. During this period, organic-rich shales were widely distributed over almost the entire Yangtze Block. However, the dominant factor that drove the significant accumulation of organic matter (OM) remains controversial and is still debated. Here, we analyzed TOC, organic carbon isotopes, iron speciation, major and trace elements for the lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation in the upper slope Meiziwan section, to investigate the dominant factor controlling OM accumulation. High contents of TOC and Baxs reveal an OM-enriched feature of the Niutitang Formation, and the coupled relationship between them suggest a strong production control on OM accumulation at Meiziwan. Meanwhile, negative relationships between TOC and chemical index of alteration (CIA) values as well as Al contents suggest that influence of chemical weathering and terrestrial input on OM accumulation were limited. Fairly low CoEF × MnEF values provide strong evidence that the deposition of organic-rich shales was under the control of oceanic upwelling event. The upwelling event would bring nutrient-rich deep waters into surface water, stimulating phytoplankton bloom and primary productivity in surface water and facilitating OM enrichment. Meanwhile, enhanced accumulation of OM would have promoted subsequent bacterial sulfate reduction, leading to the occurrence of occasional euxinia (evidenced by iron speciation and redox-sensitive trace element data) and promoting preservation of OM. Taken together, our results shed light on the critical role of oceanic upwelling on the marine primary productivity on the earliest Cambrian Yangtze Platform.

High productivity promoted exceptional fossil preservation of the early Middle Triassic Luoping biota of Yunnan Province, China

The early Middle Triassic (Anisian) Luoping biota is representative of marine ecosystems following their full recovery after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction; however, its exceptional preservation remains poorly understood. In this paper, we report multiple geochemical proxies (TOC, TN, P/Al, Cuxs, Nixs, Baxs, δ13Ccarb, and δ13Corg) from Member II of the Middle Triassic Guanling Formation at the Xiangdongpo section in Luoping County, Yunnan Province, China, to assess the relationship between primary productivity and exceptional preservation of the Luoping biota. Variations in TOC, TN, P/Al, Cuxs, and Nixs values show that exceptional preservation coincides with two intervals of high productivity. Relatively low C/N ratios and distributed Δ13Ccarb-org values indicate that primary productivity was dominated by eukaryotic algae and prokaryotic microbes. Based on geochemical analyses and regional correlations, we conclude that, following sea level rise, nutrients were supplied to the Luoping area by upwelling from the open ocean and facilitated the blooming of marine communities in an open platform setting. In the intra-platform depression, increased nutrients supply also fueled high primary productivity in surface waters and oxygen consumption in the water column, causing bottom water anoxia. The lack of oxygen in the bottom water reduced the rate of biomass degradation and bioturbation, promoting growth of microbial mats, leading to the exceptional preservation of macrofauna. This study highlights the important role of elevated primary productivity in exceptional fossil preservation by triggering anoxia of bottom waters. Our findings confirm the widespread development of anoxic conditions during the middle Anisian (Pelsonian), from the eastern Tethys to the Panthalassa, and also reveal the interactions between organisms and the environment after Permian-Triassic mass extinction.

Macrobenthic diversity response to the atlantification of the Arctic Ocean (Fram Strait, 79°N) – A taxonomic and functional trait approach

This is the first study presenting temporal changes of the macrofauna biodiversity along the bathymetric gradient from the shelf to abyssal depths in the eastern Fram Striat. In this region, between 2004 and 2008, a significant increase in surface water temperature was observed due to the transport of Atlantic water from lower latitudes and was defined as a Warm Water Anomaly (WWA). Effects of the WWA in the eastern Fram Strait were observed across the entire food web, from the pelagic to the deep seafloor. The material for our study was collected before (in 2000) and after the WWA (in 2010 and 2017) at station depths ranging from 203 m to 5561 m. Samples of macrofauna and surface sediments were collected with use of a box corer to analyze species composition and functional traits, and environmental characteristics in sediments. We explore the influence of environmental changes on the structure (species composition and diversity) and functioning (functional trait composition and diversity) of macrofauna communities. An increase of primary production in surface waters during and after the WWA was reflected in a higher food availability at the seafloor from shelf to abyssal depths. Warming induced environmental changes led to an increase of macrofauna density and taxonomic diversity at all water depths. Macrofauna species composition significantly changed after the WWA. At all study sites, macrofauna functional diversity increased after the warm period. Functional trait composition changed significantly along the bathymetric transect. Despite changes in the taxonomic composition, macrofauna communities at the shallowest stations showed high functional redundancy, i.e., trait composition remained unchanged after the WWA. At water depths below 1500 m, where functional redundancy was significantly lower, functional trait composition changed significantly after the WWA. Our results suggest that macrofauna communities on the shelves are more resistant to environmental changes compared to deep-sea assemblages in the eastern Fram Strait.

