Full thickness skin grafts for the closure of defects in irradiation-damaged skin

Summary The problem of the closure of defects in irradiation-damaged tissue has been closely studied with special reference to free skin grafts. The results of full thickness skin grafting obtained in the head and neck region 12 patients with chronic radio-dermatitis, 6 after lupus vulgaris and extensive radiotherapy and 14 cases after fractionated preliminary irradiation of malignant skin tumours are presented. The satisfactory results achieved indicate that full thickness skin grafts alone, or in combination with local flaps, could also be used in the primary closure of defects in irradiation-damaged areas.
