Efektivitas Penyelenggaraan Tempat Pelelangan Ikan (TPI) Desa Sungaibuntu Kecamatan Pedes Kabupaten Karawang Jawa Barat

The fish auction serves as a marketing center for the distribution of fish. The implementation of the fish auction is expected to enhance the selling prices of the fishermen's catch. The purpose of this research is to analyze the level of effectiveness of the fish auction implementation. Effectiveness is measured in two ways: first, effectiveness is measured using the Mahmudi formula. Variables measured include the number of boats landing fish at the fish auction, fish production, fish prices, revenue, auction fees, fish auction operational activities, and the reporting system at Sungaibuntu’s fish auction. Second, effectiveness is measured according to the fishermen's perceptions, with variables including fish auction as a facility, auction activities, and services. This research also analyzes the comparison of fish prices and the income of fishermen selling fish at the fish auction and outside the fish auction. This research uses descriptive quantitative methods. Primary data collection involves field observations, questionnaires, and interviews, while secondary data is obtained from relevant institutions, theses, and journals. Simple random sampling is used to obtain 37 fishermen respondents. The research results show that the overall effectiveness ratio values measured by the Mahmudi’s formula for the period 2020-2022, for the effectiveness of boat activities, auction fees, fish production, and auction revenue, are categorized as "Less Effective." Meanwhile, the effectiveness of TPI operational activities and monitoring reporting systems achieves a level of "Very Effective," and the effectiveness of fish prices at Sungaibuntu TPI reaches the level of "Effective." For effectiveness measured according to the fishermen's perceptions, the variables of fish auction as a service and facility are categorized as "Less Effective." Meanwhile, fish auction as a facility is categorized as "Effective." There is a difference in the income of fishermen selling fish at the fish auction compared to fishermen selling fish outside the fish auction.

Unveiling Regional Dynamics and Factors Influencing Fish Purchase and Consumption in Odisha, India

Despite India being a major global fish producer, per capita fish consumption remains notably low in several regions, raising concerns regarding the nutritional adequacy of diets. This study explores the factors influencing fish purchase and consumption patterns in the Cuttack and Khordha districts of Odisha, India. A comprehensive survey (n=400)was conducted, and a trans-regression analysis was applied to identify key factors. The results reveal that fish quality, with an emphasis on freshness, taste, and texture, is the most crucial factor influencing consumer preferences in both districts. Affordability, represented by fish prices, ranked second, while dressing facilities unexpectedly held significant importance, reflecting consumer preference for convenience in fish preparation. Sociocultural factors, including local traditions and dietary customs, also played a role but were less significant compared to other factors. The study highlights apromising trend of fish consumption exceeding recommended levels, contributing positively to nutritional goals. A comparative analysis betweenregions showed variability in meat consumption, with fish standing out as a primary dietary staple. These findings underscore the need for region-specific strategies to promote sustainable fish consumption, considering both economic and socio-cultural influences. The study contributes to the understanding of regional variations in fish consumption patterns and provides a foundation for targeted interventions to address nutritional challenges and promote sustainable dietary practices.

Forecasting the Volatility of Tuna Fish Prices in North Sumatra using the ARCH Method in the Period January - April 2024

Tuna (Euthynnus affinis) is one of the most important fisheries commodities in Indonesia with significant economic value, especially in its contribution to fisheries export revenue. However, the price of tuna experiences significant fluctuations that can affect local and national economic stability. This study analyzes the daily price fluctuations of tuna in the North Sumatra market from January 1, 2024 to April 29, 2024 using a time series analysis approach. Daily price data were collected and analyzed to identify existing price patterns and volatility. The Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (ARCH) model was selected to address the heteroscedasticity in the data, which suggests that the volatility of tuna prices can be well predicted based on past price behavior. The analysis steps include identifying the optimal ARCH model using the Autocorrelation Function (ACF) and Partial Autocorrelation Function (PACF), as well as testing parameter significance and normality assumptions to validate the model fit. The results show that the ARMA (1,0,0) model is the optimal one to model the price volatility of yellow tuna with the MAPE obtained of 2.382. compared to the ARMA-ARCH method with the MAPE value obtained of 2,747. Because it still contains heteroskedasticity effects, even though the results are good, the prediction results do not closely match the original data. The model is effective in improving price forecasting accuracy, which is important to support decision-making in risk management and economic planning in the fisheries sector. The findings contribute to understanding the dynamics of the yellowtail market and optimizing strategies for fisheries management.