Chemosynthetic and photosynthetic trophic support from cold seeps in Arctic benthic communities

Benthic communities below the photic zone are largely reliant on the export of surface-water primary production and the flux of partially degraded organic matter to the seabed, i.e. pelagic−benthic coupling. Over the past decades, however, the role of chemosynthetically produced carbon in food webs has been recognized in various habitats. Cold seeps are now known to be widespread across circumpolar Arctic shelves where natural release of hydrocarbons occurs at the seabed. Here, we investigated to what extent chemosynthesis-based carbon (CBC) enters the food web in a high latitude shelf-system. Specifically, we estimated the contributions of chemosynthesis-based carbon to primarily benthic invertebrate taxa from seeps at both shallow and deeper shelves and comparative non-seep areas in the Svalbard-Barents Sea region using bulk stable isotope-analysis of carbon and nitrogen. Our results show low δ13C values (-51.3 to -32.7 ‰) in chemosymbiotic siboglinids and several species of benthic, higher-trophic level, invertebrates (mainly polychaetes and echinoderms; -35.0 to -26.1‰) collected at cold seeps, consistent with assimilation of chemosynthesis-based carbon into the Arctic benthic food web. Using a two-component mixing equation, we demonstrate that certain species could derive more than 50% of their carbon from chemosynthesis-based carbon. These findings show that autochthonous chemosynthetic energy sources can contribute to supporting distinct groups of ‘background’ benthic taxa at these Arctic seep-habitats beyond microbial associations and chemosymbiotic species. Furthermore, we found a higher degree of chemosynthesis-based carbon in benthos at the deeper Barents Sea shelf seeps (>330 m) compared to seeps at the Western Svalbard shelf (<150 m water-depth), and we suggest this result reflects the differences in depth range, surface production and pelagic-benthic coupling. We detected large intra-species variations in carbon signatures within and across geographical locations and, combined with isotopic niche-analysis, our results show that certain taxa that inhabits seeps, have wider trophic niches in comparison to taxa inhabiting non-seeps. The increasing number of discovered natural seeps in the Arctic suggests that chemosynthetic production from seeps could play a more critical role in Arctic trophic structure than previously thought. Seep-derived carbon should, hence, be accounted for as an additional carbon source and included in food-web and energy-flow models in future work.

Sequence stratigraphy and paleoenvironmental significance of the Neoproterozoic Bambui Group, Central Brazil

