Prevalence of Work-Related Stress and its Associated Factors among Nursing Staff in King Abdallah Complex at Jeddah City

Aim: This study aims to assess the prevalence of work-related stress and its impact on nurses’ work performance at King Abdullah Complex in Jeddah City. 
 Methods: A cross-sectional- study was conducted using a previously validated questionnaire distributed among nursing staff at King Abdullah Complex in Jeddah City.
 Duration of the Study: This study was conducted for some time from September 2022 until August 2023.
 Results: From a total of 263 nursing participants, the study findings reported that the prevalence of Work-related stress among nursing staff in the King Abdallah Complex at Jeddah City was 63.7% and most of the nurses feel that their job negatively impacts their physical or emotional health. Many nurses expressed that they have insufficient recognition or rewards for good performance at work.
 Conclusion: The findings of the study indicate that work-related stress is a pervasive concern among the nursing staff employed at King Abdullah Complex. A considerable percentage of nursing workers have reported encountering different levels of stress within their everyday work settings.

Deep breathing exercise at work: Potential applications and impact.

Hypertension is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and daily deep breathing exercise (DBE) is a promising intervention to reduce blood pressure and stress in adults. DBE is simple, time-efficient, and does not require specialized equipment, allowing participation in a wide variety of settings. The workplace is an ideal setting to implement DBE at the national level for several reasons, including a large proportion of waking hours spent in the workplace, high levels of sedentary time at work, prevalence of work-related stress, and regular breaks throughout the day potentially reducing worker error. While the degree of adherence to daily workplace DBE will be the responsibility of the individual, employers and managers can (and should) do much to remove barriers to participation. Specifically, this could include: implementing regular short breaks or classes to perform DBE throughout the day, covering subscription costs for smartphone applications that guide DBE, and creating incentive programs for continuing DBE participation. Implementing DBE in the workplace is a pragmatic approach to provide a low-cost blood pressure and stress reduction therapy to a substantial portion of the adult population in the US, at least 50% of whom have high blood pressure.

Work-related stress and associated factors among employees of Hawassa industrial park, southern Ethiopia: an institutional based cross-sectional study

BackgroundWork-related stress (WRS) is becoming an alarmingly growing public health concern worldwide. Due to globalization and changes in working conditions, people in low-income countries face growing work-relates stress. However, despite high prevalence globally, work-related stress among industrial park workers is not well studied in Ethiopia.Thus; the aim of this study was to assess work-related stress and associated factors among employees of Hawassa industrial park, southern Ethiopia.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional study was employed among 419 employees of Hawassa industrial park using an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire. Study participants were selected using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected by face-to-face interview. A workplace stress scale (WPSS) was used to assess work-related stress. The collected data were coded and entered into EPI data 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify associated factors. The statistical significance was considered at P-value < 0.05.ResultThe Overall prevalence of work-related stress was 47.5, 95% CI (43.2, 52.1). Variables such as temporary employment [AOR = 0.41, 95% CI (0.26–0.64)], poor working condition [AOR = 2.12, 95% CI (1.32–3.43)], work experience less than two and half years [AOR = 3.11, 95% CI (1.95–4.96)], poor learning opportunity [AOR = 1.82, 95% CI (1.10–2.30)], poor organizational support [AOR = 1.70, 95% CI (1.10–2.62)], current use of khat [AOR = 2.52, 95% CI (1.28–4.99)] and current use of alcohol [AOR = 2.27, 95% CI (1.44–3.58)] were significantly associated with work-related stress.Conclusion and recommendationThe study found high prevalence of work-related stress among employees of Hawassa industrial park. Temporary employment, poor working conditions, work experience < 21/2 years, poor learning opportunities, poor organizational support, current khat use, and current use of alcohol were significantly associated with work-related stress. Our study finding is recommending enhancing stress management skills and primary prevention on identified risk factors to industry employees.

Work Related Stress and its Effect on Mental Health among employees of Ain Shams University Hospitals

