The condensation equilibrium in the system polycaproamide (PCA)-water-amine has been investigated at 235, 255 and 270° with H 2O concentrations ranging from 0·2 to 1·5 wt.%, and amine concentrations in the range from 0·5 to 2 mole %. It is shown that a linear relationship exists between logarithms of the equilibrium constants for the reactions of hydrolysis and aminolysis of the amide endgroup formed by the COOH group of the PCA macromolecule and the different amines, and the p K a values of the amines in water. A method is proposed whereby the degree of polycondensation P of the equilibrium PCA obtained in the presence of different amines and water may be found. A strict correlation has been found between P of the polycondensation polymers and the amount of the monofunctional additive being introduced.
