Prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) refers to the uncontrolled accumulation of triglyceride (TG) in the liver when the person has no other liver disease etiologies. Among all causes of neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy is the most common one worldwide, and it causes notable morbidity and increases mortality. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy and NAFLD has been demonstrated in few studies. This study aims to summarize existing data estimating peripheral diabetic neuropathy prevalence among sonographically detected NAFLD patients. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google scholar for articles in the English language up until October 2021 for the clinical trials of diabetic neuropathy in NAFLD patients and used the articles for a systematic review and meta-analysis. Seven studies (6,918 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)) were involved. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy among T2DM patients with ultrasound (US) detected-NAFLD was 0.48 (95% CI= 0.31-0.65, I2= 99.01%), however it was not significantly different from patients without NAFLD (OR=1.02, 95% CI= 0.89-1.17. p=0.748, I2=81.6%). The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy among T2DM patients with NAFLD is not significantly different from patients without NAFLD.

The Risk factors of diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic patient in Services Hospital Lahore

Objective: To investigate the risk factors and to study the effect of these risk factors on the diabetic neuropathy (DN). Method: th The study was a retrospective case-control, hospital-based study and was carried out from18th November 2021 to 20 December 2021 through the questionnaire. Respondents were patients of diabetes mellitus (n=277) who visited the Diabetes Management Center of Services Hospital, Lahore. Binary Logistic regression model was fitted using SPSS 20.0 Result: Sample comprised of 277 subjects and among these, 122 and 155 were cases and controls respectively. Female gender (OR=2.225), duration of diabetes (OR=1.066), blood glucose level in fasting (OR=1.006), and age (OR= 1.042) have a significant effect on the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy. Conclusion: The risk of Diabetic Neuropathy has been found higher, due to an increase in age, duration of diabetes and uncontrolled glucose level in the blood. Female patients of diabetes mellitus have higher probability of DN as compared to male patients.

Novel clinical associations between time in range and microangiopathies in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus on hemodialysis

Aims/hypothesisWe investigated associations among glucose time in range (TIR, 70–180 mg/dL), glycemic markers and prevalence of diabetic microangiopathy in people with diabetes undergoing hemodialysis (HD). MethodsA total of 107 people with type 2 diabetes undergoing HD (HbA1c 6.4 %; glycated albumin [GA] 20.6 %) using continuous glucose monitoring were analyzed in this observational and cross-sectional study. ResultsHbA1c and GA levels significantly negatively correlated with TIR, and positively correlated with time rate of hyperglycemia, but not with time rate of hypoglycemia. TIR of 70 % corresponded to HbA1c of 6.5 % and GA of 21.2 %. The estimated HbA1c level corresponding to TIR of 70 % in this study was lower than that previously reported in people with diabetes without HD. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy was not significantly different between people with TIR ≥ 70 % and those with TIR < 70 % (P = 0.1925), but the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in people with TIR ≥ 70 % was significantly lower than in those with TIR < 70 % (P = 0.0071). Conclusion/interpretationTIR correlated with HbA1c and GA levels in people with type 2 diabetes on HD. Additionally, a higher TIR resulted in a lower rate of diabetic retinopathy. Cross-Sectional Study of Assessment of Predominance of Prakrutiamong Patients with Diabetic Neuropathy in Wardha City

India is a developing country, so much of the Indian subcontinent are converting into urban areas, which lead to changes in lifestyle involving major tourist in battery plateau physical activities and increasing mental stress, which leads to insulin inertia. Approximately 246 million people worldwide have diabetes mellitus. It is estimated that 20 to 30 million people globally suffer from symptomatic diabetic neuropathy. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy also rises over time. If type 1 diabetes is not well controlled, severe diabetic polyneuropathy and poor glycemic control can appear in young adults just a few months after the disease manifests. Ayurveda can be correlated with MajjaDhatuDushti (Structural and functional defects of neurons). Identification of the predominance of a specific type of Prakrutiin patients with diabetic neuropathy in Wardha City. The prime objectives of the present study are to find out the predominance of specific Prakriti in patients with diabetic neuropathy in Wardhacity&amp;create awareness in them regarding complications of Diabetes mellitus, especially diabetic neuropathy and its relation with Prakruti. The current study was a cross-sectional study based on a personal interview of patients and Prakrutiquestionnaires. It occurred at Salod(H), Wardha, Maharashtra's Mahatma Gandhi Ayurved College, Hospital &amp; Research Center. It was found that the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy is high in PittajPradhanVataPrakruti. In this present study, most of the affected patients were male. The present study concludes that diabetic neuropathy was found more prevalently in patients with Pitta PradhanVataPrakruti. Evaluation of Risk Factors for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Among Saudi Type 2 Diabetic Patients with Longer Duration of Diabetes.

