Over the last decade, the management of dental caries has evolved from the old adage of “drill and fill” to utilizing a clinically-based Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) program along with individualized caries prevention and remineralization plans. Integrating a CAMBRA protocol into the healthcare professionals' patient assessment can help meet the initiatives of the WHO and CDC by preventing tooth decay through science and health promotion. Methods: Following a preseminar knowledge assessment, learners attended a 2.5-hour lecture on the prevalence of dental caries, the various risk assessment tools, including the CAMBRA protocol, and the management products, and strategies. Following the lecture, learners were able to practice the protocol with patients and be observed and evaluated on their ability to assess risk, preform behavior management strategies, and plan caries prevention treatment plans. A follow-up session was conducted where students indicated learning through a post-assessment. Results: The CAMBRA protocol was integrated in to all dental hygiene clinics during the spring semester of 2013 and has continued as an assessment tool for student when determining caries risk levels and prevention planning and as an assessment tool for faculty to determine competency in these skills. Discussion: Although this module was initially created for the dental hygiene students, it can be utilized with any health care professionals who assess patient risk or make referrals to a primary dental care provider for treatment and re-evaluation. In medical education, it could be utilized as a lecture or grand rounds format. Educational Objectives By the end of this session, learners will be able to: Identify local, systemic, environmental, and behavioral risk factors contributing to the development of dental caries.Determine the caries risk level (i.e., low, moderate, high) of a patient.Identify caries risk management interventions (i.e., patient behavior modifications or counseling).Identify both prescription and over the counter oral health products available for patient use in the remineralization of enamel and the prevention of dental caries.Describe how oral health care products help with the remineralization process.Create a personalized caries prevention and management plan based on the patient's risk factor level.Determine if referral to the primary oral health care provider is necessary.
