Work related musculoskeletal disorders in school teachers: risk factors, prevalence, and association with health-related quality of life in Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

Introduction. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain (MSP) and correlations between associated risk factors, physical activity levels, stress, and quality of life among schoolteachers in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study using SPSS version 23.0 for the statistical analysis, was conducted using the Shapiro–Wilk test, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA test to compare the quality of life scores and stress level scores based on variables. Results. In total, 342 teachers working in private and public schools were recruited. Our results showed a high prevalence of MSP among teachers. The most reported areas were the lower back, shoulder, and neck, followed by the upper back. The suggested causes are long hours spent on devices, as the average hours spent on devices range from 6 to 9 hours, heavy load of teaching from 16 to 30 classes per week, old age in most participants (35 years and above), and low physical activity. Moreover, quality of life is low among teachers with known chronic medical conditions and teachers working in private schools. Stress was moderate when all variables were tested. Conclusion. Work-related MSP are highly prevalent among schoolteachers in the UAE. A high prevalence is associated with older age, longer teaching hours, higher teaching load, poor quality of life, and moderate stress.

Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Pain among Sonographers in Makkah Province and Factors Associated with the Pain: A Cross-sectional Study

Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal pain is a serious public health issue affecting healthcare providers, particularly, sonographers. The lack of research into this issue, together with the limited knowledge of factors associated with pain among Saudi sonographers promoted the authors to perform this study. Aim: To explore the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain and potential factors related to this disorder among sonographers. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study targeted 102 sonographers working in the Radiology Departments of hospitals located in the Makkah province from September 2019 to February 2020. The questionnaire comprised 27 questions11 questions related to demographic and psychosocial, nine on work scheduling and task factors (average time per scan and amount of job tasks), one on anatomical areas affected by pain over the last six months, six questions on work-related posture factors (position of the body during scanning). Bivariate analysis was considered to investigate the relationships between workrelated musculoskeletal pain and potential factors affecting the musculoskeletal system of sonographers. Results: The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain among Saudi sonographers was 81 (98.78%), and the pain was located at a single or multiple body sites, with the highest being in shoulders (70, 86.4%), followed by lower back (61, 75.3%), hand and wrist (58, 71.6%). Mental stress was only associated with shoulder pain (p-value: 0.03), and demographic factors were related to lower back, hand and, wrist pain (p-value ≤0.003). Upper back pain was significantly related to workrelated posture factors (p-value ≤0.008), and both work related posture factors, as well as task factors, have shown a significant relationship with lower back pain (p-value ≤0.04). Conclusion: Work-related musculoskeletal pain is highly prevalent among Saudi sonographers and the pain from different anatomical parts were found to be associated with different factors including psychological, demographic, task, and work-related posture factors.

An investigation of the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain and related disability among poultry slaughterhouse workers: a cross-sectional study.

The poultry slaughterhouse workers (PSW) are at substantial risk of developing work-related musculoskeletal pain (WMSP) at workplace due to their work. This study investigated the prevalence rate of WMSP and related disability among the PSW. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 78 PSW (40 women and 38 men) in the region of northern Thailand. The prevalence rate of WMSP was evaluated using the Standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (SNMQ). The disability related to the MSP was evaluated using a series of disability questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the WMSP. Data on the disability were summarized in frequency, mean (M), standard deviation (SD) and percentage. The prevalence rate of WMSP in the past 7days were higher in the shoulder region (61.5%, N = 48) followed by wrists/hands (60.3%, N = 47), and lower back region (35.9%, N = 28). The WMSP over the past 12months was also high at the shoulder (61.5%, N = 48), wrists/hands (60.3%, N = 47), and neck region (37.1%, N = 29), respectively. The overall disability related to WMSP among PSW was found to be mild to moderate across different body regions. PSW had a high prevalence rate of WMSP in the shoulders, wrists/hands, lower back, and neck regions. However, the PSW with WMSP reported only mild to moderate disability in the work.