BackgroundNeuropathy is the most common microvascular complications among diabetic patients. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the predominant variety which may associate with increased in mortality and morbidity among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and its correlation with risk factors among T2DM.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional retrospective study, data was collected from a previous cohort study conducted at the University Diabetes Center, King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC), King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The data of T2DM patients were collected from case report form, included demographic data, history of chronic diabetes neuropathy, and laboratory reports. Statistical analysis includes Student`s t test, chi square test, and Pearson correlation and logistic regression were performed.ResultsA total of 430 patients with T2DM data was collected and analyzed, and of them 54% were females, with the mean age of 55.88 years. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy among study participants were 40.2%, and 73.3% of them having the subtype polyneuropathy. The mean BMI; p = 0.006, FBS; p < 0.001, HbA1c; p < 0.001, cholesterol p = 0.001, LDL; p < 0.001, and triglyceride; p < 0.001 levels were a significantly higher among participants with diabetic neuropathy than without neuropathy. The male gender (Risk Ratio: 1.294, 95% CI:1.090, 1.536) p = 0.003, fasting blood glucose (Risk Ratio: 1.157, 95% CI:1.051, 1.273) p = 0.003 Cholesterol (Risk Ratio: 1.588, 95% CI:1.174, 2.147) p = 0.003, triglyceride (Risk Ratio: 1.290, 95% CI:1.086, 1.538), p = 0.004, and LDL (Risk Ratio: 1.299, 95% CI:1.073, 1.574), p = 0.007) were found to be significant risk factors for DPN.ConclusionDPN is highly prevalent among T2DM patients in Saudi Arabia. Poor glycemic control and hyperlipidemia were associated with significantly higher risk for DPN patients among T2DM.

Clinical Characteristics of Patients With HNF1-alpha MODY: A Literature Review and Retrospective Chart Review.

The clinical manifestation of hepatocyte nuclear factor-1-alpha (HNF1-alpha) maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is highly variable. This study aims to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with HNF1-alpha MODY in general, by geographical regions (Asian or non-Asian), HNF1-alpha mutations, and islet autoantibody status. A literature review and a chart review of patients with HNF1-alpha MODY were performed. The means and proportions from studies were pooled using the inverse variance method for pooling, and subgroup analyses were performed. A total of 109 studies involving 1,325 patients [41.5%, 95% confidence interval (CI): 35.2, 48.1; male] were identified. The mean age of diagnosis was 20.3 years (95% CI: 18.3–22.2), and the mean glycated hemoglobin was 7.3% (95% CI: 7.2–7.5). In comparison, Asian patients exhibited significantly higher HbA1c (p = 0.007) and 2-h post-load C-peptide (p = 0.012) levels and lower levels of triglyceride (TG) (p < 0.001), total cholesterol (TC) (p < 0.001), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (p < 0.001) and less often had macrovascular complications (p = 0.014). The age of diagnosis was oldest in patients with mutations in the transactivation domain (p < 0.001). The levels of 2-h post-load C-peptide (p < 0.001), TG (p = 0.007), TC (p = 0.017), and HDL-c (p = 0.001) were highest and the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy was lowest (p = 0.024) in patients with DNA-binding domain mutations. The fasting (p = 0.004) and 2-h post-load glucose (p = 0.003) levels and the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy (p = 0.010) were higher among patients with positive islet autoantibodies. The study demonstrated that the clinical manifestations of HNF1-alpha MODY differed by geographical regions, HNF1-alpha mutations, and islet autoantibody status.