The Bambui Group is a ca. 2,000 m-thick mixed biochemical-siliciclastic sedimentary succession that accumulated in the Sao Francisco Basin, central Brazil. Its age is contentious, but deposition during the Cryogenian-Ediacaran (ca. 635–550 Ma) is consistent with a new sequence stratigraphic model presented herein and previously published geochemical and structural data. Six stratigraphic sequences are recognized that record depositional evolution from an epeiric sea to foreland basin during the Marinoan snowball glaciation (ca. 635 Ma) to shortly after the Gaskiers (ca. 580 Ma) glaciation. Although this stratigraphic architecture differs from the classic lithostratigraphic and more recent chemostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic interpretations of the Bambui Group, it is supported by correlation to other Cryogenian-Ediacaran successions globally. Collectively, these six sequences preserve a robust record of seawater redox structure leading up to the oxygenation threshold that triggered the evolution of multicellular animals in the Ediacaran.Sequence 1 is composed of Marinoan glacial deposits and an overlying cap carbonate with aragonite fan pseudomorphs and barite. Sequence 2 is composed of lime-mudstone that changes laterally into loess-rich peritidal phosphorites, suggesting oxygen stratification in shallow paleoenvironments. Sequence 3 is a carbonate succession with abundant stromatolites implying widespread oxygen production. The top of Sequence 3 is marked by a regional subaerial unconformity developed during uplift associated with the onset of the Brasiliano-Pan African Orogeny. Sequence 4 signals a return to loess derived sedimentation. Distal deposits contain abundant organic matter with framboidal pyrite reflecting bacterial sulfate reduction in low sulfate Ediacaran seawater. Sequence 5 is composed of well-developed aggradational parasequences composed of alternating deep subtidal organic-rich siltstones and shallow-water carbonate grainstones. Their well-defined cyclicity is interpreted to record extreme sea level fluctuations during the onset of the Gaskiers glaciation. Stromatolites suggest an oxygen-stratified water column. Sequence 6 marks the change from an epeiric sea to a foreland basin. Interbedded basinal glauconitic siltstone and shale loess-rich are correlative with shoreface sandstones. Authigenic glauconite requires suboxic bottom waters to precipitate and thus reflects oxygenation of distal settings. Most of the deposition ended by ca. 560–550 Ma when the entire Bambui Group was deformed during the assembly of West Gondwana.In sequences 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and the lower portion of 6, the lateral continuity of lithofacies, predictable layer-cake stratigraphy, and lack of fluvial coarse siliciclastic deposits are characteristics of epeiric sea successions. The appearance of immature sandstone, poorly sorted conglomerate, braided fluvial deposits, and synsedimentary deformation in the upper part of Sequence 6 are interpreted as the onset of foreland basin development. Stacking relationships of redox sensitive, authigenic lithofacies in both the epeiric sea and foreland phases support recent research suggesting seawater redox conditions were in a state of flux during the apex of the purported Neoproterozoic Oxygenation Event. Organic matter and authigenic pyrite in Sequences 4 and 5 reflect increased primary productivity in surface waters fertilized by nutrients such as P and Fe adsorbed on loess particles. This mechanism could be expanded to a global scale and have contributed to the increase in atmospheric and oceanic oxygen levels. These findings redefine and highlight the significance of the Bambui Group for Neoproterozoic Earth history.

Geochemical characteristics of organic-rich intervals within the Cryogenian non-glacial Datangpo Formation in southeastern Yangtze Block-implications for paleoenvironment and its control on organic matter accumulation

To understand the mechanism of organic matter enrichment in the organic-rich intervals of the Cryogenian non-glacial strata, we report high-resolution geochemical data of the well-developed non-glacial Datangpo Formation at a section in the southeastern margin of the Yangtze Block, including iron (Fe) speciation, sulfur and organic carbon isotopic compositions and elemental contents. The organic-rich intervals are mainly distributed in the basal manganese (Mn) carbonate and Mn-bearing shales (intervalⅠ), and overlying black shales (intervalⅡ). The paleo-redox reconstruction shows a transition from ferruginous-dominated watermass during deposition of the IntervalⅠto euxinic-dominated watermass during deposition of the IntervalⅡ, which provides good conditions for the preservation of organic matter. A variety of geochemical indicators demonstrate that during deposition of the IntervalⅠ, elevated primary productivity in the surface water driven by hydrothermal activities and improved post-glacial basinal watermass exchange, coupled with some organic carbon influx from the dissolved organic carbon reservoir, collectively promoted the enrichment of organic matter. For the interval Ⅱ, enhanced chemical weathering accompanied by persistently warm climatic conditions exerted a major control on the organic matter enrichment by importing abundant nutrients, resulting in enhanced surface-water primary productivity. In addition, favorable sedimentation rates also made positive contributions to the organic-rich black shales in the intervalⅡ. Based on a combined analysis of paleoclimates, hydrological conditions and hydrothermal activities, this study puts forward organic matter enrichment models for the organic-rich intervals deposited during the Cryogenian non-glacial period.