Abstract Background Work related stress reduces the overall mental and physical wellbeing of employees. Workers in health industry are more prone to work stress than any other workplace. Many researches were conducted among health-care professionals, but not among hospital employees who are not involved in the direct patient’s care. Objectives This study was aiming to measure the prevalence of work related stress among employees of Ain Shams University Hospitals, to determine its risk factors and to measure its effect on the occurrence of depression, anxiety and stress. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted upon a sample of employees in Ain Shams University Hospitals, working in the same job for at least one year and not involved in direct patient’s care. Employees were interviewed using the “workplace stress scale”, the “Depression Anxiety Stress Scale DASS-21”, and the “socioeconomic status scale for health research in Egypt” by El-Gilany. Results The study included 462 participants, their age ranged from 18 to 59 years (mean ± SD: 43.4 ± 10.9), 171(37%) were males and 291 (63%) were females, and the majority were in the middle and high social class (79.2% and 16.9%) respectively). Most of the employee experienced work-related stress: 40 (87.7%) of them, the moderate, severe, and dangerous levels were 32.3%, 22.5% and 7.6% respectively. Work-related stress was significantly associated with job category with engineers were the least stressed (50%) and workers were the most (94.1%). The majority of participants suffered any of the three mental ill-health and the frequency of depression, anxiety and stress (312 (67.5), 319 (69.0) and 239 (51.7) respectively). Severe/extremely severe levels of depression, anxiety and stress were observed among 20.8%, 34.6% and 17.6% of participants respectively. Work related stress was significantly associated with the three mental ill-health status. Conclusion This study revealed a high level of workrelated stress among hospital employee who are not involved in patient’s care with around fifth of them suffered severe levels of mental ill-health. Occupational stress resulted mainly from inadequate control over work duties and unpleasant or unsafe work conditions.

Occupational Health Problems among Seasonal and Migrant Farmworkers in Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BackgroundMigrant and seasonal farmworkers are at increased risk for occupational fatalities and injuries. Although such employment-related geographical mobility is receiving increasing attention, there is limited evidence about occupational health problems among seasonal farmworkers. Therefore, this study aims to investigate occupational health problems among seasonal and migrant farmworkers in Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was employed from October to December 2019 among seasonal and migrant farmworkers. The study was carried out in two sites of Amhara regional state, northwest Ethiopia. A cluster sampling technique was used to recruit 990 study participants. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were performed using SPSS version 20 to identify factors associated with injuries. The significance level was obtained at 95% CI and p-value ≤0.05.ResultsIn this study, the period prevalence of work-related injury among seasonal and migrant farmworkers was 32.5% (95% CI: 29.7, 35.9). Being unemployed before migration (AOR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.26, 3.91), working for >8 h/day (AOR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.16, 2.27), stress (AOR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.88) and thermal discomfort (AOR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.98) were the significant risk factors for work-related injury. In addition, nearly two-third (60.9%) of the study participants have shown three or more heat-related illness symptoms. Moreover, the prevalence of work-related stress among seasonal and migrant farmworkers was 67.6% (95% CI: 64.6, 70.7).ConclusionOccupational health problems among seasonal and migrant farmworkers in northwest Ethiopia remain a major public health problem. Hence, implementing tailored preventive measures like training on health and safety, and hazard control measures would be supremely important to minimize the risk.

Work-Related Stress and the Relationship with the Health Belief Model among Medical Doctors in a Tertiary Hospital in Port-Harcourt, Nigeria

Background: Work-Related Stress (WRS) is a harmful physical and/or emotional response resulting from a mismatch between the requirements of a job and the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker in the work environment. The health belief model (HBM) is a psychological health behaviour change model established to describe and predict health-related behaviours regarding the uptake of health services. This study sought to determine the prevalence of WRS and to assess WRS among medical doctors in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Rivers State, using the Health Belief Model (HBM).&#x0D; Methods: The study design was descriptive cross-sectional conducted among medical doctors in the UPTH. A proportionate stratified and random sampling method was used to recruit 363 medical doctors in two stages. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire which assessed respondents’ socio-demographics, Work-related Stress and Health Belief Model domains. Data was analysed using SPSS version 23.0. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to assess relationship between WRS and the HBM components, while the multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify the HBM components that significantly predicted work-related stress. The level of significance was set at p= 0.05.&#x0D; Results: Most of the respondents were females (56.5%), married (90.1%), Christians (93.7%) and ≥36 years (71.6%). The mean age of respondents was 39.7±0.45 years. The prevalence of work-related stress was 66%, (Overall mean score ± SD=3.30±0.27). All components of the HBM were significantly correlated with Work-related Stress, and perceived severity showed the strongest positive correlation (r=0.687; p&lt;0.001). All components of the HBM significantly predicted work-related stress except perceived susceptibility.&#x0D; Conclusion: All the components of the health belief model significantly predict Work-related Stress except perceived susceptibility. Measures to address stress among doctors in the workplace should put into consideration these domains of the health belief model.

Workplace stress and associated factors among vehicle repair workers in Hawassa City, Southern Ethiopia.

