Professional Practices Boards for Teachers

Shive describes and analyzes the cur rent status of professional practices boards for teaching. The questions of assessment for entry into the profes sion, interdependence of certification and teacher preparation programs, and national versus state professional prac tices boards are examined. Implications of such boards forthe state of the profes sion including improving minority rep resentation in teaching, establishing high standards for practice, and improv ing public confidence in teachers are also considered.

Standardized physician preparation of death certificates

One method for determining cause of death in a clinical trial is to use standard nosological coding of death certificates. In order to look at an alternative approach, the Hypertension Detection and Follow-up Program (HDFP) assessed underlying causes of death through the use of three physicians. These physicians were trained and standardized in the proper recording of cause of death on death certificates. Each physician completed a death certificate for each of the 768 deaths in the HDFP, utilizing all available information, including HDFP records, plus any additional hospital and autopsy records. The new standardized death certificates were then transmitted to a panel of three nosologists who coded the cause of death. The physician preparation procedure was compared with a procedure wherein a panel of three nosologist coded the original death certificate for the underlying cause of death. The procedures agreed on the three-digit International Classification of Disease, Adapted code in 60.1% of the cases. The agreement rate improved to 72.5% when disease codes were collapsed into broad disease categories utilized in the HDFP.

Certification: Philosophy, goals, and methods, with application to the discipline of infection control practice

The philosophy, goals, and methods of certification are complex and need to be understood in general before they can be applied to a specific practice discipline. This article is intended to provide background information about certification, summarize the history of credentialing for health occupations, and briefly describe methods for test design and construction. Philosophy, goals, methods, and preparation for certification are then applied to the discipline of infection control practice, with specific reference to the Infection Control Certification Examination, offered for the first time in November 1983 and in each subsequent year.

National Trends for Certification and Training of Special Education Teachers

Historically the United States has lacked consensus regarding teacher certification and teacher training in special education. A labyrinth of titles, labels, and guidelines causes confusion. A national study to determine individual state policy regarding current special education teacher certification and personnel preparation is described. Recommendations for the direction of future change were also solicited from the questionnaire respondents. Suggestions of the researchers concerning the leadership role to be assumed by individual states are outlined.

The paper examines the responsibilities of the veterinary surgeon in relation to the advances more recently made in the field of equine cardiology. Notwithstanding such advances it is stated that the normal established legal principles apply, in particular in relation to the preparation of certificates, namely that the veterinary surgeon must be sufficiently expert to give the opinion sought, that he must make himself fully aware of the purpose for which the certificate is required and that he must make clear the nature and limitations of any examination carried out.

Training of military enlisted paramedical personnel for greater use in civilian and military practice of surgery

The need for continually improving training programs and training facilities for surgeons is well recognized. However, the increasing need for paramedical personnel with capabilities in surgical fields has become apparent, and training programs for them are now of increasing importance. This paper discusses the new programs for training enlisted paramedical personnel while in military service. These programs will allow for better and more sophisticated usage of their talents not only during their period of enlistment, but also after their return to civilian life. Numbers of surgical specialty technicians and physician's assistants under current training, curricula, college credit programs, and preparation for state registration and certification are discussed.