Contrasting responses of phytoplankton productivity between coastal and offshore surface waters in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea to short-term seawater acidification

Abstract. Seawater acidification (SA) has been documented to either inhibit, enhance, or result in no effect on marine primary productivity (PP). In order to examine the effects of SA in changing environments, we investigated the influences of SA (a decrease of 0.4 pHtotal units with corresponding CO2 concentrations in the range of 22.0–39.7 µM) on PP through deck-incubation experiments at 101 stations in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, including the continental shelf and slope, as well as the deep-water basin. The daily primary productivities in surface seawater under incident solar radiation ranged from 17–306 µg C (µg Chl a)−1 d−1, with the responses of PP to SA being region-dependent and the SA-induced changes varying from −88 % (inhibition) to 57 % (enhancement). The SA treatment stimulated PP in surface waters of coastal, estuarine, and shelf waters but suppressed it in the South China Sea basin. Such SA-induced changes in PP were significantly related to in situ pH and solar radiation in surface seawater but negatively related to salinity changes. Our results indicate that phytoplankton cells are more vulnerable to a pH drop in oligotrophic waters. Contrasting responses of phytoplankton productivity in different areas suggest that SA impacts on marine primary productivity are region-dependent and regulated by local environments.

Drivers of Biomass and Biodiversity of Non-Chemosynthetic Benthic Fauna of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the North Atlantic

We examine the main drivers that may elevate biomass and biodiversity of non-chemosynthetic benthic megafauna of the lower bathyal (800-3500m depth) of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the North Atlantic Ocean (MAR). Specifically: 1. Primary production in surface waters (10°-48°N) from remote sensing data 2002-2020 over the MAR was not significantly different from abyssal regions to the east and west. We reject the hypothesis that presence of a mid ocean ridge may enhance surface primary production. 2. The quantity of particulate organic matter reaching the sea floor was estimated as a proportion of surface export production scaled by bathymetry. Flux was 1.3 to 3.0 times greater on the MAR as a function of shorter vertical transport distance from the surface than on adjacent abyssal regions. 3. Depth variation effect on species richness. Demersal fishes living between 41° and 60°N showed a maximum of species richness at 2000 m depth and linear increase in regional (Gamma) diversity of 32 species per 1,000 m elevation of the MAR above the abyss. Elevated topography provides niches for species that cannot otherwise survive. 4. Substrate heterogeneity. The MAR >95% covered with soft sediment with frequent hard rocky patches spaced at a mean nearest neighbour distance of <500 m. Over 90% were <1 km apart. Animals are readily able to disperse between such patches increasing biodiversity through the additive effect of soft and hard substrate fauna on the MAR. 5. Presence of a biogeographic overlap zone. The MAR harbours bathyal species known from Western Atlantic and Eastern Atlantic continental slopes with meridional asymmetry resulting in bias toward predominance of Eastern species. The mix of species contributes to increased diversity to the east of the MAR. Multiple factors support increase in biomass and biodiversity on the MAR. Biological data are almost entirely absent from 12° to 33°N, the part of the MAR which may be mined for polymetallic sulphide ore deposits. This study enables some predictions of biomass and biodiversity but there is urgent need for intensive biological sampling across the MAR throughout the proposed mining areas south of the Azores.

Redox-Controlled Ammonium Storage and Overturn in Ediacaran Oceans

As a key nutrient, nitrogen can limit primary productivity and carbon cycle dynamics, but also evolutionary progress. Given strong redox-dependency of its molecular speciation, environmental conditions can control nitrogen localization and bioavailability. This particularly applies to periods in Earth history with strong and frequent redox fluctuations, such as the Neoproterozoic. We here report on chlorophyll-derived porphyrins and maleimides in Ediacaran sediments from Oman. Exceptionally light δ15N values (< –10‰) in maleimides derived from anoxygenic phototrophs point towards ammonium assimilation at the chemocline, whereas the isotopic offset between kerogens and chlorophyll-derivatives indicates a variable regime of cyanobacterial and eukaryotic primary production in surface waters. Biomarker and maleimide mass balance considerations imply shallow euxinia during the terminal Ediacaran and a stronger contribution of anoxygenic phototrophs to primary productivity, possibly as a consequence of nutrient ‘lockup’ in a large anoxic ammonium reservoir. Synchronous δ13C and δ15N anomalies at the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary may reflect one in a series of overturn events, mixing ammonium and isotopically-light DIC into oxic surface waters. By modulating access to nitrogen, environmental redox conditions may have periodically affected Ediacaran primary productivity, carbon cycle perturbations, and possibly played a role in the timing of the metazoan radiation across the terminal Ediacaran and early Cambrian.