Tracking the Development of Lit Fisheries by Using DMSP/OLS Data in the Open South China Sea

Nightly images offer a special data source for monitoring fishing activities. This study used images from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/Operational Linescan System (OLS) to analyze the early development of lit fisheries in the open South China Sea (SCS), which mainly occurred around the Zhong Sha and Xi Sha Islands. Based on peak detection and a fixed threshold, lit fishing positions were extracted well from filtered, high-quality DMSP/OLS images. The results indicated that fisheries experienced an apparent rise and fall from 2005 to 2012, with the numbers of lit fishing boats rising to a maximum of ~60 from 2005 to 2008, almost disappearing in 2009, peaking at ~130 from 2010 to 2011, and starting to decline in 2012. The fish price of major fishing targets declined by ~60% in 2009, which obviously impacted the year’s fishing operations. The reason for declined fishing operations in 2012 was that most of the lit fishing operations shifted farther south to fishing grounds around the Nan Sha Islands. We also explored factors shaping the distribution patterns of lit fisheries by using MaxEnt models to relate fishing positions to environmental variables. Major environmental factors influencing the distribution of lit fishing boats varied with years, of which water depth was the most important factor across years, with an optimal depth range of 1000–2000 m. In addition to depth, the distribution of lit fisheries was also influenced by SST, especially for the years 2005–2008, and a suitable SST was found between 26 and 28 °C. This study fills the knowledge gaps of the inception of lit fisheries and their dynamic changes in the SCS.

The vulnerability of fisheries-based livelihoods to climate variability and change in coastal small pelagic fishing communities in Tanzania

Fisheries-based livelihood activities constitute an essential means of income and well-being for the majority living in coastal areas. This paper examines vulnerability of fisheries-based livelihoods caused by climate variability and change. It focuses on three small pelagic fishers’ communities including Kipumbwi, Kilindoni, and Kilwa-Kivinje, along the Tanzanian coast, as a case study. Little research has been done on the effect of climate variability and change on the livelihoods of small-scale fishing communities in developing countries, particularly along the Tanzanian coast. In collecting data, questionnaire, focused group discussion and an interactive governance approach were used. Results showed that the natural vulnerability issues include, reduced catches, and strong winds. Economic vulnerability, mentioned lack of credit facilities. For social vulnerability, respondents mentioned an increased number of fishers and fishing vessels On the aspect of technology, respondents mentioned lack of modern fishing methods. As findings suggest, these vulnerability aspects, are possibly associated with anthropogenic factors such as illegal fishing, may not be related to climate change, but climate change may intensify them. The findings further showed that climate variability has negatively affected the fisheries on which fisher communities depend for income and for food security thus affecting their local economy. Climate change has negatively affected small pelagic fishers. The decline in fish catches and economic- un-matching changes in fish prices have negatively affected the fishing community's income, employment, and food security. The recommended means for reducing vulnerability include reducing taxes and levies, availability of facilities for reducing post-harvesting loss and availability of reliable markets.

Forecasting fish prices with an artificial neural network model during the tuna fraud

Agricultural price forecasting plays an important role in stabilising markets and ensuring food security. It provides insights for various stakeholders to optimise planting choices, allocate resources efficiently and mitigate potential risks. However, price forecasting during food safety incidents poses unique challenges. This study focused on a case of tuna fraud in Spain in 2017, which caused 105 people to fall ill and influenced consumer behaviour in fish purchases. To forecast fish prices during an incident of fraud, we used an artificial neural network model (ANN) based on the price of tuna and its substitutes, salmon and hake, as well as a communication index based on the number of posts regarding the tuna fraud from the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). ANN was compared with a threshold vector autoregressive model (TVAR), a classical time series econometric model that offers valuable insights into price dynamics. The results showed that, in the short term, TVAR offers a better price forecast for tuna and salmon, considering the impacts of the X platform. In the medium term, ANN outperformed TVAR. This study contributes to the ANN literature regarding agrifood price forecasting during food safety incidents.