Effect of Synchronized Lifestyle Modification Program and Physiotherapy in Improving Type 2 Diabetic Neuropathy patients having Increased Body Mass Index

Background: Prevalence of diabetic neuropathy (DPN) is associated with increased Body Mass Index (BMI). Synchronized lifestyle modification program attempts to synchronize the circadian rhythm of the body through diet and exercise. Objective: Determine the role of Synchronized Lifestyle Modification Program (SLP) and Physiotherapy on fasting blood glucose (FBG), HbA1c, lipid profile, and degree of neuropathy in Type 2 DPN patients on Oral Hypoglycemic Agents (OHAs) having increased BMI. Materials and Methods: Randomized-controlled trial. Evaluation of 120 DPN patients on OHAs included, MNSI, BBS, FBG, HbA1c, Lipid profile and NCS. Participants divided into Group A and B, then divided into A1 and B1, that were overweight and A2 and B2, that were obese. B1 was divided into 1, 2 and 3 and B2 was divided into 4, 5 and 6. Groups 1 and 4 received SLP, Groups 2 and 5 received both SLP and Physiotherapy and Groups 3 and 6 received Physiotherapy for 12 weeks. p≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: MNSI, BBS, FBG, HbA1c, Total Cholesterol, TGs, HDL and LDL were significantly improved in Group 2. Conclusion: Combined Synchronized Lifestyle Modification Program and Physiotherapy is effective in DSPN patients that were overweight. Prevalence of Diabetic Neuropathy in Diabetic Type II Patients from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Introduction: Diabetic neuropathy is the main cause of neuropathy and major complications of diabetes mellitus throughout the world. This may lead to incapacity and amputations due to severe diabetes. The morbidity and mortality rates increase in diabetes due to severe neuropathy. The present study was aimed to determine the prevalence of diabetic diabetic neuropathy in diabetic mellitys type II affected patients. Materials and Methods: This research took place in Peshawar from September 2019 to January 2020. A total of 205 blood samples were collected from diabetic patients with type II diabetes, both neuropathic (n=105) and non-neuropathic (n=100). Blood samples were taken in order to estimate random blood sugar levels (RBS). Results: The age group 50-55 years had the highest percentage of cases (66.8%), followed by 56-60 years (21.5%), and 61-65 years (5.5%). Female patients were more likely than male patients to have diabetes, both neuropathic (62.9 percent) and non-neuropathic (58 percent). The predominance of neuropathic and non-neuropathic diabetes patients involved in this study because it was undertaken in Peshawar.(50.2 percent). Prevalence of different forms of neuropathies in type 2 diabetes patients attending a tertiary care hospital in Central Gujarat: A hospital based cross sectional study

Introduction: Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is commonest forms of complications observed in type 2 diabetes patients. Due to variations in clinical and electrophysiological diagnostic criteria for polyneuropathies, prevalence of diabetic neuropathy varies in different studies. We used only (Electro diagnostic) EDX criteria for diagnosis of neuropathies in present study. Aim and Objectives: To estimate prevalence of diabetic neuropathy; viz, mononeuropathy, polyneuropathy and mononeuropathy with coexistent polyneuropathy in population of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: It was a cross sectional study where total 53 diabetic subjects (30 male, 23 female) in age range 30-60 years were electrophysiologically evaluated for neuropathies during January 2013 to December 2015. Routine and specialized Nerve conduction studies were adopted for evaluation. Data was acquired and stored in Microsoft excel and analyzed using graph pad prism software. Results: Overall prevalence of diabetic neuropathy (DN) was 54.71%. Prevalence of other forms viz. Polyneuropathy only, mononeuropathy only and mononeuropathy with coexistent polyneuropathy are 30.18%, 16.98% and 7.54 % respectively. Median neuropathy at wrist was the only form of mononeuropathy observed in these cases. Severity of mononeuropathy was observed more in diabetes without polyneuropathy cases. Conclusion: Prevalence of different forms of neuropathies observed in present study is similar to previous studies. We observed more severe mononeuropathy in diabetes without polyneuropathy cases. Ефективність використання метилкобаламіну в комплексному лікуванні діабетичної периферичної нейропатії

Діабетична нейропатія — найбільш часте ускладнення ЦД, що трапляється в 30-90% пацієнтів. Актуальність дослідження зумовлено поширеністю діабетичної нейропатії, а також оцінкою ефективності використання метильованої форми вітаміну В12 у лікуванні пацієнтів із ЦД. Метою даного дослідження було визначення ефективності метилкобаламіну (препарат Діакобал, «Кусум Фарм») у комплексному лікуванні пацієнтів із ЦД,ускладненим діабетичною периферичною нейропатією (ДПН). Матеріал і методи. Дослідження проведено простим відкритим методом. Для скринінгу та визначення вираженості симптомів ДПН використовували Мічиганський опитувальник для скринінгу нейропатії (The Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument, MNSI), шкалу неврологічних симптомів (Neurological Symptoms Score, NSS), Європейський опитувальник оцінки якості життя (European Quality of Life Questionnaire, EQ‑5D). Неврологічне обстеження пацієнтів включало оцінку різних видів чутливості (больової, тактильної, вібраційної, холодової, теплової, пропріоцептивної, відчуття тиску). Усім пацієнтам визначали рівень у крові вітаміну В12 (ціанокобаламіну). Пацієнтам із ДПН, незалежно від показників вмісту вітаміну В12, до схеми традиційного лікування ДПН додавали Діакобал.