Mercury accumulation in the sediment of the Western Mediterranean abyssal plain: A reliable archive of the late Holocene

Temporal reconstruction of Hg deposition from sediment archives is relatively straightforward in organic-rich or high sedimentation rate environments, such as lakes and ocean margins. To retrieve long-term records at regional or global scales, deep-sea sediments are more appropriate, but such records are scarce and their reliability has been questioned because of possible post-depositional Hg diagenetic remobilization. Here, we investigated the accumulation of Hg in the Balearic Abyssal Plain (2850 m deep) of the Western Mediterranean through a comprehensive characterization of the chemical and isotopic composition (organic carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, major and redox-sensitive elements) of sediment trap material and sediment cores. The analysis of material collected in the sediment traps, deployed at 250, 1440, and 2820 m, indicates that Hg is (i) partially re-emitted to the atmosphere and mobilized in the twilight zone and that (ii) the Hg downward flux depends on the primary production in surface waters, suggesting that organic matter (OM) acts as the main Hg-carrier phase. As the Hg concentrations of material collected in the traps vary little with depth but the Hg:Corg ratio of the settling particulate matter decreases with depth, Hg must be re-adsorbed onto the more refractory fraction of the settling OM. Results of selective chemical extractions of the sediment indicate that Hg is very weakly coupled to the iron cycle but strongly associated with sulfur, supporting the assumption that its vertical distribution was only weakly altered by diagenetic remobilization. In addition, the distributions of S and δ34S in the sedimentary column exclude the possibility that local volcanism impacted on Hg enrichment of the sediments. Accordingly, a reconstruction of Hg accumulation rates (Hg-AR) during the Late Holocene is readily achieved. Biological mixing and smoothing of the sediment record, as revealed by the distribution of radionuclides in surface sediments, was considered in the interpretation of the Hg-AR record. The first anthropogenic Hg signal recorded in the studied cores corresponds to the Iron Age and the Roman Empire period, as Hg-ARs rose from the baseline (0.7 ± 0.2 µg m−2 yr−1) to an average value of 2.2 ± 0.5 µg m−2 yr−1. The Hg-ARs return to baseline values at the decline of the Roman Empire, display a small increase during the Medieval Period (1.5 ± 0.5 µg m−2 yr−1), increase abruptly at the onset of the Industrial Era, leading to a ~ 10-fold increase in Hg deposition in the last 120 years (8.9 ± 1.4 µg m−2 yr−1), and retreat progressively over the past 50 years.

Traits and drivers: Functioning of macrobenthic communities across the deep Fram Strait (Arctic Ocean)

Deep-sea regions provide vast ecosystem services such as biological habitat and nutrient cycling. Even though being threatened by climate change and facing possible biodiversity loss, these deep-sea ecosystems are poorly understood. So are macrobenthic communities and their functions within these ecosystems. Biodiversity and ecosystem function relationships as well as their link to environmental drivers can be assessed with the biological trait analysis. We used this approach for the first time for macrofauna assemblages across the deep Fram Strait between Greenland and Svalbard (1000–5500 m water depth) to evaluate their community-specific function from the upper continental slope down to the deepest known Arctic depression, the Molloy Deep. We aimed to investigate whether there are changes in benthic functioning along the bathymetric gradient and if so, which environmental stressors may drive these changes.In total, 16 stations were sampled with a giant box corer (0.25 m2) in 2016 and 2018. Sediments were sieved through a 0.5 mm mesh size sieve and fauna was identified to lowest possible taxonomic entity. Functions of species were characterized by using six traits split in 24 modalities gathered in a fuzzy coded species × traits array. Environmental parameters shaping the benthic habitat and reflecting food availability were gathered from remote sensing, mooring deployments, and sediment sampling.A distance-based redundancy analysis indicated near-bottom water temperature, seabed inclination, water depth as well as phytodetritial matter at the sea surface and seafloor (indicating food availability) to be the best variables explaining the trait and station distribution. Stations clustered into three groups based on their trait composition. Shallower stations characterized by high chlorophyll a concentration with large organisms, living within the sediment as well as predating specimens clustered in one group. A second group was characterized by stations with low chlorophyll a concentration and medium-sized, suspension feeding, epifaunal living macrofauna. A third group comprised stations with water depths ≥ 3000 m and was dominated by medium sized, surface deposit feeding and infaunal living specimens.Overall, the functional structure of macrofauna communities in the Fram Strait followed a food availability-driven gradient. Based on the relationship between sea ice, surface water primary production and food availability at the seafloor, these results point to macrobenthos being sensible to predicted anthropogenically generated environmental variations in polar regions. Alterations in benthic ecosystem functions might be expected when environmental conditions change.

