The territory of present day Slovenia was during the Carolingian era -especially if we have in mind the presence of books, languages, writing styles and religious experiences -confronted with three streams. There is the important impact of St.Methodius: with a new alphabet, Glagolitic one, and with texts in vernacular language it became an opposition against the Latin tradition, due to the favorable attitude of Pannonian duke Kocelj, and consequently in some localities Latin language and lettering at least temporarily lost their positions. On the other hand, there are different witnesses of Irish missionary activities. Of special Importance are monuments, dating cca. 1000 (esp. the so-called Monumenta Frisingenia and Letania norica. Next to these there are testimonies of intense impact and pressure from the Salzburg archbishopric on the territory of Carniola and Carantania.