Relationship between diabetic neuropathy and sarcopenia

ObjectiveThe present study was designed to examine the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients who have Diabetic Neuropathy (DN); and to determine the relation between DN and sarcopenia. Material and methodsA total of 602 diabetic patients (mean age 60.2 ± 10.6 years; 40.5% male) were included in the study, which was designed as a cross-sectional study. The body composition was measured with the bioimpedance analysis method, and the muscle strength was measured by evaluating the hand grip strength. Those who showed only reduced handgrip strength were categorized in the s-presarcopenia group, whereas patients with only muscle volume loss were categorized in the v-presarcopenia group, those who had them together were defined as sarcopenia; and sarcopenia that was accompanied by obesity was defined as sarcopenic obesity. DN consisted of Diabetic Sensorimotor Polyneuropathy (DSPN) and Diabetic Autonomic Neuropathies (DAN) as two large groups. DAN consisted of its sub-groups of Cardiovascular Autonomic Neuropathy (CV-AN), Gastrointestinal Autonomic Neuropathy (GI-AN), Genitourinary Autonomic Neuropathy (GU-AN), Sudomotor Autonomic Neuropathy (SM-AN), which were identified with their own methods. Logistic regression analyzes were carried out to determine the relations of DN and its subgroups with sarcopenia and its components. ResultsThe DN prevalence was determined to be 85% in the entire patient population; and it was 80.2% in those who had normal muscle mass and strength, 84.4% in s-presarcopenic patients, 82.1% in v-presarcopenic patients, and 94.1% in sarcopenic patients. On the other hand, DN prevalence was 89.2% in non-obese sarcopenics; however, it was determined as 95,9% in sarcopenic obese patients. Similarly, the DN prevalence of non-sarcopenic patients was determined to be 76.7% in non-obese patients; and 88.5% in those who were obese. The sarcopenia incidence in patients who had DN was higher at a significant level than in those without DN (24.7%–8.9%). In the multivariate logistic regression analyzes, DN was determined to be associated with sarcopenia, independently from age and gender, even from accompanying concomitant diseases, BMI, Ha1c and GFR levels (OR: 2.38, 95% CI: 1.02–5.54). ConclusionsThe present study revealed the relation of sarcopenia with DN, especially with GI-AN and GU-AN.

Prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in Ahmednagar City using michigan neuropathy screening instrument

Background: Diabetes is fast gaining the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the disease. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes that can cause significant morbidity and mortality. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of Diabetic Neuropathy in Urban population of Ahmednagar City. Material and Method: Study Design is a cross-sectional study in Ahmednagar City. Study Period is from October 2017 to March 2018. Convenient sampling was done. The patients were given a questionnaire which was to be self-administered followed by clinical examination done by the therapist. Results: The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy among diabetics was found to be 6.25% for pure neuropathy and is 42.70% for patients with only significant clinical examination. Higher prevalence was found in patients with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, chronic diabetic patients as well as obese subjects.

Atherogenic Index in Type 2 Diabetes and Its Relationship with Chronic Microvascular Complications.