Mapping cold-water coral biomass: an approach to derive ecosystem functions

This study presents a novel approach resulting in the first cold-water coral reef biomass maps, used to assess associated ecosystem functions, such as carbon (C) stock and turnover. We focussed on two dominant ecosystem engineers at the Mingulay Reef Complex, the coral Lophelia pertusa (rubble, live and dead framework) and the sponge Spongosorites coralliophaga. Firstly, from combining biological (high-definition video, collected specimens), environmental (extracted from multibeam bathymetry) and ecosystem function (oxygen consumption rate values) data, we calculated biomass, C stock and turnover which can feed into assessments of C budgets. Secondly, using those values, we employed random forest modelling to predictively map whole-reef live coral and sponge biomass. The whole-reef mean biomass of S. coralliophaga was estimated to be 304 T (range 168–440 T biomass), containing 10 T C (range 5–18 T C) stock. The mean skeletal mass of the coral colonies (live and dead framework) was estimated to be 3874 T (range 507–9352 T skeletal mass), containing a mean of 209 T of biomass (range 26–515 T biomass) and a mean of 465 T C (range 60–1122 T C) stock. These estimates were used to calculate the C turnover rates, using respiration data available in the literature. These calculations revealed that the epi- and microbial fauna associated with coral rubble were the largest contributor towards C turnover in the area with a mean of 163 T C year−1 (range 149–176 T C year−1). The live and dead framework of L. pertusa were estimated to overturn a mean of 32 T C year−1 (range 4–93 T C year−1) and 44 T C year−1 (range 6–139 T C year−1), respectively. Our calculations showed that the Mingulay Reef overturned three to seven (with a mean of four) times more C than a soft-sediment area at a similar depth. As proof of concept, the supply of C needed from surface water primary productivity to the reef was inferred. Since 65–124 T C year−1 is supplied by natural deposition and our study suggested that a mean of 241 T C year−1 (range 160–400 T C year−1), was turned over by the reef, a mean of 117–176 T C year−1 (range 36–335 T C year−1) of the reef would therefore be supplied by tidal downwelling and/or deep-water advection. Our results indicate that monitoring and/or managing surface primary productivity would be a key consideration for any efforts towards the conservation of cold-water coral reef ecosystems.

Geochemical signatures of redepositional environments: The Namibian continental margin

Trace metal abundances in marine sediments have been used extensively to interpret periods of elevated primary productivity and ancient ocean redox conditions. However, sediment reworking that results in post-depositional oxidation, such as bio-irrigation or lateral sediment transport through oxic water, can modify the primary geochemical signal of the sediment, which in turn may impact paleo-redox and/or -productivity interpretations. In the case of sediments on the Namibian Continental Margin (NCM), lateral transport and redeposition contribute to the accumulation of organic matter on the margin slope. To better constrain the geochemical effects of lateral transport on the NCM, we examined the trace metal signature (including solid-phase Fe, Mo, V, Ni, Cu and Ag, and pore-water Fe, Mo, and V) in surface sediments (up to 25 cmbsf) along a transect from shelf to slope through the primary (shelf) and secondary (upper slope) depositional zones of the margin. Despite varying bottom water redox conditions ranging from seasonally anoxic (upper shelf), suboxic (shelf break), and oxic (upper slope), each site has elevated total organic carbon contents (average TOC content of 9.1, 3.2 and 6.8 wt%, respectively), due to high surface water primary productivity and lateral transport of organic-rich material from the shelf to the upper slope. Our results show that the solid-phase contents of the productivity proxies Ni, Cu, and Ag parallel the organic carbon accumulations largely irrespective of the local redox conditions. In contrast, the solid-phase contents of V, Mo, and Fe respond to the local bottom water redox conditions at each site, being enriched under strongly reducing conditions and less-enriched under oxic bottom waters despite enhanced TOC at all three investigated sites. Thus, the enrichment of trace metal and TOC at each site on the NCM can not only be used to reconstruct primary depositional bottom water redox conditions but also to identify zones of sediment redeposition. Using an offshore transect allows for the identification of intense lateral transport and redeposition of organic-rich sediments that are occurring along the margin. The relative concentrations of both redox-sensitive and productivity-related trace metals suggest that the decoupling of trace metals and organic carbon enrichments occasionally observed in the geological record could be explained by the process of lateral transport and redeposition.