Prevalence of ergonomic hazards and persistent work-related musculoskeletal pain among textile sewing machine operators

BackgroundTextile sewing machine operators are exposed to hazards and pain that accumulate over time. The objective of this study, therefore, was to assess the health and safety hazards, and persistent pain among textile sewing machine operators. MethodsThe study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional design in which 287 operators were recruited. Data were collected using questionnaire, observational checklist and analysed using descriptive statistics and Chi square test at 5% significance level. ResultsThe overall prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain (WRMP) in a. the last 12 months and b. The last 7 days were 92% and 58% respectively. Low back pain incidence was 71.1%. There was a significant association between age and WRMP in the last 12 months (p = 0.018) and 7 days (p = 0.048). There was also a significant association between years of working experience and WRMP (p = 0.023) in the last 12 months. Gender (p = 0.001) and types of seats (specifically stools (p = 0.002) and stools with cushions (p = 0.005)) were significantly associated with work-related musculoskeletal pain in the last 7 days. ConclusionPhysical and ergonomic hazards were identified to be more associated with the sewing machine operators than any other hazard. Proper awareness and education should therefore be given to the textile sewing machine operators on safe practices to minimize hazards and persistent pain associated with their routine operations that could lead to temporary or permanent health damages.

Quantitative Assessment of Surgical Ergonomics in Otolaryngology.

Objective evaluation of the ergonomic risk of common otolaryngology procedures and assessment of work-related musculoskeletal pain and injury. Cross-sectional intraoperative assessment and survey. Department of Otolaryngology at a tertiary children's hospital. Sixteen otolaryngology attendings, fellows, and residents participated in a blinded study. Intraoperative ergonomics was assessed for tonsillectomies, adenoidectomies, and tympanostomy tube insertions using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA). Follow-up surveys were sent to all participating surgeons to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and formal ergonomic training. Zero percent (N = 0/275) of intraoperative observations were found to have a negligible level of ergonomic risk, with 47% low risk, 37% high risk, and 16% very high risk. Tympanostomy tube insertions conferred less risk than tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, while the use of headlamp or loupes conferred increased risk. Eighty percent of respondents reported having musculoskeletal pain and 40% reported experiencing pain while operating within the past year. The most common area of pain was the cervical spine. No surgeons reported formal ergonomic training. Our study demonstrates an unacceptable level of ergonomic risk for common procedures in otolaryngology. Furthermore, most participants reported experiencing musculoskeletal pain despite the duration of examined procedures being relatively short. The high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain and the lack of ergonomic training in our cohort highlight the need for increased awareness of ergonomics as well as the development of formal ergonomic curricula.

Prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain in masonry apprentices

The construction industry, specifically masonry, reports more work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) rates than the general industry. Masonry apprentices are assumed to be healthy, yet may have WMSDs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS), time loss, and healthcare use among apprentices. 183 brick and block masonry apprentices completed surveys on demographics, work history, MSS, and functional well-being. The prevalence of MSS was calculated by body region, time loss, and healthcare use. The relationship between MSS, and perceived global physical and mental health was assessed. Approximately 78% of apprentices reported MSS, most in several body regions. Low back and wrists/hands were most prevalent, although few missed work or sought healthcare. Lower functional health and well-being was reported. Apprentices reported MSS comparable to previous studies of journey-level masons. Apprenticeship programmes could integrate ergonomics education to help apprentices develop safety culture early in their careers. Study of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Pain and Health-related Quality of Life among Hospital Workers

Purpose: This study examined the work-related musculoskeletal pain and quality of life of hospital workers. Methods: Self-reported questionnaires were sent to 350 hospital workers at Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, of which 341 were returned. The questionnaire had four items that covered the demographic information, areas of musculoskeletal problems, pain rating scale, and quali ty of life. The analysis was completed using descriptive statistic, and the differences between pain and demographic variables were iden tified using a chi-square test. The differences between the type of occupation and quality of life were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and a Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The 12-month prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain was 86.1% of physical therapists, 86.5% of occupational thera pists, 77.1% of dental hygienists, and 75.8% of nurses. A significant difference in the general and work related variables was observed between the subject with a physical burden and type of occupation. The most affected pain sites of the physical therapist included low back, hand and wrist, shoulder, and neck. The occupational therapists included the hand and wrist, shoulder, neck, but the nurses and dental hygienists reported the shoulder, back, hand and wrist. A significant difference in the quality of life was noted between the sub jects in physical therapists and dental hygienists and the subjects in the nurses and occupational therapists (p=0.00). Conclusion: These findings show that hospital workers appear to be high risk for work-related musculoskeletal pain, and the quality of life of physical therapists and nurses was higher than that of dental hygienists and occupational therapists.

Work-related musculoskeletal pain and its association with common mental disorders among employees of a poultry producing company in Southern Brazil.

Musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common occupational problems in the industrial society and its prevalence is potentially associated with mental disorders. To estimate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain and its association with occurrence of common mental disorders among employees of a poultry processing company in Southern Brazil. Cross-sectional study conducted in 2010 with 1,103 employees aged 18 to 52 years old. Musculoskeletal pain was investigated based on a human figure adapted from the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire. We considered reported work-related pain in any part of the body in the past 12 months. Occurrence of common mental disorders was assessed- by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were obtained by Poisson regression with robust variance. The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain was 40.3% (95%CI 37.4-43.2) for the total sample, 46.8% (95%CI 43.2-50.5) for women and 27.8% (95%CI 23.2-32.3) for men. The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was twice higher for the participants with common mental disorders compared to those without this condition (PR=2.27; 95%CI 1.99-2.58). This effect remained significant after adjustment for sociodemographic, behavioral, health-related and occupational variables. The results of the present study point to the relevance of preventive measures to promote the mental and physical health of workers in order to reduce or minimize the occurrence of pain.

Prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in primary care dentists

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dentistry is among the occupational categories that most inflicts its practitioners to a series of risk factors to develop musculoskeletal disorders, especially the maintenance of static postures, repetitive activities, long work days, poorly designed work environment, stress and handling of chemical and biological materials. The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain in primary care dentists. METHODS: The sample consisted of 167 primary care dentists, who answered questionnaires relating to musculoskeletal pain, social-demographic data, lifestyle, occupational characteristics, fatigue and ability to work. RESULTS: The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was high for upper limbs (38.3%), lower limbs (34.7%) and on the back (27.5%). The was a statistical association in the three body segments, with family income, associated morbidities, daily and weekly working time, the perception of fatigue, and ability to work. CONCLUSION: The studied sample showed a high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain, which serves as a warning flag to the adoption of public policies to improve the working conditions of the dentists surveyed.

Work-related Musculoskeletal Pain and Health-related Quality of Life among Physical Therapists in Korea

Purpose: Physical therapists are likely to be exposed to work-related musculoskeletal pain due to excessive repetitive tasks. This study was conducted to identify the relationship between work-related musculoskeletal pain and quality of life of physical therapists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaires was sent to 200 physical therapists at in Seoul and Kyoungido. The questionnaires was returned by 170 physical therapists. The questionnaire had included 4 items that coveringed demographic information, areas of musculoskeletal problems, pain rating scale, and WHOQOL-BREF. The analysis was completed using descriptive statistics, and differences between pain and demographic variables were identified using the chi-square test. The relationship between work-related musculoskeletal pain and quality of life was analyzed by t-test and Pearson`s correlation. Results: The overall prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain was 76.8%. The most affected pain sites included the low back (48.8%), shoulder (45.,2%), hand and wrist (43.5%), and neck (33.3%). Pain ratings of subjects with pain was were moderate. There was a A significant difference for the subdomains of quality of life was observed between the subjects with musculoskeletal pain and those without pain. Weak negative correlations (r=-0.28) were observed between pain rating scale and QOL. Conclusion: These findings show that physical therapists appear to be at a higher risk for work-related musculoskeletal pain and physical domain of QOL. Therefore, Ffurther research is needed to investigate examine the effect of risk factors and ergonomics as physical load, general health status on prevalence of musculoskeletal pain.

Work related musculoskeletal pain among teachers in selected public secondary schools in Ile-Ife, Nigeria

The impact of musculoskeletal pain specifically within the teaching profession has not been given sufficient attention in the literature especially in Nigeria. This study determined the prevalence of work related musculoskeletal pain among public secondary school teachers in Ife-Central Local Government Area (LGA), Osun State, Nigeria.Nordic Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire was used as the survey instrument.A total of 240 questionnaires were distributed but 219 questionnaires were returned yielding a 92% response rate.The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result shows that prevalence of work related musculoskeletal pain (WRMSP) was 58%. Work Related Musculoskeletal Pain occurred mostly in theshoulder (31.1%), neck (28.3%), and wrist/hand (25.6%). High prevalence of WRMSP were reported in females (66.1%) and 24.4% of teachers with WRMSP were less than 5years of teaching experience.Prolonged standing, walking and sitting were activities that predispose respondents to WRSP. It can be concluded from the study that more than average public secondary school teachers had WRMSP and shoulder joints, neck and wrist joints are majorly affected. Education programmes on prevention and coping strategies for musculoskeletal pain are recommended for teachers in order to avoid or decrease WRMSP. Occupational Health Hazards of Working in the Interventional Laboratory: A Multisite Case Control Study of Physicians and Allied Staff