Objective This study was designed to investigate risk factors related to atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), as well as the relationship between AIP and chronic microvascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods This study included 2523 patients with T2DM who had not been treated with lipid-lowering drugs and were admitted to the Department of Endocrinology at Zhongnan Hospital, Wuhan University, during the period from January 2015 to February 2018. Anthropometric indicators were measured after overnight fasting. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) were detected by enzymatic analysis. Standard 75 g oral glucose tolerance testing was performed to measure 0 and 2 hr plasma levels of glucose and insulin. Insulin sensitivity was assessed with HOMA-IR. Results Increase in AIP was associated with an increased risk for hypertension (P < 0.05), HbA1c (P < 0.05), HOMA-IR (P < 0.05), UA (P < 0.05), and decreased eGFR levels (P < 0.05). Furthermore, AIP values directly correlated with BMI (r = 0.182, P < 0.001), waist circumference (r = 0.129, P < 0.001), blood glucose index (FBG (r = 0.153, P < 0.001), PPBG (r = 0.117, P < 0.001), and HbA1c (r = 0.074, P < 0.001)), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR; r = 0.112, P < 0.001), and uric acid (UA, r = 0.177, P < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that waist circumference, HOMA-IR, FBG, systolic blood pressure, and UA were independent risk factors for AIP (all P < 0.05). The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy and metabolic syndrome was significantly higher among patients with higher AIP. Conclusion AIP represents a clinically convenient indicator for the detection of T2DM with high risk of complications and associated diseases and thus is a good predictor and indicator for follow-up monitoring in the treatment of patients with high-risk type 2 diabetes.

Prevalence of Diabetic Neuropathy in Young Adults with Type 1 Diabetes and the Association with Insulin Pump Therapy.

The aim was to investigate the prevalence of diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN) and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in a Danish population of young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using both established and novel measuring modalities. Furthermore, to investigate the association between continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) treatment and these complications. CAN was assessed by cardiovascular autonomic reflex tests. DSPN was assessed not only by perception of light touch and pain, vibration perception threshold (VPT), Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), and Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument questionnaires but also by novel modalities: electrochemical skin conductance (ESC), sural nerve conduction velocity (SNCV), and sural nerve amplitude potential (SNAP). The study comprised 156 young adults with a mean age of 22 years (standard deviation 1.6). The prevalence of CAN and early CAN was 9% and 28.1%, respectively. Subclinical DSPN was 55.1% and confirmed DSPN was 2.6%. Prevalence of abnormal SNAP was 23.8%, SNCV was 37.1%, ESC on the hands and feet was 4% and 8%, respectively, VPT was 1.3%, and BPI questionnaire was 1.9%. No association was found between CSII treatment and the measures of DSPN and CAN. DSPN and CAN are prevalent in young adults with T1D with no association found with CSII treatment. The use of novel measuring modalities identified a higher number of subjects with DSPN compared with established measures. Screening for diabetic neuropathy in young adults may be beneficial to detect and prevent nerve damages at early stages.

Knowledge, adherence to the treatment and prevalence of neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Objective: Identify the level of knowledge, adherence and prevalence of diabetic neuropathy (NPD), determine the relationship between knowledge, adherence to treatment, time to suffer from the disease and the NPD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who attend to control in four units of the health sector in Tampico and Cd. Madero Tamaulipas. To describe the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus that attend control in four units of the health sector in Tampico and Cd. Madero Tamaulipas.Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional correlational study performed on a sample of 554 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who attended to control their disease in four health sector units in Tampico and Cd. Madero, Tamaulipas, the type of sampling was non-probabilistic for convenienceResults: 554 patients were surveyed, the mean age was 55 years, the mean time of diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus was 10 years, 61.9% were women, 62.8% were married, 34.5% were primary and 89.5% were belonged to the lower class. The level of knowledge was insufficient in 74% of the patients, the reported adherence was 75% in the middle level and the NPD prevalence in the period was 5.5, the relationship between knowledge and adherence and time of diagnosis was statistically verified prevalence of NPD.Conclusions: The results demonstrate the importance of education to patients since the knowledge of their disease contributes to the patient accepting and adhering to the treatment.

Diabetic Neuropathy Prevalence and Its Associated Risk Factors in Two Representative Groups of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients from Bihor County.

Diabetic neuropathy has an important impact on the quality of life of affected individuals due to the presence of chronic symptoms like distal neuropathic pain, but it also influences the survival of diabetic patients, given that the clinical forms of diabetic neuropathy produce complications such as diabetic foot syndrome in distal peripheral neuropathy or life threatening arrhythmias in autonomic cardiac neuropathy. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in representative cohorts is very discordant in numerous studies, and our purpose was to evaluate the frequency of this microvascular complication in Bihor County and to determine some risk factors for its development in order to perform a more rigorous screening in certain risk groups. We formed two representative cohorts for type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus population in our county and applied a questionnaire with three subsets of questions for sensitive, motor and autonomic symptoms. Every patient was evaluated by using semi quantitative tests for distal neuropathy and two tests for determination of cardiac autonomic neuropathy. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy was 28.70% in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and 50.70% in those with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Distal neuropathy was the most frequent clinical form, autonomic neuropathy having a low prevalence. The same risk factors were associated (p<0.01) with an increased risk of diabetic neuropathy in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: age, diabetes duration, HbA1 c, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and other microvascular complications. Screening for distal symmetric polyneuropathy can be easily done by using a symptom questionnaire and semi quantitative tests, and it is important to consider the fact that over 50% of type 2 diabetes patients in the representative cohort were affected by the complication. Control of modifiable risk factors can reduce the risk of neuropathy development considering the lower frequency of neuropathy in the groups with good glycaemic control, normal blood pressure and absence of dyslipidaemia.