Community composition and photosynthetic physiology of phytoplankton in the western subarctic Pacific near the Kuril Islands with special reference to iron availability.

The western subarctic Pacific (WSP) is known as one of the most productive regions among the world's oceans in spring. However, its oceanic waters are also known as a High Nutrient, Low Chlorophyll (HNLC) region during summer due to low iron (Fe) availability in seawater. Indeed, recent studies have demonstrated that the distribution of Fe in the WSP is complex and heterogeneous. This study thus investigated the effects of Fe availability on the community composition and photophysiology of surface phytoplankton from coastal to offshore waters in the WSP in the summer of 2014. Although relatively high concentrations (>2 mg m-3) of chlorophyll (chl) a were found in the Sea of Okhotsk and some coastal waters, low chl a concentrations (<1 mg m-3) were commonly observed in offshore waters. Based on dissolved Fe and macronutrient concentrations, we deduced that low Fe availability limited phytoplankton growth in offshore waters, whereas low silicate and/or nitrate levels limited growth in the shelf areas. Scanning electron microscopy also revealed that the centric diatom Chaetoceros exclusively dominated the diatom assemblages in the shelf and coexisted with pennate diatoms in offshore waters, respectively. Primary productivity in surface waters was negatively correlated with the bottom of the euphotic layer or the light saturation index of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve, which indicates that the phytoplankton assemblages were well acclimated to in situ light conditions regardless of the water masses.

Species-specific genetic variation in response to deep-sea environmental variation amongst Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem indicator taxa

Understanding the ecological processes that shape spatial genetic patterns of population structure is critical for understanding evolutionary dynamics and defining significant evolutionary and management units in the deep sea. Here, the role of environmental factors (topographic, physico-chemical and biological) in shaping the population genetic structure of four deep-sea habitat-forming species (one sponge - Poecillastra laminaris, three corals - Goniocorella dumosa, Madrepora oculata, Solenosmilia variabilis) was investigated using seascape genetics. Genetic data (nuclear and mitochondrial sequences and microsatellite multilocus genotypes) and environmental variables were employed to build individual-based and population-level models. The results indicated that environmental factors affected genetic variation differently amongst the species, as well as at different geographic scales. For individual-based analyses, different environmental variables explained genetic variation in P. laminaris (dissolved oxygen), G. dumosa (dynamic topography), M. oculata (sea surface temperature and surface water primary productivity), and S. variabilis (tidal current speed). At the population level, factors related to current and food source explained the regional genetic structure in all four species, whilst at the geomorphic features level, factors related to food source and topography were most important. Environmental variation in these parameters may be acting as barriers to gene flow at different scales. This study highlights the utility of seascape genetic studies to better understand the processes shaping the genetic structure of organisms, and to identify environmental factors that can be used to locate sites for the protection of deep-sea Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems.

Paleo-environmental variation and its control on organic matter enrichment of black shales from shallow shelf to slope regions on the Upper Yangtze Platform during Cambrian Stage 3