Volatility of Fish Prices in Manado City Using Multivariate GARCH Model

Time series data modeling is generally performed using the assumption of homoscedasticity or residual variance that is constant over time. However, the homoscedasticity assumption cannot answer the problem of volatility in economic and business time series data, because generally data on economics and business have residual variances that always change over time. Therefore, a model developed with the assumption of not constant variance is known as heteroskedasticity model. Multivariate GARCH model is a development of the univariate GARCH model. The multivariate GARCH model can be viewed as a conditional heteroskedasticity model in a multivariate time series. This paper discusses the parameterization of covariance matrices such as Vech model representation, BEEK model and Constant Correlation model. For parameter estimation the maximum likelihood method is used. Furthermore, multivariate GARCH model application is applied for multivariate model. In this research, the data used are data on the prices of fresh fish in Manado. The fish price data is the price of Tuna, Skipjack (Cakalang), Cobe (Tongkol), Kite (Malalugis) and Selar fish (Tude). The ARCH effect test results show that the data meet the assumption of non-constant variance (heteroscedasticity). Upaya Peningkatan Nilai Tambah Ikan Bandeng Menjadi Abon Bandeng di La Primarasa di Desa Balun Kecamatan Turi Kabupaten Lamongan

The availability of milkfish during the season will be abundant, and cause the price of fish to fall, to anticipate it, the La Primarasa household industry in Lamongan makes fish floss from milkfish. This effort is carried out with the aim of increasing the added value of milkfish. This study is a quantitative research with the purposive sample method in selecting the sample, and using the calculation of added value analysis. The results of the study obtained that the amount of added value from processed milkfish into milkfish floss La Primarasa is Rp12,000/kg with an added value ratio of 24%.

Karakteristik Fisik dan Fisikokimia Ekado Ikan Gabus dan Ayam dengan Penambahan Kacang Tolo dan Jamur Tiram (Pleuretus Ostreatus)

Ekado in this research is an innovative product made from snakehead fish, chicken, cowpeas and oyster mushrooms. This Ekado product is made from a dominant propotion of snakedhead fish. This is caused by the lack of utilization of fish meat and equal distribution of fish consumption in Indonesia. The aims of this research are 1) to determine the results of sensory quality including shape, color, taste, aroma and texture, 2) to determine the nutritional content of snakehead fish and ekado chicken with the addition of cowpeas and oyster mushrooms, 3) to determine the selling price per package 250 grams. This research used a sensory quality method with a total of 37 panelists who were assisted with assessment observation sheets 1-5. The resulting data was processed using a single anova test followed by the Duncan test. To determine the nutritional content (carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber and calcium) a laboratory examination is carried out. The research results show: 1) There is an influence of the proportion of snakehead fish and chicken on the shape and texture criteria. 2) The nutritional content of the product is Carbohydrate 26.40%, Protein 17.60%, Fat 3.60%, Fiber 2.21%, Calcium 81.05mg/100g. 3) It is known that the selling price of snakehead fish and ekado chicken with the addition of cowpeas and oyster mushrooms is IDR. 30,000 per 250 gram packaging.