Contemporary Prevalence of Diabetic Neuropathy in Type 1 Diabetes (T1D)—Findings from the T1D Exchange

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a major cause of disability, mortality and poor quality of life in patients with T1D, with prior reported prevalence rates of up to 35%. The contemporary prevalence of DPN in T1D patients was evaluated in T1D Exchange Registry centers throughout the United States. The Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), a validated 15-item self-administered questionnaire, was used to assess DPN in adults ≥18 years with ≥ 5 years of T1D duration. A score of ≥4 was used to define DPN. Diabetes-related characteristics and laboratory data were obtained through the most recent clinic update. Chi-square and t-tests were used to compare demographic and diabetes-related characteristics between those with and without DPN. Linear regression was used to determine the effect of DPN on HbA1c, adjusted for possible confounders. In preliminary analyses of 5,058 participants across 62 sites (mean age 39±18 years, T1D duration 22±14 years, 56% female, 88% non-hispanic white, mean HbA1c 8.1±1.6%), the prevalence of DPN was 10%. Those with DPN were older (52±17 vs. 37±18 years), more likely to be female (61% vs. 55%), had longer T1D duration (32±16 vs. 21±13 years), lower annual household income (37% vs. 59% earning ≥$75K), and lower education level (55% vs. 69% with college degree) than those without DPN (all p&amp;lt;0.001). They also had higher systolic blood pressure (126±17 vs. 123±14 mmHg), triglycerides (117±89 vs. 95±62 mg/dL), tobacco use (9% vs. 4%) and prevalence of established CVD (26% vs. 6%), despite higher use of CVD-modifying agents such as statins (64% vs. 31%) and ACE-inhibitors/ARBs (45% vs. 23%) (all p&amp;lt;0.001). Participants with DPN had higher HbA1c (8.4±1.7% vs. 8.1±1.6%), even after adjusting for multiple confounders (p &amp;lt;0.01). The prevalence of DPN in this national T1D cohort is lower than prior published reports, reflecting current clinical care practices, and highlighting other non-glycemic risk factors for DPN including CVD risk factors and socioeconomic status. Prevalencia de neuropatía diabética en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en una clínica regional del Estado de México

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Objetivo:&lt;/strong&gt; determinar la prevalencia de neuropatía diabética en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (dm2) de una clínica de consulta externa. &lt;strong&gt;Métodos:&lt;/strong&gt; estudio descriptivo y observacional, en una muestra de 106 pacientes con dm2 de la clínica regional Santiago Tianguistenco (crst), Estado de México, se les aplicó el &lt;em&gt;Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument&lt;/em&gt;, que consta de una autoevaluación sobre la presencia de síntomas neuropáticos y de examen físico en ambos pies que incluye inspección del pie, sensibilidad a la vibración, reflejo del tobillo y monofilamento. &lt;strong&gt;Resultados:&lt;/strong&gt; se detectó neuropatía diabética en 81.1%, los factores asociados fueron: género masculino 59.4%; edad de 51 a 60 años 39.6%; nivel de escolaridad bajo en 35.8%; casados 88.7%; de 5 a 10 años de evolución de la diabetes en 52.7%; sobrepeso en 52.8%; descontrol glucémico en 69.8%; anormalidad en el aspecto de los pies en 82.1%, disminución de sensibilidad en 76.4%; y disminución de percepción de vibración en 20.9%. &lt;strong&gt;Conclusiones:&lt;/strong&gt; la prevalencia de neuropatía diabética periférica es mayor a 80%, fue más frecuente en hombres de 51 a 60 años, las principales lesiones identificadas fueron, anormalidad en el aspecto de los pies y disminución de sensibilidad. Ante tal problema de salud es necesario establecer acciones preventivas encaminadas a evitar el deterioro en la calidad de vida del paciente y su familia.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