Workplace stress is a public health problem worldwide. Studies focusing on work-related stress among vehicle repair workers are scarce in African countries. The current study aimed to determine the prevalence of self-reported workplace stress and associated factors among vehicle repair workers in Hawassa City, South Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study design was employed among 347 vehicle repair workers from January 25 to February 22, 2019. Questionnaires were administered using interviews. Additional tools were used for weight and height measurements. The main findings were analyzed using descriptive statistics, bivariable, and multivariable logistic regression. The strength of association of variables was presented by odds ratio along with its 95% CI. The statistical assessments were considered significant at p<0.05. A total of 344 workers participated in the study. The prevalence of workplace stress among participants was 41.6% with 95% CI: (36.3-47.1). Factors associated with workplace stress were more than 10 years of work experience [AOR: 2.40; 95% CI (1.29-4.50)], work-related musculoskeletal disorder [AOR: 3.39; 95% CI (1.99-5.78)], squatting and lying work posture [AOR: 4.63; 95% CI (1.61-13.3)] and servicing large vehicles [AOR: 1.96; 95% CI (1.14-3.38)]. This study showed that the overall prevalence of work-related stress was substantially high. The independently associated factors were workers' service years, symptoms of body pain, and the work environment. Preventive measures need to be implemented in vehicle repair workshops by focusing on work environment improvements.

A study on the effect of occupational stress on job performance in the nursing staff of a tertiary care teaching hospital in Surendranagar district

Introduction: Occupational stress is a health hazard to the individual worker both physically and psychologically. Research for the past years shows that, signs of occupational stress appear to be rising amongst nursing profession. The ability of nurses to appropriately handle stress while on duty may have a significant impact on individual outcomes, especially job performance. Objective: This study was conducted to measure the work-related stress and its association with the job performance among nurses. Methods: A pilot study was done and prevalence of work related stress was 13 % on the basis of which sample size was calculated which was 102 (in open epi). The 102 nurses were selected randomly from a tertiary care teaching hospital of Surendranagar district. The data was collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire which included questionnaires on demographic variables, level of work stress and job performance. Results: The findings of the study revealed that moderate and severe level of work stress was present in 53% and 45% of nurses respectively. The mean job stress score was found to be higher among younger nurses than those of more than 40 years. There was a negative relationship between job stress and job performance (r = −0.01) among staff nurses. Conclusion: Based on study findings, it was concluded that all the nurses were suffering from mild to severe level of work stress. and it was negatively correlated with the job performance of the nurses. Hence, it is recommended that corrective measures may be planned by the authority to reduce the work stress of nurses to improve the job performance.

Work-Related Stress and Associated Factors Among Textile Factory Employees in Northwest Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BackgroundWork-related stress is becoming an alarmingly growing public health concern worldwide. Textile factories are among the most common manufacturing industries that have a higher rate of work-related stress. Investigating the prevalence and factors associated with work-related stress will help planners and decision-makers at every level in planning, managing, and evaluating the health status of the employees. Research evidence is limited for work-related stress in Northwest Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess work-related stress and associated factors among textile factory employees in Northwest Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was employed among 403 employees in Bahir Dar Textile Factory. Data were collected using an interviewer administered questionnaire, then entered into EpiData version 3.1, and analyzed using SPSS version 22 software. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were carried out. In logistic regression analysis, adjusted odds ratio (AOR), along with 95% confidence interval (CI), was used to identify the associated factors of work-related stress. A P-value<0.05 was considered as statistically significant.ResultsThe prevalence of work-related stress was 45.2%, with 95% CI=40.0–50.1%. Working in rotational shifts (AOR=2.33, 95% CI=1.34–4.03), current substance use (AOR=5.67, 95% CI=3.38–9.52), poor and medium social support (AOR=3.75, 95% CI=1.71–8.21 and AOR=3.26, 95% CI=1.39–7.64) were significantly associated factors with work-related stress, respectively.Conclusion and RecommendationNear to half of the study participants had work-related stress. Work shift, substance use, and social support were among the factors which affect work-related stress. Thus, interventions that could reduce work-related stress such as stress management programs should be considered.