BackgroundThe occupational hazards of working in the interventional laboratory have been inadequately studied for physicians and remain unaddressed for nonphysician personnel. ObjectivesThis study sought to determine whether the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain, cancer, and other medical conditions is higher among physicians and allied staff who work in interventional laboratories compared with employees who do not. MethodsMayo Clinic employees who work in affiliated hospitals with interventional cardiology or interventional radiology laboratories took an electronic survey. Results were stratified on the basis of self-reported occupational exposure to procedures that involve radiation. ResultsThere were 1,543 employees (mean age 43 ± 11.3 years, 33% male) who responded to the survey (response rate of 57%), and 1,042 (67.5%) reported being involved with procedures utilizing radiation. These employees reported experiencing work-related pain more often than the control group before (54.7% vs. 44.7%; p < 0.001) and after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, pre-existing musculoskeletal conditions, years in profession, and job description (odds ratio: 1.67; 95% confidence interval: 1.32 to 2.11; p < 0.001). Musculoskeletal pain varied significantly by job description, with the highest incidence reported by technicians (62%) and nurses (60%) followed by attending physicians (44%) and trainees (19%; p < 0.001). There was no difference in cancer prevalence between groups (9% vs. 9%; p = 0.96). ConclusionsMusculoskeletal pain is more common among healthcare workers who participate in interventional procedures and is highest in nonphysician employees. The diagnosis of cancer in employees who participate in procedures that utilize radiation was not elevated when compared to controls within the same departments, although any conclusion regarding causality is limited by the cross-sectional nature of the study, as well as the low overall prevalence of malignancy in our study group.

Are there work-related musculoskeletal problems among teachers in Samsun, Turkey?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain (WRMSP) and depression and the quality of life (QOL) among teachers in Samsun, Turkey. Among 605~participants 99.30% (n=602) completed the survey. A face-to-face questionnaire was given to the participiants in order to evaluate the QOL (Short Form 36, SF-36), the presence of depression (Beck Depression Inventory, BDI) and the presence of pain (Visual Analogue Scale). Among the participants (n=602), 290 were women (48%) and 312 were men (52%). Three hundred sixty three (60.3%) of the participants reported that they had work-related pain. Most of the participants had WRMSP in low back (74.9%), shoulder (55.9%), neck (47.9%), back (42.7%), knee (30.9%) regions. There was a significant difference for BDI and the subscales of SF-36 test, except the emotional role limitation, mental health and energy between the participiants with WRMSP (Group 1) and the participiants without WRMSP (Group 2). BDI scores were significantly higher in the Group 1. The subscale scores of SF-36 were significantly lower in the Group 1. There was a negative correlation between SF-36 and BDI scores; indicating that teachers who have more depressive symptoms have also a lower QOL. Pain in neck, shoulder, back and low back regions are frequently seen in teachers. Depression is common and its presence reduces the QOL of teachers. Modifications of ergonomics in working conditions may reduce the frequency of these complications. The habit of carrying heavy loads, awkward back postures, longterm repetitive physical activities, psychosocial stressors and longterm standing must be reduced.

Work-related musculoskeletal problems among pharmaceutical sales representatives in Samsun, Turkey

Objectives: Many studies have been performed about work-related musculoskeletal pain (WRMSP) in various groups of professions. However pharmaceutical sales representatives (PSRs) have not been investigated with regard to their musculoskeletal problems related to their works. This study was aimed to investigate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal pain (WRMSP) and depression among PSRs; the quality of life in these subjects and to investigate which socio-demographic variables are associated with the presence of complaints, in Turkey. Methods: Among 170 participants, 73.5% completed the survey. A face-to-face questionnaire was given and SF-36 (Short Form-36) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were applied. Results: The highest frequencies of WRMSP were in low back (55.4%) and shoulder (41.1%). The most frequently self-reported complaints of the PSRs were long time standing at work (68.8%) and driving long distances (61.6%). There was significant difference between the groups with and without WRMSP all subgroups of SF-36 test ( p< 0.05). Fourteen of the participants had depression according to BDI. There was a negative correlation between SF-36 and BDI scores ( p< 0.05). Conclusions: WRMSP is common among PSRs in Turkey. Besides; depression, reduced QOL and low back pain are frequently seen. Modifications in ergonomics at work and work conditions may solve these problems.
