I read the comments of Dr Singer with great interest. Because of disunity of the patient's care among several institutions, no clotting studies were obtained. I cannot say, however, that the persistent bleeding was not related to puncture of the uterus with the sound in the presence of anticoagulants. Although surgery is performed frequently on patients receiving anticoagulant agents, bleeding points are ligated or electrocoagulated. In this instance, a uterine puncture that would have stopped bleeding spontaneously, as evidenced by common experience with punctures during routine curettages, did not stop bleeding for 72 hours, and the only outstanding factor was the administration of anticoagulant medication. Therefore, I believe that anticoagulation constitutes a relative contraindication for intrauterine-device insertion.

Effects of adrenochrome semicarbazone on blood loss in the mouse

A method for determining the blood loss and bleeding time of a standardized wound is described, and it is applied in examining the activities of a clinically-used hemostatic agent—adrenochrome semicarbazone. It is shown that adrenochrome semicarbazone has an effect in decreasing blood loss at doses as low as 0.1 mg./Kg., and is effective in the presence of anticoagulants. A mechanism of action is suggested.

SUMMARYThe Author describes two case of Fanconi's syndrome in a 5-year-old boy and in an 11-year-old girl respectively. A diagnosis was made in both of erythroleucothrombocytofenia and medullary aplasia, cutaneous, hyperpigmentation, some shortened and bent fingers, symptoms of haemorragic diathesis and of alterations in body development with radiological signs of intracranic hypertension, high levels of plasmatic proteins with increased globulins. In the boy scleroedema was also found. The tests for haemorragic diathesis hinted in this case, at the presence of anticoagulants in the blood.The statistical study of all the cases published in the literature and an appraisel of the results by the methods of Lenz and Hogben induces the admission that Fanconi's syndrome is a hereditary disease transmitted by a recessive character with multiple effects irregularly expressed.