Nurses’ work-related stress and associated factors in governmental hospitals in Harar, Eastern Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study

Work-related stress causes poor quality of nursing care and increases the risk of medical errors. Research evidence is so limited to nurses' work-related stress in eastern Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess work-related stress and associated factors among nurses working in governmental hospitals in Harar, Eastern Ethiopia. Institution-based quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 367 nurses from 15th to 30th March, 2015. Simple random sampling technique was applied to recruit study participants. Data were collected using structured self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were carried out. The statistical association was declared using adjusted odds ratio at 95% confidence interval (CI) and P-value of less than 0.05. A total of 398 study participants were involved in the study, and the response rate was 92.2% (367/398). More than half of 202(55%) of the participants were males. One third (33.8%, n = 124) of study participants' age ranged between 26 to 34 years. The prevalence of work-related stress in the current study was 66.2%. Nurses, who reared child (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.2, 3.7), working in intensive care units (AOR = 4.5, 95% CI: 1.4, 17.7), work on rotation (AOR = 2.5, 95% CI: 1.4, 4.4), and nurses who had a chronic medical illness (AOR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.2, 5.7) were significantly associated with nurses' work-related stress. Two-thirds of nurses who were working at government hospitals had work-related stress. Work-related stress was associated with child-rearing, working units, work on rotation, and chronic medical illness. We suggested the hospital's administration, and other concerned stakeholders should design a strategy to undertake necessary measures such as hiring more nurses to minimize workload and rescheduling work shift to alleviate work-related stress among nurses.

PREVALENCE OF OBESITY RELATED TO STRESS IN POLICE WORKERS- A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Background: Despite the prevalence of obesity and its increases in associated diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, no studies have addressed the spread of obesity among police officers working in stressful environment. Therefore, the present study conducted to access the prevalence of work related stress in police personnel.&#x0D; Aims and Objective: To access the prevalence of obesity and stress burden among police workers and to see association of stress burden of police workers with their obesity.&#x0D; &#x0D; Material and Method: This cross-sectional observational study done on 245 police workers in PAC, Sitapur, India. Subjects having more than ten years of working experience were included in study. Anthropometric measurements of subject recorded by following standard protocol. Standardized stress scale was used to access the degree of stress in police workers. Available data analyze and expressed in percentage, mean with SD and chi square test to see the significance of association.&#x0D; &#x0D; Results: According to result of body mass index 77.14% of subjects were obese and 9.8% of subject was overweight. According to waist circumference 82.04% of subjects were obese. Result of stress score showed that 31.84% of subjects having mild stress and 16.73% of subjects having moderate stress. 30.35% of subjects having abdominal obesity were suffered from mild stress and there association was highly significant (p=0.02).&#x0D; &#x0D; Conclusion: The study recommends health education programs to combat obesity and overweight. Regular counseling should be conducted to alleviate work related stress.

Work-related Stress and Associated Factors among Academic Staffs at the University of Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia: An Institution-based Cross-sectional Study.

Work-related stress is described as a physiological and psychological reaction to the harmful aspects of workplace content. Current evidence indicates that the world of education is a highly stressful occupation. However, in academicians in sub-Saharan African countries, such as Ethiopia, the prevalence and contributing factors are not well studied. This study was, therefore, aimed at filling this gap. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April 2018. Stratified sampling technique was used to select 535 study participants. To measure work-related stress, we used the pre-tested and structured self-administered University and College Union stress questionnaire. Finally, a significant association was established at p< 0.05 and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) in the multivariable model. The overall prevalence of work-related stress in 12 months was 60.4% [95% CI (57.4, 63.5%)].The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that smoking cigarette (AOR: 2.84, 95% CI (1.25, 6.50), high job demand (AOR: 3.27, 95% CI (2.05, 5.21), low job control (AOR:2.25, 95% CI (1.21, 4.20) and age < 28 (AOR:0.25, 95% CI (0.10, 0.63) were the factors associated with work-related stress. The prevalence of work-related stress was high. Furthermore, higher emphasis required on job demand, job control, and cigarette smoking to ease the burden of work-related stress factors. This research, therefore, recommended that other causes of WRS, such as working conditions and further large-scale study, be considered for future research.

Neurological Underpinnings to Understanding and Dealing with Stress at Work

In 1992, a United Nations report had called work stress as ‘The 20th Century Disease’. The ‘always on’ economy of the 21st century has ensured that the prevalence of work-related stress is omnipresent even now like the mobile phones that perpetrate it. As stressors in the environment are continually present, what appears to be an antidote, is to change the response and have a more resilient response. In discussing resilient response, the article more specifically focuses on neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity or ‘brain plasticity’ refers to the brain’s ability to change or adapt both physically and functionally throughout life by stimulation from one’s environment, behaviour, thinking, emotions, etc. The article is based on this plasticity and the contention that brain can be structurally altered through the practice of mindfulness and meditation to develop resilience to stress, and respond better to stress. The article draws from the recent findings in neuroscience to strengthen this argument.