Kelembagaan dan Bauran Pemasaran Hasil Tangkapan Nelayan di Tempat Pelelangan Ikan (TPI) Desa Sumberanyar Kecamatan Paiton Kabupaten Probolinggo

Research on institutions and marketing of fishermen's catches at fish auctions. The background of this research is to introduce TPI Paiton to the community, to increase fishermen's income and fishermen's welfare in Sumberanyar Village, Paiton District, Probolinggo Regency. The purpose of this research is to determine the level of utilization and the need for basic facilities, functional facilities, and supporting facilities. To find out the application of 4P in the process of selling fish at TPI Paiton, Sumberanyar Village, Paiton District. The research was conducted in Paiton District using the Slovin method. The analytical method used is a qualitative approach. The results of the discussion showed that the condition of the facilities at TPI Paiton, both basic facilities, functional facilities, and supporting facilities were still all functioning and used by fishermen. The application of 4P at TPI Paiton is product, where the products at TPI Paiton are salted fish and fresh fish, then the price or price where the price set by traders at TPI Paiton is based on the purchase price of fish per kilo and customer prices. Place or a place where the place offered by the producer is still only a few places such as traditional markets, out of town, factories, and in their own homes. Promotions or promotions carried out at TPI Paiton have been effective by selling fish in traditional markets, outside the city, factories and in their own homes.

Minimnya Ketersediaan Penjualan Ikan di Pasar MMTC

The fish market in Medan, Indonesia, is a significant contributor to the local economy, providing an important source of protein for its residents. Fish product suppliers in the Medan MMTC market face challenges in managing inventory levels. The minimal availability of fish for sale at the MMTC market is an important issue that can affect the local economy and food security of local communities. This mini research aims to find out what factors cause the minimal availability of wet fish sales at MMTC as well as the influence of seasonal demand for fish at MMTC on fish availability. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method. Data was collected from articles and journals available on Google Scholar and other websites. Meanwhile, data collection techniques use interviews, observation and documentation. The research results show that the factors causing the minimal availability of wet fish sales at MMTC include: limited resources, increasing costs, changes in consumption patterns, limited infrastructure, and limited markets. In its synthesis, the influence of seasonal demand for fish in the MMTC market on fish availability is influenced by several factors that influence demand for fish in the market, namely: seasonal dynamics in demand for fish in the MMTC market, variability of consumers who buy fish in the MMTC market, and the influence of fish prices

RISK ASSESSMENT IN FINANCIAL DECISION MAKING ANALYSIS ON FISHERMAN PERSPECTIVE IN COASTAL REGION: A CASE STUDY

Assessing financial decision-making from a fisherman's perspective in coastal regions involves considering a range of risks. Market volatility, driven by fluctuations in fish prices and changing consumer demands, poses immediate challenges. Environmental factors, such as climate change and natural disasters, can disrupt fishing conditions, impacting yields. Regulatory uncertainties, including shifts in fishing quotas and environmental compliance standards, add complexities. Technological advancements may necessitate investments, while limited access to credit and interest rate fluctuations present financial risks. Study is done with secondary data such as case studies, literature reviews, books, blogs and internet sources. Findings show that it is reasonable to expect that conflicts in fisheries management will increase with time as human population grows and seafood demand increases. Optimized Nutritional Intakes of Fishers’ Children in Coastal Communities in Mabini, Davao de Oro, Philippines

In the Philippines, the fishers’ children are one of the groups with the highest prevalence of malnutrition. Mabini in Davao De Oro is among the municipalities affected by the high incidence of nutrition inadequacies. The study assessed the dietary intakes of fishers’ school-aged children during three seasons: Northeast Monsoon (NEM), summer, and Southwest Monsoon (SWM). A stratified random sampling was used to obtain the 112 fishing household data, and the three-day diet recall approach was utilized in gathering nutrition information of 178 fishers’ children during the 2017–2018 period. From the Kruskal Wallis test followed by Dunn’s post-hoc test, results showed that the total catch per week, income per week, and the average selling price of fish during the three seasons were significantly different with catch and income levels higher during the NEM followed by SWM and summer. Moreover, the results from the linear programming show that the average nutrient intakes of the children were found to be inadequate compared to the recommended energy and nutrient intakes. This result is more noticeable during the summer season when there are low catch and income levels. The results from the optimal diet plan suggest that the recommended nutrient intakes can be attained by increasing the consumption of locally available fish resources and decreasing the consumption of processed foods. Finally, local interventions such as food fortification, school-based feeding programs, and diet supplementation can increase the nutrient adequacy of children in coastal communities.