To understand the evolution of oceanic redox conditions and organic matter (OM) accumulation in the shelf and slope regions of the Upper Yangtze Platform during Cambrian Stage 3, high-resolution geochemical data were obtained from two wells respectively representing shelf and slope environments. Based on redox proxies, widespread anoxic/euxinic waters with intermittent sulfidic water columns were formed from shallow shelf to deep water slope and basinal regions during Stage 2 and early Stage 3; then, widespread anoxic waters were reduced and oxic waters expanded during the middle Stage 3, after which fluctuating suboxic and oxic (occasionally anoxic) environments became predominant during late Stage 3. The presence of hyalophane and positive Eu anomalies suggest strong Ba-rich hydrothermal activities in the shelf and deep basin regions during early and middle Stage 3. The Ba-rich hydrothermal fluids and upwelling events enhanced the primary productivity in surface waters and subsequently promoted organic matter enrichment. During Stage 2 and early Stage 3, the high primary productivity driven by coastal upwelling and hydrothermal activity were the main factors controlling OM enrichment; during middle Stage 3, the local anoxic water condition became responsible for OM enrichment when oxic waters began to gradually expand; during late Stage 3, both primary productivity and redox conditions became the main control factors for OM enrichment. According to the analysis of primary productivity, redox conditions, hydrothermal activity and upwelling events, an evolution model is proposed to account for the paleo-environmental variation and the OM enrichment from shallow shelf to slope regions during Cambrian Stage 3.

Organic geochemical signals of freshwater dynamics controlling salinity stratification in organic-rich shales in the Lower Permian Irati Formation (Paraná Basin, Brazil)

The Lower Permian Irati Formation in the northeastern and central eastern Paraná Basin (southern Brazil) was investigated in terms of bulk and molecular organic geochemistry in order to enlighten the complex depositional paleoenvironment during deposition of Irati black shales. The geochemical data reflect temporal and spatial variations of freshwater incursions promoting salinity stratification and high primary productivity in surface waters with the establishment of photic zone euxinia. Overall, highly concentrated C17 long-chain alkylnaphthalenes point to algal blooms as a result of freshwater inflows into the Irati Sea, mostly in the central eastern basin segment, and resemble concentration variations of pristane, phytane and nC17. The freshwater inflows were also retraced by increasing chroman ratios toward the top of the investigated units along with the general decrease of further palaeosalinity indicators, e.g., gammacerane, tetracyclic (C24), β-carotane, and the herein suggested γ-carotane and lexane indexes. The existence of a water column stratification promoting organic matter preservation is supported by the detection of tetrahydrophenanthrene at high concentrations, in addition to the known prominent occurrence of gammacerane. The detection of C10 to C31 aryl isoprenoids in addition to C16 and C18 pseudohomologue aryl isoprenoids points to the presence of photic zone euxinia. In general, samples from the central eastern basin were deposited in a deeper marine setting with lower salinity than samples from the northeastern basin, which displays signals of a shallower marine environment with reducing bottom water conditions, both deposited under freshwater influxes.

Decadal-Scale Acidification Trends in Adjacent North Carolina Estuaries: Competing Role of Anthropogenic CO2 and Riverine Alkalinity Loads

Decadal-scale pH trends for the open ocean are largely monotonic and controlled by anthropogenic CO2 invasion. In estuaries, though, such long-term pH trends are often obscured by a variety of other factors, including changes in net metabolism, temperature, estuarine mixing, and riverine hydrogeochemistry. In this study, we mine an extensive biogeochemical database in two North Carolina estuaries, the Neuse River estuary (NeuseRE) and New River estuary (NewRE), in an effort to deconvolute decadal-scale trends in pH and associated processes. By applying a Generalized Additive Mixed Model (GAMM), we show that temporal changes in NewRE pH were insignificant, while pH decreased significantly throughout much of the NeuseRE. In both estuaries, variations in pH were accompanied by increasing river discharge, and were independent of rising temperature. Decreases in bottom-water pH in the NeuseRE coincided with elevated primary production in surface waters, highlighting the importance of eutrophication on long-term acidification trends. Next, we used a simple mixing model to illustrate the impact of changing river discharge on estuarine carbonate chemistry. We found that increased riverine alkalinity loads to the NewRE likely buffered the impact of CO2-intrusion-induced acidification. In the NeuseRE, however, elevated dissolved inorganic carbon loads further decreased the buffering capacity, exacerbating the effects of CO2-intrusion-driven acidification. Taken together, the findings of this study show that future trajectories in estuarine pH will be shaped by complex interactions among global-scale changes in climate, regional-scale changes in precipitation patterns, and local-scale changes in estuarine biogeochemistry.