Work-related stress assessment among a garment factory employees in Bangalore suburban locality

Background: India's Garment Industry has been rapidly growing in last few years. The Garment Industry is of major importance to the Indian economy as it contributes substantially to India's export earnings. Thus employees working in the above sociological context of working life are expected to be affected by the general acceleration of the pace of life, contributing to work intensification and constant time pressure. Managers play a key role in reducing the significant sources of stress and shaping the future of employees. Thus the above study was undertaken among managers and supervisory level staff. The objectives of the study were to estimate the magnitude and level of work-related stress and to find the association of socio-demographic factors with work-related stress in garment manufacturing factory. Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken for 4 months, from October 2015 to January 2016, in a selected garment factory, located in the periphery of Bangalore city. A total of 167 supervisors and 41 managers, were included in the study. Stress was assessed by using ‘Tool to assess and classify work stress and associated symptoms’, developed by Centre for public health, NIMHANS. Results: Prevalence of work-related stress was 26% (95% CI; 18.04-26.36). Managers had higher prevalence of stress (29.3%) when compared to supervisors (25.1%). Majority of managers were perceived to have moderate stress level (58.4%) when compared to supervisors (26.10%). Among all the socio-demographic factors; age, total monthly income, travel time and mode of transport were significantly associated with work-related stress (p&lt;0.05). Conclusions: Organization changes viz., effort-reward imbalances, needs to be corrected and appropriate transport facilities meeting the employee requirements have to be provided, to cope up stress associated with travelling.

Association of Job Strain With Cortisol and Alpha-Amylase Among Shift-Working Health Care Professionals in Laboratory and Field

Although the prevalence of work-related stress has increased, knowledge on the contributions of that stress to long-term adverse health effects is still lacking. Stress biomarkers can reveal early signs of negative health effects, but no previous studies have measured both acute stress reactions and long-term exposure to job strain using both salivary cortisol and α-amylase (AA). The present study examines the association between job strain and these biomarkers among shift-working female health care professionals in the laboratory and the field. The 95 participants were recruited from hospital wards categorized in either the top (high job strain [HJS] group, n = 42) or the bottom quartile of job strain (low job strain [LJS] group, n = 53), as rated by survey responses. Participants' self-perceived job strain was at least as high or low as the ward's average estimation. Saliva samples were collected during the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), preselected morning and night shifts, and a day off. There was a larger increase in the cortisol concentration of participants in the HJS than in the LJS group (2.27- vs. 1.48-fold, respectively, nonsignificant) during the TSST. Participants in the HJS group also had higher salivary AA levels 30 min after awakening on the morning-shift day than those in the LJS group (p = .02), whereas the salivary cortisol awakening response on the day off was higher in the LJS group (p = .05, education as a covariate). The remaining stress-biomarker results did not differ significantly between groups. These data suggest that HJS in shift-working health care professionals is weakly associated with changes in stress biomarkers.

Work-related stress and associated factors among nurses working in public hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

Work-related stress is a pattern of reactions to work demands unmatched to nurses' knowledge, skills, or abilities; these challenges exceed their ability to cope, resulting in burnout, turnover, and low quality patient care. An institution-based cross-sectional study of 343 nurses was conducted in public hospitals of Addis Ababa in 2012. Data were collected by pretested and self-administered questionnaires using a nursing stress scale. One hundred twenty-one (37.8%) (95% confidence interval: 34.3 to 39.1) nurses reported experiencing occupational stress. Significant associations were found between nurses' stress and gender, work shift, illness, marital status, and worksite or unit. Prevalence of work-related stress was higher than expected and opportunities exist for stake holders to design stress reduction and management programs for nurses.

Checkout cashier work and counter design – Video movement analysis, musculoskeletal disorders and customer interaction

This study was conducted in order to analyse checkout cashiers’ movements at a checkout counter during interaction with customers and the prevalence of work-related stress and musculoskeletal disorders in checkout cashiers. In one shop, six cashiers were videotaped during the workday, and 50 cashiers from seven shops from the same chain of stores responded a questionnaire. Cashier activities and movements, customer interaction and counter design issues were analysed from the video data. Prevalence of work-related stress and musculoskeletal disorders was obtained from the questionnaire. It was found that 76% of all items were manually turned or angled. With a better adjustment of the scanner and a standardised positioning of the EAN-code, many of these movements could be avoided. Furthermore the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was quite high (68% for the neck). The questionnaire results showed that many cashiers experienced stress, giving a high percentage of cashiers in the “dedication under pressure” group. The behaviour of the customers was the major cause of stress. Other sources of stress arose from bad design or function of the computer system or other technical equipment. Relevance to industry In this study several problems regarding cashier work were identified and solutions, relevant to counter and package designers, shop managers and cashiers are suggested. Data obtained on cashier movements and prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders are given.