Effects of food price changes on child undernutrition among agricultural households in Nigeria

This study examines the effects of changing food prices on the nutritional outcomes of children under five years old in Nigeria, utilising data from the 2013 and 2016 Nigeria Living Standards Measurement Study – Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA). We applied correlated random-effects probit and fixed-effects regression models to analyse the data. Results indicate an increase in stunting and decreases in wasting and underweight conditions among children over the years studied. Specifically, higher prices for fish, eggs, beef, rice, and cooking oil have a significant association with increased stunting, while increases in the prices of maize and garri are associated with greater wasting. Underweight increase with higher prices of milk, maize, and rice. In contrast, modest increases in yam and beans prices have not exacerbated undernutrition. The study also highlights the importance of household income growth and women's involvement in financial decisions in reducing child undernutrition. We advocate for agriculture-led, nutrition-sensitive policies that address the high costs of animal proteins and staples such as rice, maize, and garri, while monitoring and carefully regulating upticks in the prices of yam and beans.

How price and non-price factors influence the market price of major carp: Findings from the dynamic ARDL approach

Recently, fish prices in Bangladesh have been growing, particularly the market price of major carp, even though the factors that may be contributing to this trend are unexplored. Therefore, this study considers some price and non-price factors to explore the market price dynamics of major carp species in Bangladesh. To explore the factors impacting the market price of carp fish, we apply advanced time-series econometric modeling, such as the recently devised dynamic simulated autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model using publicly available data on fish prices from 2005 M1 to 2021 M12. This period is attributed to the rapid transformation from mostly low-intensity farming to commercialization due to a rise in productivity and market price. Among the price factors, the findings demonstrate that the price of corn, soybean, and oilcake, and fisheries wage rate have a positive significant impact on fish price in both the short and long term. In addition, among the non-price drivers, GDP per capita, inflation rate, and fish consumption all have a significant positive influence on fish prices in the long run, whereas total production has a detrimental effect on fish prices in the long run. These results have significant policy ramifications for attaining the fish farmers' profit maximization and consumers' welfare maximization goals.

Demand for Fish in Urban Malawi: An Almost Ideal Estimation

There is a general consensus, among marketers, that dealing with competition requires their engagement with customers so as to build strong customer relationships. The purpose of this study is to find factors that influence the demand for various fish species caught and consumed in Malawi. Previous studies treated fish as a homogenous commodity even though there are different species of fish. This study is, therefore, the first to provide a disaggregated analysis of the demand for fish in Malawi employing primary data collected from the households in Blantyre city using a multistage stratified random sampling procedure. Results indicate that all the fish species used in the study, except matemba (Barbus paludinosus), are complementary and normal goods. Policy implications arising from this study are two-fold namely; policymakers need to make sure that people have more income to buy more fish and make sure that the price of fish does not just rise anyhow.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE INCOME OF FISHERMEN OF SERAYA ISLAND BATAM CITY IN THE SPAWNING SEASON OF DINGKIS (Siganus sp.)

One of the fish commodities that has great potential to be utilized by the fishermen of Seraya Island is Dingkis (Siganus sp.). During the spawning season, Dingkis experience a high price increase of 5 times the price during the non-spawning season, namely IDR 30,000-60,000/kg. Therefore, Seraya Island fishermen take advantage of this opportunity because Dingkis fish only spawn during a certain season, namely January-February, which coincides with Chinese New Year (Imlek). The aim of the research is to determine the income of Seraya Island fishermen during the Dingkis spawning season and the influence of the price of Dingkis, the number of Dingkis fish caught, and the number of other fish catches on the income of Seraya Island fishermen. The research was conducted on Seraya Island, Batu Legong Village, Bulang District, Batam City in February 2023. Data analysis was used to answer the first objective, namely by calculating income, the second objective was to test the influence of the independent variable on the dependent variable using SPSS type 26 software. The research results show that the average income of Seraya Island fishermen during the Dingkis spawning season is IDR 9,001,143/month. Partial test results on the number of catches of Dingkis fish have an effect on the income of Seraya Island fishermen. The price of Dingkis fish and the number of other fish caught have no influence on the income of Seraya Island fishermen.

