Esterification of carboxylic acids with olefins using cation exchange resins as catalysts

Esterification of acetic acid with α olefins and isobutylene was carried out in the presence of cation exchange resins used as catalysts in the temperature range of 10 to 100°C depending on the nature of the olefin used. Amberlyst 15 showed the highest catalytic efficiency. An attempt was made to separate isobutylene from isomeric butenes by selective esterification with acetic acid. There are distinct advantages in making isopropyl chloroacetate from propylene and chloroacetic acid; unconverted chloroacetic acid can be recycled using a new strategy. The transesterification of 2-dodecyl acetate with alcohols such as methanol and n-butanol to give the corresponding ester and secondary alcohol was carried out in the presence of Amberlyst 15 as the catalyst. n-Butanol was found to be a suitable alcohol for this reaction.

Hydroxymethylation of furan and its derivatives in the presence of cation-exchange resins

Reactions of furan, sylvan, and furfuryl alcohol with aqueous formaldehyde in two- and three-phase systems in the presence of various cation-exchange resins in their H +-form or soluble (organic or inorganic) acids have been studied. Both acidity and lipophilicity of the catalysts were found to play roles in hydroxymethylation. By using the strongly acidic cation-exchanger Amberlyst ® 15 as catalyst, the following compounds have been prepared: furfuryl alcohol from furan and formaldehyde (yield: 70%), 2,2'-difurylmethane from furfuryl alcohol and furan (yield: 60%), bis(5-methyl-2-furyl)methane from sylvan and formaldehyde (yield: 90%). In the presence of a weakly acidic cation-exchanger (Amberlite IRC-50), 5-methyl-furfuryl alcohol and 2,5-di(hydroxymethyl) furan have been synthesized by reaction of formaldehyde with sylvan and furfuryl alcohol, respectively.

Crystalline Methyl β-L-Pfamnofuranqside From Fischer Glycqsidatiok of L-Rhamnose

Abstract Flash chromatography of the mixture obtained by reaction of L-rhamnose with methanol in the presence of cation-exchange resin, in addition to methyl α-L-rhamnofuranoside (3) and methyl rhamnopyranosides 1 and 2 gave methyl β-L-rhamnofuranoside (4) in 8% yield. 13C and 1H NMR spectra of 3 and 4 as well as their calculated conformation in solution are discussed.

Effect of the hydration rate of cation-exchange resins on their catalytic activity in the condensation reaction of formaldehyde with aromatic ketones

The condensation reaction of aromatic ketones with formaldehyde was carried out in organic media in the presence of cation-exchange resins used as catalysts. The corresponding 1,3-dioxacyclohexane could be obtained in good yield as the reaction selectivity was satisfactory. The investigation of the main parameters of the reaction (structure of the reactants, nature of the catalyst and of the solvent, hydration rate of the medium) showed the prevailing role of the residual water occurring in the organic reaction medium. The Karl Fischer titrimetric method allowed the value of this parameter, which governs the catalytic activity of ion-exchange resins, to be controlled satisfactorily.

Pyridinecarboxylic acids undergo esterification on refluxing with alcohols in the presence of cation-exchange resins. In the case of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, in which the basicity of the nitrogen atom is reduced, esterification products are obtained in high yields. In the case of pyridinecarboxylic acids, in which the pyridine nitrogen atom displays considerable basicity, the cations of the acids are tied up by the cation-exchange resin, and the yields of preparatively isolable esters do not exceed 60%.

Versatile spectrophotometric method for the determination of silicon

A versatile spectrophotometric method is described for the determination of microgram levels of silicon, as molybdenum blue. It combines the desirable features of existing spectrophotometric methods with three pretreatment procedures, namely ( a) the removal of cations with a cation-exchange resin in the H +-form, ( b) the conversion of all silicon species into the reactive monomer with an alkaline treatment, and (c) the decomposition of silicon fluoride with boric acid in the presence of cation-exchange resin. These pretreatments coupled with the colour development provide five procedures which are applicable to a wide variety of samples including natural and industrial waters and solutions of various nuclear reactor fuels and components. Provisions are included for the selective determination of total silicon.

HYDROLYSIS OF SOME ANTIBIOTICS AND OF THEIR DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS IN THE PRESENCE OF CATION EXCHANGE RESINS.

THE conditions under which some antibiotics are hydrolysed may be important for the isolation and identification of the products of their decomposition since these are used in investigations of the structure of the antibiotics. During hydrolysis with mineral acids some moieties, such as carbohydrates, may be destroyed, and much humin may be produced which makes it difficult to isolate the more stable products of decomposition in pure form.