Economic Analysis of Potential Offshore Aquaculture Practice to Enhance Diversification of Blue Economy in Nigeria

The oil and gas industry has long dominated Nigeria’s blue economic growth. However, a new frontier that can play sustainable economic growth in the maritime industry and therefore national economic leverage is offshore aquaculture. Hence, this paper aims to provide relevant information on the economic analysis of the potential offshore aquaculture practice to enhance the diversification of the blue economy in Nigeria using secondary data. Sensitivity analysis considering input variations of up to 45% is also performed to take care of the unforeseen. Offshore aquaculture in this paper refers to fish production in the Open Ocean using large cages/nets. Ten (10) fish cages of 37500-fish capacity per cage were hypothetically designed with fiberglass materials and installed in Escravos offshore. A mortality of 30% was used with the current prices of other required investments. The analysis recorded a breakeven period of 2 years and NPV value of over one trillion Naira in 9 years indicating massive profitability comparable to the oil and gas industry! Sensitivity analysis identified mortality/loss of fish and falling prices of fish as events that could adversely affect the investment. It is suggested that the investment should be done with experienced professionals in fishery, offshore engineering, and cost control.

Time-varying effects of crude oil price fluctuations on tuna fish prices

This research presents an investigation of the time-varying effects of crude oil on the price of three tuna species, namely skipjack, albacore, and yellow fin. The investigation analyses the impact coefficient of oil price fluctuation on tuna species over time with specific phases related to time points when crude oil prices fall, including December 2008 (due to the impact of the Financial Crisis), February 2016 (due to the impact of the US shale oil and gas revolution), and April 2020 (due to the impact of the global COVID-19). The analysis shows that the price of yellow fin and skipjack shows sensitivity to these phased oil price shocks but stays consistent after recovery. This research finds that the relationship between oil price and tuna price depends on specific phases of oil price fluctuations and that global crude oil price shocks could have immediate and short-term impacts on fish markets, especially during a period of financial crisis.

Women’s participation, challenges and problems encountered in major fish markets during the COVID-19 pandemic in Davao, Philippines

Women fish vendors actively participate in the fishery sector but they face various challenges regarding their financial capital and opportunities. There is a power imbalance within the market as men seem to dominate and women hold no power or voice to protect their rights. This study provides valuable insights regarding the perceptions and experiences of these women in the Davao region, by not only focusing on the role of women in fisheries and major fish markets in Mindanao, Philippines, but also on their contribution and the challenges they meet. We have conducted semi-structured field interviews with women fish vendors (n = 99) and in-depth follow-up interviews to validate the results (n = 80). Among respondents, 90% in Tagum, 80% in Panabo, and 75% in Davao City were vendors who did not own their stalls. Despite women’s active involvement in fish trading activities such as fish vending, fish brokering, and financing in the market, many of them do not have stalls on their own. It was found that women participate in the fish marketing sector because they received previous training from family members involved in the business (29%), or they wanted a well-paying job (19%), or it was their only economic opportunity (14%). Another reason was profitability (9%) to support their families (9%) and children (8%). Common problems encountered by women in the fish market included a decline in customers (40%), work exhaustion due to the combination of their market and domestic duties (14%), and rude customers and employers (10%). In addition, women also reported challenges regarding mobile vendors (9%), low fish prices (8%), and not having access to financial credit (8%). Many of the women support their husbands by providing additional income for their families. Overall, women fish vendors play a critical role in the local economy of their villages and families. This implies that greater support is needed for women to have financial access to fishing businesses and become beneficiaries of training and livelihood development programs while helping their families overcome food insecurity and poverty.
